Interview: SAMMY HAGAR

STRUTIN’ THEIR STUFF…. With a mini Club trek & European tour under their belt HAGAR, SATRIANI, SMITH & ANTHONY better known as CHICKENFOOT are ready to stomp there way across the U.S.A. through the end of September.

The veteran Rock ‘n’ Roll outfit is set to take flight with tour dates beginning this week including a visit to our neighbors to the North in Toronto. The bands live performances to date have been an unprecedented success not to mention the talk of the summer tour circuit.

The bands self-titled debut album had people flocking to their music outlets of choice seeding CHICKENFOOT at number 4 on the Billboard Charts right out of the gate. Quite a feat for a group of old school Road Warriors with well over a century in the Rock ‘n’ Roll trenches.

The Rock Rapport had the good fortune once again to speak with Hall of Fame frontman SAMMY HAGAR in between CHICKENFOOT tour legs.

Ross CAT – Hello SAMMY from the Rock Rapport in Buffalo, NY, as always it’s a pleasure to speak with you, how are things in the henhouse following the tour abroad.

SAMMY – I’m good brother really good as you can imagine. Hey it’s not snowing up there in Buffalo is it (laughter)?

Ross CAT – No snow, but it hasn’t stopped raining in weeks, believe it or not we’ve even had a few hail storms this summer.

SAMMY – I’m just pulling your leg, the reason I ask is I was watching the Food Network last night because you know I love to cook, I saw ANTHONY BOURDAIN cruising all the restaurants around Buffalo during a blizzard. I thought to myself OH BOY I’m glad we’re hitting the Northeast during the summer months. I Love the people up north but I can do without the cold & snow.

Ross CAT – Congratulations on the overwhelming critical & commercial success CHICKENFOOT is enjoying with the debut record; not to mention the fact that the tour is selling out every venue on the schedule.

You took a little criticism early on about some comments & comparisons you made about the bands new music, seems you knew this thing had legs before anyone else did.

SAMMY – You know I did take a little flak about some things I said; I assure you it was out of pure excitement about this group of guys I’m playing with and the music we’re making.

It is truly awesome the response we’ve gotten all over the world. My hopes were that this band would be accepted by the public but you just never know. It’s a strange and difficult time in the music industry and we’re playing a somewhat unique style of music, so at this point in our careers the success is a bonus.

Ross CAT – It’s been a whirlwind summer thus far as the CHICKENFOOT tour is set to stomp across North America.

SAMMY – Honestly I’m having the time of my life it’s out of sight the places we’ve been playing. Man I’ll play anywhere with this band we don’t even ask how big the venues are it’s about jamming and sharing the energy with the folks in front of us.

Ross CAT – I’m sure you couldn’t help but take notice when you stepped on stage in Montreux for the Jazz Festival in front of 50,000 people, tell us about that incredible show?

SAMMY – Yeah that was an amazing festival to be a part of sharing the bill with STEELY DAN & DAVE MATTHEWS BAND. I said to DAVE MATTHEWS, “what the hell are we doing taking the stage after a DMB set”. He had a good chuckle over that, after our set I asked him if he wanted to open for us on the U.S tour. He’s a lot of fun and funny as shit, we had a few cocktails that day.

Ross CAT – That had to be quite the 4th of July, I’m sure the Swiss will never be the same.

That show almost didn’t happen as drummer CHAD SMITH spent a little time on the chopping block during the tour as he clipped a wing, but he managed to muscle through it.

How’s CHAD holding up as CHICKENFOOT prepares to hit the road for the second leg of the tour?

SAMMY – Yeah he over did it a little, he literally ripped the muscle of his shoulder, he only took a few days off and finished the tour.

Personally I’ve never played with anyone who plays as hard as CHAD does. He absolutely exhausts every song that we play, at the end of each song it’s like WHEW lets catch our breath. Because of the way CHAD plays we take every song to it’s limit, its all about keeping up with SMITH.

I was talking to the longtime respected Bay area critic Joel Selvin after our show at the Fillmore, he told me the only guy he’s ever heard play as hard & loud as CHAD was KEITH MOON.

Ross CAT – Another cool date coming up on the summer tour is a free show at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame on August 15th.

Tell us what special meaning that gig will have for yourself & MICHAEL ANTHONY being forever enshrined in Cleveland for your contributions with VAN HALEN.

SAMMY – Yeah that is pretty awesome, I Love the fact that we get to go back, not just to play but to support the Hall. It’s no secret how proud MIKE & I are to be members, in my humbled opinion you’d think our other band mates would be in there as well for what they’ve accomplished in their careers.

Ross CAT – The Sound Academy show this week will be your second visit to Toronto. I was one of the fortunate 500 folks to see the “Road Test Tour” at the Mod Club in May.

Rumor has it that you and CHAD got tangled up with RUSH guitarist ALEX LIFESON the night before and tore up the town.

SAMMY – Hey man lets clear that up right hear & now, I blame ALEX for that night; it was my tequila but that boy gave us hometown tour I won’t soon forget, he can throw down with the best of them.

Ross CAT – Was there any discussion about ALEX taking the stage with CHICKENFOOT that night for a song or two?

SAMMY – No, we’re really trying to focus on the CHICKENFOOT material on this first tour. Every place that we played there were world class musicians & friends. Man we had some of the best shredders on the planet in the house like ALEX, BRIAN MAY & STEVE LUKATHER comin’ out to the shows. I told every one of those guys they have an open invitation to come to CABO and jam.

Ross CAT – Lets talk about the new record; you continue to defy nature with your throat thrashing vocals, holding nothing back on tracks like “Oh Yeah” & “Runnin Out”, is there something in that CABO WABO Tequila keeping those pipes polished?

SAMMY – Don’t ask me it’s some kind of miracle, I don’t smoke cigarettes so that certainly has helped preserve my voice. Beyond that I think I break every rule there is for a singer. I drink, I party, I Yell & Scream, I don’t warm up properly and more often then not I’m sleep deprived, there isn’t much that I don’t do that’s for sure.

Just the other day SATCH & I were talking about changing up the encore a little for this leg of the tour, maybe putting “Heavy Metal” in place of “Bad Motor Scooter”. As JOE was listening to it on the computer I started to sing along with it, he looked over at me and said how the fuck do you still sound the same as you did in 1981.

So far, knock on wood, I can still hit all the notes, I feel extremely fortunate in that respect.

Ross CAT – Now that the CHICKENFOOT tour is in full flight did you find the “Road Test” club rehearsal shows beneficial to both the band and the new songs?

SAMMY – I’m glad you asked that because it was one of the smartest things I’ve ever done as an artist in my career. If we would have just jumped into a bigger venue it really could have been difficult.

The production of this show needed to be built from the ground up, from sound & lights to the performance of the songs. These smaller gigs afforded everyone involved the opportunity to see what this band is all about and were we wanted to take the songs in a live setting.

We started playing just the album and a few encores which was about 75 minutes of material in the first few “Road Test” shows; at the end of those club dates we were clocking in at just under 2 hours with the same amount of material. Those shows really gave us the chance to get our feet under us allowing us to focus on jamming & stretching out the songs in the right places.

Ross CAT – You’ve obviously survived some tenacious times through your VAN HALEN years, tell us how this group of accomplished musicians manage the ego friendly environment that is apparent on stage.

SAMMY – I’m just hoping that’s somewhere I never have to go again. When I joined VAN HALEN the ego thing wasn’t an issue, they had just finished with that shit with the previous singer.

When I joined the band everyone was happy, it was the polar opposite of what they’d been dealing with. It really was a fantastic time in my life & career. For some reason after a decade of success and what I thought was a lifelong friendship someone’s ego got in the way and it wasn’t mine.

You know Ross, things happen within a band just like any other relationship because your dealing with more then one personality.

I really don’t see that happening with CHICKENFOOT, the older you get you realize that you have to check your ego at the door if you want to be involved in a band of this caliber. For me to be able to play with MIKE again at this level and to be welcomed with open arms as a singer/songwriter by guys like JOE SATRIANI & CHAD SMITH is truly something I treasure at this stage of my career.

Ross CAT – Both yourself and JOE have enjoyed tremendous success in your respective solo careers, talk about what it’s like joining forces with someone like SATCH in writing new songs.

SAMMY – When we started to work on this project we wanted to fuse the strengths that each of us bring to the table as a musician, we tried not to change each others style.

With CHICKENFOOT, JOE still writes the same kind of music but he doesn’t have to worry about the melody & chorus or the lyrics, I can take that off his plate. He can come up with the bare bones of each song and I try to fill in the pieces. It’s a great relationship, after so many years of being solo artists its really a relief to share the process with someone whose had the same experience of being responsible for every single detail that goes into making new music.

I really love were this thing has taken us, I knew it was something special when he was playing the riff in “Sexy Little Thing” and I just started to sing the lyrics.

As an artist its creative moments like those that are inspirational, to me these new songs have the magic of PLANT/PAGE, JAGGAR/RICHARDS hell even EDDIE & SAMMY.

Ross CAT – With the CHICKENFOOT shows selling out in every market will the less fortunate fans that didn’t get tickets have the opportunity to see these performances on DVD in the future?

SAMMY – Absolutely, we’ve recorded just about every step of the way. We filmed the Montreux show as well as another great gig at the Fillmore in San Francisco. I believe there’s a handful of shows set for filming on the rest of the summer tour as well.

When this thing is done it’s going to be really cool were not just recording one show, we’re taking songs from a number of different places to try and bring that CHICKENFOOT vibe right into your living room.

FOOT NOTE: As always the Rock Rapport would like to Thank SAMMY HAGAR for his valuable time. We would also like to Thank Jessica Erskine from Rogers & Cowan for taking care of the Rock Rapport once again.

skutch, why don’t you guys get it? eddie writes the music, the singers write the lyrics. ed said it himself. and another thing, the music on 5150 was written before sammy joined the band. i’ve seen interviews where eddie said that when sammy sang dreams it made his hair standup. dave could never sing a song like dreams. dave was the best at what he did sing. and one more thing, EDDIE asked sammy to join VH. take it out on him.

Chickenfoot DVD vey cool, but a Van Halen DVD from the last concert would be priceless. Where is DLR these days?

  • http://Michaelwestgate1@yahoo.com wtf !!!

Of course Chickenfoot was really pushing , club shows , dvd , late night shows , cuz they have to . Sam said himself that they play a little off mainstream music . Glad they made the album , and I to am thankful for helping to keep Van Halen alive . This new album of theres is musicaly talented but ok at best . Van Halen , on the other hand , does not need to push themselves so hard and have always been traditionaly secretive !!! Its always been part of there allure fellas . Van halen has also put out a couple not so popular albums ; however , this time they are gonna blow the fuck out of everyone . Daves first album with the band in years , and Eddie wanting to pave the way for wolfies career . So anyway , if ya didnt get to see Van Halen live this last time out and your complaining then get a fuckn job , get off your ass , and get a ticket !!

  • Skutch

50yr old, I know Ed asked Sam to join. They were both getting their Lambo’s fixed. yeah yeah yeah. What’s your point? It makes no difference to me who wrote the songs. I’m not going to say I think Best of Both Worlds is a good song when I don’t. There’s a reason why he never presented those songs when Dave was in the band. Dave doesn’t think they are good either. BUT, I regress. It isn’t a competition. Like what you like. It makes no difference either way. I’m not even sure what we are arguing here.

    WTF!!!:

WTF??? “Van Halen, on the other hand, does not need to push themselves so hard.”

Perhaps but don’t you think waiting 11 + years to put out new music is taking it a bit far.

I am a big Van Halen fan and now I am a Chickenfoot fan. Egos and substances have always ruined great bands and hopefully the bad blood will be put away and result in great music for years to come.

This whole argument of which version of Van Halen is really a subjective argument!!! There is no right or wrong answer,It’s almost asking “do you like pepperoni on your pizza or just cheese” Both incarnations were great!!!! When in 1984/85 the great split happened i was devastated, but i liked dave’s solo shtick and when i heard on the glorious afternoon that a man named sammy hagar was taking over the Vh front role i immediatly went through my old cassette tapes to find anything with this hagar on it!!! FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH -i thought what a fit this just might work-hence 5150 and BINGO pure raw energy sort of a Van Halen record except for now it was electric and full of adrenaline and power sort of 1984 turned up to freakin 10!!!
My whole point is i was turned onto hagar and roth’s solo stuff so instead of being negative look at it that now weve got several groups to enjoy and i count chickenfoot and the old/new vh among that category. If only ed would get roth and the other family clan back into the studio we just might have something to compare it to!!!

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

As far as when is VH gonna release a dvd of the reunion tour?

I say we should see it around the holidays this year….
If not, then thats just not a good sign.

    The tour ended in 2007.
iIt shouldnt take almost 3 years to wait for that.
    Ridiculous.

    Guys:

Let’s be honest here, Van Halen is a distant memory of a band. 24 years ago, a guy named Sammy Hagar joined because Dave was TOO BIG to stay in it. The problem I have is that the so called “fans” think Dave made Van Halen. Sorry to sound negative, but he didn’t. 4 guys made that band and they ruled the world. A world they ruined with stupidity and bad decisions. Sammy came into Van Halen with nothing to lose and everything to gain. See the problem here is that this is a Chickenfoot article and it turns into a debate about Van Halen. Sammy is in the Hall of Fame because of Van Halen. He was in the band longer than Roth and made as many albums. What Sammy had to endure for over a decade by being the guy who replaced Roth and doing it successfully is something that needs to be applauded. 4 #1 albums says alot to me guys.Singing the songs Eddie wanted him to sing and doing it for the fans. Sammy may sound bitter at times towards Van Halen, but do you blame him? Seriously here though, I’ve seen Chickenfoot and they rock hard! I’ve seen Van Halen 5 times, seen Dave, and seen Sammy numerous times and to be honest, Sammy is a better performer and singer! Dave lived off of being Dave, not being a singer or a musician. I read on here all the time that Sammy’s lyrics blow, but does Dave really write a better song? I mean really, what is a Panama? You don’t care about what Panama means because the music makes it sound good! 5150 is a great song and it showed just how much Eddie loved Sammy in Van Halen. That song would not fit in with Dave. Eddie wanted to take Van Halen in a different direction and sorry to say this, but Sammy was the man for the job. All the bitching on here just shows that an opinion and your time is wasted.

I love all versions of Van Halen except for Mike being gone, but then who would be in Chickenfoot? These guys have earned the right to be on here or any other site baring the name Van Halen because it’s part of their history. But as a fan, I wonder why Eddie doesn’t deliver anymore? A decade of obscurity is not good and getting clean is the right way, but Eddie now needs to make an album, do a tour, and bury the hatchet with Sammy and Mike and we as fans would move on and respect Van Halen again now. Not their past, because I respect all of it, but here in the now. Keep Chickenfoot separate from Van Halen, and keep Dave separate from Sammy. 2 different brands that both delivered!

  • Jeremy

    I love it!
