“Get It Up” - Music Video

Friday, 8 January 2010

Longtime fan and Pipeline Studios Inc. team up to produce this fully animated music video for Chickenfoot’s “Get It Up”. Check it out!

Chickenfoot gives the story behind the video: A while ago, a dedicated fan who also happened to be an animator contacted the band about making a video. Here’s the resulting video, and also the story of its creation from Darin Bristow. If anyone else out there is a huge fan and wants to make a video, go for it! It may not be as extreme as this, but we’ve been blown away by all sorts of fan-created videos. If you make one, email support@chickenfoot.us and if we get a enough we’ll create a special place for them here on the site!

“The idea for an animated ‘Chickenfoot’ video came to me while jogging along the beach vacationing in Cabo San Lucas. I never workout without something Sammy blasting on my Ipod, and the Chickenfoot CD had just come out. The energy of the CD really inspired me and got me thinking big.

“As a Producer/Director for one of the world’s largest animation studios, with 16 years experience behind me, I dream big, and I aim high. As I was jogging, to I began to see animated scenes of a Chickenfoot rock video play out in my head, and then it hit me- why not email Sammy Hagar, the guy who’s always singing about following your dreams, and just ask to do an animated video??? Was I nuts from the Cabo heat? Did I have too many Waborita’s? It sounded like a longshot, but that’s exactly what I did. You never know unless you try right? I ran directly from the Cabo surf to my hotel and with 20 years as a Hagar fan behind me, I emailed www.redrocker.com , to pitch my idea.

“I sent it off and not long after, I got a response! It was from Carter, one of Chickenfoot’s managers, and he wanted to discuss my idea further. Pumped, I then did some animation designs of the band and video concept paintings, while Carter and I had some back and forth email communication over the following weeks. Carter then decided we should meet in person to go over my artwork when Chickenfoot’s tour passed through Toronto (my hometown) August 4th! It sounded too good to be true! It was, as I wound up being in South American on business August 4th and would not be able to meet him. Crushed, I was just about to email Carter my bad news, when he emailed me saying that the Toronto date was now moved to the 5th! I WOULD NOW BE ABLE TO MAKE IT, IF there were no delays in my flight. The smallest glitch in my travel would kill my meeting. I left South America at 4am and made it to Toronto the exact moment Chickenfoot hit the stage. My girlfriend and I watched the amazing show, then left 2 songs before the end to meet Carter at the hotel. I hadn’t spoken with him for a few days, but trusted his word. At 1a.m. in the morning, in the hotel lobby, exhausted, I set up my laptop with my Chickenfoot storyboard pitch playing, and had my band animation designs spread over the tables to show him. Sure enough, Carter, and the band, showed up! As Sammy Hagar wandered in and Michael Anthony chatted with my somewhat startled girlfriend, Carter and I discussed the video’s concept. I so badly wanted to ask the band to autograph my designs, but didn’t as I felt it would have been unprofessional at that time.

“It was a surreal night, but over a sturdy handshake, Carter agreed we should make this video. The next step was to find a production team, and start production. Animation is a very labor intensive process, so I needed a great team to make this look great. Pipeline Studios Inc., (PSI) another top level, world class animation studio offered to produce, and rounded up all their top guns to help me make this look great. Some of the best people I know in the business work with PSI and have worked on this video. I think that for the small group we had, and our limited budget, we made something very cool that I hope Chickenfoot fans will like! I also got to direct a dream project, one that I am very proud of, and worked very hard on. I also think, that for me, this story is living proof that Sammy Hagar is right- if you follow your dreams and never give up, you can make anything happen.”

“P.S. See if you can find all the subliminal Chickenfoot logo’s that we hid in the background paintings! Keep a close eye….they’re everywhere….

“Get it up” has great energy that pumps me up. The more I have listened to it the more I love it!
Darin Bristow Thanks man, that Was Rad. Don’t stop, make more! Cool story to go along with th video. I’m glad you acted on your inspiration and it worked out for everybody.
This makes me anxious for more Chickenfoot! I hope they work on and release a new album soon! Hopefully within a year. Knowing how productive and prolific Sammy is it will probably happen. I hope Chickenfoot is around for a Looooong time. I want at least 3 or 4 more albums. Or 20. It will never be enough.
    My Favs are:
    1. Oh Yeah (love the kick ass party energy)
2.Learning to Fall (one of the best slow/love songs Sammy has ever written and sang, awesome)
    3. Bitten by the Wolf ( great bluesy song, they could put out a whole album based on this sound!)
    4. Get It Up (love the aggressive and somewhat dark energy, kicks ass!)
    5. Down the Drain (love the deep heavy guitar sound and rhythm section-Mikey and Chad)
    6. Avenida Revolution( you can hear Sammy’s sincerity and angst “HEY YOU!” )
    7. Soap on Rope (just a good fun song and Joe’s guitar work on this album is astounding!)

  3. Don says:

omfg, what a killer ass song and not to mention the video keep up the good work guys! =)

  4. brivington says:

Very cool! I like the style of animation, and I realy liked how the girl rubbed the wall and the heat from her hand made the band appear, just like the CD cover. Well done! Yes, follow your dreams, that’s fantastic!

  5. Chris B. says:

    Excellent concept, animation, and execution!

  6. Chris B. says:

    Oh yeah! Song favs:
    1-Down the Drain
    2-Soap on a Roap
    3-Sexy Little Thing
    4-Runnin Out
    5-Bitten by the Wolf
    6-Learning to Fall
    7-Get it Up

  7. Panama Red says:

I wonder if the band will use this in an upcoming video release or DVD. Like showing the real guys in the band perform while cutting to this video back and forth, since there is over two more minutes of the song. That would be cool.
I really like the look of this animation. It reminds me a little of the Gorillaz videos.

  8. SCAR says:

That was pretty fucking cool and I haven’t even got a buzz yet!!! Keep up the good work!! Killer video for a kick ass song!!!

  9. ben says:

good video, it’s a shame the song sucks.
Arriba Arriba! that makes me laugh reminds me of Speedy Gonzalez.

  10. RA812 says:

I thought this was very cool. I wish VH fans would do half as much support as Sammy fans.

  11. Bluesbro says:

Nicely done, you have some serious skills.

What is it about zombies these days (and vampires for that matter). Just the latest fad I guess?

  12. Spencer544 says:

AWESOME! Enjoyed the video, very nice work that compliments a kick ass record!

  13. VH Dude says:

Wow..that’s a great story behind a killer video. Nice to hear it comes from a true fan. Hope CF throws this guy some tickets and back stage passes when they pass through his town next time. He deserves it. I love the song too…kind of a spooky feeling behind it with lots of energy.

  14. Dooley says:

Good job on the video. Even though this is not one of the better songs on the CD, I’d say. The Alice in Chains style harmonies don’t hold up for long and “arriba arriba” is best left to Speedy Gonzales, ben is right. Soap on a Rope and Avenida Revolution are a notch below the other songs as well. But 9 out of 12 are terrific, Chickenfoot & AC/DC can really be proud of what they did in 2009.

Still waiting on the present day incarnation of Van Halen to do something aside from a nostalgia tour. It would be awesome, all the gotta do is try. Their past is great, but what about now. If the other half can do it, so can Ed, Al, Dave, with all the talent they possess. Wolf is a lessor talent, but he can fill-in. It would be a major shot in the arm for rock n roll, so c’mon now.

  15. Jim says:

Does anybody notice that Mike’s background vocals sound completely different than they did in Van Halen.
Makes you wonder if it was primarily Ed’s vocals we heard.

  16. surfthis!! says:

good this should get the anti- hagar crowd going again

meanwhile you have people saying eddie sang backup
    please

that is one of the lamest things i have ever heard and you clearly have not listened to all 11 studio album with you think mike is not the KEY to the harmonies
yes you can hear him and sam on the chickenfoot disc which runs circles around anything ed has done in over 10 years..

  17. phil says:

    great job!

  18. K. Reyoch says:

    Fantastic job! Really, really good.

  19. Jim says:

    huh surfthis?

The backround vocals sound significantly diff in chickenfoot than they did with all van halen albums. Unless Mike’s voice changed that much, then it must have been Ed or whoever is signing with him in chickenfoot that is the difference.

  20. Pete says:

This is awesome - dude you are talented! This song rocks even harder live, but this is pretty cool. I’m blown away with some people’s creativity and imagination.

To those that thought of “Speedy Gonzalez” when you heard “arriba arriba”, that’s a pretty sad reflection on your awareness of the world around you. I hope you get to travel and experience a little more to balance out your pop culture references. I can’t imagine being so sheltered…

  21. Big AL says:

    Surfthis,

Do your homework! Ed did sing back-up in Van Halen along with Mike. Sam and Dave would both sing harmony parts also! If you listen you can usually hear a three part harmony on all the albums.

Great work to the artist that created the video!!

  22. Cam Winston says:

    surfthis,
Youtube is full of Sammy & the Waborita vids & “The Other Half” stuff where you can hear Mike, who joins in, quite clearly. We don’t need a Zapruder film to know that Mike Anthony is indeed…..Mike Anthony.

It was Ed? Dude, didn’t you hear “How many say I”?

  23. FairWarning says:

Outstanding! I enjoyed the video, and it was perfect for one of the best songs on the record. Hopefully they market that video for Get it Up!

  24. surfthis!! says:

    mike was the back up
i realize only al did not sing on the albums but
    mike WAS the backup.

how many say i makes me want to throw up.

    end of discussion.

  25. Keith says:

Awesome work for this CF video. I don’t see why all you others have to get off base of the original post thread. What’s up with that ? Keep the comments related to post please. I sure wish VHND would do a better job moderating these. Perhaps allow none at all, after all, what’s the point. Or allow only 1 per email ID, and permanently ban those who can’t play nice. IMO :)

Nah…not sheltered. I travel lots already, thanks for “hoping”. Some people are just too serious and “politically correct” It doesn’t take very much to rattle some cages, and it’s fun to see how people react. Just stirrin up some shit, that’s all, and there’s no guilt.

  27. axeshredder says:

those who dis a song because of a lyric….are plain ol retarded…grow up and shuddup…oooo he said arriba arriba..or oh yeah…so what…i think its cool and expresses a particular feeling well…some real sad cases are posting in here.lol

  28. surfthis!! says:

my god its hard rock not
    fricking Brit. lit class!
    ha. ha…

    people complaining about lyrics

    its hard rock people
classic balls to the wall hard rock
what do want him to say

    some P.C. bs???

  29. Rip off says:

My favorite song on the CF album is ‘Runnin Out.’

I also liked it 20 years ago when it was called ‘Runaround’ on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album.

  30. Pete says:

Thanks for proving my fairly pointless point Dooley…

  31. phillster says:

    get up, get it up,
love walks in hmmmm… I know!
    Dove walks in
    tapped out? thought so.

  32. darin bristow says:

Hey gang! I’m the Director of this video and a longtime VH fan! I go waaaaay back to the VHML! Thanks to everyone for the great comments on this video! VH fans are the best! It was a lot of hard work to get this done in the time we had, and it would not have looked as great as it did if it weren’t for Pipeline Studios Inc.’s support. We has some serious talent behind this and it came out great!

    Hopefully more to come!

    Cheers,

    Darin
