Alex Van Halen Hasn’t Retired: ‘I’ll Die With Sticks In My Hand’

by Eric Senich — updated October 18, 2024 Leave a Comment

When Alex Van Halen auctioned his drum equipment in June, many figured he had decided to retire from performing. Not so says Alex.

“I’m not quitting,” Alex told Billboard’s Gary Graff. “I don’t know where that came from. I’ll die with sticks in my hand.”

Although Alex is still dealing with spinal issues he’s had for decades, he’s optimistic about getting behind the drums again. “With modern technology we have now I should be OK in about five years.”

Even if Alex were able to perform these days, it wouldn’t be with his former bandmates Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony. Hagar and Anthony reached out to Alex in hopes he would take part in their Best of All Worlds tour celebrating Van Halen this past summer. They received no response. Now, Alex is stating on record that he is not accepting the invites.

“I’m not interested,” he says. “They’re not doing the band justice. They can do what they want to do. That’s not my business.”

Brothers is due October 22nd and available at the Van Halen Store. Fans who order direct from Van Halen Store will receive our Exclusive Photo Print Collection (pictured above) of the young Van Halen brothers!
