David Lee Roth released a new video this week – his cover of the R&B classic “Mustang Sally”.
Dave’s version of the 1965 Mack Rice hit made famous a year later by Wilson Pickett includes various footage of “The Diamond One” over the years dating back to his early solo days. No details regarding the specific date of the recording or who is part of Dave’s band, but we do know he had released a one-minute clip of the song back in 2014 as part of a teaser video for his Roth Show podcast.
One other Wilson Picket recording Dave has put vocals to is “In The Midnight Hour” and this one includes Eddie, Alex and Michael alongside him. In 1982, Ted Templeman and Dave planned for the band to release their own cover of Pickett’s 1965 song on Diver Down, but Eddie turned down the idea, so the song wasn’t recorded. It was reportedly played live on the Diver Down tour at least once, though no known recordings exist. The next year, as the band began recording 1984, Dave and Ted again tried to get the band to record the song. This time, they succeeded. “In the Midnight Hour” was the very first song ever recorded in 5150 studios. This recording remains unreleased and among the rare gems fans hope to hear some day soon.
