The Gospel of David Lee Roth

by VHND — updated June 20, 2014 Leave a Comment

Author and storyteller Kambri Crews tells the story of how, as a teenager growing up in a poor family, David Lee Roth became her unconventional life coach. She started off incredibly attracted to the Van Halen singer, and then opened her mind to his words of wisdom, which inspired her and change her life.

“The only thing I had was my boombox, and my love for David Lee Roth—the best—the only—lead singer for Van Halen. Diamond Dave was not just eye candy to me. He was an intellectual. He was the only member of the band who knew what Zen was, and who knew how to spell it.” Watch the video to hear everything she says about Dave.

About Kambri Crews: She once lived with her deaf parents in a tin shed in Montgomery, Texas. She now owns and operates Ballyhoo Promotions, a PR and production company in New York City specializing in stand up comedy. She is also the author of the critically acclaimed memoir Burn Down the Ground and a renowned storyteller. She has performed on The Moth, Literary Death Match, Risk! and Mortified and has appeared at SXSW Comedy, UCB Theatre, Gotham Comedy Club. Also a public speaker, she has given speeches at the University of Texas, Texas Book Festival, University of Oregon, SXSW (South by Southwest), DeafHope, and many other schools, colleges, book festivals, and events.

About the artwork: The artwork below has nothing to do with Kambri Crews and her video, but we think it goes great with this post. The artist, TheSolidOne33, calls it “Gaze Unto Me And Be Awesome” because he calls Dave “St. Dave – Patron Saint of Frontmanship.” The artist jokes, “Who doesn’t love Van Halen? Terrorists. That’s who. Anyway, Van Halen is only Van Halen with David Lee Roth and he is back. So to honor his second coming I give you a little piece of blasphemy. Going to hell has never been so fun.”
