Coming off of the success of its self-titled debut album, the supergroup Chickenfoot is ready to write the next chapter in the Chickenfoot saga. The band, which features guitar god Joe Satriani, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Sammy Hagar, Van Halen founding member Michael Anthony and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, released its debut, Chickenfoot, on June 5, 2009, and the record has since been certified gold. In order to serve their hungry fans, Chickenfoot is set to release Chickenfoot: Get Your Buzz On “Live”, a video recording of three live shows, on DVD and Blu-Ray on April 20.
But that’s not all that Chickenfoot has planned. According to guitarist Joe Satriani, the band has also started writing for its next release. “When I got off the ‘Experience Hendrix’ tour a week ago, I went right into the studio with Chad, Michael and Sammy, and we started making demos,” Satriani said. “We have started writing and recording stuff for our second album.”

hile it’s unclear what the album will sound like at this stage, one thing is certain – it will be distinctly Chickenfoot. Though some supergroups tend to have a generic sound, Chickenfoot’s music feels natural, and the intense talent of the band’s members doesn’t overwhelm the material. The band’s debut disc had a definite personality, blending rock, funk and plenty of fun. Chickenfoot displayed obvious chemistry, and Satriani noted that the band’s new material represented that as well.
“The four songs that we’ve started with are all very different from each other, and they have that Chickenfoot vibe I guess because it’s just us, the way that we tend to work with each other,” Satriani said. “We write freely and finish everything to see what we like best – we don’t set out with design, except to write good music.”
Because it is so early in the writing process (an extremely tentative date of early 2011 has been floated as a possibility for release), Satriani is hesitant to say too much about the album. However, he did make some comments on the style of the band’s sophomore effort.
“It’s gonna be a rock record without a doubt, Satriani said. “I’m really encouraged by the variety of just those four songs, and I think everyone’s looking to expand on what we started… Everybody in the band has got backgrounds and musical roots that were exploited on the first record, and I think this will have more of that.”
In other words, Chickenfoot’s second album will likely rock just as hard as the first. As the band’s members get more comfortable with each other, Chickenfoot’s material will likely expand in complexity and quality. Fans who embraced the band’s debut should have plenty to be excited about throughout the next year, thanks to the live video footage and the anticipation of new audio material.
