VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Studio Encounter with Eddie Van Halen

Guitar legend Nuno Bettencourt was recently at Henson Studios to do some writing and mixing. Unbeknownst to him, his favorite rock band from his youth were secretly using the very same studios to record their upcoming album. Inspired by his chance encounter with Eddie Van Halen that day, Nuno wrote a story about it, which he contributed to  the upcoming hardcover photo book, Eddie Van Halen, by Neil Zlozower.

The Van Halen News Desk has the exclusive on Nuno Bettencourt’s contribution in the book, below:

I’m writing this on January 19, 2011, some thirty-three years after the Shock Heard Around the World. I’m referring of course to Van Halen.

Earlier today I was at Henson Studios—the old Charlie Chaplin movie lot—to do a writing session in the mixing room. As I was about to enter the room, my ears demanded that my feet stop in their tracks. What caused me to stop was a familiar sound from the room across the hall. This sound was desperately trying to break through the double-thick walls of the studio.

It was faint, but even so, there was no mistaking the power of the sound that was seeping through those walls, because there can only be one Edward.

I looked around to make sure no one was around, and then walked over and put my ear to the wall. I closed my eyes and listened intensely, and between the vibration and what I actually heard—poof!—I was transformed from forty-four to fourteen years old. Then, for the next three minutes, like a burst of electricity running through me, I saw and heard the soundtrack of my life flash before me. Back to the minute I walked into my brother’s room and heard “Running with the Devil” for the first time and I froze, staring at the record player with my mouth open like I was seeing porn for the first time, trying to comprehend what I was hearing. If that wasn’t scary enough, my brother then played another track, which opened with the thunder of the greatest, most individual and under-celebrated drummer in the world, King Alex Van Halen: PaDaLaBum PaDaLaBum . . . “Eruption!” At that point I looked at my brother and asked if we were being invaded by aliens, and what planet Edward Van Halen was from.

We’ve only had a handful of legendary guitarists whose styles were influential from the moment they hit the scene. Eddie not only had a groundbreaking style and sound, but as Van Halen’s discography shows, he and the band went on to make great and important music throughout their career.

Edward is a not only a great guitarist, he is a true genius and innovator. Like the legendary guitarists before him, he brought guitar to a new level, but unlike them, he reinvented the guitar one album after the other. It was fucking mind-boggling to listen to each new record. How could this be? We figured, Okay, Ed, you did it! “Atomic Punk,” “I’m the One,” et cetera, on Van Halen were improbable enough. Then what? He fucking did it again with Van Halen II! “Spanish Fly,” “Somebody Get Me a Doctor,” and “Outta Love Again.” Then on Women and Children First there’s “Everybody Wants Some,” “Take Your Whiskey Home,” “Loss of Control,” . . . and then came my favorite VH album, Fair Warning! I thought, It’s four albums in, he’s definitely gonna start repeating himself. Drop the needle . . . and . . . wait for it . . . it’s fading in . . . no fucking way . . . “Mean Streets”! This guy is not human. Then “Unchained”?! I was convinced now that he really was an alien from another planet. And the list goes on: “Cathedral,” “Little Guitars,” “Hot for Teacher,” “Top Jimmy.” The reinvention and innovation was relentless, and goes on till today.

What’s even more incredible is that he did this without ever doing a long-winded, “look at me” instrumental solo record; he did it while being one of the tastiest rhythm players around, and while still serving the most important part, the Song.

I ran into Edward an hour later in the hallway, and after receiving a hello and a warm hug from the man who changed the world, I asked, “How’s it coming along in there?” And Ed said, “It’s cool. . . . I’m a little nervous, though.” I said, “Nervous? You!? Eddie Van? The Master? Do you have any idea what you have done? The gifts you have given us for over thirty years? You single-handedly changed the history of how we play guitar!” And with that grin that we have been seeing on Eddie’s face for as long as we can remember, he looked me in the eye and said, “I know . . . why do you think I’m nervous?” Then he walked off like John Wayne, straight back into the studio.

I can’t imagine how annoying it must be to constantly be treated like that : “You!? Eddie Van? The Master? Do you have any idea what you have done? The gifts you have given us for over thirty years? You single-handedly changed the history of how we play guitar!”…

  • Waldo

    Eddie,

Please bring back Michael Anthony. If not now, at some time down the road. The band is just not the same – musically and otherwise – without him.

“Ive said more than once Sammy isnt perfect. He can be guilty of overhyping and the ego being pretty high. BUT let’s see… Who’s guilty of the same behavior I wonder? A certain glittery Diamond perhaps?”

Yes, Dave has a HUGE ego but he never lied (unless you want to count the time he lied about their age). And don’t forget that Dave is an original member – one of the four legends who CREATED THIS BAND! So like Eddie, Alex and Mike, he will always command a higher level of respect. Some Sammy fans just don’t get that.

  • jeff adams

Well said Halen High, cause in the end it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s how good you looked. Always loved that quote Dave.

Very very well said Halen High…… You are saluted…

  • York

I can’t remember if it was this article or another but somewhere suggested Heard Ya Missed us, We’re Back, as a title. I like that one. The albumis going to kisk ass. If you doubt, Bieber needs another fan.

How about a song with Eddie on drums and Alex on guitar?

  • Panama Red

@ Joel, I remember the Quincy Jones / Michael Jackson story very well but I don’t remember the one you mentioned about Ed recording Diver Down and seeing Billy Idol’s motorcycle parked outside. What was the deal about that? Would you or anyone care to enlighten me? I’m curious.
The Letterman thing about the guy giving Eddie and Dave a ride sounds more familiar but I can’t recall that one either.

HOLY SHOOT!!!!!!!!! So stoked for the new album! I am dying for a teaser! I mean I may be Die hard and I can’t even describe how die hard but having no song teaser or anything is killing me!!! Well at least there’s gunna be new material and the boys will be on the road!!!!!

I’m sure VH has a crazy idea for the album cover that we will all laugh about after. I was reading thoughtful comments about the never ending Diamond Dave vs. Red Rocker fan debate. And I have to say that Halen High brought up a great topic. I am personally a huge fan of all three versions of VH. I currently have VH3 in my truck. I grew up on Classic VH, I loved Sams’s version in high school (I’m 40)and I appreciated what Gary brought to the table. Why is it almost a sin to love all versions of VH? Dave was a King in VH. No doubt. Sammy was on top of his game as well. Everyone loved them. Is it a crime to love them both? What about Gary? He tried like hell. Give him credit. Those were gigantic shoes to fill. Anyways. I want to try and end the competition that we fans created between the singers. They were all successful and awesome in their own ways. Let’s not talk about books or quotes or anything else. Let’s concentrate on the most important aspect, and that’s the music they made. RothArmy, you guys are awesome and I love your comments. For the most part, they are hilarious. Sammy fans are a little more emotional…I know, I love Sammy’s stuff, all of it. I have to read all of their man-love and I get sick of it, too. But Roth Leaps man crush for Dave is apparent as well. So there you go. So let’s all learn to get along and ready ourselves for the blast-off of what possibly might be the best rock music release of the new milenium. Rock on, guys.

  • ADK/VH

Anyone who hasn’t listened to Drop Dead Legs in a while, should do it now…..my god, man. Electrifying.

  • Rhymes

About the new record. They must release it as LP, just listen to side 2 of Fair Warning. It’s killer! Van Halen sounds much metter on vinyl! :)

  • JACK N SAM

Must be aggravating sometimes to know that every little thing you say to anyone ends up in the news. This is a personal creative process. While I’m sure they appreciate the enthusiasm, I bet they like their privacy while they are doing this.

  • FrankenFoot

The industry has changed so much.

Doubtful that a classic style VH album would be received well by critics and fans. We’ve got plenty of the classic stuff already and it’s been played to death. Even if Ed went to some different guitars, much like he did during the Hagar era, that would be a big step for the classic lineup. No doubt Wolfie will have some influence as well on the music.

I worry more about the relationships than anything else. Dave is a real tool and obviously difficult to be around. If they were going to replace Mike, I wish they would have improved the bass position and gone after Billy Sheehan instead of Wolfie. Even though Eddie has a connection with his son, the fans don’t. We were connected to MIke for 2 decades.

I hope for the best and plan for the worst. They may have had to move away from 5150 because of the temptations to stay home and get hammered. Very complicated situation with VH. Not a good sign this is dragging on for so long and they’re headed overseas to play more of the old stuff or break in the new.

Both reunion tours have happened…now’s the time for new music…now’s the time to find out who the real fans are, or are going to be…

  • ikethebird

Sounds promising but I wonder why this wasn’t recorded at 5150.

  • York

I am also liking the VH VII idea. Maybe for a cover they could do a slight return to the first VH album. Only instead of the band members there would be symbols for each in their place. DLR would be a big diamond, Eddie could use one of his guitars, Alex could be a huge ass gong, and Wolfie would be a nasty looking wolf with a chicken’s foot dangling from his mouth.

  • Sparks on 8/23/11(?!)

@freddiegirl- Panama Red & I had a similar Mammoth & Red Ball Jet cover discussion a lil’ while back, too. I think we’ve all gone completely nuts. And besides, a Red Ball Jet was a sneaker kids wore back in the ’60′s I think. Now imagine a Mammoth with two pair of those laced up. You get a cross between Snuffaluffagus (Sesame St. Anyone?) and the orange monster from Bugs Bunny. Good Grief!

Anyway, thought of a couple of silly titles…
    - No, THIS Is It. (still too soon fire Jacko jokes?)
    - Here’s Some Of That Stuff That We Told You That You Couldn’t Get No More.

  • Halen High

    FrankenFoot says:
“I worry more about the relationships than anything else. Dave is a real tool and obviously difficult to be around.”

You don’t like Dave. You don’t like Wolf. You call yourself ‘Foot’…….and you’re not fooling anyone with your base-less jab at our frontman. So please don’t attend the tour – anti-Classic Van Halen tools like you were not missed on the last tour – and you won’t be on this one either.

  • freddiegirl

Sparks…but, but…a big mammoth with sneakers sound so hilarous!
Yeah, we’re all a little nuts. You have to be to deal with being a die-hard Halen-Head I think.

  • Wilkster5150

@Halen High: Well said regarding FrankenFoot.
@Sparks: What about a mammoth wearing Ed’s sneakers stomping on what appears to be a chicken, as the only thing that can be seen is one little foot sticking out from under the sneakers?

  • Halen High

    Wilkster5150 says:
“@Halen High: Well said regarding FrankenFoot.”

Cheers mate! I’m not trying to start shit, but in another thread this guy described ’1984′ as……….wait for it……….a “debacle”. BUWAHAHAHAHAHAH!

  • Wilkster5150

    @Halen High
What the hell? 1984 a debacle? Well if that was a “debacle” then here is a toast to hoping the new album is a collosal one! Top 3 rock albums ever: 1.WACF, 2. FW, 3. 1984.

  • Panama Red

Halen High – I can’t hardly conceive of the fact that any Van Halen fan would consider 1984 to be anything but amazing.
I’ve always thought of 1984 as almost a “Best Of” album. Just about every song on it could’ve been a hit single, it’s amazing! It’s got some of my all time fav VH songs, Drop Dead Legs, House of Pain, and the insanely awesome Girl Gone Bad. It’s an absolutely incredible album.

  • SMC

I want this to be the best album ever, but how are they gana pull off the over the top vocals? Dave seemed to start losing his vocals back in the early 90′s.

  • McQuestion

I`m really surprised to see Ed using a facility other than 5150. It was good enough for 1984 wasn’t it? Also, I thought Nuno’s fav guitarist was Brian May.

    Good story though.

  • http://spacecactus.comheavyrolls.com Greg Lime Williams

Exellent job Mr. B. You are no slouch on the axe your damn self. Van Halens next album will be the first music I have purchased in years.

  • 3hater

Maybe the “1984 debacle” is referring the VH breakup and not the album??? But that was ’85…maybe someone REALLY hates any keyboards?

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    3hater:

    Funny you mention that….

I remember this guy once telling me that the first time he heard the opening tracks 1984/Jump he almost threw the record out the window. He was like: this isnt fuckin’ VH!!!
LOL. I’ve met a lot of people over the years, when discussing music, have said the same. They were HORRIFIED at first when they heard jump. Yeah….it wasnt easy for many to accept keyboards in this band. Why? Cause those first 5 albums before it were meat and potato down and dirty straight up rock…period. So maybe this also anwsers the question of why so many were turned off by the hagar era.

  • freddiegirl

Dirty Duck..You nailed it. I was horrified to see Eddie playing keyboards on Jump. And he had the nerve to smile in that video as well! Ugh! Today Jump remains my least fav ever Dave-era VH song. But..1984 did have Girl Gone Bad, Top Jimmy, Hot For Teacher ect. to make up for that. It’s such an irony to me that Jump remains their only number one hit… The use of keyboards was one of the reasons it took me forever to warm up to the Hagar-era although I did like Good Enough, Best of Both Worlds and 5150 right away.

  • Halen High

    3hater says:
“Maybe the “1984 debacle” is referring the VH breakup and not the album??? But that was ’85…”

Well I did ask him to clarify that – but no reply.

  • Halen High

    Panama Red says:
“Halen High – I can’t hardly conceive of the fact that any Van Halen fan would consider 1984 to be anything but amazing.”

Yeah I know. 1984 really was a classic hard rock album for the ages. Even Jump, though not one for the purists, has a brilliant, timeless melody that with Dave’s lyrics still connects with young people today. And the tour was just HUGE. Fans and artists who were lucky enough to see it, still talk about it today.

  • Halen High

    freddiegirl says:
“Dirty Duck..You nailed it. I was horrified to see Eddie playing keyboards on Jump. And he had the nerve to smile in that video as well! Ugh! Today Jump remains my least fav ever Dave-era VH song….”

Hey freddiegirl – I would rather Eddie played it all on guitar with no keyboards but I still LOVE JUMP! Not in my top 20 CVH tunes but I do love it’s catchy pop melody, Dave’s interesting use of metaphors and Eddie’s solo. Maybe it’s my diverse musical tastes – I do like a good pop-rock song. And I think the video is unforgettable. The thing about Jump is, it helped open them up to a mass audience, but they got the balance right by then releasing Panama and Hot For Teacher to show people what they are REALLY all about. :)

  • freddiegirl

Halen High..you’re right; Jump opened a lot of doors for VH. Even though it’s not my fav VH tune it’s still loads better than a lot of stuff that passes for rock these days. I have to say for pure pop rock though, Def Leppard is pretty cool.. ;)

I do enjoy the Jump video but I love Panama and Hot for Teacher even more. HFT remains not only my fav VH video but probably my fav rock video of all time. What’s not to like? VH dancing around in awful matching red suits, the little VH kids, Waldo, and best of all; Eddie’s awesome solo walking down those library tables!

  • Halen HIgh

I like Def Lep. Saw them live a couple of years ago and they rocked – they played a lot of their early stuff like Photograph. Some of their ballads are so corny lyrically but I can still appreciate the music. Yeah – they do the pop-rock thing better than most. But I’m not going to try and change your mind about Jump – I remember you said you are a guitar player so I totally understand where you are coming from with Eddie playing keyboards – I bet you were shocked! That was the mid-80s alright.

As for HFT, Eddie’s solo while walking down those library tables is pure rock n’ roll rebellion! To hell with the books – let’s rock! I bet a lot of teachers HATED that video :)

  • http://idl3mind.tumblr.com idl3mind

Why would VH record at Henson when they could record at 5150?

  • freddiegirl

Halen High..I got you to give Dancing in the Streets a second listen so I’ll go listen to Jump again.. :) And yes as a guitar player…I was shocked! I remember staring at the telly in disbelief! Ah..it was what it was.

Def Leppard are fun. Their lyrics can be cheesy but it’s hard to argue with pure polished rock pop tunes like Rock Rock (til You Drop), High and Dry and Let it Rock. :) They always sound so tinny though when I play them after something like AC/DC’s What’s Next to the Moon or anything on FW or WACF!

  • littledreamer

Don’t get me started on HFT. The video is the perfect short comedy. Al can’t dance. Mike was surprisingly good. The music for HFT is on my top 10 of best rock songs. Could that song have done better with different lyrics? HFT didn’t and still doesn’t get as much play compared to Jump and Panama though musically, it’s better than the latter two.

  • anythingleftinthatbottle

My 7 year old makes me play 1984 and Jump all the time. Though I am a guitar player I have REALLY began to love hearing it. My kid and I act like fools in my shop with it cranked up.

I have really been listening to it with fresh ears and the rythym behind the solo is REALLY cool. You gotta listen to what Ed and Al are doing. Eddie was always great at modulating or completely changing the rhythym during his solos. I have more fun listening to his rhythym’s than his solos some times.Any way…@ Freddie girl…There’s a penny for a penny’s worth of thought.

  • Wilkster5150

To me Jump gets better with age. I just love the music, the video, the vocals, the solos, and as a drummer it really is a fun song to play actually.
@freddiegirl What’s Next To The Moon? GREAT song. Powerage and Let There Be Rock are by far my favorite ACDC albums.

  • Wilkster5150

@Halen High Not surprising that jack wad wouldnt clarify his view of 1984 being a debacle. He doesnt even have a chickenfoot, let alone a leg, to stand on with that assinine statement!

  • freddiegirl

Wilkster5150…Yep. Powerage and Let There Be Rock are my favs as well. Both are sooo underrated!

    @freddiegirl
Bon Scott is my 2nd fav rock singer behind Dave. Too bad he died just as they were on the cusp of massive worldwide fame. I dont know why but I’ve always enjoyed playin Gone Shootin! Not an exciting song on drums(like all ACDC lol) but its just got a sweet groove to it.

  • http://reginator.net/ Reggie

I was gettin’ anxious just reading about the studio encounter – AWESOME!!!

  • freddiegirl

Wilkster5150: Me too. :) Loved Bon. Nobody did drunken debauchery like him. I always felt too, that he was ‘real’ in the sense that you really believed he was going to do or had done the things he sang about. Gone Shootin’ is a fantastic song. All of Powerage is soo good.

  • ImTheOne

Hey hey coming back to the thread its nice to see that a couple of people like my VH VII idea. I mean do the maths, after the 6 pack its simply gotta be VH 7! Eddie, Dave, Alex, Wolfie (in no particular order), if you see this and you go for it, I want a backstage shake hands for your Amsterdam (NL) concert as my royalty :) Please pleeeease pleaaaaaaazzz :)

I herewith authorize VHND to forward my email upon request of any VH member or their reps :)

  • Mike S

This album is not about Eddie’s performance, it all comes down to Dave and what he brought to the table. Even on VHIII the music was there, Gary just didn’t sing the way he can and sung in only one range for the most part. This is about Dave’s lyrics not being so corny like they are on his solo albums.

  • Wilkster5150

@freddiegirl Bon’s voice always reminds me of Roger Rabbit on speed. He and Dave might not be the most “technical” singers, but hands down they were/are the best. Its hard for me to choose which one I like better, Powerage or Let There Be Rock. Dog Eat Dog is another fun one to pound the skins to. Sort of some “jungle drums” on that, but not like Al’s of course.
