VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Chickenfoot cover story

m55bThe Guitar World’s Chickenfoot issue just arrived at Van Halen Store. It’s got a huge, 8-page cover story on “Rock and roll’s most unlikely–but most talked about–supergroup.”

Guitar World loved the album, and had this to say about the guitarist: “Satriani, who has, over the years, established a personality on the guitar that is instantly recognizable, doesn’t quite sound like himself. He sounds like another guitarist entirely, one still blessed with ungodly chops, but not the same Joe Satriani we’ve come to know since 1986. His playing is grittier, dirtier, less “fussed over” and, in effect, more soulful than ever.

A few random quotes from the band:

Sammy Hagar: “We’ve already got the money, and we have enough fame. This band is about being part of something again. Something great.”

“Dude, the music is SO there. It’s dirty, it’s greasy, it’s swampy, it grooves. It’s as tripped out as a fucking chicken foot!” [laughs]

“This isn’t the Sammy show. This isn’t the Cabos. No siree. I’m tired of being the boss. I just want to sing and be part of something great.”

“The reason why Mike doesn’t get the kind of credit he deserves is that he’s played with Eddie Van Halen. A bass player is never going to get the kind of respect he deserves next to Eddie Van Halen. Hell, Jack Bruce didn’t get much credit compared to Eric Clapton. It’s just the nature of things.”

Chad Smith: “When I think of the word “supergroup,” I think of those bands that were kind of artificially put together, where guys auditioned and record company guys got involved and all that. We came together very naturally. Everything was fun, it felt good, there was nothing preconceived about it.”

Michael Anthony, when asked about his background harmonies: “In the early Van Halen days, Eddie and I would sing together, and it was as much a part of the sound as Eddie’s guitar playing. Then when Sammy joined, it increased. You hear it and you’re like, Whoa, that’s Van Halen!” Our fans know the sound. They grew up on it.”

Joe Satriani: “I’ve wanted this since I was a kid.”

It’s great to hear from Sammy & Michael. Thanks for the post! I’m looking forward to more rock-n-roll this summer!!!!!!

I can’t believe there aren’t already several posts complaining that this is a VH website so there shouldn’t be any stories about Chickenfoot.

I’m looking forward to this article. Hats of to Sammy for paying Ed a compliment (albeit indirectly) that the reason Mikey doesn’t get the credit he deserves was that he was playing alongside a giant in Eddie.

All this talk about Chickenfoot just makes me wish new VH material would be out sooner.

  • Big Al

I disagree with Mikey’s comments! When I hear the 2 new Chickenfoot songs and when the back up vocals come in, I don’t hear the music I grew up on. I don’t think Van Halen!

I do like the 2 songs but Ed’s guitar and tone made Van Halen not the back up vocals!

I don’t hear any vocals in Eruption but I do hear the Van Halen SOUND!! That sound made alot of people RICH and FAMOUS!!!

Chickenfoot sounds like Chickenfoot NOT Van Halen ( no matter who was singing for them)!

“We’ve already got the money, and we have enough fame. This band is about being part of something again. Something great.” – translates to – we’re probably only gonna seel 5,000 albums

Ok cool, this is where people are acutally talking about music and not trying to sell stuff.

You know what my Van Halen brothers and sisters? At this point I will take whatever I can get.

Rush and Iron Maiden. Now there are two bands that know how to release stuff the fans acutally want. Yes, I know I am a just a bitter fan. I totally admit that. Im just saying for God’s sake where is the damn Oakland show!!!!!!!

  • C’mom

Why do are some people comparing this to VH- This isn’t VH and I for one am glad. Its a new band. Will there some similarities to Vh, possibly- some people might hear it and some might not. I am glad this band came to fruition, I have always enjoyed/ love VH. I grew on on Dave VH, and instantly accepted Sammy and grew to love that version of VH. I am happy we have new music, music that has a “new sound”, four accomplished guys from different styles of rock who have come together for fun and have turned it into what sounds like a great album. I can’t wait!

  • Rocko

    Rock On Chickenfoot!!!!!!

  • Keith

Looks like GW needs to hire a proof-reader.They could have at least lined up the names under the correct person. They deserve that respect at least. Geeesh

  • ace5150

This album is starting to generate a lot of publicity considering the release date is 3 months away.

It sounds promising because if it was a crap album the record label wouldn’t put a whole lot of money and publicity into it.

  • Shawn

It must be awesome to make a living doing what you love. I have high hopes for a great album.

Come on!!! The two new songs are ok. Its not Van Halen or Zepplin. Its just Sammy with a harder sounding band. Nothing really new? Sammy has a great voice. But still sounds like solo Sammy. I do not see why the hype?

  • Pete

Finally…real music to back up some very real hype…I’m psyched to have this to look forward to this summer!

  • Johnny

I just got my GW in the mail today, cant wait to read it later.
I for one can’t wait for this cd!!!!! I have been looking forward to this for almost over a year when it originaly was talked about. I know its not VH, but as close as we are going to get (to Van Hagar at least..which is my fav era)
the 2 new songs are ok, they grow on you. Im sure the rest of the cd will be great! CHICKENFOOT!!!
