VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Duped By The Grammys?

Rampant rumors have Van Halen making an appearance at the Grammy Nominations Concert tonight to announce their forthcoming album and tour. It was the Grammy’s themselves who started the rumor.

Yet some of our sources have been telling us that they can’t confirm the rumored appearance, and others have flat out told us that it was never anything but a rumor in the first place, started by the Grammys. Whatever the case, other than the original rumor, we haven’t heard anything that would lead us to believe that the band is involved in the show tonight. Put it this way… if the band does actually make an appearance they are much better at keeping secrets than we’ve ever imagined!

The only good news today is that we’ve heard that JANUARY is the month that the band plans to make their official announcement about their album and tour. The album and tour are still scheduled for early 2012.

  • DeezNutz

Butthurt fans need to stop bitching. You are the dumbasses who believe all the rumors the media presents to you. Then you speculate there must have been some validity to said rumors….Why? Also, everybody is taking this “reunion” garbage way too far. The band reformed and made it very clear at their press conference for the 07′-08′ tour that they were a new band and would continue. That’s good enough. Stop with all the speculation and complaining.

  • McQuestion

Hmmmmm, just occurred to me, perhaps the recent private performance for Interscope was merely a highly paid private performance.

There is no evidence of a new release, new album, tour or video.

    None.

  • John M.

@McQuestion: Heres a Mcanswer, your long winded diatribes are only causing the rest of us to avoid reading what you have to say.

  • Dave

Y’know, I just can’t be bothered anymore. This year I’ve listened to tonnes of new music by numerous bands, I’ve been to watch Mr, Big and Iron Maiden. I’ve still got the Thunder to see this Christmas, and then Chickenfoot next year.

As I live in the UK, it’s easy to switch off from this band.

This was just the last straw for me, allowing myself to get excited about a rumour just because it might take me a step closer to my favourite band?

I’ll just enjoy the active bands and then maybe I’ll get surprised one day when I stumble over a CD of there’s that I didn’t know was out, and hey, I just might like it. Tell you what though, I’d rather spend my time listening to actual music rather than reading about stuff that’s never gonna happen!

Enjoy the ride, the rest of you, I’m out!

  • andy

whispergirl – sending you my best wishes. I’ve read other sites and the evil sniping that goes on. But you and a few others seem so positive i hope you get what you want. You deserve so much better.

    From Rolling Stone
“Last night I tuned into the Grammy nominations special waiting to see an “iconic group” announce their “monumental” reunion. I saw Lady Gaga sing with Sugarland. I saw a lot of Bruno Mars. I saw the Band Perry inexplicably cover Tom Petty’s “Free Falling.” I saw Usher perform with Mike Stoller and Valerie Simpson. I didn’t see anything resembling a reunion.

What happened? “There was the expectation that the artist involved and we would be ready to announce,” Grammy President Neil Portnow told the Telegraph. “We were genuine about the intention and discussion, but the time frame has moved.”

Many people thought that Van Halen was supposed to be the band, largely due to the fact that the Grammys sent out this not-so-subtle Tweet on November 3rd: “Who do u predict the reuniting band will be @ GRAMMYnoms? Does this hint make u wanna ‘Jump’ & ‘Dance The Night Away?’” This seemed to confirm beyond any doubt that Van Halen was the band, but what many people missed is that the Tweet also linked to a Hitfix story that guessed it was Van Halen. The fine folks at the Grammys merely sent out that Tweet to get people talking, and the Van Halen song titles were a reference to the HitFix prediction. They wanted to open up a whole Twitter-wide guessing game.

Unfortunately, all it did was make everyone think that Van Halen were locked in. According to industry sources I’ve spoken to, Van Halen were never – at any point – lined up to appear at the Grammys special.

It’s hard to be 100 percent certain, but I’m extremely confident that it was supposed to be the Beach Boys. Their 50th anniversary reunion tour this summer is one of the worst-kept secrets in the music business right now. The Los Angeles Times agrees with my assessment. “Sources close to the show said that talks with the band – reportedly the Beach Boys – fell apart in the 48 hours leading up to the nomination show,” the paper reported this morning. “There’s hope, however, that the Beach Boys will still be available for the Feb. 12 Grammy Awards.”

Expect an official announcement of the Beach Boys reunion tour sometime in the next couple of months. This Grammy debacle didn’t exactly get things off on the right foot. One can only imagine what crazy behind-the-scenes drama caused them to pull out. ”

Well put James.I think they saw the lack of talent, douchbag presenters, and lame preformances and said F**K this. What a waste of an hour of anybodys time. Man does music suck really bad this day in age.

Apparently, it was supposed to be the Beach Boys the whole time. See the article here.

I’m glad I didn’t watch the show last night!

Interestingly, a piece put on RollingStone.com this afternoon, the Grammy tweet that referenced Jump and Dance the Night Aways(not the original one about the mystery iconic band that was reuniting) was actually linked to something called Hitfix, which was trying to stir up interest by GUESSING who the band would be. So take that for whatever it’s worth. Adding to the zaniness, the writer says the iconic band reunion referenced in the original tweet was supposed to be the BEACH BOYS!

So just let that sink in. What a cluster for all involved.

I wonder if the same meltdown is happening on Beach Boys fan sites right now…..

  • http://www.ievolvedintothis.com Ken A

The Grammy Org were the only ones who posted any info about this. They never issued a contraction to disconfirm that info. It’s their bad. End of story.

Also notice that VHND never posted any confirmation from its “sources close to the band” (i.e. the band). There was never any hint of the band’s involvement from any other source.

If the Grammy’s were courting the band and the band said no, it’s on the Grammy’s. If the band said yes with the proviso that the Grammy’s were responsible for informing the public, then had to cancel for whatever reason, then the Grammy’s did not keep up with that responsibility. And if the Grammy’s acted without the band’s consent… well, there you go.

And while I fully understand the anger that arises from disappointment, the band wishes to remain quiet until it is good and ready. Should it have to violate its own wishes for privacy anytime some douchebag organization starts a rumor?

  • garysamuelroth

It is really interesting to read the range of emotions on what turned out to be a non-VH-event. I haven’t seen this level of rants since the old VHML days.

But the rants are good because anticipation of a new album and tour from a renewed VH is immense. It is so immense that we skip the fine print when things like this happen. Van Halen didn’t say to us that they would be there. VHND, as awesome as you are, is not an official Van Halen site and doesn’t speak for the band. All of the posted anger and disappoint reminds me of those facts.

Duped by the Grammys? Possibily. But as much as I wanted to see them last night, I’d rather that they continue to focus their energies on creating a great concert experience for us with some brand new music. I honestly believe it will be worth the wait.

  • Dooley

This is obviously Sammy Hagar’s fault.

  • Whiskey

    It’s okay, because…

    I’LL WAIT!!!

@KTC5150 — When I was chugging my drink before sitting down, I saw the production monitors. One of the monitors, on the last act (which was still up on the monitor after the before-show rehearsal) said “verse 1″ of Marry the Night. That was the closing Lady Gaga song. Lada Gaga and the woman from Sugarland (Jennifer Nettles) sang the ENTIRE song, not just the first verse. (My friend pointed this out to me at lunch; I remember it too because we were looking at the monitor to see if we could see the name Van Halen.) I think that song was supposed to be shorter and they rehearsed it as the entire song (verse 1 and verse 2) to take up time. Also, LL Cool J’s rap (where he went up to Bruno Mars and that tacky chick with the Barbie necklace) seemed like stretching. The show was tightly choreographed within the one-hour mark. At the hour mark, though, the show just seemed to stop, like it left off its finale. I think VH was supposed to close. The way the show stopped was sort of odd. We were all sitting there saying hey are we supposed to get up now??? (That’s when the producer dude said you can stay for a concert-set by The Band Perry — who incidentally played Fat Bottomed Girls, the one appearance of a rock song).

Also, remember the part where Usher sang with the two pianos? Before that, the badly-dressed producer dude came on (in your commercial break) and told everyone to hold the applause at the end and that they were going to fade to black. I think he would have told us HOW to applaud for Van Halen. I’m having an even weirder after-feeling about this than I was before. I feel like I’m having a big hangover. One of you compared this to the woman with the bad husband to whom she smiles waiting for acceptance. It’s not that. It’s like your child is making a bad decision and you cannot stop it because the child is off somewhere.

The more and more time goes on, boys, the more upset I am FOR (not at) Van Halen. Something is wrong.

@BrianH: yes on the legal aspects. They don’t just cancel out on either end.

@Ducky. From a legal standpoint the Grammys cannot make such a rumor.

Something is wrong. Notice how the news now says the “timing” was wrong with the incinuation that the Van Halen appearance will be for the February show? This is really confusing. I feel like I am in the middle of it because I saw it soooo first hand. Perhaps that is not a bad thing. I REALLY WISH I could help. I hope this is just a sign that the album is not done, perhaps more songs, remix or something, and that’s the reason for the not ready. (Especially when Dave maintains his own get ready stance.) In my world if I want to get out of something, I have to disclose reasons. This is soooo odd.

@McQuestion. You are analyzing this a lot. You should have been with me. There is “evidence” of a new album. We just don’t have the luxury of hearing it. But sort-of agreeing, I think it’s the “album” — not the band, not the announcement, not the Grammys — that is not ready, no matter what anything says.

Others. I don’t think this is from either Dave’s or Ed’s egos. I think there is more work to be done on the album. Or there is more work to be done from the business-legal end. Lawyers have to be involved to have something this screwed up remain a secret. I sincerely hope Van Halen gets their work done, whatever it is. I want for them what they want: (1) for their legacy to last and last with a new album to blow the minds of the youngsters and broaden their audience from just “us”; (2) for us to be the forerunners of “the fans who never left” (we’re bitching, but certainly not leaving) to show a new generation the Mighty Van Halen. My 27-year-old friend who went with me is listening to VHI as we speak as the soundtrack to her work day.

WHEN Van Halen gets it together, I WILL BE THERE ACTING ALL GOOFY AND WASTING MORE MONEY TO SEE THEM. AS DISAPPOINTED AS I AM, AND BOY AM I, TO ALL OF YOU, I WOULD DO IT OVER AGAIN JUST FOR THE CHANCE TO HAVE SEEN THEM. THINK WHAT YOU WOULD BE WRITING TO ME IF THEY HAD BEEN THERE. I WAS REALLY CLOSE, AND THAT INFORMAL ATMOSPHERE WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY COOL. IMO LADY GAGA WOULD HAVE BEEN HONORED TO BE THERE WITH THEM TOO (OR AT LEAST HER LONG-HAIRED GUITAR PLAYER WOULD HAVE, AND I’M GOOD WITH THAT). THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR THE LOVE, FLOWERS AND CONDOLENCES!!!!

VH — go to work and PLEASE make us proud. We are waiting. One of us with less money now, but waiting. Go bring it. I have a silver sparkly dress waiting for your concert in 2012. I’ll be overdressed, but this is appropriate considering….

    @McQuestion…

Very well stated(about 2 McQuestions posts back, that long one). Problem is that too many will not read it and of those who read, even less will agree or understand.

I do not come here for info on VH. That would be useless regardless of the sites name. It’s more a site for comments, lists, merchandise and the occasional rant.

If I want a VH announcement, it better come from VH, live or taped video. Watching Eddie’s mouth speak the words.

No media or website will ever get it right. That is the state of all media on all subjects today.

Lenny Kravitz said it best in the song “What the Fuck are We Saying”. The line is.. “They whined us up, put us down and watch us go.”

It will happen when Eddie says it will happen and not a day before, until then…(4745+/- days and counting)

Some of you guys take Rock and Roll way too seriously. These guys sing about getting laid and drinking too much. Relax, take their advice, and everything will be alright.

We’ll still all be as giddy as school girls when we hear that first track with the growl of Eddie’s guitar and Alex pounding the drums in the intro. Then when Dave comes in to sing the first verse, all will be right in the world for that moment.

    McQuestion says:

“There is no evidence of a new release, new album, tour or video.

    None.”

My friend, you hit the nail on the head!

In fact, when has any member of Van Halen, or VH camp for that matter, come forward to announce any of those things: a new album, a tour, a video, an announcement, etc.?

NEVER!!! NO ONE!!! Not Ed, Dave, Al, Wolf, management, nor PR rep. NO ONE!!!

Why the heck is everybody getting so uptight about something that was never, ever mentioned oficially?!!!

Therefore, lay off the stupid comments and remember, it’s nothing but rumors!!!

I think the only one who has said anything about an album recently is Hagar, but then again, are is words credible??? NAHHHHHHH!!!

The day any of you here it straight from VAN HALEN, and it turns out that they don’t deliver, then… and only then… can all of you haters moan, bitch, gripe and complain!!! As of now your moaning, bitching, griping and complaining are in vain!!!

    OUT!!

  • 78=VH=84

@ Sabah. You said, “I really don’t care if a thirty year old picture of Eddie is in Rolling Stone or Guitar Player magazine. What I want to see is Eddie telling us when the new album is coming out. But Eddie cannot even do that”.

For you information Eddie has in the past (early 2000′s) promised new music, albums etc, yet it fell through to either his cancer problems, marriage breakdown, mother’s death, ending contract with long time recording company WB & his drug & alcohol demons, yet you say Eddie should throw us a bone or something & let us know when the new album is to be released? Give me a break! Don’t you think Eddie has learnt from the past of trying to please the fans & promising new music yet it was probably the wrong thing to do on his behalf at that time in his life. It just added more pressure on himself when he wasn’t fit enough at the time to deal with it. In a nutshell the 2000′s weren’t kind to Eddie personally & professionally. Or more like the mid 90′s. I think Eddie was really hoping that in 96′ when Dave came back in he really hoped that things can work with Dave & him again. They made 2 great songs for their best of but things fell apart at the MTV awards. That took its toll on him which probably resulting in him going on the booze again.

Like I said in my first comment here, Eddie is damned if he does & damned if he doesn’t. At times I don’t know why he even bothers to even pick up his guitar & play just to please these idiots who’ll complain about anything he does. And one of those idiots that is no surprise to all here is Sammy Hagar!! He’s come out and said “Van Halen should make a great album they’ve had enough time” or “VH owe their loyal fans” or “Me & Chickenfoot have done 2 albums in 3 years” or even “The world needs an Eddie Van Halen making music again”. Is starting to sound like Days oF Our Lives?!! Sammy firing off his big mouth because he can’t handle it being out of VH & is hell on bent on trying to ruin Eddie’s glorious music career to date!! He even write a BS book about it, thats how obsessed he is about EVH. I think Sam is more pissed at EVH because when EVH was asked in his last interview in Rolling Stone if he heard CHickenfoot’s new album Eddie answered that he hasn’t heard nothing of Chickenfoot but wished them well. Now is that class!!! But for Sammy that wasn’t enough. You see Sammy is insecure, he always wants people to say how good he is. He even said he wrote his BS bio book because not many people knew much or even cared enough to know anything about his career. You see! Thats called ‘Insecurity’.

But what pissed off me most about Sam is he took great amusement in fact he & Mike laughed their asses off when the Aussie Soundwave festival for which Van Halen were scheduled to perform got cancelled due to the amateurish promoter’s failure to secure a 2nd headline act. Can you believe that? Sam takes great amusement in seeing other people’s misfortunes & failures. Word of advice for you scumbag Sammy, never-ever take another persons misfortune & wish bad things on them because Karma will get you good. I’m so glad he’s out of Van Halen for good. The VH/Sam reunion of 2004 is erased from my memory, it never happen & I hope Eddie doesn’t allow this corporate slut Sammy Hagar ever go near Van Halen.

  • RockinDonkey

I blame myself for falling for the rumor. I should have realized when there was no word from Van Halen to confirm the rumor that it was just the Grammy’s trying to get people to watch their show.

Didn’t Ed vow never to do another awards show after the MTV fiasco in ’96?

  • Atomic Pete

Though the Grammys never actually said “Van Halen”,
they issued misleading information by saying “Jump” and “DTNA”.
I don’t blame VH for anything but I think they should be pissed about their fans being misled.
Everyone’s just really disappointed and can’t wait for the new album., hence all the negative comments.
It would just be nice if they said “something” about “anything”.
    Peace!

  • http://www.derekjoebrockett.bandcamp.com derek joe brockett

It is obvious to me now that this is a psych-op. The Tweet forced some (read: some not all) Van Halen fans to undergo the full hour of torturous exposure to popular music circa 2011 so that, once we finally hear the new song/album, we will appreciate it that much more deeply.

  • Kayser Sozay

@whispergirl – “No normal lawyer or publisist allows someone else (the Grammy’s) to use a name (and they were, indirectly counts) without contolling that. So VH still needs new advisors.”

Good point there. However, I suspect VH probably have competent people in their camp – only these people are constantly tearing their hair out because their client keeps changing their minds about every damn thing at the last minute. In light of the beating VH has taken over this – not just here but all over the media – if the Grammy’s threw that teaser out there without permission of the band, we’d have known it. It honestly seems that something went down late in the game that caused them to pull out. The fact nobody knows what it is suggests it was something the band would really rather not talk about or else I think we’d have heard by now. Why would VH want to take this lashing in the court of public opinion if they could easily explain it away? Either they won’t do it because it’s something they don’t want getting out (like Ed and Dave are butting heads again or, God forbid, Ed’s fallen off the wagon) or they don’t give enough of a damn to. Either way it’s troubling to this VH fan.

Sam talks too damn much about VH to be sure but I’m starting to believe he’s spot on about how dysfunctional VH is with the fans. He and Mike would know. People just don’t want to hear it from him.

    McQuestion – good post.

  • Robert

Thanks guys. At some point, are we not supposed to get over VH?

  • http://www.vanhalennation.com PapaDon5150

The Grammys knew they had a shit lineup for their show….. So they used VH to gain some viewers….knowing all us asses would tune in. Smart by them, but a bullshit move.
On top of that…. No matter how many fans on here say there done with VH, we both know that’s just as much bullshit as the rumor!! Tomorrow well all be back on herw checking for an 7pdate.

  • Matt from Australia

^&%&*&#@$^*@&^#@*(!(!&^HJDHH&&#&*TTE^GGE^……..yeah, I’m frustrated! Once again, VH leave their fans in the dark. Somehow, a January announcement does not get me excited. In fact I feel the exact opposite, I couldn’t care less anymore.
If they weren’t going to appear at the Grammy’s you’d think their “management” could have said something publicly. VH’s silence on everything says either two things to me(or both):-
    1. The whole situation with Roth is so delicate/volitile, they’re too afraid to say anything incase it all implodes.
    2. Or, Van Halen just don’t give a shit about their fans.

    You guys…
My friend (who I went with to the Grammy’s), give her a name other than knowsnothingaboutvanhalengirl (which she said would be her name)??? has been all over the Internet today looking for why Van Halen was not there or if they were supposed to be there. (For those of you who don’t know, I work with her.) Isn’t this a good use for a young person’s analytical brain?

She has listened to all of VHI and likes it. (That was her initiation today.) She has sent me three links to news articles. First, she believed the rumor that it was to be the Beach Boys (reported today by Rolling Stone and the LA Times), but then came to me about 2 hours ago and said she does not think that (now) because the Grammy dude said the band was a 70s-80s band (in other interviews). We had a work thing go away now, and I just sent her an email telling her to stop working on something. She emailed back with another link saying she WILL get to the bottom of this. I emailed her telling her: congratulations, you are now officially a Van Halen fan because this is what we do, try to figure out the rumors based around this crazy band to find the real answers. She sent back an email that said “yeah” and that she no longer stands by her statement (which she made earlier that Van Halen was not relevant in this day and time) because this is the biggest story to come out of the Grammy’s. She thinks that this WAS the plan. Out of the mouths of babes. Out of the mouths of babes. We have now, our youngest indoctinee. A 27-year-old CVH fan who is a chick who likes Aint Talking Bout Love. See the Grammy’s were productive after all.

  • EvhMess11

Ton of information to take in here….however a reality check is necessary for all us adult VH fans…..first, the players and ego’s that existed in 1984 are still in play today….even more so…..we have EVH and DLR to thank for their ability to put this behind and move the VH organization ahead….second, I saw EVH in Port Jeff NY during his treatment time..early 2000′s….sat next to him at Pace’s Steak House….the fact that we are in the position we are today is nothing short of the determination of the man….his desire to play with his son…..this gets lost in all fans selfishness and his former bandmates….I will never, ever buy another Sammy product…no understanding how his book comments ever equal the success he shared with EVH..or why he needed to kick a soul in the back when he was down….overall point being, there are more important things to both VH-EVH and the fans then the new record/tour…..not being an apologist just a realist….

  • PN

Good point everyone who says fans have no right to complain.

It’s so obvious it’s the fans fault when Van Halen does nothing.

  • toomuchdisfunction

That’s it. I’ve had it. It’s too frustrating to keep trying to follow this band. The worst thing in the world is to be strung along. I wish they would have just retired 15 years ago instead of stringing everyone along and keeping their hopes up. They’re not doing it on purpose – I’m not blaming them — it’s just because that they became completely and totally disfunctional, and it’s been painful for the fans to watch and try to follow. And I’m tired of them bringing me down. So I’ll just stick with listening to the old albums and watching the old videos and remember them as they were — the greatest rock band of all time.

  • G-G-G-G-Get Out And Push!

McQuestions main post is perfect. Well done, my friend.

I also think theres logic to the Columbia/CBS connection that has been mentioned by some.

I also… (again..Prince Of The Also’s today!)do not feel that the candy pfuff that was trotted out in the noms show was a good fit for Van Halen. Gaga aside- she’s the real deal- for the Gaga haters, YouTube a few gaga interviews and you will be massively impressed with her intelligence and artistic integrity.

But back to McQuestion- that point that no news is coming out officially is a very good one. We love these guys and wish that they would love themselves enough to take the leap together into the icon status they fully deserve. There’s still not a band on the planet that can match them. And if it all falls apart and nothing happens? Thats cool- because the crazy interpersonal relationships are HELPFUL in making
Van Halens best music. Its the irritation of the grain of sand that is needed to make the pearl.

I do wonder, however, about the cancellation of Soundwave in Australia (I had my tickets bought to that- gah), the lack of meaningful updates on the official website, and the lack of VH being listed on the Interscope web site. The thing that gives me hope is Daves web site. I doubt Dave would put his neck out unless things were in motion. Well…maybe they were when Get Ready first appeared, but a lot of time has passed since then and who knows what has transpired since then. Wolf, if you are reading this, I for one think you are a fantastic musician. Some fathers and sons play baseball… you and yours “throw the ball” in arenas jammed with loyal fans. See if your dad wants to get off the couch watching ESPN and go into the backyard and play! I can say that- because I have a son too…and I am guilty of ESPN on the couch wayyyy to much lol!

Also… (make that now KING Of The Also’s!)…. for the people that are trashing the new music because it is supposedly old tunes redone- big deal- thats what musicians have been doing since the first caveman did the devil horns to a bone being struck on a stretched animal hide. Doesnt matter when the artist made the music, they can use it whenever they want- even 30 years later- its still their music. A perfect example is the Stones’ Tattoo You- they felt like they were going to get slammed for it because it was made up of a lot of old riffs leftover from previous recordings- and ended up being hailed (rightly) as a great album.

    We need a forum.

    McQuestion is my hero!

@Kayser Sozay. Agreed. Silence IS crafted by the “suits”, lawyers, publicists, agents, etc.

I think the situation is really odd. Now there is this stuff about the Beach Boys. They are being blamed as the icons that backed out. What do you think about the Rolling Stone article VHND is now running with?

The bottom line: the biggest Grammy story is not the show, not the Beach Boys, but Van Halen (and us silly upset fans).
