Unearthed Photos: Van Halen 1978 In-Store Appearance

Here’s something very cool from the VHND.com archives…15 photos of Van Halen making a special in-store appearance at a record store during their first world tour back in 1978!

A promotional flyer on the wall shows an image of Van Halen’s only album cover and reads “APPEARING IN STORE FRIDAY 2:30 – 4:00″. Check out all the teenage fans who showed up. Can you imagine hanging out with Van Halen for 90 minutes on a Friday afternoon in a record store?

Note that the band is drinking cans of Schlitz Malt Liquor – their favorite beer at the time. Also note all the signed albums and the promotional poster on the wall – all of which would be highly valued collectibles now, assuming any of those items are still around 33 years later.

We hope you enjoy all these never-before-seen photos! (Only ONE of which has ever circulated online before now).

A friend of mine had a band that was is discussions with VH to open for them. This was right around the time of these photos, maybe a year later. Mikey was the most easy going, Ed was very “shy”, Alex did most of the business talking, and Dave was an ass. His ego took up the whole bar. We had a bad impression of him. When Alex offered a band audition (they had seen the band live), they declined. Band suicide? nope. the guitarist would join up with Ozzy a few months later. Yeah, you know who I’m talking about.

I have run into Mike post VH with (dare I mention his name here?) Sammy. Both are still hang out and talk with fans kind of rockstars.

I was there then and am here now. No need to wax nostalgic on any lack of ‘corporatism’ then vs now, though it is tempting. Van Halen was definitely iconoclastic at the time, but you can find that kind of ‘who gives a s**t’ attitude in music now, too. You just gotta look. You had to look then, too, believe me. The pop music scene was just as commercial.

Hi! This is the “Julie” that David was signing an autograph for in those pictures…..I have to say these brought back memories from high school and that day….I am now 50 years old! I was 17 back then, a Junior in high school! I went to this autograph signing at Hastings Records in Amarillo, Texas when Van Halen made their first album. Me and one of the other girls in the picture went and partied with the boys later that day, just went and drank a few beers, and watched them fly their radio controlled airplanes in the parking lot of the Hilton….no “hanky panky” went on, but it was sure fun….then went and watched their concert the next day at the Hollywood Bowl….they were awesome, from what I remember…. :) Love the “BIG V”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is too cool. Was still a bit young in ’78 to catch the first wave of Van Halen, but how sweet would it have been to be in on the rise of these guys?!

    Thanks for posting!

That is definitely not Hollywood with all the denim and overalls! Great stuff!

Did anyone else think that the guy in the background in photo #14 looks like a young Eric Stoltz?! Kinda’ like his early 80′s stoner character from “Fast Times At Ridgemont High”! Awwwwesome….dude!

Well, it is not crowded in there … it clearly was early on, move forward 12 months and the place would have been a riot scene!

Met VH at an in-store in Dallas, same year. It was so fucking cool. While going through DLR’s web page photo’s, 2007, found a picture of the same Sound Warehouse appearance, with me and several friends looking “in awe” of the guys. What a trip!
