Producer John Shanks Confirms Working With Van Halen

The Van Halen News Desk was the first to report last December that Van Halen were to record a new studio album with Grammy Award winning producer John Shanks in January, 2011. Shanks confirmed this with a tweet late Thursday night, “here we go kids…..vh” followed by tweeting this photo he took from the studio:

Last week, Shanks tweeted the hint: “going back to cali..good bye london.hello la.time to rock.i still believe!! in the power and thunder.big bass drum and big guitars.just me?”

51504VH: You have got to be shitty me!!!

Even though I do not like VHIII, I know the songs.

How can anyone talk about an era of music that they have not listened to……Really???!! WTF!

Listen to 5150, OU812, FUCK, Balance and VHIII

They are VH. Written and performed by Van Halen.

On FUCK, Judgement Day is equal to the Hardest VH of the DLR era. And there are many others that are worthy.

@ Let’s Rock…I hear what your sayin but I went to Monsters of Rock in San Diego and tried to accept Van Hagar but I ended up leavin the show. They were a completely different band and I lost interest in them. I didn’t need or want to buy any Van Hagar albums after that. My love for Van Halen was replaced with GNR and Janes Addiction.

Classic Van Halen concerts were the best in (my opinion), it still had the Club Days feel to them.

I saw Van Hagar live and it did nothing for me, I heard their music on the radio and it did nothing for me but I am not saying that they weren’t talented and successful…they just didn’t kick me in the face like Van Halen did.

I’m not even going to comment on VH3.

These are all just opinions buddy, some people relate to music that others don’t.

HA ha, good analogy 52yr old fan. I wish it would happen like that. I want Eddie to have the eye of the tiger again. ;)

    I meant Rocky III

    51504VH:

Very true. I guess I grew old along with VH and we both mellowed a little with age.

We can still rock but do not do it as must as we did in the 70′s.

I accepted and began to enjoy VH with Sammy. Nothing will ever replace the original VH but I found it acceptable. Eddie, Alex and Mikey were still there and the sharpness of Sammy began to fit.

VHIII has some good stuff. It takes playing the CD/MP4 more than twice but about 75% of it is acceptable.

During the Sammy years, I found myself drifting to other artists as well. More towards Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, etc…Hell even in the 70′s and early 80′s we still had AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Ted Nugent, etc…putting out material. But during both eras, VH was the best.

All of Van Halen is worthy of your time.

I saw one band come close to bringing back that energy of the early Van Halen concerts. That was the early Pearl Jam concerts, circa 1992.

But you are correct. I have never, to this day, ever seen or heard a crowd as crazy or loud as the crowd was at the Fair Warning Concert in 1982.

Just heard on FUSE on Direct TV The announcement that Van Halen were in the studio with new producer ( John Shanks) and Dave. I think this is finally goint to happen!!!!

  • http://yahoo.com therockmachine 3

i think it would be cool to see vh live and instead of just singing the roth era hits, i’d like them to go a little crazy and have roth sing some of the hagar era hits just for shits and giggles and if dave has any sense of humor besides his lame jokes about strippers and midgets, he should agree to do it only a song here and there not a whole show or anything just sing “why cant this be love” or “right now” i bet fans would get a kick out of it although only as a novelty and not taken seriously

therockmachine 3, his ego won’t allow it. besides phillster would whine like a baby. and trust me we don’t need that.

I’ve never been more excited about a band release and can’t wait to hear this new stuff. I grew up with the Diamond DLR – VH era
However Sammy’s crisp sound did grow on me although it did lack that charisma of DLR. it did take VH into a new direction and Eddie as alway’s was very creative. I’ve seen them both and still prefer the original.
I cried at the reunion tour it was great.
But they all have something to contribute and and I would love to see them all together on a stage somewhere before they all retire. Except Gary I really don’t care about seeing him. I only hope to see what the future holds and what Wolfgang brings He’s got the right teacher behind him.

  • 51504VH

Why would Dave sing a Van Hagar song?????????????? Sammy did nothing but talk shit about him and acted like he saved Van Halen and put them on the map.

And “YES” Dave talked shit about Sammy so I would never expect Sammy to sing a Roth-era song but Ed made him.

Ed will never be able to convince Dave to sing a Van Hagar song, he would drop the mic and walk away.

  • 51504VH

Sammy is talented and I respect how he keeps his fans informed and that he keeps putting out music “BUT” he won’t be singing any Van Halen songs so why do you Redheads try and make Dave sound like the bad guy that won’t sing any Van Hagar songs???

If your not aware of it…They hate each other!

Quit crying about wanting them to sing each others material, they don’t want to and they have enough of their own.

It’s just bad blood between the two and we need to understand and respect it.

  • http://vhnd.com 52yr old fan

Hey 51504VH, Ed also talked shit about sam, dave and mike. Ed will be calling the shots this time, not Dave. Been up reading old GW mag articles on Ed and VH most of the morning. Lots of shit and double talk from everyone but Mike and Alex. As a fan of both era’s I don’t want Dave singing any Sammy songs. Besides I don’t thinh he can.

  • 51504VH

OLD fan…Why would Dave sing Sammy songs?????? Why would Sammy sing Dave songs?????? They both have plenty of their own material!!!!!! and it’s two different styles!!!!!!

I’m sure that that’s the case “Dave can’t sing Sammy songs so thats why he doesn’t”. I sure want to see Dave up there singing “Why Can’t This be Love…NOT”.

Maybe I’ll want to hear it when I’m 52 tho…lol.

(I forgot that Sammy saved Van Halen and put them on the map)…lol.

I can see it now. Somewhere in middle America in August or September 2011, Dave staggers to stage front and says”Look at all the fuckin people here tonight – I say…..

Then he looks at Eddie as Ed crams out the beginning of DOA.

    PRICELESS………

  • dave goralczyk

im so nervous!been waitin sooo long for this to happen. Dont let us down fellows,so many have been waitin on yas to kiss and make-up. ONLY the mighty VH can resurrect REAL rock-n-roll. You guys are gonna make a lotta “bucket lists” come true! Im 42 now and still recall the 1st time i was introduced to”woman and children first”it was a life alterring moment, from that day on,VH was like a religion in our home!I cant wait to see you “follows suit”axle and slash? If dave and eddie can burrow the hatchet, that ANYTHING is possible! Welcome back boys!

  • http://na Brett

If anyone looks real close at the picture John Starks took of the 5150 III amp Eddie is using in the studio – you can see the gain, low, mid, high, and volume settings that are being used. The area in picture over the settings has been intentionally blurred, but you can still read and get Eddie’s exact amp settings for the 5150 III – now that is priceless!!!

  • http://yahoo.com therockmachine 3

i know his ego is outta control but dave could prove that he could make sammys songs better or just go bug fuck crazy and sing sammy songs about 100 shows into the tour to break the cycle of doin a half assed solo spot of the “ice cream man” again to the increasing boredom of audiences!!, im a fan of both eras and i dont care that they talk shit about eachother and that they have different styles i just am sick of seeing the same generic vh show everytime no matter who they are with ive seen all 3 versions and they are all good but i want something new

  • phillster

    Where`s the love??

  • http://www.myspace.com/wavesoffreedom1 Paul

I hope to God that #1 Wolfie is playing bass and not Eddie, and #2 that they actually record in the same room together instead of dialing in, swapping DAT tapes or e-mailing mp3 files. It’s bad enough Mike got the shaft but at least if they’re going to make another record, for heaven’s sake make it “live,” together like a BAND.

  • Joe

Rock desperately needs another swift kick in the butt. It’s all in your hands so no pressure.

  • http://www.edwardbass.us/TheInsider/ Producer Edward Bass

To be rather honest – I’m just a little worried about this dude Skanks creating the new VH album. He’s most known for for generating current “masterpieces” by Ashlee Simpson and Miley Cyrus! :)
