When Dweezil Zappa’s “Zappa Plays Zappa” tour hit Raleigh, NC, Earlier this month, Zappa shared the story of how he met Eddie Van Halen, much like when he shared the story during his tour three years ago. This time he played “Somebody Get Me A Doctor” as well as “Eruption”.
From Raleighmusic.com:
There was a musical aside when Dweezil grabbed a black guitar with yellow stripes that looked like a cross between Van Halen and Stryper. He told the tale of the day Eddie Van Halen unexpectedly called the house looking for Frank. After Dweezil told his mom the caller was legit, they invited him over to the house. Eddie arrived dressed in the jumpsuit from the Women and Children First album cover. Dweezil described it as if Superman had flown on his welcome mat. He expected a smoke machine when the icon entered. Eddie quickly became a friend of the family and produced “My Mother Is a Space Cadet” featuring Dweezil and his sister Moon Unit. Dweezil got choked up when he remembered that Eddie was the first person to call the house after Frank died. He composed himself and ripped off an amazing version of “Eruption.” He had learned all of Eddie’s fret fingering tricks. Things got light hearted with the arrival of David Lee Sloth. Roadie Pete Jones went beyond the call of duty with a massive blond wig and a spandex outfit that would make Richard Simmons cringe. Sloth belted out a fantastic version of “Somebody Get Me a Doctor.” This was the pure tribute band element of the show.
