Sammy Hagar & The Circle’s “Crazy Times!” tour is about to get underway, and Michael Anthony says Van Halen fans will be pleasantly surprised by a few of the songs on the setlist.
During his recent appearance on Sirius XM’s “Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk” (June 2nd), Anthony said he will not only continue to sing lead on a few classic Van Halen songs during the band’s set, but he’s also planning on digging deep into the band’s early catalog.
“When we hit the road this month there’s gonna be a couple more surprises,” said Anthony. “I’m gonna be singing some other VH stuff. Early stuff. I’m digging back into the catalog. Sammy’s giving me a little spotlight on the lead vocal, so I figured – why not?”
During their February residency in Las Vegas, Anthony sang lead on “Runnin’ With The Devil” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”. This time around, however, he’s looking to go beyond the radio hits. Which Van Halen classics he’ll be playing? Anthony wasn’t about to spoil the surprise.
“I won’t mention any songs but we’re digging back on a few…I’ve been talking with [drummer] Jason (Bonham) and [guitarist] Vic (Johnson) and while we’re out on this summer run – we’re taking out George Thorogood – we’re gonna hit a couple of other old classics, maybe dig back a little bit more like, deep cut stuff and not just you’re ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love’ and stuff that we would normally do.”
Below is Anthony’s entire interview with his comments on the upcoming summer tour at the 27:35 mark:
