Wow better than anything VH has put out in While, glad to hear sammie is still keeping the rock and roll alive!

  • Line6Guy

Jesus Hagar ruins a lot of these songs with his third grade lyrics! Some of the music sounds really GOOD but as soon as Sammy opens his mouth it gets really retarded!!

“Get It Up” & “Turnin’ Left” are ROCKIN’ though!! My Kinda Girl definately sounds like a radio hit to me!!

  • willie

Hey Sam + Mike I love ya but this stuff doesn’t hold a candle to your VH stuff.. Don’t worry Ed will take u both back after Dave does something stupid….

  • SCAR

    Sounds pretty fuckin good!!!!

  • ben

Sounds like OK songs to me, nothing spectacular.
Sounds like they are trying to hard to sound like Van Halen, I thought Satriani would bring something different to the mix, but I guess he wants to sound like Eddie.

If Dave with Vai didn’t do anything besides one good album, Sam with Satriani and an awful name won’t either.

  • Mitch Cumsteen

    Needs more cowbell!!

  • Rodney

30 Secs of any song will never give it justice.
Most of the songs sound great. Def…can’t wait for this cd.

  • Papa

I wish Sam would just sing instead of scream. He has one of the most underrated voices in rock. I think this will be a 3 star album. Satch is a great guitar player, but I’m worried he’s trying to play notes as fast as possible as opposed to a good groove. I hope I’m wrong. I’m interested in seeing what the set list will look like when they tour. It would be nice if they delved deep into solo Hagar. Not sure Sam can sing Chili Pepper songs.

  • phil

can’t wait for the live shows…it’s going to be fun.

  • http://vhlinks EL c

I think it will be an awesome album, with great songs. Its funny how people want to sum it all up after hearing what, 30 seconds of each song???????????????????
withe plain stupid ass comments like ‘joe wants to sound like eddie’, well joe never did, and certainly doesnt need to know. hagar’s voice sounds the best it ever has, and the bass grooves like we never heard before.
stop the vh comparisons, cause this aint VH. Get it eddie and alex and dave sheep?
what we have is a functional productive band that has created what will be an awesome album, and unfortunately something that the clones will oly critize cause they havent got anything else to listen to, or havent done for the past how ever many years.
Where was that DVD of the last re hash tour? Oh thats right we are still waiting for Oakland, thats right with all the other goodies in that box set that will be released after the 10 albums worth of material, but only after we have been subjected to guitar hero, new guitars, old guitars, sneakers, pornos (oops sorry soundtracks, thats a slight on the artist)and anything else with a fuckin striped motif.
I think it is the VH Eddie clones are the ones that have to let go cause everyone here with the foot is pretty, pretty happy right now, and yes, pun intended brother.

  • Bocephus

It’s only 30 seconds, and you can tell there was heart poured into them, but I’ll take Ed’s edge any day and twice on Sunday.

Watered down lyrics with some umphhh from Satch, Mikey and Chad…but I’m looking for the VH lads to counter.

  • kenny

not really good, but i will give it a full listen!

  • pete

why so much hatred of sammy on here?all he did was step into van halen after dave left for a solo career.sammys solo stuff never really did anything for me but im not gonna hate on the guy because dave made a bad career decision.

  • pete

btw i need to hear more but judging from the samples the album doesnt sound bad at all.

  • Kayzer Sozay

Thanks, Line6guy, for the review. These clips for the most part have very little singing in them but apparently that was enough for you to slam Sammy for his third grade lyrics. Guess we won’t need to wait to hear the whole tunes.

  • T.O. Mike

I like what I hear so far……..hard to really judge with such small bits!! Better than a lot of the shit thats out there now tho!!

  • phil

skutch, how was the chili dog festival. sounds like fun but i’m in orange county, ca……GO METS! GO VH! GO CF!

  • shawn

Hard to tell. I usually have to listen to everything a few times before make a judgement. It sounds promising.

  • DANNY BOY

The guitar sounds nasty, interesting, different, new, wild, exciting and melodic! The drums oddly enough are not what I was expecting from the Chili Pepper drummer, pretty basic, but then again maybe he is..not bad granted, just thought there would be more dynamics going on. Michael Anthony’s patented vocals aren’t really noticeable either, which is odd, considering his voice made those Van Halen choruses scream, why in the hell wouldn’t you use them on any song you recorded with him (granted you cant really tell with these clips). Sammy, man oh man, lyrically he needs help for sure-love his voice and he can do anything he wants but jesus man, read a book or something, write something different and relevant! One last point, why the hell do such incredible artists fuck such good things up? Original Van Halen, all of them, don’t fix what wasn’t broken! Now it is a pitiful punchline of revolving lead singers, now bassist. So stupid, and sad! It is never EVER going to be the same without that original line up no matter what ANYONE says including the band. Maybe one day they will open their eyes and get it all back!

  • http://501st.com Skutch

Yeah Phil, The Chili Dog Festival was great but I was the only one that showed up. I had my “VHND Rockers Meet Here” sign and 100 chili dogs prepared. I ate about 27 and then got the poops bad. We’ll reschedule. I’ll keep everyone posted.

  • BradClark

I like Sammy. I like Mikey and Joe and Chad. Unfortunately, like much of Sammy’s solo work, and his last collaboration with VH, there is likely a serious lack of quality control. He is 61 and he admits he doesn’t listen to current music. He is out of touch. Sure, there is an awesome groove here. Sammy DOES have a great voice. If his last Wabo album is any indication (come on, he thought he could make “Fight for your Right to Party” better????) the lyrics on this will be no better than “Big Fat Money”, or “Up for Breakfast.” I will buy the CD, and I will respect were all of these awesome musicians have come from, but I won’t expect anything much better than the music mentioned above. The name of “Chickenfoot” in itself begs the question of how inventive this collaboration can really be.

  • phil

there should be an annual vhnd rockers meeting in las vegas. booze, gambling, hookers….everything a VH fan needs!

  • Mike

What’s wrong with these four cats putting out an album? Would you rather not have this album AND the deafening silence from Van Halen? Frankly, I want new music from CF AND VH, but I guess we’ll have to settle for CF music/tour and a video game from VH. This whole Dave vs. Sammy argument is tired. Now we get Ed vs. Joe? I didn’t know that making music was a contest.

  • ben

Hey elsie sorry EL c everybody knows their is no need to compare Ed with Satch, they are in a league of their own, that’s why I said that Satriani is trying to hard to sound like Eddie but thats the truth, Reality hurts!
I wish Joe would have Not tried to sound like someone else and just be him, but I guess havin Mike and Sam is a tough influence, and specially cause Sam is desperate for another VH success kind of band.

  • Jeremy

By the way, it was Sammy AND Joe who wrote the lyrics. So just to let people know that who keep bashing Sammy for it.

Also, I just want to see those who can do better and write over 4 decades worth of songs and see if you can find new stuff to write!

  • mjc

it will be THE album & tour of the fuckin’ year. The Detroit Lions might win the super bowl before Ed does anything new.

  • Deja Vu

I love the guys that pan smoke and the band. Listen to the tracks once or twice and then trash it. Trash 30 second clips, what a joke. The three full songs released are pure rock n roll. On the three released songs smoke is tearin up the solos and layin down some fresh licks and new sounds. Listen to the solo in the middle of soap on the rope, with that wicked black sabbath like sound followed by a ripping solo and thumpin bass line, hell yeah!… The drums are crisp and on beat driving the tunes with Mikeys solid bass. Sammy vocals are pure rock n roll as always. While the time goes by for VH fans waiting for the VH brothers to get their shi* together and record an album, chickenfoot fans are gearin up for the album release and tour. Remember how it felt when VH was gonna release a new album. Couldnt wait to get a copy the day it came out and listen to each track in awe. I think by now, most VH fans have forgotten that feeling and have become bitter towards any new material Sammy and Mikey come out with, even when they have a premiere drummer and guitarist on board. Stop talking about the new VH album. 2007 was 2 years ago. The tour has been over for a year and another long wait has started again. Get on board the Chickenfoot ride before you miss it.

  • Jeremy

    I agree Deja Vu!

See we have music critics on here who think, think they know music. I for one just enjoy people who actually make music for their fans and for themselves.

Van Halen has 93 million reasons NOT to make new music. Why should they?

I mean 2 reunion tours made Eddie and Alex 150 million dollars!

They know that the “fans” would pay to see Eddie guitaring, Alex drumming, and Wolfgang playing Mike’s bass parts, and Roth, or whoever Eddie wants to sing.

1998 until now is along time not to release music. If Van Halen is the marquee band that those guys claim to be, show it!

Not on a reunion tours or merchandise, but to make an album.

I’ve posted on these articles getting the so called “fans” to prove to me why they hold onto a band that has no future.

Say what you want about Sammy, but he releases music almost every year AND does it because he loves it!

Not to make money and be the biggest anymore. He’s done that already and has nothing to prove.

  • Karl

After having come to this site for some time now I’m amazed at how musically ignorant some VH fans are. I assumed, as Ed is one of the greatest musicians of his generation (on any instrument, not just guitar), that VH fans would understand just a little more about music than the average rock fan. But nope, time and time again we get the musically retarded saying “They’re trying too hard to sound like Van Halen…” and “Joe is trying to sound like Eddie…”. Jesus, how little are you hearing of what’s coming out of your speakers if you think this sounds like VH? The only distinctive element that links this to VH is the tone of Sammy’s voice. The other hallmark of this sound is Joe’s guitar, and Joe sounds like Joe, not Eddie. Sure, joe owes a debt to Shreddie Eddie, but there’s just as much Hendrix in there and it’s all mixed to a pure Satriani recipe and if you think that Joe just sounds like Ed then you probably also think that Metallica sound just like AC/DC. It’s kind of depressing that great musicians put so much into their art (both VH and CF) yet half their fans are deaf…

Like what I’m hearing on these tracks. We’re certainly not in the presence of greatness and it ain’t going to change rock, but I think I’ll enjoy the album. Quality rock is thin on the ground these days, thank God someone’s still at it.

  • Rodney

    Jeremy!!! Once again!! Ahmen brother

  • Jake

Boy, all of the Sammy lovers are sure up and ready to argue eh? Well, I for one am still listening to this band and trying to see whether or not I waste my $9.99 at Best Buy on them and these clips have not helped.

As I’ve said before in other post’s I am a big Satch fan and loved the Chili Pepper’s, and I also once was a huge fan of VH with Sammy so I want to like this music. From these clips I can honestly make my opinion and say the following:

    1. Satch is killer but his tone is unmistakable Eddie Van Halen on this disc. It is much more dirty than the Satch I am used to from disc’s like Surfin’ w/ the Alien and The Extremist. When I buy a disc with Satch on it I want to hear Satch, not an EVH rip off. Sure he is not doing instrumental music here but that shouldn’t effect the way he dials in “his” sound.

    2. Clip quality aside, I agree that I don’t hear enough of Mike’s voice on these tunes, it should be more prominant after all Sammy did pluck him from VH to sell more records and try and convert VH fans like me, so use him for Christ sake.

    3. Sammy’s voice to me sounds good still but on the three full released tunes his lyrics just suck. I have said it repeatedly but seriously, as one poster mentioned, read a book or turn on the T.V for a minute and sing about something relevant. “I’m your hootchie cootchie man”, that seriously sucks bad, real bad.

    4. The music overall sounds a little dated and tired. There are real momoents where if Andy Johns would have pushed these boys the tunes would have been really something but I’m sure egos got in the way of that and we have what we are listening to, just stale rock from a 61 year old Buffett wanna be.

So until I hear better clips at full length I for one ain’t going to buy this crap that I am hearing. Yup, you guys are right, there hasn’t been any new VH to speak of for quite some time but that doesn’t give them the right to release this crap once a year. I’ll Wait for some good tunes and hope my favorite band delivers, and if not I still have the first 6 disc’s and select tunes from the Sammy era to go back to. . . . .

  • Fan of GREAT music

First two songs released, I was skeptical. I have not heard the entire songs sampled but from the small amount heard, I think it will be a great album for them to start with. The tracks that differ from your normal radio tracks show influence from Montrose, Zepplin, with a little (forgive me) early DLR and Mr. Big. The band is TIGHT and Sammy sounds great when singing but I agree that the screaming needs to be left out. The harmonies are brilliant!! I look forward to the album and more albums to follow!! CHEERS CHICKENFOOT!!

  • stew

BOOOOORING!! Same ole Van Hagar Crap!!!! I cant belive anyone likes this!!!

  • Erick

It’s good to see that most of you are happy with ‘new music’ from chickenfoot. Well good luck to you guys. You can point out that Van Halen has no future, well I don’t care, I rather listen to some terrific old music (the first mighty 6) then trying to force myself into liking this. Can’t wait for another VH-reunion tour.

CF will be all over in a year or so anyways. Then you can read articles from Joe where he’ll tell all you ‘cf-fans’ how he did not like this ‘supergroup’ at all.

Now don’t get all upset… I’m just giving my opinion on an average band at the VAN HALEN NEWS DESK.

  • FAMAC

I like the way people say as a matter of fact that Sammy is a good singer. Why is Sammy a good singer? Because he can sing high and scream? Personally, I can’t stand his voice, I think its horrible – and his lyrics are lazy and laughable. The minute he starts making noise, I’m cringing.

I think Sammy ruins everything he touches. He always brings the same set of crappy lyrics and the same approach to any material he works on which is why it all sounds the same.

Here he is with one of the worlds most famous guitarists, and this might as well ne another Sammy solo project. A fresh crew and sound, same old Sammy. Where is his creativity? It doesn’t exist.

Sammy is BBQ sauce in human form. It doesn’t matter how good the meat and the bun is, it just ends up tasting like BBQ sauce.

  • Rick

    Nothin but Shit!!!!

  • Jake

FAMAC, I agree with you but I do have to add one thing that differs between Sammy and BBQ sauce. BBQ sauce is actually GOOD!!

  • Mitch Cumsteen

I took another listen…STILL needs more cowbell!!

  • Aftershock

El C wrote: “I think it will be an awesome album, with great songs. Its funny how people want to sum it all up after hearing what, 30 seconds of each song???????????????????”

I agree. It is funny — and ironic — that you would point that out.

  • Mike

Not bad…better than anything on radio today.

  • TheTruthHurts

Pete wrote: “Why so much hatred of sammy on here? all he did was step into van halen after dave left for a solo career. sammys solo stuff never really did anything for me but im not gonna hate on the guy because dave made a bad career decision.”

That’s because you’re intelligent, normal, and rational. But when your douchebaggery includes hating a guy for no other reason than being the one hired to replace another guy that left your favorite band, what do you expect? These are the same people that stiff the waitress because their food tasted bad.

  • Adam

Okay, some of these negative comments are ridiculous. To the people here who are always saying Chickenfoot sucks – I simply don’t believe that you really think that. If a person loves Van Halen, there is no way that they wouldn’t at least LIKE Chickenfoot.

I’ve been thinking this for months as I read this site, and I’ll finally say something now…I CAN NOT BELIEVE how negative some of you frequent VHND commentors are! Here’s some great music made by two ex-VH members, and half the people who bother to post are complaining about it??

As far as the constant negative comments from the usual suspects, I think some of you people are simply miserable. Your complaining mentality, negative energy, and terrible spirit are, ironically, the EXACT OPPOSITE of what Van Halen has always been all about, which is having a GOOD TIME and enjoying life.

Consider this – a lot of people here belittle Sammy for all sorts of things. Ironically, Sammy is incredibly happy, rich, and successful. But, what’s most important – I would bet he’s enjoying life FAR more than any of the miserable people slamming him on this site. How funny is that? He is being attacked by people that have nothing better to do than complain on a website about his lyrics. Meanwhile he’s laughing all the way to the bank, as Chickenfoot sells out shows & is about to put on a great tour for thousands of rock fans.

I just think that an alarming number of VH fans who post here are “the glass is half empty” people. What is wrong with you guys? This is just rock ‘n’ roll, and there is nothing to complain about.

So, to all the negative people who post on this site regularly, whether you are angry at Van Halen and/or Chickenfoot, please try to get yourself happy. Your negativity is somewhat disgusting and this isn’t the way you should live your life. Get outside, go party with some friends, take a deep breath and smile. Whatever helps.

By the way, I LOVE what I’m hearing from Chickenfoot, and I love BOTH eras of Van Halen, even though I prefer the David Lee Roth years. It’s all good.

  • Karl

^ It’s just a team game for some people, the music is secondary…

  • 5150TIM

yeah ADAM, the are going to tour too thousands of people!! about 2 thousand!hahahahah have you seen the venues? but your right he will laugh all the way to the bank, and thats the problem. thats why i have no problem with ed haucking everything from guitars to sneakers. he makes some money there and we dont have to worry about him throwing music out to make money. i know i know they havent made music recently(YEARS!!) but thats a small price for us fans to pay to not have to delete a record from there cataloge cause it was a shit effort!!!

  • Karl

    ^ Deluded.

  • Gonzalo

Adam, you’re absolutely right! I don’t understand why some people are so negative about a new band with two former members of one of our favorite bands… It’s so sad for them…

  • Lombo

    Chickenfoot SERIOUSLY Rocks.
It’s simple!! people if you don’t like this go out for a walk or a drink and don’t break the balls!! WTF

  • FAMAC

Some people have to realize that there are Van Halen fans that don’t like the Hagar years. Its isn’t about him replacing Roth, its HOW he replaced him – poorly.

And it isn’t about “hating” someone. I have a lot of respect for Sam’s business skills – he showed amazing intelligence with his tequila branding – I’m sure I would like him personally – but I just don’t think he brings anything to the music world, plus he almost destroyed the legacy of a great band.

  • phil

erick, i think when van halen returns it will be great and exciting. as for chickenfoot we are just excited to have something new from michael and sammy. in no way do i think van halen is done. i support current and former members of VH (including gary). yes, i am guilty of sh#! talking but it’s just for fun. i wish nothing but the best for ed,al,dave, wolfie, mike, sammy and gary. i’m excited for CF and equally excited to see what comes out of the VH camp when they are ready…

  • Vanicionado

David Lee Roth leaves Van Halen in ’85.

Eddie VS. Dave for the next two albums…

    (Van Halen wins that battle.)

Sammy Hagar stops recording albums with Van Halen in ’96.

Eddie VS. Sammy for then next…??

Chickenfoot will fuel Eddie’s fire -> Next Van Halen album will smoke!!

    It’s a win-win for all!
