On February 2nd, 1989 Van Halen played the second of two consecutive shows at the Superdome in Tokyo, Japan as they were winding down their highly successful ‘OU812’ tour.
The lineup of Sammy Hagar, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony were coming off of their second straight #1 album with ‘OU812’, which topped the charts on June 25th, 1988. It’s since gone on to sell over four million copies.

The February 2nd concert would be Van Halen’s third overall at the Tokyo Dome as they had played there previously on January 18th. In all, the band played a total of nine shows in Japan between January 18th and February 2nd of ’88. They hadn’t played in Japan since 1978.
After their February 1st and 2nd shows in Japan, Van Halen would play two more shows at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii, marking the end of a three-leg, 46-concert tour that began on September 30th, 1988 in Lexington, Kentucky. They had also headlined the Monsters of Rock Tour from May 23rd to July 30th of 1988.
