Alex Van Halen Poses for Living Room Portrait by L.A. Artist

by VHND — updated February 20, 2026 Leave a Comment

Los Angeles artist Robert Vargas recently shared a special behind-the-scenes moment with Alex Van Halen — and Van Halen fans are getting a glimpse inside.

(Note that Robert Vargas is the artist who painted the epic Eddie Van Halen mural in Hollywood a few years ago. Yes, that guy!)

In a video posted to social media, Vargas is seen sitting on the floor of Alex’s living room, carefully sketching the legendary drummer as he relaxes on his couch. When the drawing was complete, Vargas turned the portrait around for Alex to see — and then presented it to him as a gift.

Vargas captioned the post:

“Powerful moments yesterday, drawing my creative brother, legendary @vanhalen drummer, #AlexVanHalen @alexvanhalenofficial. We always have the best times sharing stories and laughing. Time flies whenever we are together. Much love, Al and @vhfarmsllc. More to come from us!”

Watch Vargas’s video, embedded below. It offers a rare glimpse of Alex in a relaxed, personal setting.

Alex was visibly blown away, responding with “Yeah!” and then laughter and a fist bump. “I appreciate you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’m speechless. I love it. It’s great, man. It’s… I can’t… it’s beautiful. That’s my mom’s lips.”

We’ll keep you posted on what Vargas meant by “more to come.”

And check out his huge 2021 mural of Edward Van Halen. That’s always worth another look.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of 5150, the first album featuring the lineup of Sammy Hagar, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and Michael Anthony, the band will release 5150 (Expanded Edition) on March 27. The LP/3CD/Blu-ray Set includes the remastered album, rarities, previously unreleased 1986 live recordings, and a Blu-ray featuring a new high-definition version of the double-platinum concert video, Live Without A Net, plus promo videos for “Dreams” and “Why Can’t This Be Love.”

Standalone versions of 5150 featuring the remastered album and rarities will also be available as a 2CD and 2LP.
