VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Billy Sheehan on Van Halen, Then and Now

Examiner.com conducted an interview with Billy Sheehan who played bass on David Lee Roth’s first two solo LPs. We’ve listed the Van Halen content below:

Considered by many to be the Eddie Van Halen of bass, Billy Sheehan launched his recording career in the late ’70s with the Buffalo-based rock trio Talas, then joined original Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth’s band in the mid-’80s for two platinum-selling albums. After parting with Diamond Dave, Sheehan formed Mr. Big in 1988. Best known for its hit ballad “To Be with You”—which went to number one in 15 countries including the U.S. in 1992—Mr. Big called it quits a decade later, but in 2009 the original lineup reformed for a massive tour of Asia and Europe.

Earlier this month, the band released What If…, the first album in 15 years from the reunited rockers, which instantly went gold in Japan upon release. I spoke with Billy while he was at the music product industry’s NAMM Show in January about the new album, his long relationship with Japan, and Mr. Big’s future touring plans.

If you had a wish list of groups that you could tour with, who would it be?

Well, we did a lot of touring with Rush in the old days; a tour with Rush would be great, because they are such wonderful people. I didn’t really know them that well before we toured with them, but getting to know the guys from Rush, they are just wonderful, wonderful people. We also toured with Bryan Adams; that was pretty cool, too, because he’s got a zillion hits, and that was a lot of fun, too; a great tour.

You’ve also played with Aerosmith.

We did some shows with them in Europe and they were really successful; nice bunch of guys, too. Yeah, I don’t know—maybe Mr. Big and a couple of other acts; Tesla, maybe, or Cinderella, or guys like that—our generation of bands. In the end, it’s not so much a concern other than the fact that we just want to play.

There’s always Van Halen, right?

[Laughs] That’d be good.

Have you spoken to David Lee Roth since he got back together with Van Halen in 2007?

Not since then; I spoke with him just prior to that. He’s still my hero, you know? I still love Dave, and I still look back at the Eat ’Em and Smile days as one of the greatest things that ever happened to me.

This year also marks the 25th anniversary of Eat ’Em and Smile’s release. Has there ever been any plan to reform that group, with or without Dave?

Not that I know of. Maybe some talk that was generated that I didn’t hear about. There’s been no plans, but it’s something where I keep a candle lit, you know? Even if it was just three or four shows or eight or ten shows, it would just be a riot, because all of us—myself, Steve Vai and Gregg [Bissonette]—we are still very close friends, and the stories we tell from those days are just incredible. And all of us love Dave; he was the man. He was the biggest rock star in the world when we were working with him, and that was just an incredible trip.

What do you think of the chemistry in Van Halen now that Eddie’s son Wolfgang is on bass? Did you see them on tour?

You know, I didn’t go. To me—no offense, I love Ed and Al and Dave—but to see Mike [Anthony] not there kind of threw me a little bit, and I’m sure Wolfie’s a great player, a fine player, and a good kid. But I’m a fan, and I want to see the original lineup, you know? It was sad to see that Michael wasn’t there. I don’t know; I saw some bootleg video footage and bootleg audio, and it sounded pretty good. Eddie was killing, and Dave’s voice was in great shape. Dave’s really killing on the show I heard, and Wolfie plays bass great. But it’s just a fact that I would have really liked to see Michael up there.

I went to their show at Madison Square Garden, but something was missing.

Heartbreaking, heartbreaking. Again, I wish them well and it’s great for Wolfie; he’s Ed’s son, so that’s great. They were looking for somebody else to play bass, and I get the connection. But, you know, Michael’s an awesome player and a great vocalist, and he was the guy, you know? Hopefully, who knows what the future may bring.

What was it like when your band Talas opened for Van Halen on their 1980 tour?

It was like a Ph.D. in show business. I mean, we got to see some stuff that we had no idea, you know, that show business worked that way. And we saw [Van Halen] so consistently awesome, that on their worst night they were merely spectacular, these guys [laughs]—it was like a military operation. They’d get up and hit that stage, and man—that machine would kick in, amazing. From the openings to the banter between songs, Dave’s storytelling and Eddie’s spectacular playing, the whole band, the groove, and oh—it was just amazing. I look back on it as one of the luckiest things that ever happened; we opened for them about 30 or 40 shows in 1980—oh, God, it was amazing. I came off that tour knowing so much more about how it’s supposed to work [laughs] than I ever could have imagined on my own.

How did you get picked to open that tour?

There was a woman named Barbara Skydel with Premiere Talent in New York City, a booking agent, that booked Van Halen, the Who, a lot of the huge acts. We showcased for them in New York City for them to become our agents and to book us. Unknown to us, they sent our demo tape to Van Halen, who wanted kind of an unknown opening act, but somebody who’s not going to, you know, blow it. And they said yes—we had no idea that we were even in line for it! So the Talas guitar player [Dave Constantino] pulled up to pick me up for a gig and he had a bottle of champagne with him…he broke the news, we freaked out. When we did the shows they were actually pretty cool with us; they let us do a couple of encores and we did really well in front of the crowd. To this day, I get e-mail from people that saw that show.

Class act as always Sheehan. Imagine we will! I can never see the classic line up reforming ever again!

  • freddiegirl

Very cool read! Thanks for posting! I totally get where Sheehan is coming from when he talks about MA although I admit it’s not a deterrant for me. Awesome that the band from EEAS is still so close; I’d love to hear some of those stories!

  • Atomic Pete

I’ve met Billy a number of times and he is a
super guy. At the time he said he was working
on something really big but wasn’t allowed to say what it was.
Turned out to be the DLR gig.Eat Em And Smile was
a great album. Too bad they culdn’t keep that lineup for
a few more albums. They really kicked!

  • Sparks on the Horizon!!!

By 7 pm tonight, the term “class act” will be on this thread atleast 25 times. I agree with you times two, Freddiegirl. I guess that means he’d deliver a flat out NO if he were asked to play back in ’07, huh? No way. He’d be there. But who the hell am I? Everybody’s good in the ‘hood. Let’s bring on the new releases!

  • tim

Sheehan highlights the big thing I am wondering about this new VH album: will Ed, Dave, Alex, Wolfie and John Shanks be able to come up with a good approximation of Anthony’s signature background harmonies? They have an almost finished album with Dave from 2001- maybe they could use some of the harmony tracks off that..
(and I would say an ‘Eat ‘Em & Smile’ reunion tour is well down the priority list for Dave at this time!)

  • DiamondDean

The greatest bass player ever!! Respect

  • La

I don´t know if M.Anthony would come back to VH. I think he´s doing a great job on Chickenfoot.
I always think to myself that would be amazing to see Billy Sheehan on VH.
And Billy you do have a great voice either.

  • Albert Jackson Munoz

Interesting to say the least…………nice to hear what he thinks about Micheal Anthony not being in the band.

  • Towers McQuestion

Just imagine seeing so many shows on the 1980 tour! What a grand year that must have been for Sheehan!

Turns out he’s a Mike fan, too.

  • ba

Those compliments carry a lot of weight coming from Sheehan.

  • http://vhnd.com VH4

The MA thing certainly bothers a lot of people more than it does me…I guess it`s always been about what Ed and Dave are doing for me, and although I`m not denying that Mike`s probably been badly treated, it was (one-quarter) inevitable that Ed would get Wolfie in there when he was old enough.

It`s often rumoured as something Ed wanted back in the 80s, but I wonder how Billy would have fitted in with the VH sound? It might have been a bit much, like EEAS is at times – although I appreciate the musicianship. It`s always good to hear stories about early VH and solo Dave, and I bet Billy, Steve Vai and Gregg Bissonette had some damn good times…

  • chriso

That was a great band & I loved “Skyscraper”. I always wondered why Roth didn’t reband with that line-up during his lean hungry “Nobody-wants-to-buy-my-albums anymore years”…

  • JohnO

Mr. Big’s new album is great.

  • Lupercal

Much like some people say Sammy was the only singer that could replace Dave, Sheehan and Vai were the only other guys that could rock with David Lee Roth. The perfect combination of bombastic sound and awesome skill. The stuff I’ve seen and heard from the first tour and first two albums were amazing.

Mr Big’s new album is also pretty good. Sheehan seems to have a great connection with some of the guitarists that he works with, Vai and Gilbert are pretty much the only other guys that I could see that could do a good job of covering Van Halen. No they’re not as good as Eddie, but they do a damn good job of playing.

  • Keith

Because it’s all what Ed wants , not what the fans want or deserve.

  • Sammy Van Roth

Rush sucks. No charisma and the lead singer sounds like Rosemary Clooney.

  • Opusthe1

Eat ‘Em & Smile is one of the greatest good time rock & roll records ever. Very under appreciated.

  • Keith

If ANYBODY was to replace Mike it should have been Billy !!! He is one of the very best .

  • anythingleftinthatbottle

Billy Sheehan is a ‘Class act’

  • halenguy51

I agree, great read but did he just say “I didn’t go” then say “I went to the madison square garden show”?

  • No Mas Tony

Billy Sheehan is a really cool cat. Great interview and I liked his response to the questions. He has a way of getting his point across without sounding all negative; like where he says: “To me— ‘no offense’, I love Ed and Al and Dave—but to see Mike [Anthony] not there kind of threw me a little bit, and I’m sure Wolfie’s a great player, a fine player, and a good kid. But I’m a fan, and I want to see the original lineup, you know?” YES, I KNOW, BILLY! WE ALL KNOW!

Steve Vai said not too long ago, that he would love the oportunity to regroup w/ Sheehan & Roth one last time. That would be awesome! I loved “Eat em & Smile”! I wasn’t feeling “Sky Scraper” as much, but still, they were a great band. I followed both Roth and Van Hagar after the split and enjoyed both.

Of course, I’m not wishing =VH= to split up again or nothing like that! … I mean, I would hate to miss out on all these great new songs they’ve been realeasing lately!

‘No offense’, but just getting a little tired of hearing about the ex-bandmates new material!

  • Scottso

From Billy’s mouth to Eddie’s ears:

“…to see Mike [Anthony] not there kind of threw me a little bit, and I’m sure Wolfie’s a great player, a fine player, and a good kid. But I’m a fan, and I want to see the original lineup, you know? It was sad to see that Michael wasn’t there.”

  • vanhalendlrband

These are all lies, why didn’t anybody talk about Micheal Anthony when he was ACTUALLY IN THE BAND????

I personally was too into seein Van Halen w/Dave I didn’t care who was playin bass. Seein how MA dissed Dave on the VH III tour i’m not surprised he’s not there, he seemed to be a Dave hater to me.

I bet you Wolfie turns into like a Bass Guitar legend and we’ll never look back.

  • Michael B

Billy is awesome. I’d love to see a short regroup of that original Dave band. Dave never sounded better on his solo stuff (no slight to Jason Becker) then he did with the EEAS band. It’s also the only Vai playing I can enjoy anymore. Everything past Alien Love Secrets sounds indulgent and overproduced/overly thought out. Cool guy, great guitarist, but he sounded best in someone else’s band, in my opinion.

He’s right about Michael A., but it’s not much use crying over spilt milk. For whatever reason Ed and Al weren’t happy with Michael, which is a shame because the more you splinter a band, the less people are going to care about your music. We’ll see what the new stuff sounds like, and my guess is that it will be really, really good. (well, at least I hope.)

  • Dooley

I’d be surprised if Ed cares what Billy has to say.

  • jeff adams

Billy must have been like a kid in a candy store opening for the boys on the Invasion tour. I saw that tour, but missed the opening act. Absolutly no mud-sling’in on Billy’s part. He sounds like a good time guy.

  • Nat

I doubt it would ever fly with Eddie but it would just be so cool to see them bury these old hatchets and get the *whole* band back together. Mikey on bass, a Dave portion of the show and a Sammy portion of the show.

And bring in the EEAS band to open, let Dave do his thing with them. The Chickenfoot guys could be on the ticket as well, let Sam do his thing with them.

I would pay big money to see a show like that.

  • 51504VH

Billy, Steve, Greg, and Dave could have put out so much more great music than they did…it’s sad that they parted ways. I saw both EEAS and Skyscraper and they were both such great shows, all of them were great players very entertaining…not just Dave, which is the case with Van Halen unfortunately.

  • CB

Everything Billy said is true. And if can find that Talas record pick it up it’s great, and it has the original version of Shyboy omiy.

  • Michael C.

It’s obviously not going to happen anytime soon, but, seeing Michael back in the band would just complete all of our dreams. The original lineup from ’78, just going out there and playing the first album front to back, live. I can’t imagine there being many better musical experiences in my life. It’s just a downright shame that it probably won’t happen. And the sad part is, we were so close. To finally get Dave back and on the same page with Ed, only to see Michael get the boot. (just sitting here shaking my head)

  • John

Amen. Billy Sheehan is a class act. He’s right about Mike situation, too. We all like Wolfie and think he’s s great kid and musician , but it’s not the same….VH will always be Ed, Al, Mike and Dave..I can’t wait for the new CD, but the glory years have passed……oh, well, any VH is better than no VH

  • Robert Hainline

I agree with Dooley, Eddie knows that there are fans that miss Mike, but he doesn’t care. It’s a shame too because Mike was so important to the vocals of Van Halen. They will never be the same without him!

  • Scott

It`s sad Mike is not there..But it was sadder seeing Van Halen without David Lee Roth for all those years.I remember Billy once saying Eddie wanted Billy to replace Mike back in the early 80`s. As long as Dave and Eddie are together it`s going to be good.

  • Sean V

    Great read, thanx!
I agree with Dooley, Ed doesn’t care what Billy or anyone else for that matter has to say about anything, he has proven that time after time over the years….

  • http://markwilliamjewelry.com Mark

Good article, at least Mr. Big hit a home run with the new record. I can only hope that VH will be able to re ingnite the chemistry they once had.

Folks should take some notes on new Mr. Big album in that overdubs were minimal, it was largely cut live and kept a great loose feel. It’s fresh and new while yet retaining the classic sound that many of us love…

  • Sparks on the Horizon!!!

@Halenguy51 – The interviewer went to the MSG show.

  • http://vhnd.com VH4

Anyone notice John Shanks tweeted “a day off. Yes!”
Good to know. It`s very stressful, whatever anyone says, that VH are in the studio and we don`t know what they`re up to. I`d be happy with a weekly tweet or something just telling us everything`s still cool…I don`t want to hear the songs yet, or have them doing silly voices or telling jokes, I just want to know everyone is still talking!!!

  • DiamondDean

MR BIGs song UNDERTOW is brilliant , got to give it a listen , bit VAN HALEN crossed with their song TAKE COVER

  • DiamondDean

    dooley sean v

Yes Ed doesnt listen , thats why we got VH3 , mmmmm maybe he shd of listened , well especially to BILLY SHEEHEN who he wanted in the band .

EDWARD cld of always left VH amnd gone n got whoever he wanted to play with .

OF course its a big step down not having MA there ,

  • Matteau23

I don’t get people that hate on Rush. I understand Geddy’s vocals are a bit of an aquired taste, but muscially there are very few bands that can compete with their virtuosity.

Geddy’s a sick bass and keyboard player, Lifeson’s just plain brilliant and Peart requires no defense whatsoever.. He’s possibly the third greatest rock drummer of all time behind Moon and Bonham.

  • J5150C

There are 2 people who can get Mike back: Wolfie if he listens to us fans and cares for what the original line up means to the legacy of the band, and Janie if she listens to Wolfie and convinces Ed to really do it for the fans. And if not, what the fuck! All I wanna really hear is Eddie jamming away!!

    0UT!!

  • Casper

I for one am glad Mike is out. I personally would thank him for getting the ball rolling for starting Planet Us which was his own doing. With out it we wouldn’t have had the 07-08 highest grossing tour and a new album on the way!!

As far as background vocals Mike was 1/3 of a 3 part harmony so if Wolf can sing high it will sound great!!! Look what Sam did with Mona, he was just missing the other 2/3′s along with the brown sound!!!!!

  • ersan5150

What a class act! Makes me wish popular music was dominated by the likes of Mr Sheehan. I am looking forward to seeing him with Mr Big, if ever they swing by Chicago.

  • Ed Dee

Lets face it, without Ed, the rest of the band may have slipped into oblivion. Dave isn’t really a great singer, Alex isn’t as good as a Mike Portnoy or Neil Peart and Michael Anthony is no Billy Sheehan. Together however, they pack a good punch. By the way, I can tell you that at the last tour with Wolfie on bass and background vocals, they had a backing track to help with the harmonies. There is no way a 15-16 year old kid could hit those. Remember your voice at that age ?

  • http://none Growapair.

I had a chance to talk to Billy at length one night at a Mr. Big debut album release party in ’89.Great guy and he treated me like one of his best buds.I e-mailed him years later and he remembered me and asked how I was doing. What a great guy and player.

  • Rack of What?

Hey Billy, you should get the original Michael Schenker Group back together from 1980s Demos.

    Gary Barden
    Michael Schenker
    Billy Sheehan
    Denny Carmassi

  • D A Toluca Lake

The right thing to do would have been for Mike to play bass for the last reunion tour and then part ways.

It would have been a cleaner break.

But maybe Wolfgang gave Eddie the inspiration he needed to get back with Dave.

    Who knows.

  • Kayser Sozay

Somehow I have a feeling that if VH were to invite Mike back into the band, he’d have a two word response.

  • Crazies on my block

I have read many times that Eddie tried to replace Mike with Billy , and Billy said his style just wouldn’t fit the group. As far as Eddie AND Alex wanting to replace Mikey I have never heard anything in print from Alex’s mouth concerning anything negative Michael Anthony, in fact the opposite. The last and only thing I read was Alex saying how much “heart” Mike had for a little guy and what a “good guy” he was. But it is what it is, and I am glad our boys are were they are today, it has been much worse! But deep down I believe they will play again with Mike, it might be a while but it will happen ……someday.

  • Steve K

Van Halen needs to get rid of Wolfie (let him start a band with musicians his own age).Bring back Mike and 99.9% of the fans will buy back into the band.We gotta face the fact Sammy ain’t never going to be on stage with VH not even an apperance on stage.Eddie and Al need to get Mike back let’s face it Wolfie was a novelty.Mikes voice would be very very important with Dave on stage.
