Last week, the Oprah Network gave VHND an exclusive video of Sammy Hagar’s quote about Van Halen from his new interview with Oprah: Where Are They Now?
Today we’re featuring the complete 10 minute Sammy Hagar segment from Oprah: Where Are They Now?, which aired last Saturday, August 20th, 2016. The video is embedded above.
As the frontman for rock bands Montrose and the iconic Van Halen, Sammy Hagar knew how to put on a show. But he tells Oprah: Where Are They Now? that his larger-than-life stage presence was really just a way to cover up his nerves.
Growing up, the singer says he didn’t listen to hard rock. “I started out as a young kid listening to soul music,” Sammy says. “I loved country, folk, bluegrass.”
Somewhere along the line, Sammy says, things changed. He found himself performing in huge stadiums all over the world in the hard rock band Montrose and later, Van Halen.
“Because of my insecurity and my nervousness, [when I would] get on stage, I couldn’t just stand there,” Sammy says. “I’m running all over the place. I’m like, ‘Oh, what do I do with myself?’ Oh God, I’ll jump off this. Oh hey, I’ll jump up in the air and I’ll smash the guitar. All that came—my whole performer side of me—came from being nervous and scared.”
