Wolfgang Van Halen held an impromptu “Ask Me Anything” Q&A session with fans on Twitter and answered plenty of Van Halen-related questions along the way.
Here’s a look at some of the questions and Wolfgang’s answers regarding Van Halen and his “Pops” Eddie:
Your fave VH record?
Can’t pick just one. I love them all, but I’d go ‘Fair Warning’/’1984’ for Roth, and ‘FUCK’ (‘For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge’)/’Balance’ for Hagar.
First song u learned to play on guitar?
“You Really Got Me” was one of the first things I think. Always loved the percussive stabs Dad did in between the notes in the intro.
Of all your Dad’s songs, Which one makes you stop and smile remembering him?
“Not Enough” on ‘Balance’ is a beautiful song. Love hearing Pop on the piano. Also the melody to ‘Dreams’ is perfection.
Regarding the Van Halen “Kitchen Sink” tour, in your heart, do you think Dave would’ve agreed to split the stage with Sam?
I can’t speak for the others so I have no idea. But in my opinion it would have been a beautiful mess in the best way. It would’ve been a blast.
The ring your Dad wore on his right ring finger. Was that symbolic of anything? Just curious because he always wore it.
It belonged to his father.
Your thoughts on “316”? Both from a musical persective and from a son’s perspective, I understand if the second part is none of my business.
Before I was born he called the piece “Happy Blues” and I think that fits it perfectly. I’m honored it was dedicated to me.
What was your favorite song to play on stage with VH?
‘ADKOT’ (‘A Different Kind Of Truth’) tunes were usually the most fun to play. “Chinatown” and “The Trouble With Never” are a blast.
I’m sure you’ve answered this in the past, but what was DLR’s response to you joining the band on the reunion tour, as well as recording on ‘ADKOT’?
He was totally cool. I don’t think he would’ve partaken in it if he wasn’t ok with it!
Why didn’t you want to participate in the Grammy’s tribute to your dad? are they telling the truth that they asked you or no?
I stated that publicly myself. I’m my own musician, not my father. Especially right now as I’m trying to carve my own path and asking me to “play dad” felt like a tone-deaf ask so I declined.
Which VH album had the best sound/mix (to your taste)?
‘Balance’ probably
