20 Years Ago: Pat Boone’s Campy Cover of Van Halen’s ‘Panama’

by VHND — updated January 31, 2017 Leave a Comment

This week marks the 20th anniversary of a Van Halen cover which no one expected!

In January 1997, the king of schmaltz, Pat Boone, laughed his way up the charts with a cover of Van Halen’s “Panama” from his album In a Metal Mood – No More Mr. Nice Guy. The entire album consisted of hard rock and heavy metal songs covered in a Las Vegas, jazz-type style by the 1950s Christian pop idol.

Listen to Pat Boone’s campy, ironic version of “Panama” above.
