Sammy Hagar: Chickenfoot in-concert DVD coming
In a recent interview, Sammy Hagar says that Chickenfoot has been filming gigs for an in-concert DVD.
From Best of WNY:
Concert Preview: CHICKENFOOT
Toronto Sound Academy
Wednesday August 5th
Interview: SAMMY HAGAR
STRUTIN’ THEIR STUFF…. With a mini Club trek & European tour under their belt HAGAR, SATRIANI, SMITH & ANTHONY better known as CHICKENFOOT are ready to stomp there way across the U.S.A. through the end of September.
The veteran Rock ‘n’ Roll outfit is set to take flight with tour dates beginning this week including a visit to our neighbors to the North in Toronto. The bands live performances to date have been an unprecedented success not to mention the talk of the summer tour circuit.
The bands self-titled debut album had people flocking to their music outlets of choice seeding CHICKENFOOT at number 4 on the Billboard Charts right out of the gate. Quite a feat for a group of old school Road Warriors with well over a century in the Rock ‘n’ Roll trenches.
The Rock Rapport had the good fortune once again to speak with Hall of Fame frontman SAMMY HAGAR in between CHICKENFOOT tour legs.
Ross CAT - Hello SAMMY from the Rock Rapport in Buffalo, NY, as always it’s a pleasure to speak with you, how are things in the henhouse following the tour abroad.
SAMMY - I’m good brother really good as you can imagine. Hey it’s not snowing up there in Buffalo is it (laughter)?
Ross CAT - No snow, but it hasn’t stopped raining in weeks, believe it or not we’ve even had a few hail storms this summer.
SAMMY - I’m just pulling your leg, the reason I ask is I was watching the Food Network last night because you know I love to cook, I saw ANTHONY BOURDAIN cruising all the restaurants around Buffalo during a blizzard. I thought to myself OH BOY I’m glad we’re hitting the Northeast during the summer months. I Love the people up north but I can do without the cold & snow.
Ross CAT - Congratulations on the overwhelming critical & commercial success CHICKENFOOT is enjoying with the debut record; not to mention the fact that the tour is selling out every venue on the schedule.
You took a little criticism early on about some comments & comparisons you made about the bands new music, seems you knew this thing had legs before anyone else did.
SAMMY - You know I did take a little flak about some things I said; I assure you it was out of pure excitement about this group of guys I’m playing with and the music we’re making.
It is truly awesome the response we’ve gotten all over the world. My hopes were that this band would be accepted by the public but you just never know. It’s a strange and difficult time in the music industry and we’re playing a somewhat unique style of music, so at this point in our careers the success is a bonus.
Ross CAT - It’s been a whirlwind summer thus far as the CHICKENFOOT tour is set to stomp across North America.
SAMMY - Honestly I’m having the time of my life it’s out of sight the places we’ve been playing. Man I’ll play anywhere with this band we don’t even ask how big the venues are it’s about jamming and sharing the energy with the folks in front of us.
Ross CAT - I’m sure you couldn’t help but take notice when you stepped on stage in Montreux for the Jazz Festival in front of 50,000 people, tell us about that incredible show?
SAMMY - Yeah that was an amazing festival to be a part of sharing the bill with STEELY DAN & DAVE MATTHEWS BAND. I said to DAVE MATTHEWS, “what the hell are we doing taking the stage after a DMB set”. He had a good chuckle over that, after our set I asked him if he wanted to open for us on the U.S tour. He’s a lot of fun and funny as shit, we had a few cocktails that day.
Ross CAT - That had to be quite the 4th of July, I’m sure the Swiss will never be the same.
That show almost didn’t happen as drummer CHAD SMITH spent a little time on the chopping block during the tour as he clipped a wing, but he managed to muscle through it.
How’s CHAD holding up as CHICKENFOOT prepares to hit the road for the second leg of the tour?
SAMMY - Yeah he over did it a little, he literally ripped the muscle of his shoulder, he only took a few days off and finished the tour.
Personally I’ve never played with anyone who plays as hard as CHAD does. He absolutely exhausts every song that we play, at the end of each song it’s like WHEW lets catch our breath. Because of the way CHAD plays we take every song to it’s limit, its all about keeping up with SMITH.
I was talking to the longtime respected Bay area critic Joel Selvin after our show at the Fillmore, he told me the only guy he’s ever heard play as hard & loud as CHAD was KEITH MOON.
Ross CAT - Another cool date coming up on the summer tour is a free show at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame on August 15th.
Tell us what special meaning that gig will have for yourself & MICHAEL ANTHONY being forever enshrined in Cleveland for your contributions with VAN HALEN.
SAMMY - Yeah that is pretty awesome, I Love the fact that we get to go back, not just to play but to support the Hall. It’s no secret how proud MIKE & I are to be members, in my humbled opinion you’d think our other band mates would be in there as well for what they’ve accomplished in their careers.
Ross CAT - The Sound Academy show this week will be your second visit to Toronto. I was one of the fortunate 500 folks to see the “Road Test Tour” at the Mod Club in May.
Rumor has it that you and CHAD got tangled up with RUSH guitarist ALEX LIFESON the night before and tore up the town.
SAMMY - Hey man lets clear that up right hear & now, I blame ALEX for that night; it was my tequila but that boy gave us hometown tour I won’t soon forget, he can throw down with the best of them.
Ross CAT - Was there any discussion about ALEX taking the stage with CHICKENFOOT that night for a song or two?
SAMMY - No, we’re really trying to focus on the CHICKENFOOT material on this first tour. Every place that we played there were world class musicians & friends. Man we had some of the best shredders on the planet in the house like ALEX, BRIAN MAY & STEVE LUKATHER comin’ out to the shows. I told every one of those guys they have an open invitation to come to CABO and jam.
Ross CAT - Lets talk about the new record; you continue to defy nature with your throat thrashing vocals, holding nothing back on tracks like “Oh Yeah” & “Runnin Out”, is there something in that CABO WABO Tequila keeping those pipes polished?
SAMMY - Don’t ask me it’s some kind of miracle, I don’t smoke cigarettes so that certainly has helped preserve my voice. Beyond that I think I break every rule there is for a singer. I drink, I party, I Yell & Scream, I don’t warm up properly and more often then not I’m sleep deprived, there isn’t much that I don’t do that’s for sure.
Just the other day SATCH & I were talking about changing up the encore a little for this leg of the tour, maybe putting “Heavy Metal” in place of “Bad Motor Scooter”. As JOE was listening to it on the computer I started to sing along with it, he looked over at me and said how the fuck do you still sound the same as you did in 1981.
So far, knock on wood, I can still hit all the notes, I feel extremely fortunate in that respect.
Ross CAT - Now that the CHICKENFOOT tour is in full flight did you find the “Road Test” club rehearsal shows beneficial to both the band and the new songs?
SAMMY - I’m glad you asked that because it was one of the smartest things I’ve ever done as an artist in my career. If we would have just jumped into a bigger venue it really could have been difficult.
The production of this show needed to be built from the ground up, from sound & lights to the performance of the songs. These smaller gigs afforded everyone involved the opportunity to see what this band is all about and were we wanted to take the songs in a live setting.
We started playing just the album and a few encores which was about 75 minutes of material in the first few “Road Test” shows; at the end of those club dates we were clocking in at just under 2 hours with the same amount of material. Those shows really gave us the chance to get our feet under us allowing us to focus on jamming & stretching out the songs in the right places.
Ross CAT - You’ve obviously survived some tenacious times through your VAN HALEN years, tell us how this group of accomplished musicians manage the ego friendly environment that is apparent on stage.
SAMMY - I’m just hoping that’s somewhere I never have to go again. When I joined VAN HALEN the ego thing wasn’t an issue, they had just finished with that shit with the previous singer.
When I joined the band everyone was happy, it was the polar opposite of what they’d been dealing with. It really was a fantastic time in my life & career. For some reason after a decade of success and what I thought was a lifelong friendship someone’s ego got in the way and it wasn’t mine.
You know Ross, things happen within a band just like any other relationship because your dealing with more then one personality.
I really don’t see that happening with CHICKENFOOT, the older you get you realize that you have to check your ego at the door if you want to be involved in a band of this caliber. For me to be able to play with MIKE again at this level and to be welcomed with open arms as a singer/songwriter by guys like JOE SATRIANI & CHAD SMITH is truly something I treasure at this stage of my career.
Ross CAT - Both yourself and JOE have enjoyed tremendous success in your respective solo careers, talk about what it’s like joining forces with someone like SATCH in writing new songs.
SAMMY - When we started to work on this project we wanted to fuse the strengths that each of us bring to the table as a musician, we tried not to change each others style.
With CHICKENFOOT, JOE still writes the same kind of music but he doesn’t have to worry about the melody & chorus or the lyrics, I can take that off his plate. He can come up with the bare bones of each song and I try to fill in the pieces. It’s a great relationship, after so many years of being solo artists its really a relief to share the process with someone whose had the same experience of being responsible for every single detail that goes into making new music.
I really love were this thing has taken us, I knew it was something special when he was playing the riff in “Sexy Little Thing” and I just started to sing the lyrics.
As an artist its creative moments like those that are inspirational, to me these new songs have the magic of PLANT/PAGE, JAGGAR/RICHARDS hell even EDDIE & SAMMY.
Ross CAT - With the CHICKENFOOT shows selling out in every market will the less fortunate fans that didn’t get tickets have the opportunity to see these performances on DVD in the future?
SAMMY - Absolutely, we’ve recorded just about every step of the way. We filmed the Montreux show as well as another great gig at the Fillmore in San Francisco. I believe there’s a handful of shows set for filming on the rest of the summer tour as well.
When this thing is done it’s going to be really cool were not just recording one show, we’re taking songs from a number of different places to try and bring that CHICKENFOOT vibe right into your living room.
FOOT NOTE: As always the Rock Rapport would like to Thank SAMMY HAGAR for his valuable time. We would also like to Thank Jessica Erskine from Rogers & Cowan for taking care of the Rock Rapport once again.

August 23rd, 2009 at 3:13 pm
For Sammy to say the he had no ego kind of implies that he does have an ego, doesn’t it?
August 23rd, 2009 at 3:22 pm

Sign me up, i’m in. Saw ‘em in London and they were beyond amazing - and Sammy caught a snare drum in the bonce !! I’m sitting here with a glass of vino, an acoustic guitar and a DVD of a ‘Thunder’ gig from ‘98. Rock ‘n roll baby, that’s what it’s all about.

August 23rd, 2009 at 4:00 pm
seen them live too distorted! satch seems sloppy to me. just my 2 cents.
August 23rd, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Satch sloppy ? Not a fuckin’ chance bro !! Seen the guy live many a time; never sloppy ‘cos he’s pretty much sober. Damn talented dude - taught Steve Vai, Alex Skolnick and Kirk Hammett for god’s sake !!!
VH ‘04 - now that was sloppy……
Bring on the war……
Ed
August 23rd, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Seen Sammy 7 times over the years 4 of which were with Van Halen including the `04 reunion tour. That show was the worst of them, you could tell the magic wasn’t there.
Sammy’s all about having a good time and that shows in Chickenfoots Music.
August 23rd, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Maybe with the Chickenfoot DVD due out soon, we will get something from the VH camp. OH wait, has hell actually froze over yet????? Then, maybe we won’t get anything from
VH and they will leave us hanging and Sammy and Mike will continue to rock and VH will continue to not do shit.
August 23rd, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Steve, you can have your 2 cents back, get a clue with it!! The only thing sloppy that night was you old lady in the parking lot!!!!
August 23rd, 2009 at 5:29 pm
You know every time a positive story is posted, assholes like Steve start the negative bullshit. Who fucking cares what you negative ass clowns think, you deserve to get fucking slammed verbally!!! If you don’t like Chickenfoot fine, but let the others enjoy the postive news - everyone is tired of all the negative bullshit! I apologize to my fellow Foot fan’s for my rude behavior. It was not my intention to help ruin a positive story! I just get tired of the unnecessary negative bullshit!!!!
August 23rd, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Stevie Vai..
Just doesn’t get it.
Satch is good. But he is no Ed.
Going tmorrow night.
Report back forthcoming.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:01 pm
Fans i apologize to you Sammy fans. That doesnt make me any better or worse then all the neg bashing Sammy fans do to Ed! Dude i dont recall saying Ed wasnt in 04? So there you go! No room for a real Van Halen fan!
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Right with you Steve! They have bashed Ed for years!
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:06 pm
SCAR, I agree, the negativity sucks. However, seems like most of the CF fans on this thread use it as a platform to rip on Ed or the VH camp. The first two posts on here go out of their way to knock VH. negativity goes both ways unfortunately.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:21 pm
And your right Steve, all the idiots that slam EVH are assholes too!!! It would be nice to end all of the negative bullshit!!! You would think that people come to this site to celebrate everything Van Halen (past and present), but that isn’t the case. They slam EVH, or slam Sammy, or slam Mikey, hell they even slam Wolfie. I guess it gives those little prick’s a boner or something.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:25 pm
Interesting? Sam say’s, “to me these new songs have the magic of PLANT/PAGE, JAGGAR/RICHARDS hell even EDDIE & SAMMY.”
Eddie & Sammy? What?! He hasn’t heard of Eddie & Dave?!!
It’s kind of strange that Sam names Plant/Page & Jagger/Richards (all are the originals!) yet instead of naming Eddie/Dave (they are the original VH!) he instead show’s his contempt for Van Halen and disrespect for Dave and names himself & Eddie just to please his fat ego!!
Remember when he first joined Van Halen? He spoke of how he had every Van Halen album (he was a fan!), that he was so mesmerized by Eddie’s musical genius and how he spoke of Alex’s drumming ‘as the most powerful drummer he has ever played with’? My, my, my how bitterness and jealousy have changed the poor (rich!) old man Sam!! Then again Sam has no respect but only for his ego & Tequila. Everything he says is contrived and manipulated to suck in most of his followers. This is Sam at his cringe worth best!!!
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:00 pm
who cares ? Scar u sound like a Girl !!!!
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Nice try Gomer, but no cigar!!! You disappoint me stew-pid, you can do better than that!!!
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:27 pm
The correct spelling of the word is STUPID !!!!!!!
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:33 pm
Figure it out professor walteR - DUH!
August 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Before this war of words gets out of hand, I think it’s important to note that it is not ‘Sammy’ or ‘Chickenfoot’ fans that are dissing Ed on this forum. It’s Van Halen fans.
A lot of VH fans are feeling really jibbed. We waited over 20 years for our favourite band to reunite and when it finally happend it was all so low key. Hardly any press or interviews, no live disc or DVD ( even tho they filmed one)and the band never even left north America.
Van Halen has millions of fans around the world who only got to see this reunion through grainy bootleg clips on youtube. So when people on this forum say that ‘chickenfoot is doing what van halen should be doing’, it is because they WISH Van Halen would do what chickenfoot have done, release behind the scenes clips, do interviews, play the talk shows, Release DVD’s and make a hard rocking new record that pleases the fans and charts well.
August 23rd, 2009 at 11:00 pm
It’s not about who’s better or worse. It isn’t like its a big competition. It’s just two bands that have a few common threads in em. Thats it. In all honesty, I couldn’t care less about “Chickenfoot”. I think its just an all-star publicity stunt. Im a Van Halen fan, through and through. YES, that means I like Roth, I like Van “Hagar”, and I atleast tolerated Cherone. lol
Thats muh 2 cents!
:))
August 23rd, 2009 at 11:08 pm
…. OH! And wolfie is ok with me.
August 23rd, 2009 at 11:17 pm
SCAR: Always good to see you and a few others holding the flying VH high like you do.
Ludwig: Why don’t you go do what you do best and play the fuckin’ skin flute. VH with Dave will always be my favorite and many or most of the fans here - that’s not an argument, just a fact. I’m 40 and I’ve seen VH with Dave back in the day (my first concert - a life changing experience), with Sammy many times since, and again with Dave on the reunion tour. As much as I love Dave, Sammy has always showed more grace and humbleness towards what we all consider so sacred. Has Dave? Ummm…not so much.. Sammy has earned a little bit of his ego, and he still tries not to be a dick. Some of us here love Van Halen version # one and always will be loyal to that version. But we have room in our heart and mind and soul for the Sammy years and just maybe, even a little bit of room for the Gary “months”… I was devastated when VH and Dave broke up - and as pathetic as that sounds I am sure there are fans here that can relate. I saw VH with Sammy on the 5150 tour and I was open-minded and honest enough to give Sammy the credit he earned. Thank God it was Sammy and no one else that came into the picture. Things might have been devastatingly different for the Mighty Van Halen if it weren’t for Sammy. I don’t think there was and ever could be a person on the planet that could have had the balls to come in at that moment after Dave - besides Sammy. We all owe him respect for stepping in holding the VH torch high and proud. Thankfully Eddie didn’t have his way and spit out that supposed all star VH shit album with Phil Collins etc. Think about it. Seriously.
It was destiny for Dave to be there when VH1 to 1984 was released - and magic times for all of us. There’s nothing like the original, but Sammy fucking kicked ass when 5150 came out all the way up to Balance- and he never disappointed live. Are you new to Van Halen and don’t have fucking clue? Go back in time and history and check for yourself. Listen to any bootleg (literally any bootleg) of Dave live and you will hear the same shit over and over. “I’m gonna fuck your girlfriend…I forgot the lines…look at all the people here tonight!” All good and entertaining- if it was your first concert - but you’d hear that at every show. I gained a lot of respect for Dave on the reunion tour when he seemed genuinely humble and appreciative of the history that he was a part of – the raps were probably a part of every show but they seemed genuine - the first time I’ve really felt he was talking from his heart. Where is the Dave of old now??? Really - I’m asking all Dave fans…where is he now? The old Dave would drop us a post card to say hi. I’m sure Dave is doing alright and enjoying life…but he’s not going to do anything to piss off Eddie - thus - we hear nothing from Dave. Ironic. We all thought Dave was the reason Van Halen broke up. Now we suspect someone else… Even with that said – I’ll still be the first in line if/when a new Van Halen album is released.
So go rag on Sammy some more Ludwig. Seems like you will always be in good company since there are always dickheads like yourself looking to chime in with their original-thinking Dave is better and Sammy isn’t input. This debate will rage on after all of us and the band members are all gone. I choose to enjoy all of the music. You can choose to hate and continue to play your interpretation of Eruption on the skin flute. Too bad you can’t lighten up and enjoy life. You and all the other Sammy and Chickenfoot bashers need vagina.
August 23rd, 2009 at 11:51 pm
Ive said this before, why the hell are Chickenfoot on a Van Halen website????
Just because Mike and Sammy are two EX members of a real supergroup, buts that what they are EX, now whos living in the past?
August 24th, 2009 at 12:29 am
Ludwig. That’s both the funniest and most idiotic post I’ve read on this website.
August 24th, 2009 at 1:54 am
Rock on sammy
August 24th, 2009 at 3:17 am
well, well
to avoid the fry i will just say one thing
D V D.
he.he.
August 24th, 2009 at 3:30 am
So constantly ragging on Sammy just out of pure hate is the same as expressing dissatisfaction at being strung along by Eddie for the last twelve or whatever it is years?
August 24th, 2009 at 5:37 am
I agree! LONG LIVE DAVE!!!!!!!
August 24th, 2009 at 5:59 am
VH 2004 - DVD…….. (where?)
VH 2007-08 - DVD ……..(where?)
August 24th, 2009 at 6:01 am
Anyone who sees Chickenfoot would never speak negatively about the experience. I’ve had the pleasure and it leaves you feeling amazing about musicianship, cameraderie, and everything else that great bands can do for you.
I don’t quite get the negativity though. If you like Chickenfoot then a concert DVD is great news. If you don’t like them…that’s okay too. However, do you go on Lady GaGa’s website or some other lame act to bitch about their forthcoming release too?
Bring it on, and if it makes you happy, then I’m happy for you. If it makes you want to bitch and complain then I really can’t relate to that at all.
Have a great day everyone!!
Pete
August 24th, 2009 at 6:56 am
Great interview. I’m glad Ross asked for more detail about CF’s night out with Alex Lifeson!
August 24th, 2009 at 7:53 am
From above:
“Satch is good. But he is no Ed.”
Oh please get over yourself…Satch is everything Ed should be today. EVH was great in his day but I think his ship sailed long ago and that sailing was fueled by years of addiction. I will only reverse my opinion when he does as Sammy did long ago…make some new music preferably without DLR or Sammy Hagar. The VH bros need to step out and take another risk. Form their own supergroup or something. But please lets just make it new and not rehash all former glory of the past. VH with DLR = Boring, VH with Sammy Hagar = Not as boring but still worn out.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Why the fuck would Sammy Hagar, ex-singer of Van Halen, suggest that his new band has the magic of Eddie and Dave? What sort of moron would say that?
“Hey baby, this relationship is going pretty well…I’d even say it has the magic of me and my ex-wife”.
What the hell. That is so idiotic its unreal.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:22 am
scowboy nailed it…but i still wanna hear new stuff from dave and ed.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:38 am
Karl, just because I don’t like Sammy’s voice or writing doesn’t mean I hate him. I give Sam a LOT of credit for reshaping the VH sound when Dave left. They are completely different people and a singer defines the band, like it or not. He had to change the sound to reflect who he is. While I respect that, I just didn’t care for the music. Simple as that. It isn’t personal, but you want it to be. I just think Dreams and Right Now is really bad music. If people love it, that’s great, but don’t tell me it’s because I hate Sammy.
I just don’t care what Chickenfoot does because I don’t get anything from the music. I hope they put out 100 cds and plenty of live DVDs for the fans. It doesn’t make any difference to me. Good for them. But I agree with you that constant negativity for the sake of being negative isn’t cool.
August 24th, 2009 at 9:56 am
Skutch, not pointing the finger at you or anyone else in particular. There’s no need to point out those that just don’t like Sammy for no other reason than they don’t like Sammy. Just pointing out that there’s a big difference between not liking Sammy just ‘because’ and being pissed at being strung along by Ed for over a decade. For the record, I like both.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:20 am
2010 CF II - Fowl Weather VH - chirp, chirp, chirp
2011 CF III - The Game is a Foot VH - chirp, chirp, chirp

Sigh.
I just want some new music.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:25 am

Cool! The old SCAR is back!
In the past I loved reading Scars posts here. Great fun. That was until he changed into Joel Osteen II.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
What a bunch of JADED fuckers.Jeff just Proved what R&R is all about. My 1st concert was “eat`m&smile,Tesla opened up(Jan86)Springfield coluseum,”festival seating”-which meant get there as early as possible&run like hell to the stage.
While waiting in line(on that Frozen January nite)Some “Dork”

Everyone in line was shouting insults at the dude.
Then he walked up to the front doors(bike in hand)and proceeded to enter the very building we were Freezing our “collective asses off”to get into.MY girlfriend(at the time)
stopped him”Dead in his tracks”&said”Are you here to see
DAVIDLEEROTH??-to which he lowered his sunglasses&replied
“BABE,I AM DAVIDLEEROTH!!!”And it WAS.I was 16 at the time,
-Unfortuneatly to “young”to see the 1984 tour-still haven`t forgiven my parents for that one:)I just can`t understand the Devout VNHGR fans reasoning behind never missing an opportunity to shit on=VH=`s future.90%of you regard”Best of Both Worlds”as your life`s”mantra”-Now you`ve got it,(viaCKNFT).And yet you Still bitch&moan.
It`s as if someone threw you a life preserver while you were
drowning,BUT”bitch”about the “color” of the life

August 24th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
RICK…Sammy didn’t compare the magic in CF to “Eddie & Dave”, he compared it to “Eddie & Sammy”.
I don’t understand the negativity of some people, but at least be correct.
August 24th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
ed could make a solo album very easily
as for sammy he had the balls to continue van halen and make the band in his image
it was his band and ed was the star or they were co-stars
it let edward shine, he was the household name
remember how big they were in 1991!?
as for dlr he could not stand the drinking or whatever (imagine having to deal with a drunkin alex, ed and mike) and thought he was big enough to make it on his own
he was for 3 albums and then his luck and hair fell out!
as for sammy he has been busy as ever since van halen and
i really like the foot , 10 times better than his solo stuff
sammy is a lot better in a band
be it montrose, vh or chickenfoot
those are 3 killer groups
montrose, 5150 and chickenfoot are all
really really good albums
as for ed and company expect the worse
hope for the best
at least a new tour is in the works!
shit if were business as usual dlr would have been fired by now so this is baby steps people
oh and if you hate sammy so much imagine van halen with
a female lead singer! yeah ed wanted to do that to
he needs to be reigned in
first dave did in
then sammy and their manager
once ed took over the thing imploded
sam earned his ego
he and ted nugent are the godfathers of hard rock!
as for what you will look like and be doing in your fricking 60’s - not what sammy does thats for sure!!!
a role model for coolness. and look at the band black sabb after ozzy sure it worked out with dio for awhile so are go going to blame dio for coninuing a great band no, and you dont blame sammy either.
people are upset that van hagar was successful
the only band ever to hire a second singer and change its style (it already happened on half of 1984- so dont blame sammy, blame ed) and be successful
find a band that did that. not. see. sammy wins.

skutch, why don’t you guys get it? eddie writes the music, the singers write the lyrics. ed said it himself. and another thing, the music on 5150 was written before sammy joined the band. i’ve seen interviews where eddie said that when sammy sang dreams it made his hair standup. dave could never sing a song like dreams. dave was the best at what he did sing. and one more thing, EDDIE asked sammy to join VH. take it out on him.

Chickenfoot DVD vey cool, but a Van Halen DVD from the last concert would be priceless. Where is DLR these days?
August 25th, 2009 at 6:31 am
Of course Chickenfoot was really pushing , club shows , dvd , late night shows , cuz they have to . Sam said himself that they play a little off mainstream music . Glad they made the album , and I to am thankful for helping to keep Van Halen alive . This new album of theres is musicaly talented but ok at best . Van Halen , on the other hand , does not need to push themselves so hard and have always been traditionaly secretive !!! Its always been part of there allure fellas . Van halen has also put out a couple not so popular albums ; however , this time they are gonna blow the fuck out of everyone . Daves first album with the band in years , and Eddie wanting to pave the way for wolfies career . So anyway , if ya didnt get to see Van Halen live this last time out and your complaining then get a fuckn job , get off your ass , and get a ticket !!

50yr old, I know Ed asked Sam to join. They were both getting their Lambo’s fixed. yeah yeah yeah. What’s your point? It makes no difference to me who wrote the songs. I’m not going to say I think Best of Both Worlds is a good song when I don’t. There’s a reason why he never presented those songs when Dave was in the band. Dave doesn’t think they are good either. BUT, I regress. It isn’t a competition. Like what you like. It makes no difference either way. I’m not even sure what we are arguing here.

WTF!!!:
WTF??? “Van Halen, on the other hand, does not need to push themselves so hard.”
Perhaps but don’t you think waiting 11 + years to put out new music is taking it a bit far.

I am a big Van Halen fan and now I am a Chickenfoot fan. Egos and substances have always ruined great bands and hopefully the bad blood will be put away and result in great music for years to come.

SKUTCH…always a pleasure.
PHILLSTER…cool story about meeting Dave!
Chickenfoot DVD? Awesome - I can’t wait.
Why would anyone be so upset about them releasing a DVD? Does Britney Spears latest release make you upset too?
Lighten up everyone. If you like it, buy it. If you don’t like it, for whatever reason, ignore it. Do you post angry messages about every new release you don’t like?
Breathe in the love everyone…(;>)
Have a good one,
Pete

This whole argument of which version of Van Halen is really a subjective argument!!! There is no right or wrong answer,It’s almost asking “do you like pepperoni on your pizza or just cheese” Both incarnations were great!!!! When in 1984/85 the great split happened i was devastated, but i liked dave’s solo shtick and when i heard on the glorious afternoon that a man named sammy hagar was taking over the Vh front role i immediatly went through my old cassette tapes to find anything with this hagar on it!!! FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH -i thought what a fit this just might work-hence 5150 and BINGO pure raw energy sort of a Van Halen record except for now it was electric and full of adrenaline and power sort of 1984 turned up to freakin 10!!!
My whole point is i was turned onto hagar and roth’s solo stuff so instead of being negative look at it that now weve got several groups to enjoy and i count chickenfoot and the old/new vh among that category. If only ed would get roth and the other family clan back into the studio we just might have something to compare it to!!!

As far as when is VH gonna release a dvd of the reunion tour?
I say we should see it around the holidays this year….
If not, then thats just not a good sign.
The tour ended in 2007.
iIt shouldnt take almost 3 years to wait for that.
Ridiculous.

Guys:
Let’s be honest here, Van Halen is a distant memory of a band. 24 years ago, a guy named Sammy Hagar joined because Dave was TOO BIG to stay in it. The problem I have is that the so called “fans” think Dave made Van Halen. Sorry to sound negative, but he didn’t. 4 guys made that band and they ruled the world. A world they ruined with stupidity and bad decisions. Sammy came into Van Halen with nothing to lose and everything to gain. See the problem here is that this is a Chickenfoot article and it turns into a debate about Van Halen. Sammy is in the Hall of Fame because of Van Halen. He was in the band longer than Roth and made as many albums. What Sammy had to endure for over a decade by being the guy who replaced Roth and doing it successfully is something that needs to be applauded. 4 #1 albums says alot to me guys.Singing the songs Eddie wanted him to sing and doing it for the fans. Sammy may sound bitter at times towards Van Halen, but do you blame him? Seriously here though, I’ve seen Chickenfoot and they rock hard! I’ve seen Van Halen 5 times, seen Dave, and seen Sammy numerous times and to be honest, Sammy is a better performer and singer! Dave lived off of being Dave, not being a singer or a musician. I read on here all the time that Sammy’s lyrics blow, but does Dave really write a better song? I mean really, what is a Panama? You don’t care about what Panama means because the music makes it sound good! 5150 is a great song and it showed just how much Eddie loved Sammy in Van Halen. That song would not fit in with Dave. Eddie wanted to take Van Halen in a different direction and sorry to say this, but Sammy was the man for the job. All the bitching on here just shows that an opinion and your time is wasted.
I love all versions of Van Halen except for Mike being gone, but then who would be in Chickenfoot? These guys have earned the right to be on here or any other site baring the name Van Halen because it’s part of their history. But as a fan, I wonder why Eddie doesn’t deliver anymore? A decade of obscurity is not good and getting clean is the right way, but Eddie now needs to make an album, do a tour, and bury the hatchet with Sammy and Mike and we as fans would move on and respect Van Halen again now. Not their past, because I respect all of it, but here in the now. Keep Chickenfoot separate from Van Halen, and keep Dave separate from Sammy. 2 different brands that both delivered!

I love it!
