Readers of Rolling Stone Select Ten Favorite Van Halen Songs

Rolling Stone just released another Van Halen related Top Ten List. This list, however, was put together by their readers, so it’s not merely one person’s opinion, or a small group’s opinions, but rather, a list of what rock fans, in general, think about Van Halen songs. (Or at least what RollingStone.com readers think, in general).

From Rolling Stone:

The last two decades have been a strange time for Van Halen. The band’s last three tours have featured three different singers, and there hasn’t been an actual studio album since 1998. The band also made the highly controversial move to oust original bass player Michael Anthony in favor of Eddie’s teenage son, Wolfgang Van Halen. According to Anthony, they didn’t even tell him he was out – he had to read about it on the Internet. Despite all that, the band has an intensely loyal fan base. It’s impossible to argue with the quality of their early work, and it’s beyond debate that their 1978 self-titled LP is one of the greatest debuts in rock history. The group appears to be on the verge of announcing a new album, so we figured it was a good time to poll our readers to learn their ten favorite Van Halen songs. The results aren’t shocking. It’s 80% David Lee Roth era, 20% Van Hagar and 0% Gary Cherone era. That feels about right.

10. ‘Dreams’ (1986)

A lot of bands don’t survive the departure of a lead singer, especially one as charismatic and famous as David Lee Roth. But Van Halen brought former Montrose frontman Sammy Hagar into the band in 1985 and had a huge hit right away with 5150. “Best of Both Worlds” was a smash right out of the gate, and they scored again with “Dreams,” the follow-up single. They shot two videos for “Dreams.” One showed the Blue Angels doing aerial stunts, and the other showed them playing the song live at the Whiskey A Go Go, when they were celebrating the band’s 15th anniversary. We included the latter one here. Right around this time, David Lee Roth hired Steve Vai as the guitarist in his newly formed solo band. He started scoring hits of his own, and for a couple years it seemed like both Van Hagar and David Lee Roth would be equally popular, but that was not to be.

9. ‘Right Now’ (1991)

A lot of old-school Van Halen fans who felt the band sucked ever since David Lee Roth left secretly thought that “Right Now” was an amazing song. “That was the first serious lyric I had written for Van Halen,” Sammy Hagar writes in his memoir Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock. “It was a big statement.” The video – featuring text like “Right now someone is walking onto a nude beach for the first time” – went into heavy rotation on MTV in 1992, and it even won Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards. “It was the biggest video of our career,” writes Hagar. “Crystal Pepsi paid us 2 million bucks to use it as a soda pop commercial.” If you want to take a time warp back to early 1993, watch that Crystal Pepsi commercial.

8. ‘Eruption’ (1978)

This blazing instrumental on the first Van Halen album instantly established Eddie Van Halen as the new king of the electric guitar. The song had been a part of Van Halen’s stage show for years, but producer Ted Templeman heard it one day and decided it should go on the record before their cover of “You Really Got Me.” It’s been a key part of Van Halen concerts ever since. Eddie often gets credit for inventing two-handed tapping with the song, but the technique had actually been around for years. Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett was doing it was back in 1972, but he didn’t quite have the showman’s flair of Eddie Van Halen.

7. ‘Mean Street’ (1981)

This song first appeared under the title “Voodoo Queen” on Van Halen’s 1977 Warner Brothers demo CD. When working on their fourth album, Fair Warning, they wrote new lyrics for the song and gave it a new title. This became standard working practice for the band. Many of their most famous latter-day songs were cobbled together from old riffs and melodies. According to Sammy Hagar, that’s how the group is composing their new record with David Lee Roth. They must have been incredibly productive during those early days.

6. ‘Runnin’ With the Devil’ (1978)

It’s harder to think of a better first song from a band’s debut album than “Running With the Devil.” The song begins with the sound of car horns, which were actually from the band’s own cars. They connected them all with one car battery. A few years back, David Lee Roth’s isolated audio track from the song hit the Internet. It’s wildly entertaining. Take a listen here.

5. ‘Jump’ (1984)

Van Halen were a huge success before the release of 1984, but that album pushed them into the stratosphere. This song hit number one and, in many ways, has remained their most famous composition. The heavy synth sound turned off some older fans, but the video on MTV brought in countless new ones. Though the album kept producing hits, David Lee Roth quit the band after the supporting tour wrapped. Van Halen had many huge moments in the Sammy Hagar era, but they never quite seemed to own a moment in time again like they did when “Jump” was all over the radio and MTV in early 1984.

4. ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love’ (1978)

Another classic from Van Halen’s 1977 debut, “Ain’t Talking ’bout Love” is one of the handful of Roth-era songs that Sammy Hagar was willing to perform in concert during his time as frontman. Velvet Revolver played this at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Oddly enough, the only two members of the band to show up were Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony – and they were both out of the band by then.

3. ‘Hot for Teacher’ (1984)

“Jump” may have been a bigger hit from 1984, but “Hot for Teacher” was clearly the better video. The group had four young actors play miniature versions of themselves, and they turned a classroom into a strip club. MTV played it about five billion times that year. Just last week, Glee covered it. David Lee Roth was made for MTV, and in his solo career he built on the wacky persona from this video. The best thing about the video, however, may be watching Alex Van Halen attempt to dance. They supposedly filmed countless takes and were eventually forced to use what they had. The man’s a drummer, not a dancer. But it was 1984, and dancing was practically required in videos. Even Bruce Springsteen submitted.

2. ‘Panama’ (1984)

The big albums of 1984 produced a ludicrous amount of hits. Think about Born In The USA, Purple Rain, Like A Virgin, Footloose, Private Dancer, and Van Halen’s 1984. Now, at first glance one might think that “Panama” is a serious political song about the country of Panama. That would be incorrect. It’s about a car. More specifically, it’s about a car called the Panama Express that David Lee Roth saw race in Las Vegas. It also contains one of David Lee Roth’s greatest spoken-word moments: “Yeah, we’re runnin’ a little bit hot tonight. I can barely see the road from the heat comin’ off of it. Ah, you reach down between my legs. Ease the seat back…” The man has a way with words.

1. ‘Unchained’ (1981)

It’s not quite as famous as “Jump” or “Hot for Teacher,” but “Unchained” has frequently been voted the favorite song of Van Halen fans. During the interlude, producer Ted Templeman breaks in and says “Come on, Dave, gimme a break!” Dave responds with, “One break, coming up!” According to legend, Ted felt that Dave was being too over the top and he scolded him. The band liked the moment and kept it in. Recent evidence suggests that the bit was rehearsed, but it’s hard to say for sure. Like most things in the Van Halen world, there are two competing narratives of one event.

  • freddiegirl

Dirty Duck-I love your list but no “I’m the One”? That is VH to me..or more specific; that is Eddie! He is/was/always will be ‘the One’! In my mind it’s his signature track in a lot of ways and is always in my personal top 10!

To those who love “Dirty Movies”, that track is awesome. Back when I was dancing at a gentleman’s club to pay off school and credit card debt I would dance to that….it was a perfect track for that.. :D

I am glad that “Unchained” is number one on the list though. It’s not a bad list for an RS list.

    Mine in no particular order:

    1. I’m the One
    2. D.O.A.
    3. Little Guitars/Secrets I couldn’t choose between ‘em
    4. Mean Street
    5. Girl Gone Bad
    6. The Full Bug/Hang ‘Em High again..couldn’t choose…
    7. Women in Love
    8. Jamie’s Crying I know; overplayed but I still love it..
    9. Dirty Movies
10.ALL OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST!!!!!
    5.

  • http://aol 51504VH

there isn’t ONE Van Hagar song that comes even close to being good enough to share the same list as Classic Van Halen.

Nothing can bang with the Van Halen Six Pac baby!!!!!!!!!

    Van Hagar was so Emo…lol.

  • freddiegirl

Oh..and just for fun, my top 3 Van Hagar tunes:

    1. Best of Both Worlds
    2. Black and Blue I know; lyrics are awful but the music is awesome!
    3. Finish What Ya Started Eddie chicken picken’ and doing a great job of it too!

My least fav VH tunes top 3..

    1. Right Now They went corporate; couldn’t stand it..
    2. Dreams Guitar is awesome but I died a little when I first heard it..
    3. Jump My least fav Dave-era tune. I’m sorry to those who love it. I’ll keep it on if it comes on the radio but I always skip it when I play 1984. I still remember the sinking feeling I had that my band was going in a more pop direction and that they would never be the same again when I heard it and then saw Ed on keyboards in the video. I was right. I hope the new album doesn’t have too much keyboard in it.

  • http://facebook james

Alot of great songs but their should not be any hager songs on there………!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • JACK N SAM

When I saw this, without looking, I had a feeling Unchained would be number 1. The narratives are awful – Rolling Stone so sucks. Hard to believe Dance the Night Away didn’t make the list.

I can see Dreams and Right Now being voted as favorites – of the Van Hagar tunes they got the most rotation probably on MTV and radio. Not their best Van Hagar stuff though. Dreams is a good song, but for Van Halen, it is an embarrassment. I can’t believe someone didn’t stand up and say, ‘we ain’t fucking recording this song’

  • freddiegirl

Aaaaargh I forgot Atomic Punk! See..too many good songs! Just about all the CVH songs rock!

  • Leitus

I change “Dreams” for “On fire” and “Right now” for “Atomic Punk”
    ¡Say no to Van Hagar!
    ¡Yes for ROTH AND ROLL!
    Cordially

  • doubleb1975

another shit compiled list of people thinking their VH fans. Any true fan would of had Girl Gone Bad(probably the GREATEST Van Halen song that never get’s noticed), Drop Dead Legs, Secrets, Little Guitars (including intro), ect… Dreams, Right Here, Right Now, give me a freaking break, If I had to pick a hagar era song 5150 is also a song that get’s unoticed. ALSO interesting sentence during the Mean Streets paragraph about how hagar said old riffs are being used in the new material, How in the hell would he know. Anything to stay parallel with his former bandmates, wanker.

  • SPANKED

Do people really think VH is at the Grammy noms tonight?

Seems like a lame way to announce the album and tour.

    The lineup for tonight sucks.

    They dont belong there.

  • JasonBourne

All the CVH tunes are No.1 to me. But … I do like SOME of the Van Hagar era like Humans Being, the rare Crossing Over, most the tunes on FUCK and Balance, even some on VH3. Go Figure. Boys, hope the new album is a GRAND SLAM, knowing it’ll probaby be the last.

  • Rhymes

Everybody seemed to put out their favorites so I thaught maybe I should too. :)

    1. In a Simple Rhyme ( A great tune many really don’t listen to)
    2. Me Wise Magic (do I have to say anything?)
    3. Little Dreamer ( Classic, very classic and just awesome!)
    4. Drop Dead Legs (overall very cool tune, one of their best, no doubt about it)
    5. Take your Whisky Home (simply amazing)
    6. I’m the One (cool riffs and solos)
    7. Romeo Delight (one song that really grown on me, for good though)
    8. House of Pain (got to love Ed on this one, and the outro, awesome)
    9. Mean Streets (most epic outro EVER)
    10. Secrets (A pure diamond in my eyes)

Just some of my favorite CVH songs, It’s cool to see everybody favorites, I enjoy it. :) Let’s wait and see what VH got to say tonight? What do you say? ;)

  • garysamuelroth

I wish I knew when the poll took place so that I could put my votes in. Nevertheless, it was one of the most respectable lists I have seen come out of Rolling Stone in well over a decade. Plus, it was great to see Unchained at the top. It shows that lots of RS readers have a great VH palate.

I tried to shy away from the “related” link on the RS site about Sammy’s recent claims that their new music is just old music, but I couldn’t resist. Sammy needs to just shut up about anything related to VH and just focus on his own life. He made $80 million off his Cabo brand, has the Waboritas and Chickenfoot, and has launched a rum company. Yet, he seizes every opportunity to put down the band – Eddie in particular. It just proves that no matter what Hagar accomplishes, he can’t get over the split from VH. I am hoping that tonight will begin a new focus on Van Halen in its present form because I don’t need anymore “inside” information from Sammy Hagar.

  • JOHN

Impossible to make a list. One thing I love about VH, you never have to skip over songs on album or CD, they all are excellent. If I were to do a list about a 100 songs would be tied at number 1.

  • BrianH

For the Van Hagar years….how about Humans Being?
That tune does kick ass. Ed n Sam hated each other by then and the music ROCKED cuz of it.

  • John

Always tough to pick just 10 VH tunes, but here’s a shot:
    Running With The Devil
    I’m The One
    Feel Your Love Tonight
    Women In Love
    Unchained
    Mean Street
    Little Guitars
    Panama
    Drop Dead Legs
    Humans Being

  • BrianH

Crossing Over is cool for the first 2 mins or so…..then it sucks.

Aftershock is a really cool song, that guitar solo at the end just RIPS across the speakers.

    VH3? Uh….no.
Altho….MTV showed them down under giving a show and Ed played “Year to the day” the guitar work he did on that song during THAT concert was incredible. It was just him n Al, no singing. Awesome.

  • whispergirl

I’m on my way to get dressed!!!!! Doors open at 5:30 pm. Bye for now VH peeps!!!!!

  • Chris van harley

I’m thinking it does make sense to show up tonight. I mean I agree Vh doesn’t quite belong but that’s what’s so rock n roll about it. I mean it’s like Lemmy showing up at your sisters wedding. It blows all lameness out the room and leaves those beautiful Wtf just happened here faces on people.

  • BrianH

DLR at the grammy’s “Most of you have no idea who we are, but that won’t stop us from KICKING YOUR ASS with our latest record!”

  • Dorkmier

I notice I could turn on the radio and hear these songs also. I like the ones you don’t hear all the time, that is why I don’t care for these kind of lists.

  • Sean

I’d like to mention Amsterdam. I love rocking out to that.

  • ricky alexander

I agree with John M. way up at the top here.Sammy keeps making statements about Eddie based on the condition he was in when they last spoke, nearly 8 years ago.Since then, they’ve had a great tour,Ed has appeared on TV several times and a bunch of magazine covers looking clean and mean, and I know Sammy has seen this.I use to like Sammy, but not anymore. He is a bitch!!!

  • Alton

This was a tough one for me, keeping it down to 10. It also changes depending on my mood, but I think these are the ones. You’ll also notice quite a few from Fair Warning. I absolutely love that album!

    1. Hear about it later
    2. Mean Street
    3. Light up the sky
    4. Panama
    5. Push comes to shove
    6. Unchained
    7. Women in love
    8. Girl gone bad
    9. Romeo Delight
    10. Atomic Punk

  • Kevin

Quickly and this is tough. No particular order just the 10 that come to mind fast.

    1) Ain’t Talkin’ About Love
    2) Everybody Wants Some
    3) I’ll Wait (underrated)
    4) Ice Cream Man (classic Dave tune)
    5) Don’t Tell Me What Love Can Do (very underrated IMO)
    6) Top Of The World (#5 and #6 are two best Hagar songs)
    7) Dreams
    8) Unchained
    9) Jump
    10) And The Cradle Will Rock

    Do I have to stop??

  • Mr. Bookworm

Ok, I posted the following thread on VH-Links a looooong time ago…in 2000 when all the rumors were swirling around about Dave being back in the band, and everyone was frustrated with the lack of information coming from VH, wondering if a new album was coming anytime soon, etc. On the eve of (hopefully) a major announcement from the band, it just feels appropriate to post it again here after all this time. It sums up exactly how I feel about my favorite band, so I hope you all enjoy. It’s word for word the same post I made 11 years ago, and it all still rings true for me. Just thought I would share.

The thread was titled “Why I Will Continue to Wait…and wait….and wait…”
…for another whole year if I have to. I don’t want to, but I will. But in the meantime I’ll settle for what I already have. I’ll pop in some old cd’s and listen. Kick back in my easy chair with an ice cold beer and smile as my stereo pumps the eerie, ungodly squeals of Eddie’s guitar on “Intruder” through my speakers…get up and jump around and air guitar like an idiot when the bone crunching sound of “Panama” kicks it into high gear…bob my head and sing at the top of my lungs to the unapologetic pop sound of “Jump”. Because this is the music I love. This is the Almighty Van Halen.

In the grand scope of things, I know, it’s not that big of a deal. It is, after all, only rock n’ roll. It’s not more important than life itself. But just the same, music is an important PART of life. It compells emotion, fuels thought and debate, and inspires youth. For me, Van Halen’s music has done that more than any other.

I can remember many a summer weekend, putting the top down and crusing down to the shore blasting “Everybody Wants Some!” so loud it made old people cringe. I remember the first time I made out with a girl, when I was barely 13 years old and at one of my first “cool” parties, with “Little Dreamer” playing in the background. I can remember being terribly depressed after the death of a family member and listening to “Feelin’”, the raw emotion of that song making me feel just a little bit better. There are so many memories I have, good and bad, and it seems that there was always a VH song that went with the situation. Their music is the soundtrack of a life, and a great life at that.

You can have your Rolling Stones, you can have your Aerosmiths, you can have your AC-DC’s…all good bands, don’t get me wrong. But I’ll take Van Halen over any of them any day of the week. For me, no one’s music has stood the test of time better. It has always been there, and will continue to be there, regardless of their future work, reguardless of how many lead singers they go through, until the end of time (or, at least until the end of MY time).

Some may say I am being a sentimental weenie, and maybe I am. Like I said, it’s only rock n’ roll. But there are a lot of bands out there, putting out a lot of music, and Van Halen’s is the only music that has been able to touch my life in this way. I believe that says something. Maybe a small something, but there it is nonetheless.

So, my friends, I will wait. Not always happily…not always with the utmost patience…but I will wait. As long as Eddie and the boys need me to wait. Their music has always been there for me, so now I’ll be here, waiting for it. And in the meantime…I’ll just rock on with what I got, baby!

I just felt compelled to say a little something. I don’t know why. Sorry if this is a waste of space.

    Rock on!

  • http://vhnd.com Full-Bug85

Have fun tonight whispergirl! Hope we’re all cheering up a storm as tho we were at the 1984 show together! I’ve heard they won’t be performing live, but still hopefully the new video? At least a freaking announcement. Wouldn’t it kick ass to see Dave jump out not the stage the way he used to jump off the drums? That would kick all their asses! lol!

Can’t believe I forgot I’m the one, unchained and little guitars on my “short” list! Those are three more of my favs! Sure there’s more I forgot to but hey man, I was in a hurry! Couple more hours to go and it feels like days!

  • Shine On

    1. Humans Being
    2. 5150

    8. Little Guitars

  • Diver Down

All of these songs are great but I love to add at least one new one to this list
from the upcoming Van Halen album. A toast to new classics yet to be heard.
Hope we get some news tonight at the Grammy nominations.

How do you narrow it down to 10 favorite VH tunes? That list now for me was harder than a 25 page report on salmon and the columbia river I did in college. Van Halen rules.

Van Hagar would be–Aftershock, Poundcake, This Dream is Over, 5150, DOnt tell me, Judgement Day, Feelin, Amsterdam. I like a lot of the music of Van Hagar, but could do without the cheesy lyrics. Up until his latest Rolling Stone comments I didn’t mind him at all, still think he has a great voice just writes dumb lyrics, but he is so threatened by the hurricane that is coming he has to try to make Ed look bad, as if Ed himself didn’t already do that in 2004. It’s over man. I am embarrassed for him.

  • BubbaCo

At least they didn’t put “I’ll Wait” on the list.

That’s always been my “get up quick and run to grab another beer during the show” song.

  • greg

I love CVH waaaaay more than Sammy, but if i had to pick one sammy song it would be Sucker In A 3 Piece. Eddie plays some wicked guitar on that. Just wish it was remastered, as it seems the cd isnt nearly loud enough

Women in Love, Feel your love tonight, and Jamie’s crying, would be somewhere on my list!

  • Curly

Hagar does not belong on this list, he had his moment but it wasn’t as good as any of the Roth songs! I know others who say Hagar has a stronger voice, this may be true but did you ever hear him sing “Aint Talking Bout Love? It is horrible! Ok now I got that out of my system here is my top 10 if that is possible:

    1. Aint Talkin Bout Love
    2. On Fire

    AHL-RIGAHT!

  • John M.

@Dirty Duck I just logged on to vent my grammy frustration. I saw your post. No I liked jump right away but I was definately thinking what just happened?!
I got really turned off by Why Cant this be love though. It was like Its got what it takes… and I just thought, I dont think it does. Dreams was released next and I let out a sigh of relief that although they were different, they were still good.
I had 5150 the day of release.
What the hell was the grammys thinking?!! I did see that old rap band reunited but did they ever have songs titled Jump and Dance the night away?

  • http://vhnd mike
