Eddie Van Halen Picks the Essential Van Halen Songs

eddie-van-halen-vegas

With no official word from Activision on the track list for the upcoming ‘Guitar Hero: Van Halen’ game, the Web is buzzing with rumors. While Spinner can’t confirm any of them, we’re pretty sure tracks like ‘Spanish Fly,’ ‘Eruption’ and ‘Runnin’ With The Devil’ will be included. What makes us so confident? We heard it from the guitar hero himself, Eddie Van Halen.

When Spinner spoke with Eddie earlier this year, we asked him to pick some of the essential Van Halen tunes, the ones he would suggest to budding VH fans. “I think ‘Eruption’ is one. ‘Spanish Fly,’ just because it’s the same thing except it sounds like Segovia doing something, it’s on a Flamenco guitar. I wish somebody would take that technique and do something with it,” he says laughing. “I had no idea it would trip people out to the point that it did.”

As one would imagine of a guy who’s written some of the most memorable riffs in all of rock over, narrowing the list down was tough, so he turned to the audience to help with the selection process. “To pick songs, I can only go by what the audience response is, like say ‘Runnin’ With the Devil.’ To the day I die, we’ll have to play that because that’s what people want to hear, and ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,’ ‘Unchained’ and ‘Jump.’ There’s all kinds of stuff.”

These are all songs that of course almost have to be on a game celebrating the VH legacy, but what about some dark horses that could make it? “I love ‘Girl Gone Bad,’” he says. “One of my favorite songs of ours is ‘Drop Dead Legs.’ Whether it’s a hit or not, I love that song. Probably the more obscure stuff, like Wolfie [his son/bassist Wolfgang Van Halen] loves ‘Romeo Delight.’ I do too.”

So there you have it, kids. The best of Van Halen from the man himself.

  • MICAL VEE

You can put any vh song from the dave era on guitar hero and not go wrong!!!!!!!!! ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bluesbro

Ho hum … wake me up when there is some new material.

  • Darren from Brooklyn

It thrills me to no end to know that great minds think a like. Any VH song with Dave singing is always first choice. Long live the mighty Van Halen w/DLR.

  • Hampus

These are Eddies pick for the guitar hero game though? Or are these his favorites of all Van Halen songs, including van gaygar?

  • Ro

this sounds absolutely amazing.. i dont play guitar hero myself because i suck, i only play real guitar lol.. but i believe guitar hero is a great source for people to recognize the best music there is… so if we are giving this to the people, shouldn’t this guitar hero have sammy hagar songs as well?.. music with sammy is EXCELLENT.. anyway i believe this guitar hero should contain songs like: dreams, summer nights, judgement day, poundcake, mine all mine, cabo wabo, 5150, runaround, etc.. and some of this songs have better guitar parts than songs with DLR…

  • Dave from Tasmania

Drop dead legs was the first VH song that hooked me in. Love that slick cool bend in the main riff and that escalating run at the bridge. Wish the run didn’t hurt so much to play! Thanks for all the great riffs Ed!

  • Cam Winston

“You can put any vh song from the dave era on guitar hero and not go wrong!!!!!!!!! “,/i>

I’ll wait, til your love comes down…..

  • Cam Winston

    Close tag… Sorry.

  • Andrew

Wonder if they will put out an Eddie guitar for the game.

  • BigDawg

It is the songs for the game, and that is why no mention of Sammy era tunes.

  • Johnny

If it aint live it aint shit! The only real game is LIVE KICK ASS ROCK AND ROLL!

  • Ludwig

IMO Girl Gone Bad and Drop Dead Legs are close to the stand out songs on 1984. And for King Edward to say that those two songs are one of his favourite’s is awesome!!! I really hope they can play songs like those (and other classic’s) for the next tour that they haven’t done since they were released. I wouldn’t mind at all if they leave out songs like Panama or Aint Talkin About Love, they’ve done those songs forever, I wouldn’t mind at all if House Of Pain, Hear About Later, Take Your Whisky Home, The Full Bug or Outta Love….now we’re talking!!!!

  • redarrow5150

I think Mean Street is a great song along with Outta Love.

  • Van Halen is Van Halen

This is scandal. Where are Hagar’s songs?!?!?! “dreams”, “feels so good”, “poundcake”, “amsterdam” and other hits. GH sucks!

  • http://VHND JOE MARA

FIRST OFF, “VAN HAGAR DOES NOT SUCK”. DAVE IS DAVE AND VAN HALEN ROCKED HARD WITH DAVE AND WAS THE BEST METAL BAND EVER. BUT SAMMY IS A QUALITY SINGER, ESPECIALLY LIVE AND COULD MIX BOTH HARD ROCK AND MUSIC FOR THOUGHT. DON’T SELL SAMMY SHORT. TO ME, THE FIRST 3 ROTH/ VAN HALEN ALBUMS CANNOT BE BEAT AND LIKE WOLFGANG, ROMEO DELIGHT IS MY FAVORITE, I THINK? SO MANY GREAT SONGS. SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALOT MORE. TOO MANY LONG PAUSES IN THE VAN HALEN LEGACY. AND IF ANYONE OUT THERE IS LISTENING…NOT ENOUGH (BARELY ANY) DAVE ERA DVD RELEASES. I KNOW THIS STUFF EXISTS, BUT WHAT IS WITH THESE GUYS AND THEIR MANAGEMENT. TAKE A FAN SURVEY AND ASK IF THEY WANT OLD VAN HALEN VIDEO TOUR STUFF, OUTTAKES, ANYTHING. THEY ARE DOING THERE FANS A DISSERVICE AND DON’T SEEM TO CARE. AND LASTLY, I MORE THAN WELCOME WOLFGANG ABOARD, BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE PUT WOLF ON SECOND GUITAR AND KEPT MICHAEL ANTHONY. HE IS LOVED VERY MUCH BY TRUE VAN HALEN FANS AND I THINK IT WAS WRONG WHAT WAS DONE TO HIM. AS A PERSON, HE IS THE BEST OF THE BUNCH. LATER.

  • Ron

My favorite is 316 from the F.U.C.K. CD

  • Atomic Punk

The DLR era guitar work was hands down the best. Anything from Fair Warning–my favorite album of all. By the way, I was a little disappointed watching VH1 Classic last night. They are running highlights from the 83 US Festival, and yet there was no mention of or highlighting of the Mighty VH. I just wonder, does this have anything to do with Warner Bros or the VH camp? I have an old VHS tape of VH at the 83 US Festival–not a great version. Does anyone have a better quality video of that performance?

  • Jim

Can’t go wrong with any VH w/DLR song.
The reason why no Sammy songs were mentioned is because the vocals on those songs don’t stand the test of time like the Dave songs do.

  • http://www.keefermadness.com Keefer

The reason why no Sammy songs were mentioned is because the vocals on those songs don’t stand the test of time like the Dave songs do.

Come on, Jim. Only time will tell if they stand the test of time. :)

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

I thinks its cool that he mentioned “Girl gone Bad”…
That song so needs to be included…

  • David St. Hubbins

Sammy era just didn’t have much in the way of guitar songs – was much more keyboard based during that time – so I can see why that era was excluded.

  • BigK

Sammy songs didn’t have the attitude as Dave era songs.

  • John

It is absolutley absurd that the Hagar era is completely excluded from the Gutar Hero Game. Every album hit number 1 on the charts during that time. I know people have their preference and right now that is definitley leaning towards the Roth era. There are plenty of fans that love both the Roth and Hagar eras and are getting cheated.

  • Karl

And so the unacceptable outlaw madness that is rock and roll ends up on a self at Toy R Us…

  • FAMAC

They left the Sammy tunes off because they want people to play the game. Its a repetative game, so it would suck to have to hear Dreams over and over. I can’t even take it once anymore.

  • Kimberly

Love Romeo Delight as well and would LOVE to see some of Fair Warning on the game. I personally would rather see Dave era songs because I agree that they just hit harder and have more attitude/feeling. Just my personal opinion, not hating on Sammy. He does have a pretty bangin’ voice.
I would be pretty stoked if Girl Gone Bad was included…its a really really great song! <3

  • http://vhnd surfsno2008

too say van hagar was keyboard based is crazy
you have not heard the albums then
    listen to bobw
    summer nights
    amsterdam
    feelin
    judgement night
    and top of the world
and ask me if you dont hear good music!!??
    van hagar was fine
it was what ed wanted for the time and it was a good fit
as for what we got after that well its been one hell of a weird and frustrating ride
of course classic van halen was the best !!
    just like ac/dc and sabbath
    no brainer
but van hagar was damn good.

  • redarrow5150

Girl Gone Bad could just be jamming between Alex & Eddie and forget the lyrics. That song kicks ass with the playing of those two.

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

    Atomic punk:

I have the same vhs copy you do! LOL!
Been trying myself to find a good quality version myself.
I have no clue why the US FEST has not been released on dvd yet.
It’s destined to be a triple disc special edition.
I just dont get why they dont release these classic live shows! Same with old school aerosmith!
This was quality stuff and its just overlooked.
Then again..you never know. Could be in the works as i write this…
Hey..i’m the king of wishful thinking! ;)

  • Skutch

Well put Karl. I like it.

House of Pain is my favorite, or Hear About It Later.

  • RA 8 1 2

Sammy Era is not on because Sammy and Mike are excluded from the game. This is all complete Bullshit. As I agree with some of you that the Dave songs are rockin, etc and yes, so many of them should be included in the game, Romeo Delight, Girl Gone Bad, 2 of my favorite Dave songs, almost half of Van Hales catalog is with Sammy and they are ignoring it? Its Bullshit! It just seems that the Van Halen camp is doing with the Sammy era like they do with the Gary era and that is completely ignoring the fact that it existed! I know that the Hard core Dave fans only want Dave songs which is understandable but true fans want everything. There maybe fans out there more familiar with Sammy tunes such as the pop hits rather than Dave era. They are shutting out a section of the fan base. Im pretty sure that if there were Sammy songs included the die hard Dave fans would still buy the program just as they did buy the albums when Sammy joined. If does not behoove VH to dismiss Sammy Era. Gary era, another story, 1 album only. There are many cool Sammy songs which can be included like Good Enough, Summer Nights, 5150, Cabo, Finish What Ya Started, etc. I play guitar and have noticed that some of the Sammy era shit is harder to play then the Dave stuff. Anyone else who plays feel this? I am a fan to the core. “Complete” fan. Love Dave, Love Sammy, not thrilled about Gary but respected his time in VH. Pretty disappointed about Mike being axed especially from the last tour, where as I think he should of played and then given walking papers and let Wolf join in 2009-2001, whatever. But I am over it. I will buy their new album with Wolf (If or Whenever this may be) and I will go to the shows. But as a fan, I am just very disappointed with the whole VH camp with the dismissing of the Sammy era. ALMOST HALF THEIR CATALOG!

  • Brad

Well I hope that “I’m The One” makes this list as this barnburner is tops on my list….and some of the other ‘B’ side stuff makes it too; though it looks like the music chosen will probably be from the corporate-think-tank top 40 lists…..much like U.S. military psych-ops warfare in 3rd world nations (Panama, etc.) proceeds – playing the same songs over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Hey wait a minute….they do that here in the U.S.

  • Brad

    Eruption
    Take Your Whiskey Home

    The Full Bug
    Atomic Punk
    Mean Streets….

  • RickieVanWhalen

Yes – hear about it later! People will have a rip with eruption and spanish fly! But the game will be based on popular songs, thus Hot for Teacher will dominate (it is very easy to play on a “real guitar”).

As I have said before, EVH’s most difficult and tasty work for real guitar playing can be found on Fair Warning. You will never see anybody play “one foot out the door”. You can find alot of good stuff on youtube. You will never see anybody play that tune. Absolutely drop dead difficult. I have the notes, but will never get the speed and phrasing. I think it is his greatest moment on guitar.

  • Marvin

I hope they play brown eye girl. Its real popular at the bars right now.

  • fiestared

finally, dave alexander mentions aftershock!!!!!, that song is fucking nasty :D

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

Dont worry sammy fans…thats why you have chickenfoot!

  • ROB5150

I disagree that now Van Halen have removed the entire Sammy-era, including in their official site! With Sammy they became a very successful band in the world, nobody can deny it!

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

Anyone who’s a diehard rock fan will tell you:

The roth era rocked the hardest…period.
All 6 of those classic albums have some of the most incredible and memorable guitar riffs ever.

Not to start any trouble around here but when sam joined the group it was like classic VH was erased from history. Not a t shirt or poster could be found unless it was van hagar. I sat through this ridiculous bullshit for over 20 years so the sammy fans that are bitchin’ can suck it ok?
The band is more recognized now with their orginal singer due to the reunion tour and the fact that people MISS the old songs…..shit……not to mention their highest grossing tour.
Sammy had his time and i’m sure eventually all the van hagar fans will be treated with the version of THOSE songs.
But for now let us dave era fans enjoy knowing that for once we get to enjoy the attention being where it should have always been….the “roots” of Van Halen.

  • chris b.

Here’s the deal. Ed’s in All-Dave mode. He’s been in All-Dave mode since before Gary Cherone joined up. Sammy got a bad break for writing love songs (at Ed’s request, I’m sure). It’s too bad, but that’s how it is.

  • chris b.

    RA812:
Couldn’t agree more. I began my VH journey with For Unlawful…. I had to go back to buy every record since then. I even want the unreleased stuff from their demo tapes. Anyway, I do object to the Sammy-snuffing. I’m just glad he and Mike are happier now than when they were in VH. Mikey deserves a great band like Chickenfoot.

  • Jor-L5150

    what 812 up there said…

DAVE is the singer – NOW , so the tracks will be dave-era songs. thats it. thats why , and thats consistant with ed .

if this game had come out in the late-80′s /90′s , then it would be VERY heavy on van hagar and , maybe some dave-era tracks ( but probably the audio-vocal source would have been samme singing live ) .

if it had come out in 97-99 it would have been a even mix , with some VH3 tracks and gary vocals .

  • Joe

    Women In Love!

Understated, cool guitar work, nice DLR vocals and classic M.A. backing vocals.

  • Skutch

Again with the “true fans” crap. Why should I be obligated to like the Sammy or even the Gary era stuff to be a “true fan”? Where is this stated in the “true fan” qualifications? Give me a break already. EVEN GARY doesn’t like VH3!

  • Garrett

I doubt the Van Halen camp had much say in what “era” was represented in the video game…Probably the folks at Activision who decided…I read somewhere that they only use “active members” in the games, hence Wolfie over Mike…probably explains the Dave era track list too. (Great choice guys!!! haha)

  • http://none J5149.5

girl gone bad and take your whisky home are awesome.top jimmy would be cool too.

  • ClubfootKolby

    Sammy rocks
