Stryper’s Michael Sweet posted a great tribute to Van Halen’s singer and frontman on his Facebook page. Here it is, for your convenience and reading pleasure:
If you don’t know already I’m one of the biggest Van Halen fans on the planet. When I heard VH I for the first time not only did it change my life as a guitarist, it changed my life as a frontman/performer too. David Lee Roth is without question one of the best frontmen (if not the best) of all time!
I was just viewing some recent VH videos on YouTube and it really stirred my blood to read some of the negative comments about DLR’s voice.
First, the man is 62 years old and he’s still singing and performing. He changes up the melody quite a bit live but this is something that he’s always done, just a little more so in recent times. He still has the pipes that he always had and obviously the personality is still 100% in play. He’s in great shape and it’s apparent that he works hard to be fit and to put on a great show/performance.
What makes me roll the eyes are the people who make the comments. People who have never done what VH/DLR have done nor will they ever. VH changed the music world and is the greatest American rock band of all time (IMO) and no band will ever come close to what VH has achieved (EVH, AVH, DLR & MA). No guitarist will ever accomplish what EVH has accomplished and no singer/frontman will ever have the style and personality that DLR had and has. He helped make VH who they are today and he’s such an important part of Van Halen’s impact on rock & roll.
This is nothing more than a post to say “Thank you DLR” for inspiring this dude and for helping to make me who I am today as an artist and a musician?
