Van Halen’s OU812 Released 25 Years Ago (Eddie/Mike Interview Unearthed)

OU812 25 years ago today, on May 24, 1988, Van Halen’s 8th album, OU812 (“Oh You Ate One Too”), was released. The album was the second to feature Sammy Hagar as lead singer. The number 1 album would go on to sell four and a half million copies.

Below you can hear a newly surfaced interview (uploaded just two days ago) with Eddie Van Halen and Michael Anthony, from the tail end of the OU812 tour.

The interview starts out with just Michael, and Eddie soon arrives and tells all about his past battles to get away from having to do cover versions, the shock of losing David Lee Roth, his own evolution as a guitarist, winning the battle with alcoholism, OU812, and much more. The interview was conducted by Osamu Masui on Jan. 23, 1989, at the Tokyu Capitol Hotel in Tokyo, Japan. Steve Harris interpreted. Listen and enjoy!

Also, in an interview with Martin Popoff, Sammy Hagar gives a thorough retrospective of Van Halen’s OU812 album. Read it here: The Recording Of OU812, In Sammy Hagar’s Words
