Eddie reflects on the 2007-2008 tour in new interview

There is a new interview with Eddie Van Halen in the April 2009 issue of Hustler magazine. Here are some of the highlights where Eddie talks about Van Halen’s 2007-2008 tour:

What was it like the first time you guys played after all those years ?

It was amazing. At first, obviously, Dave doubted that a 15-16 year old could do it. He said, “How’s a 15-year-old kid going to be able to handle standing in front of that many people? Will he be able to sing ? Does he have chops?” That all went out the window after the first rehearsal. (Laughs.) The best thing of all this is that we have all grown. In the old days we yelled and screamed at each other not because we didn’t like each other; it was more about the passion. We were always arguing about what the album cover should look like or what it should be called, shit like that, you know? It was our passion for the music, not anger towards each other.

Dave had slightly different ideas than Alex and I did. That led him to pursue a solo career. You know how the press can be. They turned it into a mudslinging thing that really never occurred. At least not to the extent that was reported. Where it actually started, nobody knows. Probably some journalist who took something out of context.

What was the best part of the tour?

The best part for me obviously was playing and being onstage with my son and my brother, and of course being back with Dave. It was a fucking blast. Like family playtime. I think the press made a lot bigger to-do about Dave leaving the band than it was. Okay, how do I say this without offending the womenfolk? It’s like any relationship. Everybody has to experiment. Maybe he didn’t want to be married that long. He wanted to try something else. When he realized the marriage was actually good, and maybe missed it a bit, we got back together.

Did Wolfgang actually pick the set list?

Yeah he put it together and we really dug it. But he got a little ticked off halfway through the tour when nobody wanted to change it. I was on his side because it would have been nice to change it up a little. We just didn’t have a long enough break in the tour to rehearse and work upother tunes. It took me a while to re-learn the ones we did play ’cause I hadn’t played ‘em for so many years. I mean, some songs, from the first and second record, I wrote in high school. So it goes way back for me.

Where there any songs that you didn’t play that you wished you could have?

Some new stuff would’ve been nice. But again, everything was in high gear as soon as we decided to do a tour that it would’ve taken time to write, record, mix, master, etc. We wouldn’t have been on tour in 2007-2008. Overall, it was very exciting to play those classics, and I believe that’s what the fans wanted to hear, anyway.

Is there going to be a CD/DVD from the tour ?

We did film and record 7 shows, but we kind of thought, why give people what they just saw? We have it. Maybe later. We just didn’t feel like the timing was right. Why give them exactly what they just saw? Somewhere in the future I’m sure it’ll surface. Maybe, if and when we decide to put everything we have out. Including things like me playing guitar at the 6th grade talent show. There’s all kinds of cool and funny shit we could put out. Who knows, really, when there are so many other things to do first. Like put out some new tunes.

the last paragraph of this interview is the stuff we all want…put together a box set of all the unreleased demos, alternate takes/lyrics etc. we all have crappy beta/vhs/33.5 lps/casettes/cds/dvds of this stuff but i would give my left nut for it fresh from the 5150 rhythm kitchen and pay just as much (REV. AL are you hearing this $$$$)hell call it greatest hits VOL II for all i care. oh and by the way keep the Samuel ROY tapes at 5150, you’ll need ‘em to hold the doors open while ya’ll blow the funk out recording the first new album in over a decade…later
    ps-hi Jeff :)

Check out his 1984 replica pants. Ha.. go Ed!

  • Scott the Video Guy

Eddie said, “Why give the people something they just saw?” I think Van Halen would be giving the people a tremendous upgrade of what they just saw.

Much of the joy in listening to Eddie play lies in the nuance and fine detail of his fretwork. Although Van Halen sounded pretty damn good live on the last tour, Eddies little noises, grace notes, and other subtleties that make Eddie the player he is, didn’t come out all that clearly through the enormous PA system. A DVD would really let us hear clearly what Eddie was up to. I’m not forgetting Al, Wolf and Dave either. I’d love to hear in greater detail how each of them performed on the tour.

    Scott

  • Bill 1521

Eddie, reliving a show is EXACTLY WHAT WE WANT!! Every band worth their salt has done it BUT Van Halen. I hope you read these comments of your fans screaming for live releases. Your music breaths live and I don’t understand how you don’t see that. The crap you put out with Sammy is cool aid compared to the Dom Parion that live with Dave would be.

I hope you reconsider and LISTEN TO DAVE, he is the marketing man. Please release LIVE WITH ROTH.

  • David Alexander

With all do respect to Ed, you’re full of it.

Ed came out and said Dave has “l.s.d”, lead singers disease.

There is video of Alex and Ed saying Dave is not the Dave of 1984. And the Dave coulndt sing anymore, and if they went on tour it would not last long. And would be a ripping of the fans.

Ed said he gave Dave a chance before the MTV Awards reunion. And that Dave insulted him, that the night was not about Ed’s hip, it was about Dave.

Alex said once Sammy joined the band it was like going from a piper cub (small airplane) to the Concord.

Ed used to complain that he liked working with Dave, but not living with him on tour.

Im glad you guys are back, but lets not blame the press for the negatives comments YOU made about Dave, Ed.

  • Kenny in florida

Wow, this is one of the most blatant examples of Ed dangling the unreleased material over our heads. They have all this great stuff to release. But no.

“I have all sorts of unreleased material. I’m not ready to release it yet. First. Buy the new CD if it ever comes out, spend $200 to see us live and then we will release the… What was I talking about? I have a new Wolfgang out with accessories.”

  • pushtoshove

its great to hear this from Ed….hope it is true

  • ben

Guess I’ll have to buy that mag.

  • dude from oregon

Saw them in Portland. It was amazing. I wish I had a live DVD so I could watch them play what I saw in 2007 over and over again. We have 2 Sammy DVD’s. Let’s get one with Dave!!!

  • Samplehead

So Ed & Al are the woman in the relationship and Dave is da man. Glad we finally sorted that out.

So why couldn’t they have played some new tunes without recording, mixing and mastering them first. In the good old days new material was road tested live way before it was even demo’d.

Oh well, at least there’s lots of activity. Ed is on a profile raising gig. Probably testing the waters for interest in new material versus another reunion tour first….

  • Dave Bridge

The balls in your court Ed, quit talking and lets see some action. You can only talk the talk so long before you loose all credibility.10 years is long enough.

  • DEBRA

Whatever Ed said about Dave and Dave said about Ed, it’s all in the past, so let it go.. They are together now and that’s what’s matters. I wish they would release the dvd of the tour. We dont care that it’s the same thing we just saw on tour. We love seeing that over and over again. But whatever Ed’s plan is, I know it’s a good one and we just have to be patient. Keep rockin boys!!!!!

  • stephan chartier

People pleople when are you going to learn bleave it when you see it and here it New stuff form the boys will happen Ed looks great seems like Dave and Ed are getting along so lets leave it that way before some asshole reporter says something stupid and it all falls apart.FOR you news reportors out their LEAVE THE VH BOYS ALONE YOU ASSHOLES.
They bring so much happness to people EDDIE we love you man and will never stop.

Keep rocken VH style just like you wrote on my 8×10 all those years ago eddie.

Thanks Man your most loyal fan

  • shayne

    lets see something new

  • ikethebird

It would be cool to see the 81 Oakland show and the 79 Fresno show remastered.Maybe a WACF show also. Why release something you just seen or can see on youtube?

  • Coyoteface

Oh, I have to agree with David Alexander on this to a certan extend. Muddslinging can snowball sometimes, but may I quote Edward van Halen on Dave in Guitar World, Sept. ’86, last two sentences:

“The guy just did not treat anybody like a human. He was like Idi Amin or Qaddafi”

Pretty strong words for someone whose only had minor issues with somebody else. Little room for misinterpretation here.

Edward van Halen will probably always be my favorite guitar player and I love Van Halen music, but frankly…I can’t help thinking that Edward is very quick at lying. Issues with DLR, issues with Sam Hagar, issues with Roth again, issues with Hagar again, leaving out Michael Anthony, but it’s certainly never his fault and afterwards things were never as serious as they looked. Sure, it’s not a statistical abnormality when you happen to run into a few people who develop a serious attitude problems when you happen to be working with them, but it does make you wonder.

But that’s not all. Edward’s stories about him having material for at least 20 albums are starting to become boring as well. He was already telling them in 1998 when VH III was painstakenly put together with (if I remember correctly) one producer leaving, another one telling other people he would “never do a rockband anymore” and one song replaced by another one at the very last minute.

Again, 5150 could indeed me packed with awesome material, but VH III ad the fact that VH has released only three songs in more than a decade does make you wonder.

I also wonder about one other thing. What if – and let’s hope this scenario stays fictional – it doesn’t work out with DLR again. What will we be hearing then? Was it “the Dave of 1984 all over again? Ïs he going to play the tuba once more? Will he find a new soulmate that will bring out the true sound of the actual VH?

Please, Edward, if the fans tell you they want to hear new material, they don’t mean a bunch of old lies with a new sugarcoating. They are actually talking about the stuff yu like so much and are really known for, namely great music.

  • Karl

Maybe Ed should read this thread to get an idea of what damage all his bullshit is doing to the mighty Van Halen. Is he so disconnected that he doesn’t realise that we’ve all read and seen exactly what he said about Dave? Personally I’d buy a CD of the sound of Edward Van Halen farting (well, at lest it would be new material) but is anyone here really expecting the second coming any time soon…

  • John

I would certainly hope they could put the issues in the past, but how can eddie say with a straight face that the mudslinging was caused by the press. The one common denominator in all the ridiculous personell problems with this band, be it Roth,Hagar,Cherone,Anthony has been Eddie and he refuses to acknowledge that.

  • theREALchris

People don’t want a DVD of what they just saw?! I would have paid plenty for one right out the door after the show!

  • Joe Joynt

I think we all agree that Eddie’s account of events recent & deep in the past are quite foggy. It doesn’t really matter. I never believe what he says and what he says isn’t WHY I am a huge fan of VH, it is the music not the drama. With that said, EVERYONE wants a DVD of the last tour!!! Everyone wants NEW MATERIAL! Please don’t remaster a remastered recording from 1983!! I honestly don’t give a fuck about ’83. I want new stuff! Though I am a big fan, VH is the slowest with getting anything done! WTF!? We hear a trickle of news about the BAND and tons of stuff about VH Store selling new(and old) MERC. I guess to keep us enthralled with this site??

Eddie! Listen to the fans for Fuck sake! New album. New DVD. New tour. And don’t fuck us on ticket prices!!
Yes. I am pissed off with VH for the way they have treated us fans like fucking cattle over the past decade(post Sammy)!

At least Sammy is out there, love him or hate him, every year for his fans(though a smaller fan-base now).

Every year VH is becoming less & less relevent in the industry because they are too inconsistent with EVERYTHING

    But I guess that’s Rock N Roll!!
    ~Peace

  • pushtoshove

There are some serious reality problems happening here.

  • jmd

    Please put out that DVD!!!

  • Steve O

They are probably hesitant to release the DVD now given the state of the economy. Sure, hard core fans will buy, but there may not be any buying. A longer wait and hopefully the improvement of the economy may see a greater demand for it.

  • Mitch

It’s kind of sad. More of the same from Ed. What is the color of the sky in your world? Do you ever read or hear about what the fans want? We embrace almost everything you do. But the drama is so old and played. Let Mike back in the band do a tour with sammy and dave! The fans, no doubt would line up. Until then. . . I listen to the albums and remember what was. . . . .sad, truly a waste.

  • chris omeara

    The reason VH never put out a live album with DLR is because he can’t sing worth a crap live- listen to all the old bootlegs and new YouTube videos;

I MUCH prefer the DLR era of VH and think they should take the new video footage into the studio and have DLR “fix” the bad vocal parts- Even Led Zep did this on Song Remains The Same, and many other bands on their live concert films.

We know DLR sounds UNMATCHABLE when in the studio with duplicate takes, so airbrush the vocals for us so they sound nice & release the DVD, which will please the fans & stoke the fire of VH’s popularity even higher. PLEASE and THANK YOU!

  • Dawn

Oh Eddie! That is what we want! I would love to buy a copy of the concert! The concerts were great and to relive it would be awesome! I was at one that was being recorded and one of the camera guys filmed right by me! I don’t want to have to buy some bad bootleg! I watch old footage all the time and would love the 07-08 tour! Please!

  • Jor-L5150

” but honey…. i HAD to buy this hustler…eddie van halen is in it ” LOL.

seriously , ed and revisionist history…. not just glossing over the EPIC feuds, but considering a box-set of vintage stuff?? … uhhh , helllloooo ….

  • Phil

I think David Alexander hit the nail on the head. I’m tickled pink that Dave and Eddie seem to be getting along, but those two used to fight like cats and dogs. Go to YouTube and search for old interviews.

  • Jor-L5150

“Dave had slightly different ideas than Alex and I did. That led him to pursue a solo career. You know how the press can be. They turned it into a mudslinging thing that really never occurred. At least not to the extent that was reported. Where it actually started, nobody knows. Probably some journalist who took something out of context.”

… i thought dave was the crazy one ….

  • Big J

Chris is right they don’t wanna put out the DVD cause of the sound, maybe Daves singing or Eddies playing cause I’ve seen some youtube clips where Ed screwed up bad. The sell em something they just saw is bullshit. The whole tour was all songs we’ve heard a million times. I will buy whatever Van Halen does cause I’m a diehard. But Edward is full of shit

  • Eric

It’s pains me to read anything Eddie says anymore, he needs to shut-up and record.

  • stew

I love it! Ed & Dave 4-ever .I want it all . New album , box set, DVD, B-sides, boot legs .

  • stew

I just have a question? Don’t you think it would have been great if during the last tour Ed & Dave did some of Dave’s solo stuff for an encore ! Like Yankee Rose or Tobacco Road ! That would be cool .

  • Kenny

    TAKE YOUR TIME ED……. =)

  • Greg

They wont release a live dvd cause most of the shows were crap. Last really good concert they gave was in 1993. And as far as Ed and Daves fighting not being as bad as the press made it, doesnt anyone remember the mtv interview were Ed told Dave “if you ever speak to me like that again you better be wearing a cup” Come on Ed gives us a break. Hey Dave, you own half the rights, you release the dvd.

  • Beau

“Why give people what they just saw?” Why was it promised at the izod center concert? This was a brilliant EVH interview otherwise, but from the sound of it, it looks like we’ll not see a DVD with Dave for a few years. I hope I’m wrong though.

  • Nuclear Joe

Okay, I got three things from this:
    * There’s not as much “passion” making things interesting any more
    * Ed would consider reentering into marriage with Val
    * The vaults are stuffed and overflowing with stuff they could release whenever they feel up to the task

  • ClubfootKolby

I’ll pay twenty bucks for a DVD of the last tour. All the live DVDS have the cool extra stuff that you miss while your watching the show. Cant wait. Thanks for the great tour.

  • Jim

Give the guy a break. All that Ed is trying to say is the tour went well, they’ve put all the stuff with dave that happened 25 years ago behind them, and we are going to see some new stuff come out in the not too distant future.

Once again, Ed gets criticized for absolutely nothing at all. Were words said back when dave left? sure. Did they spend all their time trying to bad mouth him and worry what was going to happen? no. Is it true that the media does not leave this alone and has probably made too much of this? Yes.
Are they older and mature now and aren’t worried about useless crap? Absolutely.

  • tim stone

I’ve been saying it for a long time, Ed is gone.He has become this generation’s Brian wilson. He has been locked up in that studio for so long he has lost touch with reality. Minor problems with Dave……….hello for 10 years it was the biggest feud in rock history.Ed is gone. The next time he cares about the fans will be the first time.

  • JB

We the Van Halen fans, have been loyal for a long fuckin time. I and countless others went to more than 1 show. WE WANT THE DVD AND A NEW ALBUM!! Someone talk to Ed please and change his mind on this. Record setting tour last year. The fans took care of VH, Isn’t it time to take care of us fans?

  • scott

    one word ed chickenfoot

  • Big Al

I LOVE IT!!!!!! LISTEN TO ALL THE RED HEAD WHIMPERING!!!!!

You guy’s are bringing tears to my eye’s!!!
    Ed lies
Dave and Ed didn’t like each other
We need new music it’s been 10 years
Sam and Mike will never be in the band again
    Ed’s the new Brian Wilson

ED DO THESE BABIES A FAVOR!! PLEASE RELEASE A DVD OF THE 07-08 TOUR!
Apparently all they do is watch the movie Beaches, eat ice cream and have a good cry!!!

When did VAN HALEN FANS become so SENSITIVE?
    I know, when Sammy joined!!

  • http://myspace.com/richardtrombley Trombley

    Ed Is full of it!
Ed started the mudslinging with dave not the Press.
I can pullout video and mags that can show that ED and Alex started the press wars with Dave.
Ed I hope you not hitting the bottle again.

  • Daniel

Well, I thought I would never live to see Ed and Dave onstage together and I saw them four times on the last tour. I’ll die a happier man just for that alone. Ed threw me a pick at the 2nd Garden show and Wolfie handed me one of his at the 2nd NJ show. If they never record again, I’ll live, but I’d sure like to see what they could do with Dave at the helm. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, but I won’t hold my breath.

Not surprising that they aren’t releasing a DVD, Ed’s too busy doing interview for porno mags.

  • Rocko

The Tour was the biggest success in the History of Van Halen. It was the Highly anticipated return or Roth and of the Old School VH Music live in over 20 years. If I was Ed, I’d still please the fans with the Release of the DVD/CD as a memorable souveneir to those who were there. Also For those who couldn’t afford to have attended the concert due to a ridiculously high proce ticket sale. Eddie, You’re great but please give the fans what they deserve from that tour. THE DAMN DVD/CD to live by.

  • http://vanhalennewsdesk Marshall

David Lee Roth has never claimed he was a great singer even though i think he is..He is my favorite singer!!.All this talk that Dave lost his voice is just stupid..Diamond Dave drinks beer whiskey smokes weed cigaretts…Dave dont take care of his voice and Dave still brings it every show!..Dave has not lost a step in anything he sings..He has always missed notes since he started singing and he is still great at watever he sings…He is live in front of your naked steaming eyes and ears ladies and gentleman!! He is Diamond Dave…SO SUCK IT 4 WHOEVER DONT LIKE DAVID LEE ROTH CUZ ROTH ALWAYS RULZ!!!!

  • Karl

    JB said:

“I and countless others went to more than 1 show.”

I travelled from London to New York to see ‘em because, personally, I don’t believe they’ll be able to hold it together long enough to make it to Europe or the recording studio!

And JB speaks for every single VH fan when he says: ” WE WANT THE DVD AND A NEW ALBUM!!”

C’mon Ed, just lay back and think of the money… after all, that seems to be you sole purpose these days.

    God, I hope he’s reading this thread…

  • Simon

“why give people what they just saw”…..hey, ED, there’s a World outside of the USA, like Europe, Asia…… ! Yes, again : WE WANT THE DVD AND A NEW ALBUM ! c’m on, there’s a lot of money for you out there to grab ;-) !

  • David Alexander

Ed, not everyone wanted to drop $300 to get decent seats for the last tour.

    Put out the DVD.

And climb out of your ivory tower, youre losing touch with the fans.
