Eddie Van Halen Recovering After Hand Surgery

Here’s an exclusive from RollingStone.com:

Eddie Van Halen is said to be on the mend after undergoing surgery to treat increasing pain in his left hand.

“During the last leg of our tour, I started developing pain in my thumb and my pinky. I didn’t think much of it at the time,” the guitarist says. “It got progressively worse to the point that about three months ago I wasn’t able to play at all. My pinky and my thumb were totally locked up and felt like there was something broken.”

Van Halen sought out specialists in Düsseldorf, Germany, who initially began treating the guitarist for arthritis, but soon discovered a bone spur, twisted tendon and a cyst in the joint of his left thumb.

“They said the only way to fix it was surgery, which of course scared the shit out of me, but I was told it was the only way to fix it,” Van Halen says. “Surgery was a success, now I just have to let it heal. I am totally jazzed that they found the problem, fixed it and in about four months my hand will feel like I am 18 again. Thank God.”

Van Halen is said to be recovering nicely, having already regained his reach and full spread of his hand. He’s said to be taking his recovery slowly, however, to insure he heals properly. His rehabilitation should be complete in 4-6 months.

“In the meantime I am able to write a bit, but can not overexert my hand because it needs to heal properly,” the guitarist says.

His stitches come out in a few days, and he’s confident he’ll be able to play at maximum intensity when he completes his recovery.

  • Matt from Australia

To quote Phlip5150 – “Being a guitarist myself, I could tell something was going on with his hand. He started holding his pick differently…”
Ummmm…he holds his pick with the right hand, the story says he injured the left!

  • FAMAC

It looks like he might have bandages on his hand in the photo taken in Amsterdam.

  • Dave Bennett

Get well, heal up and take your time Edward

I can only imagine the stuff you’ll be coming up with using one hand !!!

  • Russ

I really do believe there will be a VH album. It will be released on the same day as Chickenfoot IV: Breasts and Thighs…….

  • Kimberly

Eddie feel better:( Glad to see SOME positive folk on this site.. I just hope Ed heals and gets back to work when he can. Sucks he is injured for his honeymoon too!
I don’t doubt we will get new music..these things take time and like many of you have said Eddie isn’t exactly 25 anymore…there’s gonna be a few set backs, but in the end I am certain VH will do their best to give us what we want.
Though to be honest some people on here don’t exactly deserve a tour let alone new music…:/
Love ya, Ed…hope you get well soon…”I’ll Wait” <3

  • Darren from Brooklyn

I wish you a speedy recovery. All hail the king of 6 strings and 10 fingers. All the best.

  • Skutch

Way too many negative people on this site. It still boggles my mind why people who hate Ed spent so much time on here.

    Here’s to safely healing Ed.

  • http://www.thejohngarrett.com john yuhas

that has got to be scary shit for ed– and i cant help but be selfish and think to myself” GREAT ANOTHER REASON WE WONT HAVE ANOTHER VH ALBUM FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

THAT IS SELFISH– BUT IT IS HOW I FEEL–

    DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pete

Thank heavens these are all treatable conditions. Good luck to Ed. It probably hurts like hell, but they’re all things that can be treated.

Anyone who has anything bad to say about a medical condition doesn’t need to be singled out by anyone. You’ve already singled out yourself. No class.

    Good luck Ed!

  • John

This is obviously a legitimate reason for delaying musical activity and I hope everything heals properly. Getting married and a member of the band graduating from high school, however are lame excuses for long delays. Entertainers/musicians have these types of situations all the time and continue to work.

PS- Sir Terrance. Bikram Yoga is only Yoga by name. True Yoga is the balance of both the Physical and the Spiritual.

    Namaste.

  • Thunder

    who is mike anthony?

  • Kimberly

Woahh..what!? LOL…tell me you are kidding

  • Bob

OMG imagine that a man in his 50′s who has been playing the guitar his whole life developed a problem with his hand!!!! What do you want him to play with his F’ing feet? Give the guy a break.

  • Kimberly

Bob– LOL! I know right?! Maybe we should just create a robot of Eddie that doesn’t get injured or need to get married or even live life for that matter!…that would work best apparently!
    ;)

    RESPONSE TO THE DIAMOND ONE….

Although I think 11 years is excessive as well, I think what Sammy has done (and is doing) is not the right thing either. I love Sammy with VH. However, his music since is hollow with no melody. I remember Ed & Sam during an interview saying how Sam’s voice is like another instrument in VH. I totally got that then, and definitely get it now. I still think that Sam’s voice is tight, he just doesn’t have the talent to write music to utilize it correctly. Listen to all his stuff since leaving VH. It’s lifeless except for a few tunes. I see the same dull melodies and music with Chickenfoot – except he has a better guitarist now than he had in Vic Johnson. I’d rather see 1 or 2 good albums every 4 or 5 years instead of 1+ crappy one each year (sorry Sam).

You can’t compare Ed to Satch either. They are both great in their own rites, with totally different styles and tones. I will say this though….when I listed to Satch, I tend to yawn and stare. When I listed to Ed, I find myself playing air guitar and singing along.

  • BleedingEars

“Van Halen is said to be recovering nicely, having already regained his reach and full spread of his hand.”

Especially after the headline, this was great news to hear!

  • Skutch

Since cloning is now possible, maybe they should make 2 additional eddies, one permanently stationed with Hagar and one with Cherone.

  • Line6Guy

I hope this news doesn’t effect the new line of VH striped gloves coming out? ;-)

Get well Ed..hope you do actually release another studio album…before I die.

  • Vanicionado

Skutch… CLONE THEM ALL MAN!!!! CLONE THEM ALL!!!

And start them all out together at their respective ages back in ’77.

    Whoo!!!

  • Skutch

Line6 guy, you use freakin’ LINE 6 gear. How much credibility could your statements possibly have? LOL

  • Russ Thorn

Hips, cancer, hand surgery….. all preceded by promises of a new record. I see a trend.

  • http://vhnd.net 50yr old fan

to all the true van halen fans that like all versions of of the mighty van halen that you will never be able to get through to all the kool-aid drinking sammy haters and eddie does nothing wrong fans on this sight. they think if ed gets up in the morning alive that a new album is on the way. they just can’t and won’t admit that all it’s been is talk and that something always comes up to put it off. just count the excuses. the beauty of it is is that all the talk is on this sight to prove me right. it is obvious that skutch and the other so called fans think their opinions and thoughts matter more than the rest of us. they say we are eddie bashers because we are tired of the talk and no new music. if you look at this sight close most of the same 20 or so people post on here and most like dave and sam van halen music. just for the record I HOPE I AM WRONG but i don’t think anything new will be out for a long time if at all.

  • phil

hope ed’s hand heals soon…people, remember ed is in his 50′s now and we all start to have physical problems as we grow older.

  • RickieVanWhalen

EVH with three fingers is better than all others with 5! Van Halen will return.

    Get well Ed.

  • topjimmy77

Rob; I don’t think there is ANY question that Ed still has a ton of music left in him…..
I’m also confident that we’ll be hearing some of it in the next 18 months, if that sounds like a long way off to some of you fine people, well… tough shit. The most important thing for Ed is his health & his happiness, something he has now found & was no doubt lacking in for MANY years. Cancer, divorce, raising a son, addiction to Christ only knows what, THOSE are the reasons we haven’t had any new music for eleven years. considering the state he was in – we all saw & read about the drunken public displays, the obvious poor health, the no show at the R&RHOF & resulting shambles, I for one don’t want to see THAT Ed make a return, There’s NO FUCKING WAY that Ed’s going to pass up the chance to record an album with Wolfgang, he WANTS to play with him (NOT with Michael Anthony, get over it, I have..) but it’ll happen when he’s ready. Now there’s another setback & the same people who take every opportunity to take a swipe at the guy are once again bitching about the the fact that THEY’RE going to have to go sooo long without any new music, like it’s all about you!
This is the VAN HALEN News Desk, get behind the guy or fuck off….

  • http://vhnd Emery

Ya!!!!!! Dirty Duck said it in a nut shell. Lets get some class on here. Ed you get well and God bless you and yours……

  • http://vhnd Emery

topjimmy77 Has a graet point too. Heck he`s got three points lololololol Rock on you!

  • FAMAC

He said he was still writing. That was a tip of the hat to all of the fans. Hopefully he and Dave are writing as a partnership.

That surgery isn’t that serious. Jimmy Page had similar surgery and hit the Zeppelin O2 concerts on fire.

Like Jimmy, the therapy involved is likely to promote good playing from Eddie.

  • http://yahoo Donna

Eddie you are the best!!! Get well soon!!! Love ya!!

  • Andy

Imagine being a doctor having to perform hand surgery on Edward Van Halen. Pressure?

  • Karl

    “topjimmy77 says:
Rob; I don’t think there is ANY question that Ed still has a ton of music left in him…..”

“I don’t think there is ANY question…” Really? You don’t think there is ANY question? What, after ten years of inactivity other than some really crap porno music and his last full album generally being regarded as a stinker you think all the signs are pointing in the right direction? The best we can make out of your statement is “I don’t think there is ANY question that Ed still has a ton of music left in him… but whether it will be any good is yet to be seen.”

And before you get all defensive and accuse me of bashing Ed. I’m not. Just being realistic.

And by the way, Eddie leads were others follow yet again. You can expect a steady stream of the shredders who followed in Eddie’s wake to be getting hand surgery over the next few years. You can’t spend every day of your life fretting at a billion miles an hours and not expect trouble at some point.

  • http://vhnd.com Robert

Talk about freaky, glad Ed seems to be grounded and happy. Now to all the other junk. Let’s start with Michael Anthony. First of all the guy is cool; on the 2004 tour, I was at the sound check, it was his birthday in Worcester, he was very nice and engaging with the fans, that said, here is the deal: Did we not read a few weeks ago that Billy S was offered the gig several times? The question is why? Here’s what I personally think. I read an article after the fair warning tour where Ed was talking about Mike, something to the effect of…”well he just remodeled him home, but whatever”. It was in the context of creating new music. My point is, I’m not so sure how creative and innovative Mike is musically, what input does he provide to the tunes? That is why I think he was asked to take the paycut for the 2004 tour..It’s like dude, what do you bring to the table, you play the notes I tell you to, not much more. Thus, Wolfie can be creative, we think…We will find out in 2010, no doubt

  • chris omeara

“I’ll Wait” Eddie till “Somebody Gets You A Doctor”, but I’d rather have the new album “Right Now”. But I know you’re busy with a “Beautiful Girl”, (a “Pretty Woman”), but when you’re ready, you will treat us to some new music.

“Everybody Wants Some” of your “Little Guitars” playing on their stereo systems soon. Just don’t make us listen to Spammy Gaybar again…

  • esv

There’s a new album coming, alright…Those guys will play till they drop! Heal up, Eddie! We can hardly wait to crank some new Van HALEN!!!!

  • Vanicionado

    Good point Andy, good point!!

Emery… your reference to ‘Inside’ nice!! (J-C Penny Man, J-C Penny!)

  • David Alexander, Toulca Lake

Eddie think about putting these out on your next album, from the older days. Great feel when Van Halenized:
Let Me Swim in your Ocean
Beer Drinker and Hell Raisers (Cover)

  • Troy Con

Sounds to me like a form of carpel tunnel, which would be totally understandable in Eddie’s case. Totally curable and sounds like all is well. Honestly, I’d listen to Eddie play guitar with one hand. Ok, at least like Jeff Healy played it, blind bastard.

New VH album by Jan 2010.

  • MATTHEW ZAVARDINO

I REALLY HOPE THAT EDDIE’S HAND HEALS REAL GOOD SO I CAN SEE THERE NEXT CONCERT. I’D LIKE THE GREATEST GUTAIREST AND ROCK BAND TO MAKE SOME MORE GREAT MUSIC. EDDIE IS AND ALLWAYS WILL BE THE GREATEST GUTAIREST THERE EVER WAS. AND I’D LIKE TO SEE THEM AGAIN IN CONCERT.
    FROM D.J. A TO Z

  • Hannibal

Eddie Van Halen. Amazing musician. Amazing band. Their music in many ways changed my life. But to me it seems Eddie does what he wants, when he wants, and I’d say he’s earnt that. Musicians earn t Will we see another VH album? Probably, not anytime soon though I think.

There really hasn’t been a “working” Van Halen since Balance came out. A few reunions with various singers. But you really can’t believe anything that’s said by the “band” until you’re holding the CD in your hand.

    Then its magic.

Get well Ed. The excitement and anticipation of holding a new Van Halen CD/ Album/ Casette will always be near to my heart. But I just don’t care as much anymore. Much love to those who do.

  • Rod

    I hope his hand heals…………BUT?

Why go to Germany to get it fixed? I highly doubt your going to find anyone better than the Doctors right there in LA…..UCLA Medical center? YOu have Stanford in Northern California!

I would bet the Bone spur is a result of Calcium build up from his broken hand in the early 80′s.

  • Bryan

Heres to hoping you heal quickly! And quit smoking allready!! From all of us VH fans!

  • gb69

maybe this explains why ‘little guitars’ was dropped from the last leg. would make sense that the hand would cramp up with those little frets…probably was afraid it would sound like a mess. too bad he didn’t play it on the full-size though…

  • Don

hey chris omeara, dude! wtf is wrong w/ you? wow… another smart ass comment from you which doesnt suprise me none. dude, havent you ever heard that patients is a vertue? apparently not! give the guy a chance to heel his hand for crying out loud! further more, sammy hagar worked really well w/ vh, not to mention how well they worked together back then. also you tell me this!, how many albums went number one w/ dlr? maybe the 1984 album if that? do me a favor dude, stop bashing sammy b/c he’s also good at what he does w/ his music! i know you have your wright to ur own opinion like everybody else does but tone it down a bit for god sakes. me personally, im not a big dlr fan but i dont go bashing him either just so you know. so do me a huge favor and stop ur bitching and lets just hope for the best.

  • Kimberly

Music doesn’t leave a person…no matter how long you live or are active in music. As a musician I know music has to do with emotions and it is in your soul. He has tons of music left in him because look at all he has experienced that is just etching to get out. An artist releases themselves through their music which is what I am confident we will see with Eddie and the boys in a little while! <3

PS– Little Guitars is one of my favorites:):)

  • Keith

Just more examples for VHND to elimate the comments sections of these posts. What’s the need for it anyaway and W.T.F.Cares ???

  • Joe

Had to go to Germany to have the surgery? I figure with the advance in sports medicine here in the USA that he could have determined the symptoms and had surgery here. Guess after the Michael Jackson thing. Kinda hard to trust the doctors out in L.A. Prolly for the best.

  • Bob-o

“excuse # 500,028,833,776,653,995,455 on why the next van halen album is never going to happen”

You’re damn right, Ed’s just being a selfish puss. It’s just his left hand. Man up Nancy boy and make an album. Everybody knows that making an album is more important than your health.

  • Leroy

Hmm. Maybe this was the reason for the break during to tour….

  • Matt from Australia

Anyway – who’s to say production on some new music won’t happen anytime soon. For all we know Ed could be wokring on some stuff right now (all be it slowly while his hand is recovering).
