Up Next, Come closer, bigfoot, dubai blues. is enough to buy the cd…. lighten up and last temptation are worth a listen..

Thought it would be harder… Maybe not getting an earful with 90 sec clips

  • EEASCURLY

Cool, talented bunch of guys…..I like it butI start getting bored. I still like Sammy solo better pre-VH,pre Waboritos, pre foot – just my 2 cents. He can still bring it though for an old weathered rock star – just can’t get into this.

  • Colf

Not digging this at all. A few tunes are decent but this is sub par work from Hagar. I love Sammy and Mike and want to love Chickenfoot but I just don’t. First album was ok, this is less than. This album just feels “off”. Bigfoot is the strongest song on ths disc, at least that’s what I get from the samples. Hopefully the full songs work better than the clips or the songs are growers….or better yet new VH hits and we all say Chicken-who?

  • Herb

Isn’t Kenny Aronoff one of the members of the HSAS effort? Anyone know the definitive answer?

I have to say I get a good chuckle out of the obligatory “Sam’s best music is behind him” garbage. While I think it’s certainly a debatable subject, really more than anything I think it’s just so stupid to say. I mean really…who at 64 fucking years old has their best music in front of them.

  • Wolfgang5150

Not good- Big foot is the only rocker. Van Halen please hurry up and save us Have Black Label open for you-

  • FAMAC

Come Closer would have been better with DLR on vocals – much more his style of loungy tune.

This stuff is really weak for the most part. The songwriting just isn’t there. Lots of tunes trying to be too poppy. It sounds like barely any effort was made to advance the material beyond the demo stage – and many weren’t even good demos.

For a guy who is supposed to be a great guitarist, Joe sure can’t write any interesting riffs – and the stuff he come up with isn’t even spruced up with some interesting flourishes.

One of the great things about Eddie is his rythym playing is as good as his leads, at least on the classic stuff. He knows how to add little variations that keep the tune fresh – even just different approaches to playing straight chords.

Joe is cluesless on this front as far as I can tell. I think he spends all of his time soloing, while Eddie had no know how to play rythym from years of cover clubbing.

  • Jeff

I’m proud of the guys at Chickenfoot. They continue to give us rock, when the rest of the music business is sucking wind.

    With that said…..

Sammy really needs to consider toning down the anti-Van Halen rhetoric. Ed and Al aren’t doing anything to them, yet Sammy is continuing to trash the band. Man, drop it already! As much as I love Sammy, he’s really starting to come off as a complete ass and an attention whore.

    Shut up and play, Sammy!

  • Drew

The clips sound awesome. Very excited for this album now! Was let down by Big Foot.. But as Hagar said, that’s really the only commercial sounding song from what I heard..

  • Beez5150

Mikey said that this would be harder than the first effort. Where is it?! Other than Last Temptation, 3 1/2 letters, and Big Foot, it sounds more mellow. Nothing here jumps out for me, unlike Soap on a Rope and Down the Drain.

Hopefully the 90 second clips aren’t doing it justice!

  • TooWalrus

You know what’s great? That new Red Hot Chili Peppers album. I’ve listened to the whole thing like 3 times now and it kicks ass all the way through.

  • tom

i don’t know what people expect from this band, to be like van halen? it’s impossible. hopefully we’ll get best of both worlds here..i like what i hear, sounds fresh and rockin’.

  • fielderdreams

sam does like to talk some rubbish sometimes, but he could be right saying this is the best record he has ever been a part of…. the songs have a darker tone to them, vocally he sounds more whiskey mouthed gravelly (which is a good thing), mike shines through of course and the band sound ultra tight. i am excited to hear the full versions. great stuff!

  • Carnal Knowledge

Come Closer is the perfect range for Sammy. He never sings down there, but it’s awesome. Great groove too.

    Up next is nice.
    Dubai Blues nice
    Different Devil, nice

Sounds like Sammy put a bit more time into this one…

  • modernrelic

Big Foot is the “Soap On A Rope” on this CD. I’m just amazed and blown away how great Sammy is vocally….maybe he was kidnapped by aliens and they put a chip in his throat to make him sing rock n roll till he’s 90 years old….LOL Michael Anthony sounds awesome…and Satch…oh man… Satch has some good groves up his sleeve and of course Will Ferril is great as always….Chad’s humor reminds me of the late Keith Moon. The first Chickenfoot Album is still my favorite just like the first Van Halen. I like all the others, but VH1 is my favorite…same goes for Chickenfoot.

    Rock On FOOT!!

  • Jake’s Bitch

WOW … I absolutely love “Come Closer”. I got lost in the moment listening to that clip. I cannot wait to listen to the new CD. :-) Thanks CF !!!

  • HALEN GOER

New BIGFOOT video up! Hearing the entire song and watching the video…I’m LOVING the vibe of this song…well done!!

  • Eddie Van Wailin’

Kenny A should be a solid fill in for Chad. One of the better “hired guns” out there, he’s played with everybody. Seen him live a couple times and he always brings it. Very animated on stage and some solid chops as well.

Interested to hear this album in it’s entirety before making a judgement one way or another. I agree that Mike’s backing vocals really make the songs.

I liked the first album and thought it had some great moments (Soap on a Rope, Future in the Past in particular), but didn’t love it on the whole. I still think it’s Satch’s playing in a band situation that just doesn’t quite do it for me. Something about his riffs, songwriting and and just the overall chemistry seem very bland to and mechanical to me. But then again when EVH is your basis of comparison, I guess it’s not a knock to fall short on that front.

  • http://www.markwilliamjewelry.com Mark the Jeweler

I want to like it but it seems just rather bland. Sam’s voice to me is past it’s prime. Still cool but not electric like it was up until Balance.

The song writing is what seems to me to be lacking the most. Not catchy enough, I’d like to see music get back to shorter songs that have great choruses and memorable melodies like back in CVH era.

Never understood why bands in general can’t seem to tap back into that hit making machine status.

  • PJH

I love Joe’s work on this CD. He is awesome. I was hoping for Sam to change things up a bit and he did. He went back a bit to his earlier solo style on the commercial-ready songs. I was getting a little tired of his “oh Yeah” screaming on every single song. He still has a great voice, but I guess I am getting a little tired of it. The album certainly doesn’t seem heavier, but perhaps better in some ways and stale in others. Nice to see Mikey get showcased a little on Dubai. I give the Foot lots of credit for working hard on this CD. THese days for artists like them, there is hardly any money made from doing it, so kudos to them for bringing their art to the fans.

  • dude

Tunes sound OK to me. I’m just kind of tired of Sam’s voice and all – always sounds a bit snarky or something … just my opinion! Over the years I have certainly enjoyed the Sam era VH stuff, though. DLR still rules the roost for me, though.

  • Garrett

Last Temptation, Different Devil and Come Closer sound like solid tracks to me! Looking forward to hearing the whole thing.

Nice work CF,… from a CVH fan.

  • Time To Rock

Straight forward rock and roll. Everyone sounds amazing on this. Can’t wait!!

  • http://www.theluxurykings.com Jungleland2

Kenny Aronoff is one of the best drummers out there. He has not done much hard rock but tons of classic rock. John Fogerty, BoDeans, John Mellencamp (all of them), Indigo Girls, Bon Jovi (Blaze Of Glory). He will be a great fit.

  • Steve

    ugh

  • Robert

Last Temptation, Lighten Up, Dubai Blues, Something Gone Wrong…holy heck fire people. This albumn is way different and way better than their first great albumn. As a life-long VH fan, I can tell you right now that the brothers will not produce anything at this stage in their career that will touch this.

  • Adam

This stuff sounds pretty interesting to me! Let’s just not jump to conclusions just yet based on only short song samples that most of us have heard only once or twice. I look forward to sinking my teeth into the actual album!

With regards to both the Chickenfoot & Van Halen albums coming soon… let’s just keep our expectations realistic. Neither band is going to make an album that’s as good as Van Halen’s classic albums. Those albums were lightning in a bottle, never to be matched again. IMO, no band can make music better than that stuff (and of course that includes Van Halen now). What we can hope for are two fantastic rock albums!

  • Mr. Mike

The problem is unfortunately Joe. His music is not suited to a bluesy band, the type of band that can organically sprout music that sounds off the cuff. He is too structured. He’s awesome, but not for a band that is aching to be a roadhouse blues band. They need a Keith Richards type.

  • D.O.A.

    @ Herb

Kenny Aaronson…different guy. Played bass in the HSAS project. Gotta give props to you though…. You’re right on the money with your editorial view. I was thinking along the same line.

This is sounding pretty darn fine to me. Looking forward to laying my hands and ears on a copy.

  • Littledreamer

I like what I hear but the same issue with this as I had with the first CF album is I just don’t like the way Mike’s vocals are recorded. I always thought there was such a unique quality to how Sam and Mike sounded together in VH.

  • Pete

I don’t think 90 seconds gives half of these songs justice.

    Different Devil sounds good
Come Closer…love it! IDK why, but reminded me of a “Secrets” vibe
Dubai Blues, sounds like a great song

I’m excited for the album and for the band. i’m a fan of VH as well, this will be a great year for both bands…and in turn, a great year for us..the fans. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and all the junk that comes out today needs a remedy.
I appreciate CF; the music they make and the spirit and showmanship they bring to the stage. I’m sure I’ll say the same about VH in a few months…and possibly other bands like RUSH and Black Sabbath soon there after. But a lot of complaining on here about some great musicians.
With the stuff on the radio today, I’d think most would embrace this stuff!!

CHICAGO RADIO NEEDS TO START PLAYING CHICKENFOOT!!!

  • Iroc-Z

You know… It’s funny. When Chickenfoot 1st came out I didn’t care for it at all. But then I was at a party a few months back and my buddy popped in the 1st Chickenfoot CD and I really liked it a lot and bought the CD. I then realized that I was hating on Chickenfoot because I was waiting to hear Van Halen. Folks… the rule to listening and appreciating Chickenfoot or any other music for that matter is that music is music in their own right. I appreciate Chickenfoot even more because they didn’t try to sound like Van Halen. I love other bands like Dream Theater, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Aerosmith etc.. and they sound nothing alike but I like them for their own styles. I’m definitely buying the new CD and a ticket to the show. Great guys, Great Band, Great Music! A+++!

  • EEASCURLY

Of course Sammy is gonna say it’s the best effort he has worked on – he’s trying to get attention for the band…not for money but to put a finger up to VH – it’s really obvious. I can’t believe he compared Chickenfoot to Zeppelin a while ago – that is total blasphemy.

  • Joe

Last temptation and Lighten up are the only two songs that caught my attention right away but I’ll wait to reserve judgement until i hear the whole album.

  • Let’s Rock

Good to see your post Sparks…

Back from the dead. New material does that to people.

I’m going to hold judgement until I hear the full length songs. But they all have good qualities; i.e., it’s rock and it’s new and it’s coming soon, no doubt about it.

Good to see the fire being carried by those who know how to carry it.

While we wait for the fire makers!!

    The Nation Waits

  • Al S.

Best of luck to Sammy and the gang!

How much longer do we have to wait for the new VH material? I am beginning to think that this will never transpire.

  • Kiko

Who cares? They’re no more than other bands left overs.

  • LiLBuddy

I’d rank them in this order”

Top 5 on the list are ‘Killer’

    Last Temptation
    Different Devil
    Big Foot
    Somethings gone wrong
    Alright Alright
Dubai Blues (sounds like a Satriani song)
    Lighten Up

    I don’t care for:

Three and a half letters (but again it’s only 90sec so…)

  • Joe

HA HA KIKO! Could you be more negative? Satch isn’t a band left over is he?

  • papichulo

Robert, you are high. Wait for new VH to determine that the brothers can’t touch chickenfoot.

  • JoeyH

I hate to say I’m disappointed but so far I am. I wasn’t looking for ou812 part 2, I was ready to rock. I think the boys dropped the ball on this one. I hope my opinion changes after listening to all the songs in there entirety.

  • No Mas Tony

Well, based on the sample clips I give it a 9 on a 10 scale!!! This album is ‘heavier’ in the sense that it’s blusier and grittier. Even the songs on the album that are slower in tempo, like “Different Devil”, “Come Closer”, “Something Gone Wrong” all have intricate melodies and are very catchy. The lyrics are deeper and more thought provoking than the last album too. I instantly loved the first song, “Last Temptation”, better variety in the guitar riff and vocals (IMO) than “Big Foot” and I wish they released that instead for their first single. Maybe the logic is to start with a simpler title, like serving an appetizer before the main course? “Up Next” is a good straight-forward rocker too. Really, the only song I dislike on this album (based on the short snippet anyway) is “Three and a Half Letters”— it wasn’t cohesive enough for me. I didn’t like Sam breaking off into spoken word with all the stuff about the out of work soldier, etc. Küdos for singing about it (as I’ve been in that boat before), but the song itself was iffy.
“Alright Alright”, which lacked some variety for my taste but the hook and refrain sounds great. The vocals, thanks to Mike, sound fucking amazing. I hear Sammy getting some critiques for being too ‘screamy’ at times but you really hear the range the guy has this go-around… Especially “Different Devil”, which will probably be a very commercially successful track. “Dubai Blues”: couldn’t wait to hear it based on the title, and it didn’t let me down. “Something Gone Wrong” is probably my favorite. I hear the Zeppelin influence on that one big time; the guitar sounds less amplified and a little rawer. The foot is definitely defining their sound as heavy on the blues, guitar driven rock. They aren’t trying to make experimental rock here folks, so like the song says “LIGHTEN UP!”

Can’t wait to blast this cd on my way to work! :-)

  • sephryan

Hmmmmmm.. Guess I can’t say I was blown away either. I was really hoping this new album one would really grab me by the testicles but unfortunately the first 90 seconds of all the songs didn’t really do that. I don’t know, everything Sam has done since he started recording with the Wabos all sounds the same to me. I don’t know if its the way they record Sam’s voice or what but he just hasn’t had that big time live sound like on the first few albums he did with Van Halen. I remember thinking the same thing listening to Marching to Mars. Having said all that, I am glad to hear something new at least. Thanks CF!! I do like hearing Mike during the chorus. You get a little hint of where all that great backing vocals came from on all the old VH albums.

  • =VH=OZMAN

@ Ben, I agree this album sounds like one of Sammy’s rushed to pay off the ex-wife legal expenses album!!!! Sounds no different to the first album, in fact it sounds like the songs left off the 1st chickentfoot album.

Van Halen’s new album could not come any sooner after hearing what Sam & his foot guys have just dished up!!! But I agree with most VH fans here of no message or update for the fans from Van Halen themselves. Even a short 30 sec video message is not too much time taken out of one person’s life. If I can take 10 minutes out of my work to check on whets new with Van Halen (I’ll get fired if the boss finds out!), then I’m sure Van Halen can do likewise. After all I’m the one that’ll be buying their new album (maybe 2 copies!) and concert tickets, & topping up their bank accounts!! That doesn’t concern me, but what concerns me is the lack of fan interaction. All I want is a message, ANYTHING telling us fans what the fuck is going on!!!!! Just remember that it was the fans that made Van Halen. They are the people’s band, aren’t they?

In the past (pre internet, etc) artists’ use to complain forever about the media writing BS about their music or not writing about them at all for that matter!! Yet today it’s never been better for them to have direct contact with their fans & control how they are seen & heard in public. The tables have turned it’s the media that is irrelevant now. Who needs MTV now!! They play shit; I don’t want my band on their channel it’s not cool to be on MTV today!!

My plea to Van Halen is give us fans just 5 minutes of your time, get on that computer and update your tweeter, facebook or even myspace pages. Don’t give us you’re shopping list or what you had for dinner garbage that the cheap BS celebrities do today, just give us an update like “Alex just slam down a great drum take” or “Ed’s laying down solo no.2 on track 3” or even “Dave’s got a new plant in his vocal booth!!” lol. As for the official Van Halen website, why don’t you just leave it to the loyal VH people that operate this site “Van Halen News Desk”, they have kept you guys relevant in today’s music/media landscape. Kudos VHND!!!!

  • Chicken Joe

The day Sammy stops bad mouthing Eddie in public is the day I’ll go out and buy this record, sorry Mikey. I will still buy your hot sauce though, that stuff is smokin’!!! Cheers

  • Ace

That is just awful stuff! Hard on the ears, and while I applaud Sam’s efforts to write better lyrics and change from the first record. It is what it is.

When you are washed up lyrically and past your prime as a singer, this is the kind of noise produced.

For me these songs were ran thru the express lane and packaged asap before Smith had to leave. This record will not sell as many copies as CF I. Speaking of Smith, he seems to have disappeared from his thunderous sticks on CF I.

One of those records that will end up in the 4.99 pile.

  • Zeman

I don’t like it except for Mikey On Dubai Blues…bring it home Mikey!

  • Remix2011

Sammy can’t wait to play this live? Every song, minus Bigfoot, is the one I’d either miss to go take a pi$$ or buy another beer. Bland, boring and not memorable. A collection of B-sides. Album sounds rushed. I don’t have one-millionth of either of the four’s musical talents but I certainly do have the ability to judge music and this is just disappointing. Bigfoot sounded so promising…..

    Too bad.

  • rockenvelop

From what can be heard in a mere 90 seconds per track, I like it, will buy it and enjoy it. I also eagerly await the new Van Halen album.

    Go Chickenfoot
    Go Van Halen

We need good music now more than ever!

  • Jor-L5150

in spite of chad smiths video- there will STILL be people who slam sammy for going on without him.

  • http://twitter.com/MilesGrindey Grindstonem

personally, I dislike this album so far, but VH is bringing out a new album (fingers crossed) so who cares!?
