Eddie Van Halen Dismisses Jimi Hendrix Comparisons

From www.spinner.com:

When Eddie Van Halen talks about guitars, people listen. It’s like LeBron James waxing poetic on the art of the assist, or Kate Winslet on getting acting awards. Van Halen is that highly regarded in the guitar world. In fact, in a recent article in USA Today, he was referred to as “the Jimi Hendrix of his generation.”

High praise indeed. What does Eddie think of accolades like that? “I say it’s a hell of a compliment, but at the same time I’m really nothing like Jimi Hendrix,” he says, quickly adding that he doesn’t mean any disrespect. “I’m just saying I’m very different than Hendrix because I create stuff. He used so many effects and stuff that I was the complete opposite. I wanted the guitar to do things, but nobody built the guitar that I wanted. Hendrix didn’t do things like that. He was an amazing player, but if you ever heard any live bootlegs of him, even some of the Woodstock stuff, it’s hard for him to keep that thing even tuned.”

Growing up in Southern California, Van Halen got turned on to the six-string by surf music. “The first song I ever learned was ‘Pipeline,’ by the Surfaris, and ‘Wipeout.’ Then I hear this song on the radio — it was the ‘Blues Theme’ on the soundtrack to ‘Easy Rider,’” he says. “It was the first time I heard a distorted guitar, and I’m going, ‘God, what is that?’ I didn’t really have an amp then. I went to Dow Radio in Pasadena, and I jerry-rigged this plug to plug into the stereo. I just turned the damn thing all the way up, and it distorted. So every amp I’ve ever used, I just turn it all the way up.”

All of Van Halen’s guitars, starting with his famous first model, Frankenstein, have been custom-made. And now he’s taken his 35 years of experience and put it into the Wolfgang, his new Fender guitar, named for his son. “One more shot working with a major company to give people what I use,” he says.

The guitar went through two years of vigorous testing, according to Van Halen. “I’m pretty hard on Fender, and I make sure that they keep an eye on the people that make the parts that go into my guitars and my amps. I’m not a tyrant — it’s just that my name and my son’s name are on it, and I don’t just endorse, I build it.”

Of course, today’s technology makes everything so easy, which Van Halen doesn’t see as a good thing. “I think it stops people from being creative, because they don’t have to,” he says. “But also, to me, it lowers the standards. I don’t know who exactly is in charge of the MP3 player, the iPod business, who decided that is gonna be the standard sampling rate, because it’s nothing compared to a good mastered LP, nothing at all.”

Isn’t that thinking a bit antiquated, back to the way of the dinosaurs? “Yeah, maybe, but dinosaurs ruled this planet a lot longer than people have,” he says, laughing.

how about that new van halen “lp” and make it a double…

  • http://michaelquinn.com.au Michael

How did a comparison of Eddie and Hendrix get turned into Eddie pimping his fracking guitar again???

  • Juca

How about new double live- and studio “lp” ?

  • Peedah

This an old article when the 09 Wolfgang debuted.

  • Bill

    Yawn!

    Stretch!

    Huh? Wha..Ed’s got a new guitar out? Wow…I haven’t heard…

Sheesh! C’mon, Ed! We are so F’ING tired of this! Record ONE song – JUST ONE NEW SONG! For God’s sake! Even Axel Rose put out his damned record before you!

  • adam

i wonder what jimi would have built if he made it past 27. maybe a spaceship home…

  • RickieVanWhalen

Guitar building aside, Jimi Hendrix could not possibly understand the vocabulary EVH plays with or replicate the technique. Anything beyond three finger blues was foreign to him.

  • Fred

Eddie has never thought of Hendrix as an influence. I remember articles in the 80′s about this. They’re totally different.

And, I don’t think Hendrix is the guitarist we judge all other guitarists against. I mean, in some ways, Hendrix was the Eddie Van Halen of his generation.

  • Big J

Funny they mention Dinosaurs cause it has been since the Jurassic period since Van Halen has put out new music

  • Chris

When King Edward speaks its all so simple!!! I too never really compared Eddie’s playing to Hendrix, like Eddie said Hendrix and himself are different players. And that’s the way it should be!!! Couldn’t care who’s best (leave that to the sports please!) all that matters is both Eddie and Jimi spoke to generations and made their mark on the music landscape. It’s just a shame Jimi didn’t live long enough to see/hear Eddie Van Halen and other great guitarist too…

  • Gonzalo

    He is absolutely right

  • http://www.501stlegion.org skutch

Swell, an even newer ugly guitar on the shelves.

  • DANOOOSH

BEFORE THE TOUR LAST YEAR,MOST OF THE POSERS ON THIS SITE SAID THE REUNION WOULD NEVER HAPPEN,AND IT DID…THEN YOU SAID THEY WOULD NEVER MAKE IT TO THE END OF THE TOUR,AND THEY DID…WHY DO YOU PUNKS REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT VH WILL GIVE US SOME NEW TUNES..??

  • Bill

    DANOOSH…

Touring on twenty-year-old material is one thing; coming up with new tunes and releasing them is completely different. I grew up on VH – I think they are one of the top three rock bands ever! Normally, I’d just shrug my shoulders and give up on them; instead, I’m mad! They’re just sitting back and…what? Nothing??

C’mon. If Ed’s got so many tunes written and ready to go, put some of ‘em out! Hell – just put ONE out! Keep the fans engaged and excited!

I’m not quite giving up on him – not yet – but I’m getting close. Ok, get Wolfgang out of school, get married, etc, cross things off the list. Once that’s done, get a tune finished and put it on ITunes, sell it from your website, or – perish the thought – just give it away!

Today’s music is not about the Live Nation/Ticketmaster merger, or giving CPR to the nearly-dead recorded music industry – it’s about keeping your fanbase engaged. The clamor for new material is reaching fever pitch, and all Ed wants to do is push guitars.

HEY ED! THE FANS WANT NEW MUSIC!

    Got it? Probably not…

  • Karl

Oh, let’s see, how about ten years of not producing any new music, for a start…

Yet another advert for Eddies new guitar. Yawn.

  • Nick

I think the comparisons have everything to do with impact, not necessarily playing style. Both guitarist spawned new styles, showing people a new way of playing.

I do think that they both play very sloppy live too, hitting the wrong note all of the time.

  • Eric

    Yaaawwwnnnnn, old news, I’m tired.

  • Myron Philpot

I too am tired of the Hendrix comparisons, be it with EVH or others. Yeah, he was very creative and unique but he died over 30 years ago after a short career and small output. Ed was right on too: if you listen to any live recordings, Jimi was out of tune half the time (many times wallowing in feedback to hide it). I used to be a disciple but the whole Hendrix thing has gotten so stale. It didn’t help either when Al Hendrix kept picking the carcass clean with new compliations or repackages. From that perspective, I can see Ed wanting to distance himself from Jimi who really didn’t influence him nor had any overlap in their careers.

Now, as far as all of Ed’s guitars being “custom made”: I say rubbish. You’re telling me Ed’s never played a stock guitar off the line? I thought that’s what the whole “consistency” thing was all about with EBMM, Peavey and now FMIC. So if you’re signature guitar is a mass produced item, how can it be custom made at the same time? Sure, Ed had special versions made for specific songs, etc. but then the fans definitely won’t have access to those so he’s actually moving AWAY from them. Not to mention where’s the striped color option and Drop-to-Hell tailpiece?!

  • Kevin

stop slamming his guitar advertising. Yeah it can be a little annoying, but that’s business! As a guitarist and huge VH fan myself, i am actually quite interested with the wolfgang, and it’s a good step considering nothing significant besides touring has happened for VH in the past few years.

Sure, new music would be great. i would LOVE to have some new VH tunes! remember guys, they’re way past their heyday. There’s nothing new they could come up with today that would match anything from back in the day. Nothing. Why did Robert Plant refuse to tour with Led Zeppelin this year? Same exact reason: said it could never recapture what they used to be. You have to think about that when you’re complaining for new music. I’m not slamming them at ALL, i love the band. But you need to stop whining about a lack of new music and this guitar. At least the wolfgang is SOMETHING new.

If Van Halen decides to release new music, they will do it when they are ready. So shut up.

  • Kevin

    And Myron Philpot,

The whole “striped” design and idea is Eddie’s own personal thing. It means something special for him. You can’t expect him to market that.
And don’t mention the Charvel Art Series, that’s different. Those were “pseudo-replicas”. That was the point: to look like his. This is his new design. They are supposed to look like themselves.

  • DANOOOSH

MOST OF US AT LEAST HAVE A GLIMMER OF HOPE THAT SOMEDAY WE WILL GET SOME NEW MUSIC.THAT IS WHY WE ALL VISIT THIS SITE.AT LEAST ED IS TALKING AND DOING A FEW INTERVIEWS.ITS A START..

  • http://photos4u2c.wordpress.com/ Dave

I used to read every word printed from an Ed interview. I found myself skimming this. Ed’s guitar marketing machine is putting out some repetitive stuff.

  • Nick

NEW MUSIC??? The last new songs VH came out with were on the “Best of Both World” greatest hits album. And those songs kind of sucked compared to when they were in their prime. Eddie’s playing isn’t nearly as good, nor his song writing, and is true for Sammy’s writing as well (though he can still sing)…lyrics were awful.

  • SCAR

Some of you posers make some very good pointless points. It’s quite entertaining to see you posers come back here time after time to whine and cry about absolutely everything EDVH. You complain about his tone, his guitars, his plan to conquer planet Mars etc.. What’s funny is that you come back here, everyday, to see if their is any news on new tunes and when it’s not there, you start your little pity parties. Tragic!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kenny in Florida

No new CD from Ed. Ed thought it would be better, with the state that the music industry is in, that you buy the new guitar, all the new gear, then make your own new Van Halen CD.

  • Karl

Danooosh, I’m also holding that glimmer of hope. Trouble is, I’ve been holding it for ten years now…

Nick, I’d be very happy if a new CD was full of songs like Me Wise Magic.

Scar, another pointless contribution from the board baby.

    Kenny: lol!

  • Myron Philpot

Point taken, Kevin. The candy striping is Ed’s and Ed’s alone. Poor example. The EVH Art Series seems to be a glaring exception to the rule though… And, I still want to know where the D2H bridge is! ;-)

I’m not bashing the EVH Wolfgang nor his need to constantly market it. He went “front office” right into the sales department but no biggie. Sammy and Mikey did too and no biggie with them either. If that’s what they want to do, no complaints from me. We guitarists are a fickle bunch and tend to lap up artist-endorsed equipment in the futile hopes that we may sound like them through some embedded magic or musical osmosis.

I’m actually indifferent whether VH ever releases new music again or not. Really. VH3 was the end for me and, quite frankly, there are too many other distractions in life that keep me from getting my hopes up. If they do, great! I’ll plunk down whatever coin for the new CD. If not, then I can still listen to their recorded glory days in crystal-clear digital (CDs, not MP3s).

  • Erick

Why do you guys want new music from VAN HALEN?

Sure, would be nice, but it’s not going to be as good as the first 6 masterpieces anyways and you and I know it.

I don’t need new music. I want another tour like last year!

  • pushtoshove

I don’t have any gripes with anyone’s opinions on this article….But In my humble opinion I thought that it would’ve served Ed better to dismiss the comparisons and leave it at that,But words sound different thru the media sometimes…Hendrix,Halen,Page….etc etc….they ( these three and the 300 or so i left out ) are all good and I think its a waste of an article….Just My Opinion

  • pushtoshove

But I guess it sells more magazines or adspace or whatever to be ….out spoken…

  • pushtoshove

Scratch that…I think its a shrewd way to get another Stellar Artists name attached to your product without actually having to get permission or compensate them financially….Very smart

  • Bocephus

Both excellent in their own rights..

Jimmy was good at his style and Edward at his respective way of navigating the instrument..

For Edward to say this is 100% correct…and he meant no disrespect.

Bottom line: They were different stylistally and he was right.

  • MICAL VEE

What hendrix did was bring the guitar to a new level, and if you watch the hendrix movie, stars like jagger, clapton and townsen were blown away!!! Then along comes eddie and he blows another generation away and takes the guitar to another level!!! That is why they are compared to one another!!! And by the way,out of tune or not, hendrix was killer live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DiamondDLR

    Ed is nothing like Jimi.

    Jimi made music.

Ed makes guitars, pedals, shirts, picks, excuses…

  • scott

    ed is a drunk loser

  • ClubfootKolby

Rock on Ed, all your music is great, love to hear Dave sing Year to the day, or Learning to see, probably the best guitar work ever.

  • Pete

Did you see Dave sing on the recent tour? He can’t even hit his old “high” notes let alone sing anything in Sammy’s register.

Dave could not sing Sammy in his prime, but what was most striking on the last tour was that Dave couldn’t sing “Dave” anymore either.

Don’t get me wrong, Dave doesn’t have to be able to sing like Sam to be good…but he reminded you of an aging, annoying uncle that might still joke around like it’s the old days but now he’s just “old”…

It was sad…there’s a reason why they have no plans to release that on DVD…on DVD you can rewind and see things again…

Two nights was enough for me last time around, but hats off to Ed…he played a hell of a lot better than he did in the 2004 tour…and SHAME on the boys for playing Michael Anthony samples rather than bringing the real thing.

  • Bill

If a band isn’t going to release any new music, then they go from being a band to being simple performers. VH has, apparently, made that transition. It can be done, Rush, U2, etc., are still BANDS! They create new music and keep the fans engaged. (It’s a little pitiful how U2 is whoring themselves to no avail, but that’s another story.)

I’m not on here lamenting the loss of VH as a band, so much as I’m lamenting the idea that Ed thinks he can keep stringing us along. I said in an earlier post that I haven’t given up yet, that I’m still hanging on for some new music.

You know what? Right here, right now – I give up! I’m done. I’m not checking vhnd.com (excellent site, btw) any more. I’m picking up and moving on.

Good luck, hangers-on. I give you credit – you’ve got more staying power than me.

  • Karl

I’m seriously thinking of following you out the door…

  • Gee Lopz

Eddie is my King, my favourite.

But Hendrix is a revolutionary. The first. Like Beatles, Elvis…

Am i wrong or Hendrix create and developing the Wah-Wah Cry Baby system?? He play slide-guitar with his finger rings!!

If Hendrix was born 10,15 years later, maybe he caught a better technology or equipments…

And unfortunelly he dies at 27…

(And “he have a ton of music” non-released in the vault…Hendrix built his own studio Eletric Ladyland…He was the leader/ditator of his band, etc, etc…)

Yes!! Like EVH!! Ten years before!!

I think Eddie should learning something with the Jimmy Hendrix life story.

The two GREATEST guitar players of the history. Different in style, but with a lot of common and relevance.

    Eddie, please, respect a master…

  • SCAR

Hey Bill and Karl – bye posers!!!!!

  • http://www.ericleland.com Jungleland2

They have a lot more in common that Ed wants to admit. They both built guitars, Jimi just built from existing parts, and he did help build his effects.

Not sure what the deal is for slammin Jimi on being out of tune in 1969 outdoors without a guitar tech (or locking tuning options)

Kinda like saying The New James Bond is a better spy than Sean Connery ’cause he has a cell phone

  • http://vhnd Jimmy Haynes

I think text looks so bold, not enough expression compared to when your actually looking eye to eye with someone answering your respectable questions. Dont take print so damn seriously. I’m sure Eddie really likes Jimi. He played some Hendrix songs with Steve Lukather for Jason Becker’s benefit. Anyway, I’ve also heard Eddie out of tune after really wailing in a song. Hendrix is amazing just as Eddie. I think Hendrix is great live. Not everybody thinks so. I guess its because I play guitar. I think he is best blues rocknroll singer/guitar/lead/rhythm all at once!

  • http://vhnd Jimmy Haynes

I think Eddie is the best lead/rythm guitar player. I belive some of his old live stuff is unsurpassed. Not everybody thinks so…I can play

  • Pete

    Jimmy knows…Jimmy can play…DON’T touch Jimmy…

  • http://vhnd Jimmy can play

Thanks for your opinion Pete. Thumbs up!

  • Cabo Wabo Tequila Man

Wow another article about his guitars! I don’t endorse them, I build them!

    That’s funny as hell!

Now we know why there hasn’t been a Van Halen record in over 11 years. Eddie is too busy building things he tells other people to do.

I helped this guy from a burning car and it was ok, but my new guitar is really light so it was easy for me to pull the guy out.

Please crawl in a hole already Eddie and end it!

  • David

Regardless of technique. Hendrix had a better grasp of the blues and his songs have way more substance than Ed’s.

  • Todd Garman

I don’t think Ed is drinking anymore, but he certainly does have an alcohol history. I have never heard Ed bad-mouth anyone directly (except for both Dave and Sammy). So I doubt that he was trying to slam Jimi. Regardless, if you play guitar you realize the talents of both of these players and there differences. I hope to hear new Van Halen music someday. I haven’t given up yet. But I edon’t expect anything new to be earth shattering either. As much as I love Van Halen, their prime has long past-as has mine I suppose. But I’m sure new Van Halen will be worth a listen even if it only reminds us of what once was the best rock and roll music around. The music that filled the air of every great party I can recall from my youth. Those days are gone but the magic might still be hiding in some future Van Halen music-and we’ll feel better once we get to hear it.

  • Paul

Think of it this way.or try to.Jimi Hendrix sounded the way he did 40 years ago and there was nothing like it at all.Even today Van Halen can’t go out here alone like Jimi Hendrix, and hold his own like jimi did(picture him trying to do the woodstack concert(a joke ).Jimi Hendrix created a way to captivate people into a sonic tomb.VAn Halen and the rest of the shredders used this and went into deep theroy-yet they rely on other singers to sing while they lay-back and try to remain perfect live, and in the studio. Its very different that doing both.Van Halen is a very good guitar player but like many of the greats will state-he is not in the same league as a Jimi Hendrix. There were shredders back in Jimi’s time, they refused to take the stage and be next to that kind of force.
