The sound of “classic rock” is alive and well on Chickenfoot. Actually, the term classic rock is a little ridiculous, as it is used to describe anything from about four decades of music. Let’s just say that with Chickenfoot the mid-80’s spirit of Van Halen proudly parties on.

This would be Van Halen Mark II, with Sammy Hagar on vocals. One of the most unheralded, yet distinctive voices in rock belongs to former VH bass player Michael Anthony. His harmonizing with Hagar back in the Van Halen days were a big part of the band’s successful singles run during their period together. On the self-titled Chickenfoot debut, they repeat this formula to winning effect with “ Get It Up,” “My Kinda Girl,” and the power-ballad “Learning To Fall.”

Guitar hero Joe Satriani takes on the Eddie role, one he is well suited to. Satriani has played with numerous bands over the years, including Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, and even the almighty Spinal Tap. In the drum chair is another virtuoso musician, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As Smith has demonstrated with his Bombastic Meatbats on their recent Meet The Meatbats, he is an amazing player.

Although the musicians in the band certainly have the capability to show-off, that was never the intention of Chickenfoot. This is a proudly commercial album, and sounds all the better for it. I have to say, I miss good old radio-rock like this.

Chickenfoot has done pretty well so far, having already been certified Gold by the RIAA. But for whatever reason, the band has released a deluxe limited-edition. This version includes the original 11 songs, plus a previously unreleased track titled “Bitten By The Wolf.”

There is also a one-hour long DVD included in the package, featuring a mix of live and studio versions of the Chickenfoot tunes. The highlight of the DVD for me is them doing “Bitten By The Wolf.” Although it is not the full-length song, it shows Satriani really shredding, which is always fun to see.

I recommend this edition of Chickenfoot pretty strongly to anyone who does not yet own the original version. If you do already have it, then it becomes a matter of how much one new song as well as an hour’s worth of video footage means to you. In the US, this version is only available at Best Buy, and is available in the UK and the rest of Europe from earMusic.

    Joe never played with Zappa.

or deep purple, ritchie would never let his spot light get taken away.

Joe took Ritchie Blackmore’s spot as lead guitarist for one tour when Blackmore bailed on Deep Purple in the early or mid nineties. If I remember correctly, they offered him the gig on a permanent basis but he turned it down because he was still rolling with his solo thing.

The “double dipping” with releasing a CD more than once is really getting old. Are we not in a recession? I want the entire CD the first time I buy it!!

  • Pete

As usual, the Kayser has it bang-on. Joe DID play in DP…that’s the genesis of their “Highway Star” cover. I think the Zappa thing is the author getting Satch mixed up with Vai, his former student.

BOTTOM LINE: Chickenfoot is the best thing to happen to big rock in some time. New tunes from a new band that sounds different from everything else, but yet with the brilliant musicianship it has a familiar feel to it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Signed,

Fans of bad-assed music, and VH-only fans that can’t stand to see the Foot succeed.

Guess they are trying to hard to go platinum, and now with a 2 disc set will be easier if the same people re-buy the cd
Funny how they compare CF with VH.
Satch’s playing is cool but his songwriting skills don’t get near Ed’s shoes.

I for one bought the LP and the first cd. I wanted a bad ass full sized album cover and it also included free download of all 12 songs. I subscribed to Chickenfoots premium site got two free tickets to the show at the Hall of Fame met and shook hands with Sammy Hagar. Greatest day ever great show. He is a real man. A great guy who is very humble and greatful of his fans and he has a true gift. He is a lyrical genius. How many times have we gotten laid to his music??? Just from 5150 and 0U812 alone. Not to mention all the kick ass solo and great new Chickenfoot stuff. I celebrate all that is Van Halen both Sammy and Dave and Chickenfoot. This is my kinda music. Through the high times and low this gets us through. I also bought two of the new limited edition with DVD as I do my part for the bands I really love. One day soon I hope to get all of Sammy’s solo work. Congrats to Sammy!!! I hope you stay young and live forever and have many many years to come of inspiring music. I appreciate all you do and love you!!! Fan for life keep up the kick ass job. I was watching Long Road to Cabo tonight again and happened to hear a song I didn’t recognize, I googles the lyrics and immediately downloaded it. It was the song “Try (try to love again)” off Musical Chairs. Good stuff. Whoever pieced that in the ending of the video with Sammy’s commentary was a genius. Sammy you are a gift from God to us all. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

mikey comes across sounding bitter.dlr was busting his chaps marketing the band.Mikey and his family should be thanking the king!!

Could some of the posts get any more juvenile? Complaining about re-issues, or deluxe packages? How many hundreds of artists in all generes of music have done this? I have no idea, but to say hundreds would be a conservatively low estimate. Enough already, of this nonsensical bitching. It’s as if some are inferring that Chickenfoot is breaking new ground by doing this. Hardly. How many times has a greatest hits c.d. come out with ONE or TWO new songs? Who knew CF would enjoy the amount of success they’ve had so far? I suspect they may not have, nor did they anticipate the subsequent video content that is now available. Even being the mighty VH fan that I am,I’ve enjoyed this group (gasp)and hope there’s more.

“Mikey should thank the ‘king’?” What king would this be? Are you referring to DLR….the same guy who spewed unlimited diarrhea about his former band back in the 80′s and 90′s? Granted, DLR is unquestionably a stellar front man and I love the original VH. But, if he didn’t have a tendancy to be such a loose-cannon and at times a buffoon, VH could have gotten on with business as usual long ago. I hope they can figure it out. Like most VH fans, I’m ready.

Come on…Van Halen is the KING of the reissue.. How many Best of albums do we need with the same songs? How about the fact that Right Here, Right Now has different “bonus” material, meaning you have to buy both to get all songs?!?!? What a joke…I love VH as much as anyone, but they lost sight of their stated goal about not being about the money. Ed is ALL about the money! Must have taken that crack from DLR too seriously about playing on Beat It for free. Now he won’t let one penny go.

    The Dude.
    Exactly.

    The Dude:

    Sorry man, but you’re wrong.

VH has “re-issued” their first 6 albums “once”
They also only have “2″ greatest hits albums.

The KINGS of re-issues and greatest hits my man are “Aerosmith” and “Kiss”
Without a doubt two groups who cant get enough of suckin’ their own dicks…

  • Rick Pride

Right on Duck!!!! Hell yeah!!!! Preach it brother!!!!
