Dan Kendrick performs ‘Jump’ as David Lee Roth from Van Halen

Saturday, 14 November 2009

Here’s a Van Halen-related story from New Zealand. The story is from back in May of this year, but the footage only recently hit Youtube.

From Stuff.co.nz:

Nelson musician jumps into final
The Nelson Mail

Nelson musician Dan Kendrick’s energetic, hair-tossing rendition of the Van Halen song Jump has earned him a place in the final of the television talent quest show Stars in Their Eyes.

Kendrick’s performance as David Lee Roth, the American rock group’s former lead singer, was broadcast on last night’s programme.

His win places him among nine contestants who will compete in the final, to be broadcast in late June.

Kendrick said this morning he was completely surprised to hear his character’s name called as the winner, especially because it was the first time he had won anything.

“I once won a sailing race in an Optimist dinghy, but that was by default, because the boat in front cheated.”

Kendrick, a co-organiser of Smokefree Rockquest and a member of Nelson bands Mojo and Road, said his win was also a surprise because he did not think he sang as well as he could have.

Roth was not his first choice of singer to portray, but another entrant already had dibs on Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant.

However, that turned out to be a “blessing in disguise”, because he ended up having “great fun” as Roth.

“It took about three hours just to do the hair.”

He said he was hoping that his success would have positive repercussions for his music career.

The winners of each episode are decided by votes from the studio audience, who pick their favourite impersonator.

Kendrick said the audience was chosen at random, after people applied online. They were then screened to make sure they did not know the performers taking part.

All episode winners go through to a grand final, where the public will have an opportunity to take part in deciding the winner by text or phone voting.

Now we’re getting desperate for news.

  2. blindbubbacheeks says:

Not even sure where to begin….

  3. John J says:

Not to bad rendition of DLR but the guitar solo SUCKED!!!!!!

  4. Where's Dave? says:

First David Lee Roth sighting in almost two years.

  5. Dave Bridge says:

Oh do me a favour this NOT, repeat NOT news. This is benal crap!
And still we wait for the mearest hint of NEW MUSIC!

  6. Skibble5150 (Montreal) says:

    Wow…really slow news day.

  7. Jeff says:

There’s only one, and there will only ever be one, David Lee Roth. It’s okay for the rest of us to pretend…in front of the bedroom mirror.

  8. chris.omeara says:

Amazingly, I have no comment for this article- I’m drawing a blank…

  9. Jakey Swayne says:

Oh my fucking god… The only good DLR impersonator was the guy from Atomic Punks, even Fox News would shake their heads if they saw what kind of news is being published lately. Guys, we want real news or no news at all, this is just crap, and you know it!

  10. Robert says:

THIS is what desperately hoping for VH news gets you!!!

  11. Robert says:

What a bunch of fucking whiners! The VHND posts a story with a Van Halen element to it, and if it’s not news from or of the band itself, some readers bitch about it continuously as if their opinion is a vote that will bring about change. What’s the point of complaining about something that has absolutely no negative impact on anything in your life? So what, some stories are better than others. Big deal. Here’s hint: Don’t like what you’re reading, then stop fucking reading. Think it is a waste of time and bandwidth, then stop fucking reading. Roll your eyes, shrug your shoulders, whatever. Just stop bitching about stuff like a little fucking pussyboy who thinks this website caters to you alone, bitch.

  12. T.O. Mike says:

    Terrible!!

  13. Dave says:

That was fucking horrible! This guy has NO energy whatsoever. He doesn’t remotely remind me of Diamond Dave. The clothing is all wrong, the hair is awful, the singing sucked. Absolutely nothing here to like. This act would have sucked at a birthday party, much less a television show.

  14. Canes_fan5150 says:

The singing was a little off but he did a good reenactment of Dave in the jump video

  15. chris.omeara says:

People have a right to bitch, just like other people have the right to bitch about those who bitch. It’s called FREE SPEECH. We still have it. I’m not sure for how much longer though…

  16. chris.omeara says:

go to infowars on the web

  17. Bluesbro says:

This was so bad it was actually entertaining. He didn’t look like Dave, Can’t sing and was off beat on his so called dance moves. Other than that he was spot on.

  18. VH Dude says:

Although I cringed throughout the entire video…I don’t have a problem at all with VHND posting stuff like this. If there was real news to report, VHND wouldn’t have to scrounge up stuff like this. Actually, it just highlights how amazingly talented Dave and Ed were/are.

  19. jrocks says:

    Low End

  20. The Doctor says:

    Jesus, it’s come to this.

For some reason this makes me recall “Ford Fairlane”, as played by The Dice.

“Jesus f*cking Christ. David Lee Roth is spinning in his f*ckin grave, and the guy ain’t even dead yet!!!!”

  21. Aftershock says:

Dan Kendrick, I’ve met Ralph Saenz. You are no Ralph Saenz.

  22. SCAR says:

    PURE GARBAGE!!!!!!!

  23. Van Foot says:

    Yuck,

I thought the cover was pretty bad. I didn’t quite understand where the link came from. Is that David Lee Roth’s kid fronting the DLR band while Dave is making bank on the reunion stuff with Van Halen? This is all getting confusing. At least Chickenfoot news is pretty straight forward.

  24. Klaas says:

This one is from Holland, this sucks!!

  25. Garrett says:

That was actually pretty entertaining…you know, like when you slow down to look at a car wreck or something…The only thing worse than that guy’s pathetic attempt at DLR was the guitar player’s pathetic attempt at EVH’s solo! LONG LIVE THE MIGHTY VH!

  26. Streetavenger says:

    This absolutely SUCKED…

  27. Doug says:

He didn’t sound like Dave, and he didn’t look like Dave. OK, he made some of the moves. Seriously, WTF? He kind of copied the the Jump video.

  28. Rich says:

Waited for how that guy was going to do tapping on a reliced looking Stratocaster and nothing. Just cuts short the solo…that was some lame shit.

I don’t blame VHND for putting this up, it was just horrific to watch and listen to.

  29. kayser sozay says:

Reminded me of Roth on the Sammy/Dave tour. Seriously.

  30. mitch says:

TO ALL THE MOANERS AND PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT ‘OH THIS ISNT PROPER NEWS’ STOP READIN AND SHUT UP! if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all!

I personally think ANY vh news on here is great, and the guys here do a LOT of hard work, so give em a break! I appreciate all the great news whatever it may be!

oh and that dlr dude was pretty cool!

  31. Skutch says:

Please Lord Jesus. Come back today

  32. Ron says:

This is hardly “news” and if this is the only crap you can find to post in order to keep the site “fresh” I’d prefer you just didn’t post for a couple of extra days.

At this rate, I’m going to have to get my two year old to dance around to a VH song and upload it to Youtube so you have some “news” to post…

  33. steve says:

If DLR was dead, he’d be rolling in his grave.

  34. Dirty Duck says:

Even I think this is stupid…

The last thing I needed to see is the guy from nelson trying to be dave….

“Dont blame me for the errors of my bastard sons”
    -DLR

  35. Sephryan says:

That was awesome! The greatest thing I’ve ever seen. If Dave ever quits again they should get this guy for the band.. And the guitar player was spot on!! I’m going to loop this all day long.. :-)

  36. charlie says:

worst ever. ever. the guitar world mag cover story. lame. man all we want is a new record w Dave.

  37. sean says:

Serious news? This is a rock band, best ever, but it’s still music. If you want real news about what’s going on in the world, don’t look for it here. Music is entertainment the last time I checked. Anything to do with this band should be posted here. In the long run, does it really matter in the world what is posted here? Long live the Mighty Van Halen.

  38. Ron says:

Sean says: Anything to do with this band should be posted here.

Really? Better get a camera into the sh*tter at Ed’s house then.

  39. Andy says:

Wow he is he “Worst That I’ve Seen !!!

  40. Dangerous Dan says:

    You’re totally kidding me, right?

If you want to see someone do the cover right. Check out Ralph Saenz,(authorized by Van Halen) when he was with The Atomic Punks. Now he is with Steel Panther! Even Michael Anthony used to jam with these guys! Check this vid and decide for yourself. Brian Young on guitar, who DLR stole after Steve Vai left!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FClISR5e9a4

  41. Pete says:

DAN…you are right…I checked it out, and that guy is great. Saw Brian Young on the “Sam & Dave” tour too, is that correct?

  42. Smax says:

Ah c’mon, what next Van Halen Bluegrass….wait…nevermind…

  43. ringostore says:

Oh New Zealand! No wonder you went bankrupt years ago! Everything about that was Retarded!

The singer looked like Getty Lee and sounded like my local auto parts guy trying to sing.

The guitar player with his single coil pick up fender tried to have a moment like he had on the toilet the same day.

    Oh well, good for laughs!
