Chickenfoot begins recording new album

That supergroup known as Chickenfoot (from left, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony, Chad Smith and Sammy Hagar) are ready to cut album number two this weekend.

We have a huge, six-part Chickenfoot update today:

Sammy Hagar on recording Chickenfoot’s new album

“It’s time to ‘Zeppelin-ize’ our music!”

Joe Bosso, Wed 26 Jan 2011, 12:05 pm UTC

Chickenfoot begin recording their new album this Friday, but for singer Sammy Hagar, the next 48 hours will feel like an eternity. “I am so ready to make this record,” he says. “I’m beyond ready! The songs we’ve got, the riffs that have been flying around – we’re going deep.”

According to Hagar, “We’ve got stuff planned that we never could have dreamed about when we first got together. We’re talkin’ heavier than ever, bluesier, more emotional – I get goosebumps just thinking about it.”

Chickenfoot (which also includes guitarist Joe Satriani, bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Chad Smith) will track the album at Hagar’s Marin County studio, The Foot Locker, formerly known as Red Rocker. “We did a lot of the first album here,” he says, “and we finished up at Skywalker Studios. This time, I’m pretty sure we’ll be able to do the whole thing here. Five of songs on the first album were all tracked here, and they’re some of my favorites.”

Hagar is particularly fond of the drum sounds the live room in The Foot Locker delivers, and he says that recent upgrades to the recording console will result in “drums that will take your head off. I can’t wait to hear my man Chad in this place now. We’ve fine-tuned everything to an unbelievable degree. Unless I’m totally crazy – and, of course, it’s been said that I am – nobody’s going to say we don’t have enough inputs or the board is lacking this or that. This place is built for speed. We’re gonna stay here till this sucker’s done.”

Which won’t be very long, the singer believes. “The last record took us about three months,” he says, “and I think we’ll knock this one out in half that time. We don’t have these laborious sessions where we go over every phrase and suck all the energy out of the songs. Everybody is so musically capable in this band that we’re able to turn on a dime. We’re almost like a jazz band. Somebody says something, and off we go.”

Whereas Chickenfoot’s gold-certified debut was co-produced with the band by veteran boardsman Andy Johns, this time out Mike Fraser, who mixed that album, will serve as engineer and co-producer with the group. “Andy’s great, but he’s a little hit and miss,” says Hagar. “He kind of wings it. Mike’s a different sort of animal. He’s more of a control guy, but in a good way. Believe me, this band can get out there with the constant flow of ideas, so we need a guy to reign us in.”

Hagar estimates that the band is hitting the studio with four numbers fully written – music and lyrics. Of the 14 or song fragments that Satriani has sent the group over the past few months, the singer says, “I have melody and lyrical ideas to about eight of them. We’ll see what all works and what doesn’t. The music and the songwriting is so spontaneous in this band. I’m sure that once we all get in the room together, other songs will happen and some will fall by the wayside.”

Although Chickenfoot have spent much of 2010 apart (Satriani just wrapped a tour for his most recent solo album, Black Swans And Wormhole Wizards, while Smith has been finishing the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ long-awaited next record), Hagar has no reason to doubt that once the four musicians reconvene, sparks will fly. “All I have to do is tell Joe I’m thinking of doing something kind of like Whole Lotta Love, and he’ll play me a riff that has that spirit. Then I’ll start singing, Chad and Mike will tear into it, and before you know it, we’ve got a song.”

When asked how the new record might differ from its predecessor, Hagar points to a song called Come Closer, which he says is the first time Satriani composed music to the singer’s existing lyrics. “Usually, I write words to the musc; this time we did it in reverse, and it’s amazing.” Hagar also mentions two acoustic numbers that Satriani has been working on. “These things are stone-cold blues,” he says. “I’m listening to my Robert Johnson anthologies to get in the proper spirit. What I want to do is get real authentic with the blues like Zeppelin did. I want to take the blues and really rock it out. It’s time to ‘Zeppelin-ize’ our music.”

On the subject of a release date, Hagar says it’s “a little early to predict that. But I do want to hit the road later this year.” One possible kink touring-wise centers around Smith, who will most likely be performing with the Chili Peppers when they release their album in the summer. “It’s a conflict,” Hagar admits. “But what can you do? Chad is going to make an incredible record with us. If he can’t tour we us, we’ll have to get a temporary replacement.” He names Jason Bonham, Matt Sorum, Vinnie Paul and Abe Laboriel Jr as possible candidates. “Any one of them would be amazing. But like I said, they’d be temporary – I can’t stress that enough. Chad Smith is a member of Chickenfoot, and that’s that.”

2) MICHAEL ANTHONY at NAMM (Video) – Jan. 20, 2011

Rich’s Music Exchange conducted an interview with CHICKENFOOT/ex-VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony at this past weekend’s NAMM international music industry trade show in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat below.

3) SAMMY HAGAR Joins JOE SATRIANI On Stage In Oakland:

Sammy Hagar joined his CHICKENFOOT bandmate Joe Satriani on stage last night (Thursday, January 13) during Satriani’s headlining concert at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, California to perform two songs — “Foxy Lady” and “Going Down”. Video footage of Hagar’s appearance can be viewed below (courtesy of Eliseo Soto).

4) Joe Satriani interview with Examiner.com:

Q: How far along is Chickenfoot with the second album, and how much of this year will revolve around touring behind that?

A: We’ve got 18 songs in the process of being written. We’re going to meet at the end of this month to record this record. We don’t know how we’re going to finish it or when it’s going to be released. We’re dealing with my touring and Chad Smith’s involvement with the new Chili Peppers record and Sam’s many responsibilities. I’m confident of having a record in the can by March.

Q: Having been used to your own band over the years, what was the biggest adjustment you had to make working with Sammy, Michael and Chad?

A: Having a private jet to fly around (laughs). No one in the band had taken a tour bus except for me. Believe it or not, that was the biggest adjustment — getting used to flying in a private jet.

Q: Before Chickenfoot came to San Antonio in Sept. 2009, Michael Anthony told me that you like to take notes in the studio. What kinds of details are you taking note of?

A: When you’re in the studio, it’s a beautiful opportunity to achieve greatness. Everyone wants to make a record that is great for decades and decades. You don’t want to slack off. You want to rise to the occasion. It’s a special atmosphere, and I don’t want to miss out on it. After the recording session, those guys flew home, Sam worked on some lyrics, and it was just me and the engineer. I played banjo, acoustic guitar, other instruments. I love it. Some people find (record-making) tedious. I think it’s a privilege to be in that situation.

5) Joe Satriani interview with NewsReview.com:

Q: What’s going on with Chickenfoot?

A: Chickenfoot will be in the studio by the end of this month. We’ve got a whole slew of songs we’re working on, and the original lineup will come on, and we’ll see if we can get a record finished up by the beginning of March.

Q: When you go from doing your solo stuff to Chickenfoot, how does your perspective change? What are the advantages and disadvantages of working with a vocalist?

A: Well, you know, those guys are rock stars, so the food is much better when I’m with Chickenfoot. They’re part of that multi-platinum, rock ‘n’ roll hall of fame group of musicians, so there are private jets and celebrity chefs showing up all the time. It’s a little bit more down home when I’m doing my solo work.

Q: The new record [Satchriani's solo album] is more of a thoughtful record, where Chickenfoot is a party record. Would you agree with that?

A: Without a doubt. There are certain things that a vocal band can do–and since both [bands] are playing rock music–that instrumental bands can pull off. I have the benefit of not having lyrics, so the music is a lot more suggestive because of the absence of direction from lyrics. The burden of having lyrics is that you’ve got to come up with really great ones [laughs]. They really put a face on a band.

Sammy is a feel-good guy. He hates conflict. He loves to lift people up. It’s like if there are two people in a room, he’ll make sure they’re having a party. And when he goes to a concert to play, that’s exactly the way he feels. That’s the sensibility he likes to bring when we’re writing it together. Even when he wants to make a comment about a serious subject, he makes sure there’s a way to do it where he can get people on their feet. It’s a very interesting way that he likes to do that.

6) Chad Smith and Michael Anthony with the Sabian Holy China

Chad Smith (of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Chickenfoot) surprises Michael Anthony (of Van Halen and Chickenfoot fame) with his ultra loud new cymbal. The SABIAN Holy China was inspired by Chad and is the loudest China cymbal SABIAN has ever made.

I really dig Chad’s kit, both the Henk Schiffmacher artwork and the sound kick ass!!

    Frank, NL

  • Karl

If VH can get their record out as well this is going to be the best year for music in quite some time. Really looking forward to this. Hope both bands can pull one out of the hat. This summer will have a great soundtrack. It will make an old man feel young again.

  • womenandchildrenlast

    Tony-
“Let the master of PR statements, the Diamond one come in front of MTV and spill the beans already.”

No one who watches the reality show network aka MTV, would have any idea who Diamond Dave is…lol.

  • Les

Unless Best Buy backs CFII for 8 bucks, it will not go gold. And Hagar needs to stop with the Zeppelinizing shit.

  • john

I concur with Scar. This is going to be awesome. Anyone who doen’t roll with this and enjoy the opportunity to have new Chickenfoot and VH in the same year, needs their head examined. I can’t wait.

  • vanhalendlrband

Alright. Love Joe Satriani, so this will be sweet. Kind of like those RPG’s that would come out to get you pumped for the next Final Fantasy later in the year from the same company. Lol.

  • Casper

I’m SAD that Chad no longer looks like Will Farrell but now looks like Jim Carey’s Fire Marshall Bill in that top photo!! Both album’s will be well received!!!

  • http://www.vhnd.com LookmanI’llpayya4itWTF

For this summer the Foot should open up for the HALEN. BTW, WTF is up w/ Mikey’s elbow???????

  • Van Foot

    This is great…

Chickenfoot will record, produce, and release before Van Halen. Obviously, Sam and Mike are giving the finger to the VH brothers. This will be an interesting year for both bands. The comparisons should shape up nicely between the bands. CF going deeper into heavy tones and tunes, VH going the route of pop and circumstance.

I think it’s great they’ll settle this once and for all in the studio. The first CF album was much better, commercially and musically, than many had predicted.

  • Rossiter

No more battles. That stuff is ancient history. I am excited for 2 new albums.

  • Tommy Boy

I know many of you will concur… It’s gonna be a great day when we load this site on our computers and the headline reads somethin’ like this….” Van Halen in the studio with David Lee Roth” photos, videos maybe even a snippet of a new tune. Bustanut time…

  • Matt

I am pumped for Chickenfoot. However, I hate how Sammy made a minor dig at Andy Johns. Andy is rock! I am sure Mike Fraser is amazing. I just wish Sammy would have stayed focused on the positive.

  • Deja Vu

Funny how some still believe that Sammy gives a shit about what Eddie Al and Wolfy are doing. The album would have been done but Sammy was waitin for Chad and Smoke to finish their projects. The VH album was supposed to be released after the 07-08 tour. Three years later and still waitin. I am more interested in hearin how the Peppers sound with new guitarist Klinghoffer, since Frusciante left the band. You can count on the chickenfoot and RHCP albums and tours in 2011, but dont hold your breath for Eddie to get it together.

  • Sparks on the Horizon!!!

Van Foot just drop the Van from your name already. You truly advocate negativity towards VH with every single post. Settle what in the studio?! This isn’t 1985 anymore. We’re not waiting to see if Eat’em & Smile out rocks 5150 like junior high schoolers. There is no fucking competition. God, I hope no one from either camp reads any of these posts. Down right childish.

  • http://VHND HIKER MAN

CANT WAIT, WERE GONNA GET MUSIC THAT WE HAVE BEEN WAITING A LONG TIME TO GET, IT WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT, ALL WE NOW IS FOR GARY TO PUT SOMETHING OUT THIS YEAR TOO.

  • DiamondDean

    ITTTTTTSSSS ON!

  • godised

Let the race begin!!! we are all waiting and waiting for Eddie to pull his finger out and give the fans a new VH album. How long has it been since a studio album for VH? Come on guys beat the foot…. and sammy has released how many albums/toured/new DVD’s in the same time? We all sit and wait.
P.S VH come back to Australia and see us again.. this time with the REAL VH lead singer

  • http://vhnd.com VH4

@Sparks, good work. If Van Foot would listen objectively, he would realise that CF`s album really didn`t sound like Van Halen (by which I mean DLR era) and that there is no comparison or competition here. I`ll buy Chickenfoot`s album, but will be hoping for better this time, especially as I`m a big fan of Joe (and I can be that without having to compare to Ed), Mike, and Sammy`s voice (just not his words). I`m allowed to love Dave (best showman, frontman, lyric-writer and personality) and Eddie (just the greatest, full-stop) without it meaning I hate Joe and Sam or MA, which I certainly don`t. I just didn`t think CF`s album was that special, considering the talent that went into it.

  • Rack of What?

Sparkless, I was in junior COLLEGE when those albums hit the airwaves, and it was one helluva debate back then. Personally, I feel Eat em and Smile blows the doors off 5150 (and I’m a HUGE Hagar fan).

But, I agree, these ‘comparisons’ are ridiculous. Why do some people compare EVERYTHING to Halen? And, only the Roth era? Is it protective reflex because the brand has been fading for years? If comparisons are in order, let’s do the rational thing and compare the albums to what’s out there RIGHT NOW (pardon the pun).

  • snuffles

I wonder if Mike and Eddy ran into each other at NAMM?

  • Grindstonem

I wonder as well… I think they secretly keep in touch…

  • Foot

    Sparks,

Easy man. If anybody in this forum doesn’t think for a minute that Sam and Mike want to upstage their old band with a great CF album is in denial. The issue at hand is, who thought Van Halen would actually make it back to the studio? The comparisons are out there, and they will continue to be out there regardless of your wishes. Kinda like the RHCP with Frusciante (great stuff), and the RHCP with other guitar players (blows in my opinion). Frusciante is RHCP. Seems like they may be struggling without Frusciante, who is a great song writer.

Satch is a much better player than EVH today. Satch has stood the test of time and remained creative and innovative with the guitar. Eddie has put out some porn music and a few new tunes with Sammy and Dave. Up for Breakfast sounded like Fire in the Hole, etc. I did like Me Wise Magic, although I thought Dave’s voice was pretty lame; when he starts holding his nuts to find Sammy’s range.

Michael has better pipes and is a better bass player than Wolfie. Sorry man. In due time, Wolfie will come into his own…hopefully not as a bass player for Van Halen.

Sammy has much better range and tone than Dave.

Chad and Al—–too close too call. Both are highly regarded and extremely talented with all things skin.

I’ve been disappointed in VH for years, and I’m a big fan. I’d like to see them make a comeback and a great record. Maybe this time Eddie won’t sing or play piano, especially on one of the tracks.

How can Chickenfoot not sound like Van Halen with Mike and Sam singing? Mike and Sam are Van Halen, in an other half sense of the music. They are very much Van Halen and have their signature all over music from 5150 on.

How can you not make comparisons? Do you watch the NFL? Do you consider trades and talent moving around to other teams to win a championship? Do you not stack offenses and defenses against each other to see who will win?

I hope both bands make great records, but unfortunately, the talent goes to CF. Keeping Mike out of Van Halen gives VH disadvantages with vocals and rhythm.

Am I not allowed to voice my opinion of how dopey Eddie has been with regard to the band and his decisions? Am I supposed to approve of his antics and shunning of one of my favorite (former) band members. Or how he turned his back on his new found brother Gary?

    C’mon man…

  • DiamondDean

    All good points FOOT

Thats right , not everyone has a pro VH opinion and yes they shd be heard not censored , thats the whole point of a forum

  • http://VHND HIKER MAN

2011 gonna be a great year, Thank’s Van Halen, and Chickenfoot, maybe you guy’s could tour together, that would be the best tour ever

  • D.O.A.

Interesting read, Foot. Thanks for the well written (and thought out) post.

My question: is it really “upstaging” VH to have a great second album IF they do?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m pro CF and pro VH. I just hope that with whatever happens, there will be a couple of excellent cd’s. I just don’t know that (despite the fact I’m a Hagar fan) I could see anything CF does as upstaging. I mean, we’re talking about a Mt. Rushmore type of band in VH.

To me, I think there would definitely have to be a certain amount of satisfaction (ok…a TON of satisfaction) if they’re able to top the debut. But to feel they “upstaged” VH?

While I think there has to be a certain amount of bravado in these guys, I’m not so sure that even they would go that far. I think maybe that mostly I kinda hope they don’t think that way, and there’s a least a little humility going on.

  • Chris

I am very happy that VH and CF are recording new CDs. Let’s hope the music sellers can give us one version with ALL of the songs on the disc the first time around, rather than fucking us over and forcing us to buy extra songs on a separate release.

  • Sparks on the Horizon!!!

Van Foot (I stuck the Van back in for ya) by all means, voice your opinions. Nothings about to hold me back from sharing mine, but I stand firmly by what I said. There is no competition and creating music is not a head to head sport with helmuts and shoulder m’pads. I’ll join in quickly with the whole years of let downs and disappointment angle, but whether their (VHs) crappy official website shits or gets off the pot matters not to me at this time. During better times, they were always good at keeping things under wraps. They are clearly pushing forward with new music. Now hardly seems the time to sling mud. As I mentioned a month or so back, this post is full of people Monday morning quarterbacking games that haven’t been played yet!!

Opinion time, I love Mike but here’s where his over ratedness comes in to play. As a big fan of the club days, I’ve often wondered where his phenomenal bass chops went after WACF. Poof! They were gone and didn’t reappear until Chicken Foot and even that recording was just him sitting in the pocket. Great back up vox? Sure. Always.
To me, Joe’s perfectionist ways and solos with “too many notes” (Amadeus) make him boooriiiing. The riff to Aveneda Rev. is mean as hell, the first 30 seconds. Then that’s all you get! The notes to that solo are nothing but a batch of random notes play emotionlessly fast. He’s always packing 10 pounds of shit in a 1 pound bag.
Sammy. Great voice. Painfully aweful lyrics 93% of the time. I’m not going to sight an examples as I have to get some sleep tonight.
    Chad. A decent drummer.
Fine. You’ve got a half way decent band there. I bought their debut (once. That double dip shit for 1 extra “Zeppelinized” tune didn’t lure me to spend again) but, remind me again, why is there a point in comparing a “can’t fail to atleast generate a buzz” super group to the most genuine of articles in the world of hard rock? The band with the unmistakable raw talent, power, wit and youthful exuberance (and I don’t just mean the new kid) will be leagues apart. Yeah, it’s been an obnoxiously long wait, but it’s coming. Just my opinion.

Ed at the 1991 MTV awards upon hearing of their nominations “ah who cares about awards? There’s plenty of room at the top for everybody.”

Dave from “Slam Dunk” – “winners, they come and go. Legends live forever”

Quoting them was all I really needed to do, come to think of it.

  • DiamondDean

CLD/ chickenfoot outsell VAN HALEN???? possible????

  • Sparks on the Horizon!!!

A couple more things. (my eyes were closing as I wrote last night)

I’m fairly certain Ed’s new found brother, Gary, left on his own. If anyone can sight an interview that claims the contrary, I’d love to read it.

While I don’t agree with the manner in which EVH has handled some things in the past, when Mike says, “me and Sam were just waving the VH flag while the band was on a break” Uhhh, I don’t think so. Calling yourself “the Other Half” sends out a signal of separation with just a hint of rebellion. Whether VH wasted years or not, I agree with Ed taking issue with that move.

I also found it to be a bit of an intentional F-you when Sammy put Dreams on a live cd with both Mike AND Gary on it. Come on, you know Sammy had the guy flown in for that dick move.

I read a good point in a drum mag. Interview with Alex that the context of a new record is where people will most see and respect Wolfs capabilities. I wasn’t thrilled to see a 16 year old replace a veteran in his early 50′s but holy shit, what’s done is done, and all parties included are happy with their current roles they are playing.

Dave trying to hit highs falls just as flat as Sammy trying to go low, I’ll agree, however, Daves words and delivery are ions closer to something I can live vicariously through than “she’s got back in the front.”. I think I threw up in my mouth a little when I heard that dumb line get squeaked out.

Many more points to be made but now I’m late for work. All of this nonsense is too fun to partake in.

  • Tater Salad

For Chickenfoot to upstage Van Halen they would need ten awesome and fairly awesome albums selling to platinum(I think? Correct me if I’m wrong here). And they would need to withstand the test of time(basically all of the van halen albums, excluding a few, are still loved by fans and many songs are still loved in general). I love Chickenfoot, but they aren’t Van Halen. Those of you knocking Wolfie, you are either
    a. Jealous because he’s young and youre not.
    b. Jealous because he’s in Van Halen and your not.
    c. Jealous because he’s a talented musician and you’re not.
    d. All of the above

  • BamaSammyFan

I can’t wait to hear the Foot’s new album. I went to their Atlanta show in August 2009 and those dudes can rock it out like 20-year olds. In the meantime, I’m going to see Sammy and his band, the Wabos, on April 30th in Biloxi at the IP Hotel/Casino. 2011 is off to a rockin’ good start!

  • Let’s Rock

And I thought 2011 was going to suck….WRONG!!

Van Halen and Chickenfoot, enough said.

Not knocking Wolfie, some of us would prefer Mikey (and why not!!)

Play Bass: Mikey can, Wolfie can

Play Guitar: Mikey can, Wolfie can

Play Drums: Mikey can, Wolfie can

    Sing: Mikey can, Wolfie cannot

But the real kicker, Be on the next Van Halen offering: Mikey cannot, Wolfie can!!

I had your back until you started rambling AGAINST Hagar/Anthony/Satriani

So, by that previous quote, it’s not okay for Sammy to do any Van Roth, AND Van HAGAR?? He wrote Dreams. Performed Dreams, and has every right to redo Dreams if he wants.

PS: The version of Dreams on Cosmic Universal Fashion was from his Bday Bash in ’08, which I was at……

Van Foot bashes Van Halen, you bash Chickenfoot. What’s the difference, again???

  • Herb

Not picking at you Sparks, but I had the best laugh when I read the lyrics you put down to Sexy Little Thing…it reminded me a of a really funny bit I saw on SNL years ago: “Beatles Songs You Know Some of the Words To.”

I tried to find it on youtube, but came up empty to this point. If someone tries and finds it, post the address please!

  • Sparks on the Horizon!!!

Sure Sammy can do Dreams. I thought it was a silly move getting Gary in on the live version with him. Really, what reason could there possibly have been in pulling the guy up on stage that Sammy didn’t know? Thought it was odd. That’s all.

As for the “bashing” my dear boy, I was merely giving my opinion. I even stated in that same post that Van Foot sure as hell can post his own. Amazing still how blurred lines get around here. I like Chicken Foot. I actually put it on the same plateau as VHIII. I have likes and dislikes about all parties included. I purposely threw my two cents in to combat all of the Wolf will never be Mike shenanigans. Did I go to far? You only think so because you eventually disagreed with me. Does it really matter what any of us throw out there? Hell no. So Im not a fan of Sams words and Satches fastidious approach to song crafting. I still gave them some of my money.

One last thing on the shoes Wolf is filling. Bobby Murcer never wanted to be the next Mickey Mantle. He just wanted to be Bobby Murcer. The kid is coming into his own at a pace we could never comprehend and if his back up vocals don’t sound like Mikes, only a fool would hold that against him.

Hey everyone, don’t get yer noses outta joint!

  • snoova

    Sparkless,

I read an interview with Gary a while back and I believe he basically said that the record company told Eddie to get rid of him because record sales of a second album were not likely to be better than the first (III). As I understood it, Gary and Eddie saw their point and parted ways on good terms.

As far as the 2 shows he played with Hagar on the Sam and Dave tour… Yes, both Sammy AND Dave were trying to give the VH brothers a slap in the face. Both Sam and Dave did interviews that revealed that. Sam did invite Gary to join him onstage in Boston when they were there. But he invited Dave to join him onstage the first night and several after. Sammy himself said he became a “running joke” because Dave would not join him. Gary said in interviews of how Sam was a cool guy and mentioned he wasn’t going to pass on the opportunity to play an arena again. Any interview I have read with Gary discussing VH he has always said how great all the guys were.

I don’t think Gary has anything against VH.

Sparks – I see you’re not a CF fan, which is just fine. But I want to respectfully address a couple of your points above.

First, if you’re going to slam Sam’s lyrics which, you should quote them correctly so we know your reaction is based on reality. He didn’t sing “she’s got back in the front.” The line is “She’s got back and up front is everything any country boy needs.” Maybe you wouldn’t have thrown up in your mouth quite as much. Or maybe you would have thrown up even more. Either way, just wanted you to have the facts.

Also, I disagree that Mike’s playing with CF is strictly in the pocket. Check out the live DVD concert of CF. Mike really shines. I have no idea why VH downplayed him so much in the mix.

Re: Joe’s playing. I get what you’re saying about Joe trying to pack too much into his playing. Normally I agree with you because that’s often his style. But I think he’s pretty restrained on the first CF album compared to his solo work. My favorite piece of his guitar work on the CF album is the ride out at the end of Soap on a Rope. Chad’s drums help it but that’s just a killer two minutes of music.

Re: Cherone – I don’t have a citation for you but I remember reading that despite “official accounts” that the split with VH was mutual, Ed once said in an interview something to the effect that his “hands were tied” by the record company who were upset over VH III being such a bust. I also remember an interview Gary gave (not too long ago I think) where he talked about he regretted that he couldn’t stay for one more album because he felt like they were really starting to come together after their world tour. I think it was a situation where Gary didn’t want to go but understood he had to go. But he certainly didn’t “leave on his own” as you say.

I will agree with you that Sam’s choice to put Gary on the Hallelujah Live album is curious. I think it was more subtle than you – i.e. I don’t think Gary was flown in – in fact, I think I recall the liner notes saying it was recorded in Boston so Gary was likely just invited to come down and jam a little VH or just happened to be there and was invited up on stage. But I do think including that track (“When it’s Love” I think) was a slight poke at the VH brothers as in, “Mike’s my best friend. Dave and I toured together. Gary and I are now buddies. Everyone else seems to get along so you guys must be the assholes” type thing.

Do agree with you that the lack of information about the new VH album from the website or elsewhere is meaningless. I think Dave and Ed are smart enought to know from history how volatile their relationship is. It wouldn’t make sense to put out a lot of press about the status of the new album if the whole thing could fall apart (again) with just a sideways look from one of them. I think it’s remarkable that the new producer tweeted about the new album. He must have had the band’s blessing to do that or I’m sure he’d be the new ex-producer.

  • Towers McQuestion

Good news! Van Halen, why can’t you do a simple thing like this?

  • Sparks on the Horizon!!!

@ Kayser Sozay. A thousand pardons for butchering that masterfully written line. That was truly, as they say, m’ bad. Perhaps I could have poked at the aweful timing of transitioning from the first songs “this is where they found the baby!” right into the second song about having all the money, fast cars and pussy and it just ain’t enough theme (I dodged pulling off a direct quote as I didn’t want to offend anyone).

Anyway, my last post probably came up the same time as your last post. Please read my follow up and understand, I do like CF. There’s just a few things I’m critical about. I know what Mike “can” do. Just don’t know why it has been absent since 1980. It’s hard to believe that he was asked to tone down any flair considering how close VH supposedly came to bringing in Billy Sheehan way back then. I followed Joe from Not of this Earth (with the original cd cover) to the Time Machine double cd. I’m sure he did ok after that but, song after song of displaying your entire technique portfolio wears on some people faster than others. Vai’s tremendous and stail, too, IN MY OPINION. Thanks for agreeing with atleast half of my b.s. and you articulated much better than me the whole Gary Live Hallelujah thing.

Until the ghost of Andy Gibb accuses Satch of lifting his riff to “I just wanna be your everything” and sticking it in “Turnin’ Left”, peace out.

P.S. My post at the very top of thus thread alludes to how psyched I am for both bands. Funny how so much poop got turned on me. That’s ok. Your still all on my Christmas card list.

  • Les

There is noo chance that CF will upstage VH. Not going to happen, and the fanboys that keep thinking that need to lay off the drugs.

  • Foot

I’m not a Halen basher. Some of you have it wrong.

Going back to the NFL comparison…I enjoy supporting and rooting for winning teams. In my opinion, Van Halen hasn’t conducted themselves as a “winning” band for years. Hard to support a band that misleads it’s fans, treats its own members terribly, and has run ins with 3 of their previous singers. Lest we forget, Ed began to bash Michael in the press by elevating his son to some great improvement at the bass position in Van Halen. Michael has been humble, perplexed, and thankful for all things Van Halen over the years. The fact the guy had to sign over his rights to the band to tour in 2004 is very, very sketchy. Ed is an asshole. Not by my judgements or opinions, but by the way he treated Mike. Removing his image, discounting his contributions to the band. I’m sorry, that has “dick” written all over it. Awards shows are not for the band, they are for the fans. Eddie doesn’t see anything wrong with skipping out on the RRHOF, I think it’s a slight to the fans of VH and other band members.

Regardless, I think Van Halen brought so much to rock-n-roll back in the 70′s, 80′s, and 90′s. Seeing VH at the Texas Jam years ago is such a fond memory. The band was always my “go to” for good times, fun loving, take your whiskey home music. Then came the drama. The drama with Dave, the drama with Sammy, the drama with Gary, the ousting of Mike, the divorce with Valerie, etc. My fun loving rock-in-roll band, with guitar God in tow, became an embittered, angry bunch of individuals. It appeared, that people became much happier after leaving the studios of 5150.

As mentioned before, I saw the band in Denver in 2004. Largely, the reunion was lifeless and Eddie sucked on the guitar…believe it or not (I couldn’t believe what I was seeing). I don’t know if he was drunk, his thumb was hurting, or he had an off night (can we quit making excuses for Ed already!). I paid $100 a ticket, took my kids, and they thought Bon Jovi and the Goo Dolls were much better performers and sounded better live. I was disappointed. I’d seen the band with great shows on 1984, 5150, FUCK, and Balance (Denver again in the snow) and couldn’t believe my kids thought Bon Jovi and the Goo Goo Dolls were better bands. In all honesty, based on the performance, they were better bands.

I want Van Halen to do well. I want a great record that I can feel good about, which might remind me of why I fell in love with the band anyway.

Does the band owe me anything? Absolutely not…

Has Van Halen been marginalized by their own doing over the past decade. Absolutely. I find most of it embarrassing.

I still play my Wolfgang, I still cover VH in my own band, but, like many things with this band, it’s not the same based on how much anger emanated from the Van Halen camp, largely driven by Mr. Van Halen himself.

I hope that Wolfie goes off and does his own thing. He is merely a book end with Van Halen right now.

  • Matteau23

Is it just me, or is it really refreshing that Satriani answers the questions in an interview honestly and succintly with no self promotion or BS? The guy genuinely seems honored to be a musician and makes the absolute most of his talents.

I like Sammmy, I really do, but sometimes he is his own worth enemy with his mouth. He makes it so hard to like anything he does with his constant self promotion and BS.

I’m willing to bet 99% of the people on this site (particularly the Roth contingent) would like and respect Chickenfoot a whole lot more if it was just a Mikey project with Joe, Chad and another random singer.

  • FAMAC

Is Chad using sign language to tell us something?

  • Panama Red

@ John – my guess is, you are a downer

@ Sparks on the Horizon – You perplex me…sometimes I agree with your comments and then sometimes I think you are taking too much ambian. I want to address some of your comments with my own thoughts and opinions. First of all, I don’t understand your comments of Mike being overrated as a bass player. I’m totally confused at those remarks. You insinuated, that there’s proof of Mike being overrated because of Mike’s bass chops disappearing after WACF!? WTF? If there is a lack of Mikey’s bass on some of the albums it’s due to bad mixing/production by the engineer and/or producer. What are you saying? Mikey forgot how to play good bass guitar or gave up trying for a while??! And then he remembered how to play well again with Chickenfoot?!
    haha

Of course The Other Half “sends out a signal of separation” it’s in the name dude – “the other half.” Geez! I guess they should of called themselves “Two guys who used to be in Van Halen, but we aren’t the guys who have the last name Van Halen and we certainly don’t mean this as a jab at those wonderful guys…okay?”
And as far as the hint of rebellion in the name…I guess, maybe…not really though.
What would they be rebelling against? Not sitting on their asses and never playing Van Halen songs again.
If that’s the case, then good for them! I personally like rebellion, I prefer lots of it. A dose of rebellion goes good with just about everything in life IMO, especially rock and roll and the attitudes that go with it.
To me, Mike and Sam were just having fun with it, not taking themselves too seriously. They wanted to go out on the road and entertain fans. They didn’t start that band with the intentions of recording new music. They weren’t trying to win a grammy or make giant waves in the music community or anything. They wanted to have a party with the fans while playing Van Halen songs, especially since there was an absence of VH at the time. It’s like the supply and demand thing. There was a lot of demand for VH but the Van Halen brothers weren’t supplying it, so Sammy and Mike “waived the VH flag” so to speak and tried keeping the spirit alive for the fans while having a blast themselves doing what they love to do.
They went, people came, fun was had, that’s about it. They were just trying to have fun and keep the music alive.
Inserting connotations that it was something negative is absurd to me. Sammy Hagar is just about as positive as humanly possible and Mike is about as laid back as they come. If you want to try to find some negativity you might want to take a closer look at the Other-other half. It seems like a Negative attitude breeds cynicism and makes you withdrawn but a Positive attitude stimulates you with creativity and Life.
Which of those descriptions sounds like they would best fit Sam or Mike and which ones sound more like EVH?

There are a few people who come to VHND that sometimes try to grasp at strings to be able to say something negative about Sammy, Mike, Chickenfoot, etc. It really gets redundant and ridiculous at times. The bottom line is, Mike and Sammy are really easy going guys that want to make music and play music for their fans. Mike was tired of waiting around since the late 90′s to play. So he called Sammy (who he hadn’t talked to in a long time) and Sammy invited Mike to go on the road with him and play a few shows here and there. It eventually evolved into “The Other Half” which some VH and Sammy fans were fortunate enough to see and have fun hearing some Van Halen songs that we had all been aching to hear again for so long. It would’ve been awesome to hear songs from Ed and Al but there wasn’t a choice, was there?
Mike and Sammy toured as “The Other Half” mainly for the fans and because they are musicians who love to play music. That’s what it was about, and anybody who tries to inject any negative connotations into that equation (like it was just to give a middle finger at the VH bros.) is waiving their own flag for the rest of us to see. And what that flag signifies is pretty clear to me.

Regarding your other statements: As far as I know, when VH3 did not live up to the expectations of record execs, Ray Daniels, Ed/AL, they made a decision to try and get DLR back. At least that’s what Gary Cherone hinted at in an interview.

As far as Sammy singing “Dreams” or including it on a solo album, he has a right as the co-songwriter to play that song whenever and wherever he wants. It’s so ridiculous…this attitude that some people have had here of “Sammy rips off VH, by playing Their songs” or “Sammy rides on the coat tails of VH.” Are you frigging kidding me!
He was a part of making those songs, and FANS WANT TO HEAR THEM!!!!!
People love hearing Van Halen songs, whether it’s Sammy singing them, Dave singing them, Mike singing them, etc.
Sammy talked about why he included that Live version of Dreams on the “Cosmic Universal Fashion” album. It wasn’t planned, he said the recording wasn’t meant to go on an album and he jokingly said he thought it had the worst production quality of a song to ever be put on an album. But the reason he put it on there was because the energy was so amazing from the crowd, he felt it was a special moment of time between him and the audience so he felt compelled to put it on his CD.

Sparks on the Horizon – as far as you saying “I thought it was a silly move getting Gary in on the live version with him. Really, what reason could there possibly have been in pulling the guy up on stage that Sammy didn’t know? Thought it was odd. That’s all.”

Sammy DID know Gary. Gary called Sammy up wanting to open for Sam and Dave during the “Sans Halen” tour. Sammy is the type of guy that if you meet him once you’re a friend. He would probably pull just about anybody on stage to jam with him if he thought at least one person in the audience would get a kick out of it. Musicians like jamming with other musicians, that’s how it goes. It’s too bad Dave doesn’t have that same mentality because seeing Sammy and Dave on stage together would have been crazy and probably pretty freaking amazing, the fans would have erupted into a frenzy. That’s why Sammy wanted to do it, but Dave…I guess he couldn’t bear the thought of sharing the spotlight with Sammy.

One last thing, I think it should be a rule here at VHND that anyone who repeatedly bashes Sammy’s lyrics or Dave’s lyrics on a consistent basis should have to post original song lyrics (or a poem) that they wrote. I’ve mentioned here once or twice in the past, the lyrical content of “Up For Breakfast” and how I’ve never disliked a Van Halen’s song lyrics up until I heard that song, but c’mon this constant ripping of Sammy’s lyrics gets old on a Van Halen fansite, because essentially, you’re really barking up the wrong tree.
It may be easy for some people to scrutinize and be critical of others but it’s not so easy to put yourself out there for others to scrutinize is it?
I challenge anyone with the balls to post a different and complete set of your own original song lyrics every time you feel it necessary to point out someone else’s “bad” lyrics. That’s not so easy to do, is it?
Sammy has written 200 + songs. Let me know when you get close to that number without writing one that isn’t pure gold.

Hey Kayser – Would Sammy really be off base if he actually did say “Everyone else seems to get along so you guys must be the assholes”
I mean c’mon think about it. Everyone else (Sammy, DLR, Cherone) has gone out and made more music except EVH and Alex.
It’s a damn, almost intolerable shame that two guys with such unbelievable talent let so many years slip away from doing what I thought they Loved to do.

@Matteau23, I`m sure you`re right about DLR/VH fans liking CF more if they had a different singer. I, for one, would, for the obvious reason – they would have better lyrics. When Sammy sang “When I turned 30, it was time to settle down” I laughed hard, I`m surprised he can remember that birthday! That`s why I hope Dave and Ed are not trying to act like they are making their debut again – show some class, show you`ve evolved. It can still kick ass!

  • Sparks on the Horizon!!!

Van Foot- I’m reading you very much clearer. Good points about Ed’s genuine “dick moves”. I disagreed more with your “this guy out performs that guy” comments earlier, but again, all opinions should be left as that.
A true bummer about your ’04 tour experience. I saw the 2nd or 3rd night of that tour from front and center and Ed was the best I had seen him since ’86. In hindsight, there was an odd distance between him and Mike.
All of this back and forth that’s been goin’ on has brought me to read the last 100 pages or so of “Everybody Wants Some – the VH Saga”. It is so very well written. Here is a quote that I think sums up some of the whackness quite eloquently:

“In the end, everyone in Van Halen has taken a turn as villain. All of the band members have bent the truth for convenience and used the media to stall fans, mask their true intentions, forward their own plans and polish one side of a controversy. The truth is more muddled by emotion, personal politics, and the haze of altered states that anyone can admit without upsetting whatever tender relationships remain, if any. The only shining side of the coin is that all players involved have a decent track record for coming clean after enough time passes.”

Some more guilty than others but a good point about the humanity of the pack none the less.

  • Herb

Man, this has had some really, really great response.

Kudos to Red, Foot, Sparks, Kayser etc. It is so totally freakin’ cool to read something (with thought behind it) that you guys are passionate about.

It would be stellar if others (ie Les, VH4) would take a lesson.

Put some thought in to it. And for crying out loud, look back at what you are about to post before hitting send.

  • Sparks on the Horizon!!!

    @Panama Red

    1. Scroll up to the very top of this thread and read the second post. It’s happy, it’s positive, it’s geared towards both CDs being recorded this year and it’s written by me.
    2. In between there and here is the blurred line between opinion and bashing. If somewhere along the line I poke at Sammy corny lyrics or what ever, I’m not being bitter. I’m just voicing an opinion and that, for some reason is ok to call me out on as being a basher or a hater. It’s ok for other people to say Wolf can never be as good as Mike or RHCP will never be good without Fruisante!? Those were opinions too, no? Really, I’m totally content with this being my last post if no one in the room has a thick skin and feels they need to make themselves unpaid blog-watch lawyers for our millionaire rock icons.
    3. I love Mike. Sorry if the word overrated offended you. Read my last post. It is my OPINION that he played an absolutely viscious bass from ’74 to ’80. I never said he’s sucked since then. I really don’t know where the heavy picking attack and scalular runs and walking bass lines went! It’s not a dig, but an observation. After hearing Ed play bass on Sam’s “I Never Said Goodbye” cd, I am convinced he played on Girl Gone Bad and possibly other songs. A lot going on in my query that won’t be cleared up ’til Mike writes a book. I hope he does!
    4. Kayser helped me out a bit with my Gary on Sams live album point. Just thought it came off as a bit of a silly poke back at VH. No biggie.
    5. I’ll take an Ambien if you”ll take a Xanax! I can only imagine how red your face was when you were ripping me a new one. Take it easy. I’m not about to lose any sleep over disagreeing with you! Go in peace.
