Sammy Hagar on Sharing Chickenfoot Drummer with Chili Peppers, Autobiography

Chickenfoot is four songs and “seven pieces of new music” into its second album, according to frontman Sammy Hagar. But he acknowledges there’s some concern about keeping that not-so-old gang of theirs together.

The challenge is drummer Chad Smith and his regular gig with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are currently writing for the follow-up to 2006′s “Stadium Arcadium.” “Once they start recording, Chad’s never going to be able to get a break,” Hagar tells Billboard.com. “If he does, he’ll get a couple weeks here, a couple days there, which is not really enough to devote to Chickenfoot. And when they’re done with [the album] they’re gonna go on the road for a year and a half. So we either have to get a new drummer or wait for Chad…which is unfair to Chickenfoot. It’s too good a band.”

But Hagar says he, Smith and rest of Chickenfoot — guitarist Joe Satriani and founding Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony — are not frustrated by the situation. “We care, but at the same time [Chickenfoot] is not mandatory,” Hagar explains. “It’s not like we feel like, ‘Hey, this is our only chance in life.’ Everyone’s already been there, done that. Chickenfoot is not our bread and butter, and I think that’s really important.”

Chickenfoot will play together again on Sept. 10 in Indio, Calif., and Sept. 11 in Stateline, Nev. Hagar says the group had plans to hit the studio after that but things are “kind of up in the air.”

However, the frontman is stoked by the material he and Satriani are writing, including the four songs Chickenfoot has already worked on as a quartet. “We probably have a record ready to go,” Hagar reports. “It’s just waiting for when we can all get together to do it” — a process also complicated by the Oct. 5 release of Satriani’s next album, “Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards,” and a three-plus month world tour that starts Oct. 16 in Ireland and comes to North America in December.

Meanwhile, Hagar and his band the Wabos are currently supporting Aerosmith. He has no recording plans of his own at the moment but is working on an autobiography, “Red,” with San Francisco music journalist Joel Selvin that he promises will be “really revealing, right down to just about everything you’d want to know” — including his tenures in Montrose and Van Halen.

“I figure there’s only one shot at an autobiography, and you’ve got to tell the story, as much as it may be painful,” says Hagar, who has made two previous attempts at his memoirs. “I really believe there’s a lot of people out there that really have no idea where I came from and who I really am. I’ve never been a press junkie, and I think that’s a good thing. So I think the book is going to blow people’s minds.”

@ Jeff — I thought someone here would’ve answered your curiosity about Mitch Malloy by now. I guess I’ll take a stab at answering your question (at the risk of wearing out my welcome at the VHND with all of my loooong posts and everything.)
But anyway as far as I know, Malloy was apparently set to be the new lead singer for VH in ‘96, after the departure of Sammy. He claims to have recorded some demos with VH, which was him singing some classic VH songs with the band such as Panama, Ain’t Talkin’‘bout Love, and Jump.
I’ve also heard he reportedly sang/recorded a couple of Hagar era tunes too. I think they were – Why Can’t This Be Love, and I could be wrong but I think he also did, Don’t Tell Me(What Love Can Do)
He said he backed out of the band after the MTV award debacle with DLR in ‘96. He said he was unaware that the guys in VH were going to be presenting with David Lee Roth. He felt that after that, it was going to be nearly impossible for another singer to be accepted. Since the general consensus from most fans after seeing that presentation was that Dave was going to be back in the band.
He felt that it kind of sabotaged his chance (or any other singers chance) of being the next successful and welcomed new lead singer with VH.
In my opinion Van Halen’s management at that time was completely screwed up! The decisions that were being made with all the confusion and everything… Wow, Ray Daniels is such a douche.
I would be very interested in hearing those demos that Malloy has (and I’ve heard that Mike Anthony might have those demos in his possession well.) But those demos will probably never see the light of day unfortunately.
Hell, there is “official” VH material that has never been released to the masses so I doubt any “unofficial” demos like that from a briefly hired unofficially announced new singer will ever be released. Never say never I guess, just don’t let the VH lawyers hear that.

I am very curious about the new material with Roth, because apparently over the last dozen or so years VH and Roth have briefly reunited and recorded a few tracks here and there before ending their relationship again. I think it’s happened two or three times. I wonder if those long lost tracks are going to be on the next album or if they were scrapped or re-worked/re-recorded or what??
Maybe parts of the songs will be used for new songs like some of the early VH demos weren’t released but reworked into making new songs. i.e. “Voodoo Queen–Mean Street”, “Last Night–Hang ‘em High” etc.
Anyway I want to write more/respond to some other posts here but outta time for now, and people reading this are probably out of patience from reading another one of my essays. I’m sure I will be writing some more later though when I have more time. I can’t help it ;)

@ JC – It’s kind of weird about the DLR website because there are some seemingly hardcore DLR fans dissing and talking shit to other hardcore DLR fans. You’d think that a website forum that has been filtered to such a narrowed down, concentrated demographic would have a mutual respect amongst themselves and comradery, but I’ve read some comments there and they hurl asinine insults at each other. And of course there is the non-stop, embarrassingly intellectually challenged insults directed at Hagar 24/7. I remember there’s even something called a “Sammy Hagar insult generator” or something like that.
You’d think the people in charge of that website would try to keep it a little more organized and legit. Some of the forums just basically seem like a place for graffiti-type insult/comments. But whatever… to each his own I guess. I just think that Dave is an intelligent and talented guy and I wouldn’t want that stupidness to reflect on Diamond Dave, ya know?.
What I mean is, I’m a fan of Dave but c’mon, Dave is better than that, but whatever.
I haven’t been to that website in a while though, but judging from your comments JC, it’s about how I remember it.

Thanks Diamond Dean, I like shooting the breeze with other VH fans. It beats workin’ :)

Tommy Boy – What’s up dude!? Thanks for the good words man. It’s cool to come here and see what the usual motley crue is up to and what they have to say. I see Dirty Duck is back. I wonder if Pete still comes here and I wonder whatever happened to No Mas Tony, he was one of the guys that I liked shooting the shit with every once in a while. Anyway man, watch out for BEES !! BEES EVERYWHERE!! They’re ripping our FLESH OFF!! They’re Huge and Sting Crazy. Your firearms are useless against them!!

I’ve been posting on here for a long time and it never gets old!

Roth-a-Holic, your name speaks volumes to me! I’ve read your work on here and you are entitled to your opinion, but the bashing has to stop dude!

Let’s all be honest for once shall we! This post is going to be a long one!

The VAN HALEN NEWS DESK is about ALL MEMBERS OF VAN HALEN AND FORMER ONES AS WELL!

It’s for the FANS to respond on articles they choose to put on here for our pleasure to read!

I for one love Sammy Hagar and to be honest, what was Van Halen doing when Sammy was in Montrose with a record and doing a tour? They were playing clubs, backyard parties TRYING to make a name for themselves by playing COVER TUNES of Montrose to the Kinks to whoever else!

Now in all fairness to Van Halen, all bands do it, but with Dave that was their motto on almost every album to play a cover song! And furthermore, Warner brothers wanted Sammy to replace Roth while making Van Halen 1, but the boys said no way!

So Roth-a-Holic, without Sammy Hagar, David Lee Roth coulda been out of Van Halen at the beginning! See guys like you piss me off thinking Dave was the ONLY singer in Van halen and he wasn’t! He left Van halen because he thought he WAS Van Halen and look where it got him? 1 good solo album and a life of being the odd man out of a band he helped make to be one of the greatest over what? I said this in an earlier post and where is the Crazy From The Heat movie he did after Van Halen?

You guys knock Sammy for his tequila, his Jimmy Buffet persona, but all you Dave fans don’t ever mention his flops and failures not one time? He had to follow in Sterns shoes and look what happened? The almighty Roth couldn’t make it as a DJ, no mention of that. If Roth was so popular and beloved by all, why didn’t it work out?

See Roth has tried and tried to live off of Van Halen even while Sammy was in the band he left for why again? Sammy didn’t wake up one morning and go “I think I’ll join Van Halen, make Eddie do “love” songs like most mention on here, and have to deal with all the criticism that Roth fans have dumped on him!

Sammy Hagar with Van Halen has 4 straight #1 albums! Count them, 4 straight! No band has done that since Led Zeppelin, and yet they had Roth the first 6 which were great except Diver Down! That album showed where Eddie was going and why Van Halen was cracking at the foundation. Now some will say the usual different time, different era, but music is music folks! Taste is taste and the fans loved the old line-up, but preferred the new line-up as it showed!

Sammy before Van Halen was doing just fine and it showed by everybody wanting to work with him in some way be it a soundtrack or a tour. Sammy also was going to Cabo long before Jimmy Buffet in the early 80′s to get away from the music scene. So when Dave bolted for a “movie” career, who did Eddie call to fill his shoes? Sammy Hagar!!

Sammy comes in and does his thing, and sure he sung a couple of Dave tunes live, but they did a couple of his tunes as well! That showed the fans they moved on from Dave and Sammy had every right not to sing a set of just Roth tunes! He had to set his place in the band and quite frankly when they played There’s Only One Way To Rock to start off the show proved to me Eddie was done with Roth!

So folks, Roth needs Van Halen, Sammy didn’t, but took advantage of the fact he was in a great band with 3 guys and made great music! Eddie turning on him over a kid and the fact Eddie was losing his mind didn’t help matters and that’s why Van Halen hasn’t done anything since Sammy left!

I’ve never heard people say Sammy is a great frontman, but I’ve heard his peers say he is one hell of a musician and a singer! Can the same be said for Roth? Nope all you get is he’s a great frontman! Well if he was the frontman of Van Halen don’t you think he would be leading the charge to show the fans the band is back and larger than ever?

As for Sammy’s lyrics, all you Desmond Childs write me a better song then since your so great!

    Both eras are awesome.
