Early Sammy Hagar Footage Discovered

by VHND — updated November 29, 2018 Leave a Comment

We’ve discovered some decent quality footage from Sammy Hagar’s first decade as a solo artist, and we’ve decided to feature it.

We don’t normally feature stuff from Sammy Hagar’s solo career, but we found this interesting, because we’ve never seen pro shot footage from Sammy Hagar’s 1979 tour. (Not that we’ve searched for it much, but it’s still cool to see, nonetheless). We admit that it’s only new to us – we see that it’s been on YouTube for years.

This footage is from Feb 3rd, 1979, at The Summit in Houston, Texas, when Hagar was opening for Boston. Boston was touring behind their second album, and Hagar was supporting his album “Street Machine.”

THE BAND:
Sammy Hagar – Vocals, Guitar
Gary Pihl – Guitar, Vocals
Bill Church – Bass, Vocals
Chuck Ruff – Drums, Vocals
Alan Fitzgerald – Keyboards

It’s almost hard to believe that just seven years later, he would be touring with Van Halen as their new singer.

As we enjoy this video, we admit that the main thing this footage does for us that it makes us long for some never-seen Van Halen footage from this era. (Of course, the ’79 Van Halen footage shot in New York for Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert is unbelievably cool!)

In this video, Sammy is performing a fine set while opening for Boston. But we can’t help but think this is the same year as Van Halen’s first headlining tour, which was absolutely LIFE CHANGING, and is the reason we’re still working on a time machine in our spare time.

So while we appreciate this footage of Sammy early solo career, we would absolutely die to be able to see some great quality early Van Halen live clips we’ve never seen!

Ah, but that’s the subject of tomorrow’s VHND article. For now, let’s watch some rarely seen footage from early on in Sammy’s career, above.
