VHND’s All Access Photo: 1979 Radio Appearance

During their 1979 “World Vacation” tour in support of Van Halen II, the band paid a visit to “Seattle’s Best Rock” KISW-FM. Here’s Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth with rock and roll disc jockey, Steve Slaton. Slaton hosted a nightly show on KISW called “Disco Destruction” during which he would “blow up” disco records. Van Halen were no disco fans either – Roth would start a “disco sucks” chant almost nightly during their tour that year.

Through the 1980s, KISW’s trademark station ID included the opening power-chord slam from the Thin Lizzy song “Jail Break”, followed immediately by the voice of Van Halen singer David Lee Roth naming the call letters K-I-S-W, and the station’s slogan, “Seattle’s Best Rock”. Another ID featured all four members of Van Halen yelling the call letters with David Lee Roth over the end with the slogan.

This photo was taken 35 years ago, on Aril 11th, 1979 – three days after Van Halen rocked the CaliFFornia World Music Festival.

“All Access” Photos is a weekly feature at VHND.com. Every weekend we feature a photo from a roadie, friend, or band insider. Many are never-seen-before exclusives. Tune in every weekend for more!
