David Lee Roth has just released a new song titled “Pointing At The Moon”.
The track, released along with Dave’s artwork [via a 3-D YouTube video which you can view above], begins with a piano piece very reminiscent of “Dark Side Of The Moon”-era Pink Floyd before the lush sounds of acoustic guitar, slide guitar, piano and organ flow right into Dave’s reflective lyrics:
David Lee Roth “Pointing At The Moon” Lyrics
From the mildew to the barbecue
You came through from the classroom to the tomb
Moment of truth now, your bags are packed
With lies you can go forward, but you cannot go back
Come unto Jesus, friend
Render unto Caesar
Spend my life pointing at the moon, you spent yours looking at my finger
Next clown jumpin’ on the mattress while I’m paying dues!
Yeah, you’ll do plenty business here; what does that make you?
Friends that never climbed a mountain; halfway was the rule
Moment of truth now, your bags are packed
With lies you can go forward, but you cannot go back
What are we pretendin’ not to know here?
I ain’t askin’ questions I don’t know the answer to!
See who’s gonna lie to me
What they look like when they do
Next clown jumpin’ on the mattress while I’m payin’ dues!
Yeah, you’ll do plenty business here; what does that make you?
Careful what the words we say
‘Cuz once the bell’s been rung
The garbage that we never say is poetry when it’s sung…

The recording comes from Roth’s 2007 sessions with guitarist John 5, who told VHND he and Roth joined forces in the studio to record a batch of songs for a possible album along with Dave’s former solo band-mates, Gregg Bissonette (drums) and the late Brett Tuggle (keyboards).
