Somebody get me Dr. Bob!
Bobby Huff is a producer/songwriter who has a series of videos titled “Music Surgery with Dr. Bob”. They all include the good doctor “cutting into” rock songs in pursuit of musical perfection. In his latest episode he decided to operate on David Lee Roth’s vocals from Van Halen’s “Dance The Night Away”.
“So we’ve all heard the argument that Sammy Hagar is a more gifted singer than David Lee Roth,” said Dr. Bob. “There’s no doubt that he’s a stronger singer with a much bigger range but let’s not count out Diamond Dave just yet. Whereas Sammy Hagar sang more melodies on the Van Halen stuff, David Lee Roth just tended to scat and do his ‘Dave’ thing throughout a lot of the verses of the songs. On ‘Dance The Night Away’, however, there was much more of a melodic structure in the verses so let’s see how close Roth got to perfect pitch and if perfect pitch is better or dulls the shine on Diamond Dave.”
You be the judge. Check out the video above. Along with autocorrecting Roth’s vocals, Dr. Bob also has some fun dissecting the rest of the song’s individual performances from Eddie and Alex Van Halen along with Michael Anthony.
