This Day in 1982: Eddie Van Halen Fractures Wrist

Eddie_Van_Halen_playing_fractured_wrist_cast_1982_1On this day in 1982, Eddie Van Halen hurt his wrist while “horsing around” in his hotel room. That same day, his right wrist was x-rayed at Hand Surgery Associates in New York, NY. A broken hairline fracture is found that results in the postponement of three shows on the band’s Diver Down tour (two in East Rutherford, NJ and one in Uniondale, NY). The tour resumed for a two-night stay at The Spectrum in Philadelphia, starting Oct 19th. Eddie was forced to wear a cast for some time afterwords.

Here’s a never-seen X-Ray of Eddie’s wrist, taken Oct 15th, 1982. (Yes, an exclusive Van Halen X-Ray!) And a very rare photo of Eddie Van Halen wearing the cast, taken sometime in October that year.

Eddie later revealed that the band was planning on recording several shows late in the tour for a potential live album, but that plan had to be shelved due to Ed’s injury.
