Nuno Bettencourt On The ‘Nasty’ Van Halen Song ‘Dirty Movies’

Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt thinks “Dirty Movies” isn’t just good, it’s nasty good.

“To me [‘Dirty Movies’] was a rock funk that went right through me and it was about the pocket,” said Bettencourt in a recently released clip of Dweezil Zappa’s podcast Runnin’ With The Dweezil. In it the two discuss their love of Van Halen’s 1981 album ‘Fair Warning’ including the track “Dirty Movies”.

“The funk, the emotion…NASTY. Just nastiness,” added Bettencourt. “The dirtiness and the heaviness of it. Everything from lyrically, to the pocket of the band, everything, it might have been – even for a long time – my most favorite song on that album. I couldn’t stop listening to it. It made me move physically.

“There are songs you listen to [on ‘Fair Warning’] and there are songs I just could not fucking stop bopping my head to,” continued Bettencourt. “Yeah, ‘Mean Streets’ did that to me but it was a lot more pizzazzy and flashy. ‘Dirty Movies’ was nothing but nasty pocket to me.”

Listen to the entire clip including more of Zappa and Bettencourt’s thoughts on “Dirty Movies” along with “Mean Streets” below:

The 30-episode “Runnin’ With The Dweezil” podcast is available exclusively through dweezilzappa.com. Packages include listening parties, Q&A sessions, “Brown Sound” bonus episodes, custom Axe-FX, Helix, and Kemper presets, a 1-year subscription to Premier Guitar, and much more.

A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation and Feeding America.

  • Dragon Dragon I guess he bought the drum riser from the Van Halen camp. It looks like the last one they were using. I like the design of it, kind of an Art Deco feel.
