Sammy Hagar On Eddie Van Halen’s Impromptu ‘Right Now’ Guitar Solo: ‘He Played Whatever Came Out’

by VHND — updated March 4, 2022 Leave a Comment

Sammy Hagar says Eddie Van Halen recorded the guitar solo for “Right Now” in his pajamas and slippers.

“Usually, Eddie had solos pretty locked down before we started recording but, on this song, he winged it,” Hagar told Guitar Player‘s Joe Boss. “He came out of the house in pajamas and slippers, went into the studio and played whatever came out. And as you might expect, it was pretty damn great.”

Hagar said Van Halen played a couple of takes of the guitar solo, both combined for the final version, which ended up on 1991’s For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.

“It sounded awesome,” added Hagar. “Because as everybody knows, Eddie never played a bad solo.”

Although Hagar said he’s proud of the lyrics he came up with for “Right Now”, he said it would have all been for nothing without the music created by Eddie and performed by Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony.

“The chorus, that iconic piano part. It was in the bag,” said Hagar. “The song would have been great if I sang about cat food.”
