Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong says his first-ever concert experience was seeing Van Halen in 1984.
During Green Day’s recent appearance on Howard Stern’s show, Armstrong recalled the emotional experience.
“When I saw Van Halen in ’84 I was 12,” Armstrong told Stern. “They were my favorite band and…I cried. [laughs] ‘Cuz Eddie was so….it’s like his guitar playing came from a different place. He reinvented how to play guitar. But they also wrote great songs and I think that’s the main thing I took away from Van Halen is the songs, which are so fucking great.”
In the video above, Armstrong goes on to tell the story of an emotional conversation he had with Eddie back in 2007.
