VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Eddie Van Halen to appear on Dweezil Zappa CD

Eddie Van Halen recorded a solo for “What The Hell Was I Thinking?”, the long-awaited new project from guitarist Dweezil Zappa.

From The Huffington Post:

Mike Ragogna: You had another great project that you’ve been working on, and forgive me if I don’t know anymore about it than this, but it’s your “What The Hell Was I Thinking?” project, right?

Dweezil Zappa: Yeah, it’s a record that I started a while ago, and I just haven’t had a chance to really put it all together. I know I’m probably going to add some changes based on my own technical improvements to my playing. I guess the best way to describe the project is it’s an audio movie. I recorded a bunch of different music that all segues together, so it’s constantly morphing and turning. Each little segment has its own little audio environment, and then you have these cameo appearances by all these different guitar players who sort of start falling out of the speakers. So, it’s got about thirty different people on there so far, I’ll give you a list of some of the ones people would know: There’s Eddie Van Halen, Brian May, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Steve Morse, Angus and Malcolm Young–who never played on anything other than an AC/DC record before–Yngwie Malmsteen, Warren DeMartini from RATT, Albert Lee, Brian Setzer, there are a ton of people like Jimmy Vaughn, Robin Ford, Joe Walsh. And the thing is, all these different people, they all have a very recognizable sound, and in the world of guitar playing, that’s a real challenge–to create your own sound to where when you hear just a couple of notes you actually know who it is.

The fun of it is that you’re actually hearing a lot of these people out of context, they’re playing on things they wouldn’t normally be playing over, and that was part of the fun of making this project happen. So, either people are playing on exactly what you would expect them to play over, or something you would never expect them to play over. The Van Halen thing is pretty funny because I put this section together where I asked Edward to play sort of a “greatest hits” from all his different guitar licks. We just took different licks from different solos from different records and made him play them all and string them together in one guitar solo. That was pretty fun because it was like having your own toy Eddie Van Halen–like, “I’ll make my Eddie Van Halen play this.”

Mike Ragogna: (laughs) Oh, to own a toy Eddie Van Halen. Is there a plan to release the project anytime soon?

Dweezil Zappa: Now I’m thinking about it in a lot of different forms. When I was first thinking about making it, I didn’t ever consider that it could be performed live. But now with the band that I have, I’m almost thinking, “Maybe, if I put this thing together in the right way, it actually could be performed live.” I don’t know if I could get all the guests to play all at once, but the piece of music, in the end, is a continuous piece of music that’s seventy-five minutes long with no break. So, it might make for an interesting presentation if it could be put together in a live situation. But, you know, I have to finish the record first (laughs).

So now we know what Eddies been busy doing!

  • Diamond Dean

Dweezil is a pretty damn cool dude.

I remember Eddie wanting to do a solo album with differant singers years n years ago , then Santana did one , then slash did one n they were amazing popular , maybe Eddie couldnt find anyone who wanted to sing with him?????? oh well he has been known to waste his life away

  • patt5150

Waste his life away? F#@k you Diamond Dean, people like you piss me off beyond belief. Eddie has given us a treasure trove of amazing music over the years, God forbid he has a life and focusses on his wife and family for a while … geesh! Eddie is a great musician and an even greater person, so think before you speak … peace.

  • Jammin’ John

Alex talked Eddie out of doing that concept record.

  • Phil

“Is there a plan to release the project anytime soon?” LOL, not if Ed is involved.

  • Shyboy

Maybe this was what Dweezil and John 5 were talking about!
    :-)

  • http://www.merchnow.com blindbubbacheeks

    I’ll buy it.

  • Keith

@Shyboy … I think your onto something. But, like his friend Ed, he’s been working on this for years and years :)

  • Chris

“Greatest hits from all his different guitar licks.” Isn’t that pretty much every solo spot from every show on every tour since 1986? Dweezil could’ve just put the audio from the guitar solo from “Live Without a Net” or “Live:Right Here Right Now.” on there. Just sayin’… ;]

  • TooWalrus

Why is this news? That record is never, ever, EVER being released.

  • Vhlinks Troll

Actually Angus and Malcolm of AC|DC played on some records by Stevie Wright and Markus Hook Roll Band!

  • Handy Solo

I honestly can’t imagine all those dudes on stage playing their parts. Jezuz….the afterparty!

  • Kevin Malone

“Greatest hits from all his different guitar licks.”

Just what we all want to hear from EVH, again……….

  • J5150C

Dweez is a cool dude, and to get all those musicians on there; what a task that must’ve been.

  • ben

Great for Dweezil, if he would have wanted Ed to improvise he would have asked for it, he asked for a GH of solos, so it’s Dweezil’s CD he can ask for whatever he wants.
Can’t wait to have it on my hands.

  • chris.omeara

The Santana multi-singer thing was a sell-out that most Santana fans couldn’t stomach. Thank goodness Alex talked Ed out of doing one of those…

Now an Eddie-meets a “Blow-By-Blow”, “Wired” or “There And Back”-type instrumental excursion… that could be truely special… No singers to fight with, but he’d need a good producer to make sure it doesn’t end up like the Sacred Sin cr*p… :)

  • Dooley

Could be great, could be a clusterfuck with too many “chefs
    in the kicthen”…I dunno.

  • http://www.vhnd.com Garrett

I think the multi-vocalist CD could be done well….I agree that the Santana one was pretty terrible…but the new Slash record is pretty killer actually….If EVH did one like Slash, I would be cool with it.

  • Adrian

I would love to hear a Edward solo record I actually consider Van Halen III to be just that and if you treat it like that and not think of it as the band Van Halen its actually a very interesting exploration in Eddie’s songwriting, tone, palying, ect…

  • HollywoodAJM

Eddie Vab Halen did have a sollo record……..it was called van halen 3……..

  • Fat Cat

    @Adrian,

Excellent call! Unfortunatly, it was cool to not like Gary, so it fell on deaf ears.

    @HollywoodAJM,

You’re not the first and you won’t be the last!!!

  • http://none 12beerstogo

Adrian and Hollywood-good call.VHIII was Eddie’s solo album.

  • Dan

Maybe this is what Eddie said on George Lopez

Eddie- congats George… and look for me on a new cd not named Van Halen

    Producer- wait… wait… cut…. Eddie you can’t say that!

    =)

  • http://vhnd.com 51yr old fan

or maybe this is the album ed is talking about!

  • http://www.vhnd.com Pat G.

Wonder if we’ll ever get to hear Ed playing a solo on one of his OWN records, for fucks sake!!!!!!!! But if Dweezil can get him motivated enough to jam on his CD, then maybe there is still hope for the new VH record…………a little bit of hope…………..not much more…….

  • Deion

@chris.omeara: you never know how it wouldve turned out!!! think of how great a Robert plant/ EVH colabo would be…

  • KTC5150

…Excuse me if I am wrong, but didn’t Ed’s segment get recorded YEARS AGO!? I remember hearing about this project 20 YEARS AGO when Guitar World or one of those rags were doing an interview w/ Ed & Dweezil back in ’93 or ’94… It was a cover story w/ Ed & Dweezil & Dewwze was holding the “Shamer 5149 1/2″… any refutes?

  • http://VHND HIKER MAN

I CANT REMEMBER WHAT THE OTHER SONG WAS CALLED OFF OF THE TWISTER SOUND TRACK, NO WORDS BUT KILLER MUSIC, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR SOME MORE OF THIS FROM ED AND ALEX

  • http://vhnd Emery

Van Halen – Alex Drum Solo (Toronto, ON, Canada ´95) This is the best drum solo out there. Alex has that sound it makes me jump!

  • Bluesbro

It is Robben Ford, not Robin. And he is an incredible Blues / Rock guitarist. I’ve seen him many times live. I’d put him up there with anyone mentioned here, including Eddie. He is a weak singer however, especially compared to his guitar prowess.

  • http://www.youtube.com/vhlvr imcrossingover

    @HIKER MAN
It was called “Respect the Wind,” and I’d love to hear something form the VH camp even if it’s just a solo.

  • D L R

I would like to hear anything Eddie might like to say about what he has been up too. He is known to have been in poor health at times, but I still and always will support EVH and his band whoever might be in it.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtOr65jRm0w Skutch

I would like to hear this. Dweezil is seriously cool.

  • scottt

Yes KTC5150, Eddie’s parts for Dweezil’s tune were recorded back in the 90′s…sometime before the ‘balance’ album,….for those who don’t know. I remember reading about Dweezil talking about how funny it was when all these amazing players would lay down there solos, because they would make weird groans and noises but they weren’t aware because they had headphones on, lol.

  • mjc

Emery, great call!big Al rocked that tour,i own the bootleg.

  • Keith

May I suggest you all listen to “Crossing Over”… search for it on you tube. It’s an awesome extra track only on the Japan release of Balance. It’s very haunting and will captivate you to how great the next tunes would be . In fact, burn that song, Humans Being, Respect the Wind, Me Wise Magic, Can’t Get This Stuff No More, It’s about Time, Up for Breakfast,& Learning to See, and hey, you gotta new CD :)

  • Diamond Dean

Patt5150, have u ever taken 12 yrs off work to focus on yr wife n family ???? Speak to hagar, Anthony and roth before you say what a great person he is . Im just saying hes wasting his talent n he treats his fans like crap , these r facts

Seriously wld have loved to hear an album with Eddie n differant singers , wld of been brilliant !!!!!

VH 3 is a VAN HALEN album , not a solo album , dont kid yrself that soi u guys can sleep better , its whats ALEX N EDDIE wanted , its probably the only true VAN HALEN album ever , n look what we got , DAVE n Sammy added their bits b4 which made the albums great .

Eddie has NEVER done a great album without them , but Roth n Hagar have done great albums without Eddie , fact.

  • Karl

Wow, only 37 posts for the promise of a new Edward recording! Take note brothers, interest is waning. Pull your fingers out before we all forget who’s in the band.

  • http://VHND HIKER MAN

    CROSSING OVER ROCKS

  • SHG

“New Edward recording”?? Jesus, that recording was done in the LATE EIGHTIES if I recall correctly. Dweezil’s “What the Hell Was I Thinking” is the Duke Nukem Forever of the guitar world. Dweezil has been working on it since he was a teenager. It’s a pet project that will never be released.
