Fashion Designer to the Stars, Fleur Thiemeyer, was recently interviewed on “Final Resonance TV” for the Van Halen Stories Podcast.
In the interview, Fleur recalls being asked to work with Van Halen in 1978, just after the band released their first album.
In this exclusive new interview, she uncovers her memories of working with Van Halen to craft their early stage outfits and her friendship with David Lee Roth. A friendship that often included Sushi, Rollerskating, and discussing Japanese Culture, with the young, soon-to-be rock legend.
In the process of creating the clothing that would help launch Van Halen’s look and fashion to the world. She also recalls being asked to attend Edward Van Halen’s 23rd birthday celebration. At his birthday party, she would witness Eddie’s father play in a polka band and would have dinner with the Van Halen family.
Later, she would take her famous friend and client, Olivia Newton-John, to meet Van Halen at The Forum in Los Angeles, just after her own star had risen to dizzying heights following the success of the movie Grease.
Fleur was a mainstay of rock fashion in the 1970s and 1980s, helping popularize animal print, spandex and the patchwork jeans that Van Halen would incorporate into many of their 1980s outfits.
Her fashion credits are a who’s who in rock and pop, from first working with Bon Scott in 1968 prior to his years in AC/DC, to crafting Olivia Newton-John’s famous “Physical” video outfit and Motley Crue’s “Shout at The Devil” costumes. In 2026, her rock and roll fashion adventures will be revealed in her upcoming book.
