VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Van Halen Turbo-Pop

Here’s a tale from Van Halen’s 1979 “World Vacation” tour, from David Lee Roth’s autobiography “Crazy from The Heat”:

Pretty soon, we were opening for bigger and bigger bands. In early ’79, we were playing at the Los Angeles Coliseum, some ninety thousand people, Aerosmith was top bill. And I had an idea of a way to make an entrance, having gone down to the stadium to see the lay of the land some weeks earlier. There’s a stairway comes from the great arches down to a landing- it’s a big landing, visible to everybody in the stands- and then another three hundred steps down to the football field where the stage was.

The idea was to park a Volkswagen on that landing, and since we knew the people who were running the PA system, we would have them make announcements all throughout the afternoon and into the evening that whoever it was from the Aerosmith team that owns the yellow Volkswagen, could you please move it? This is where they were stacking some equipment, whatever, it was visible to all ninety thousand people. It’s like up and behind the actual stage.

We rented an actual Sherman tank- in Hollywood, you can rent anything you want. The theory being that after all of these announcements throughout the day and the night, the lights would go down, they’d go, “Ladies and gentlemen… da-da-da… Van Halen,” the spotlights would hit us and the tank would come out from under a cover on that landing, run right over the Volkswagen and we’d pop out of the tank and run down the stairs to the stage.

We bought two old used Volkswagens so we could test one on a Sunday afternoon. We went down to the stadium, the band got in the tank. The driver, little southern guy, with a Rawlings football helmet on, he’s telling us all the movies this tank had been in, “Oh, yeah, The Longest Day, Kelly’s Heroes.”

We had taken the engines and the glass out of the VWs, but otherwise they were completely intact. You would never know the difference from two feet away. We all got in the tank and ran over the Volkswagen. This was before monster truckism graced our popular culture- monster trucks, bog racing, tractor pulls, I call these “turbo-pop entertainment.” This was pre-turbo-pop entertainment.

That Volkswagen smashed flat like a bad textbook, lug nuts shot off of those wheels in excess of two hundred miles an hour, everybody was ducking and jumping out of the way. I still have the door from that Volkswagen at my house, one of the souvenirs that I saved. The door burst off, flew like twenty feet, everything just exploded outward. We figured we were on to something good. And of course we would then play our show and Aerosmith would have to make an entrance.

We discovered several days before the show that Aerosmith had been put wise to our little scheme and had found some stock footage of airplanes blowing up tanks, and that’s what they were going to show when they came on after us. So here we are with a gutted Volkswagen sitting up on the dais and a Sherman tank under a tarp with gorillas standing around making sure nobody looks underneath.

We decided that because Aerosmith had a little trump card that we weren’t going to do the tank trick, so we never ran over the Volkswagen, we just ran down the stairs. We didn’t want to be one-upped on our one-upmanship, you know. I haven’t spoken with the boys in Aerosmith since then.

I just hope they do stuff like that now. The world needs to know Van Halen is ready to take over. Again. Hope they do SNL , The Morning shows, Nascar, Baseball Anthems, the works . Janie get to work. To hell with Lady Gaga’s fake borrowed shock rock.

  • Michael C.

@JasonBourne…agreed. There is no such thing as too much when it comes to VH. Except ticket prices. :)

How great would It be to see vh do the superbowl!? That would be such an epic/ amazing show!

  • Roth_Leaps_83

    @ Kayser —-

Nah, I was just pointing out the fact that Diamond Roth can tell a funny story in his book without being insulting and degrading to his fellow rock stars like Sammy does in his book.

Like I said a million times before —- Dave was born with class…..Sammy doesn’t know the meaning of the word.

  • Matt from Australia

    Nice story from DLR.

  • Panama Red

This is making me want to go to my storage unit and dig through my books and find Crazy From The Heat. I haven’t read it in years and forgot about this story. I don’t know why I put that book in storage in the first place.
Dave always had so many great ideas. He was always the showman. He really did help Van Halen become a legendary band. He is one of a kind and he was made for Rock and Roll. Man, I wish I could go back in time and experience Van Halen in the 70′s and early 80′s. It always sounds like it was such a huge party, all the time!

I’ve looked at those photos several times and it just occurred to me that Dave just so happened to position himself on that one specific area of the tank. I’m sure that was just a coincidence.
    ;)

There are some great comments here about the awesomeness of VH (ignoring the few downers). I’m enjoying reading the great comments about how bad ass VH was back in the day.

btw – The thought of seeing ZZ Top open for VH sounds awesome to me. I would love that!

  • pat

now lets see if roth_leaps can go without bashing hagar even though the story has nothing to do with him..lol

DAVID LEE ROTH is what that VAN HALEN so entertaining and interesting 100%

Who knows the full story about a similar show where the band parachuted into the stadium as an entrance? Also, where can you get a copy of DLR’s book?

I’ve always liked the story about vh opening for sabbath in the early days, and how they would blow them off the stage every night. Frustrated and jealous, Tony iommi told ozzy to go into vh’s dressing room and yell at them. So oz comes busting thru their door screaming, ranting, and yelling at them. The band looks at him and says: why are you yelling at us? Ozzy couldnt remember why. The authors exact words? Ozzy knew his time with black sabbath was over.

  • Carnal Knowledge

“unlike Sammy who needs a ghost writer who blindly regurgitates all his mudslinging, lies and revisionist history.”

    Obsessed much?

I guess ‘class’ is defined by wearing assless chaps.

I`ll be glad when the album comes out so i don`t have to see that stupid “the nation waits” comment on every page.

  • Melton

Leaps I swear I’m starting to think you’re an 18 year old girl who got bitch slapped by Hagar, and can’t stop wagging her tongue about it.

Dude, this is a fucking CVH story all the way from start to finish. When I get to check out something like this, the last thing I want to see or read about is some fucking drama about him. If I wanted, I could get that in any story about him or his group.

This VH fan can’t be alone thinking this way. So quit your crying queenie.

I wonder how many other bands have fans that know all of the little stories and small details that we all seem to know. VH fans are definitely a dedicated bunch, even if we can’t seem to agree a lot. I think we can all agree that the new album will be worth the wait. And the tour is gonna be historic! Can’t wait…rock on.

Exactly! It’s only rock n roll, and personally, I think its healthy to disagree here and there. It’s better then kissing ass…

    @ Melton —-

I’m just pointing out an obvious fact that seems to be lost on the Hagar Sheeples —- Dave has class and respects his fellow rock brethren…..and Sammy does not.

If you compare both Dave’s and Sammy’s books, it reveals a lot about their essence as human beings. Dave’s book is chock full of amusing anecdotes and opinions about his crazy large life, and Sammy’s book is full of bitterness, hate, insults, bragging, and lies. See what I mean here?

Ed, Alex, and Mike should be thankful for Dave and what he brought to VAN HALEN. Hell, Dave knew Ed and Al were bigger and better than they probably thought of themselves (IMO of course)
All Dave was doing was letting the world know these cats are the baddest dudes on the planet and I (Dave) will be the lead cheerleader, cause the brothers aren’t big talkers, they are musicians. Again, in my opinion Ed, Al, and Mike hung on Dave’s coat tails when it came to interviews, crazy antics, videos, and chicks, ect. Dave doesn’t need me sticking up for him, but I was there in the early day’s traveling around California catching has many show as my $$ would allow, and what I saw was 4 brothers having a blast, kick’in ass, and taking over the world. Noth’in better than Dave, Ed, Al, and Mike – The MIGHTY VAN HALEN!

  • Lupercal

Leaps, you haven’t read Sam’s book. So stop acting like you have. I highly doubt you became hypercritical overnight and gave SH himself $10 for his book.

Great story. Just finished “Crazy from the Heat”, it was a blast. Best bits were, obviously, VH & DLR parts. But I loved finding out about the club days and just how hard those guys worked to get to the top. The adventure tales were nice, but I could’ve read thousands more pages on what it was like to cut “Diver Down” from start to finish or how the DLR band went on throughout the late 80s. He should do a follow up – “Still Smilin’”, “A Little Ain’t Enough”, “(Still) Just a Gigolo”…there are a million titles he could come up with.

I always loved that sky-diving story…why the hell Sam never did that (VOA album cover!) I’ll never know, although I suppose climbing the rigging was close enough? haha.

  • Kayser Sozay

Leaps we get what you were trying to do. We all know your opinions about Dave and Sam. The question is how unrelated to Hagar does a news story have to be before you will decide not to even mention him?

  • http://Vhnd.com 52yr old fan

I’m confused Roth Leaps, you hate Sammy yet you keep bringing him up in every post. Why? There is only one DLR and I for one am glad. Sammy was just a guy Eddie asked to join his band and brought more people on the VH train. Let it go! And be honest, Did you really read Sammy’s book? Don’t lie.

  • Roth_Leaps_83

    @ Lupercal —-

You are correct — I havent read Sam’s book and I never will. Even if someone gave me a copy of it for free, I would just “throw it on the ground” (see the latest Lonely Island video to fully understand what I mean by that!).

However, I’ve read enough random snippets of it on the interwebs and on the VHND to know that I would be totally repulsed by it. Sammy is a very bitter phoney, and I have no interest in hearing him insult people that made him rich and were obviously a lot more talented than he ever was. Sammy is an insecure person, and an $80 million fortune from tequila is never going to hide that fact. He’ll be jealous of Eddie and Dave until the day he croaks.

I’ll always be reading Dave’s book until the day I die because Dave is someone you can feel good about admiring. He worked damn hard for everything he got in life, and he always shows how much he appreciates it. He’s criticized Eddie in the past, but he always does it tastefully and more than makes up for it by telling the world how much he respects Eddie’s talent. I dont see a lot of bitterness and hate in Dave’s life or his view of the world, and that comes from his character.

  • Sparks in ’11

@Jeff Adams- I am so jealous of your early VH days experience. I’m glad you continually shine the light on how it really went down. I couldn’t agree more that Ed, Mike & Al must have been thrilled that none of them had to be the spokesperson of the bunch.

People who are aware of Dave’s initial entry into the fold seem to only hear that “with Dave in the group, we won’t have to pay to rent his PA” story. I love how Al, more seriously says in the Van Halen: The Early Years documentary, “Dave had a certain confidence that I thought was a good thing.” Boy oh boy, did that little understatement ever slip throught the cracks lo these many years. Al, who is no dummy, was onto something much more than saving dough on speaker rental back in the day.

With regards to the assless chaps, as Dave put it, “Van Halen has something for everyone.” Can you really mock a guy who had the appeal, bravado and ability to put female fans asses in the seats of their shows? I get the whole picture, especially now that I’m getting older. Back when I was 12, sure I was wondering why this guys ass was in my face. He was and still is one clever and creative son of a bitch. Thank God he’s back in the fold.

    Lupercal says:
“Great story. Just finished “Crazy from the Heat”, it was a blast.”

It is a great book – one of the best rock (auto)biographies I’ve come across. Dave provides a fascinating and respectful insight into the early years of Van Halen, as well as the era from which they came. On another level, it’s just an entertaining read about an American music icon with a strong sense of adventure. Dave also shined some much needed light on the whole failed reunion fiasco and the behaviour of the key players involved.

For those who haven’t read it, I believe it’s out of print but anyone wanting a copy should email the guys at the VHND – I’m sure they can point you in the right direction.

KIX will be an excellent opener!

just hope wolfie isnt allowed to pick the opener!!!!

saw VH in ’07 in phila and it was stephen? i think, marley who opened dave went into this speal about how bob had shown them some love in the late 70s. my old guitar teacher saw VH in the late 80s and said alice in chains opened for van hagar and was boooooed off stage===============he said they were awesome but it was just a VH ONLY crowd.

btw Souls at Zero (who used to be Wrathchild America) were badazz. i think the old drummer is now apart of Godsmack (who suck)
    =============================================
rilly pumped about the new VH

  • Panama Red

@ Snoop Doug — As far as I know Dave’s book is out of print. I looked it up a while back when someone was asking the same question and I saw that people were selling it over the internet but they were price gouging because of it’s unavailability. You might want to look for it at used books stores, I don’t know if you’d have any luck but it’s worth a shot.
Ya know, this wouldn’t be a bad time for the publisher to start reprinting it again. They could make it coincide around the time of the release of the new VH album. Publishers/executives/business men types who love $$ usually think of doing things like that. It wouldn’t be such a bad idea. I think it was a New York times best seller, so I think it’s kind of weird that it went out of print. Maybe they’ll reissue it. I wish Dave would write another book. I wish Eddie would write a book too!

  • jeff adams

Sparks, you are absolutley correct that Alex knew Dave was good for the band and stated it in “VH THE EARLY YEARS” and if anyone thinks they hired him to save $10 on a rented PA is foolish. I’m not saying I know this as fact, it just doesn’t make sense. Dave made the music look like it sounds. As for Daves assless chaps, that is funnier than shit. Whoever doesn’t get it is missing out on humor. I scored a front row seat for the Diver Down show @ the Los Angeles Forum and when Dave came out in those chaps my buddy and I couldn’t stop laughing. That’s Diamond Dave and I get it.

One of my favorite Dave stories from CFTH took place in the pre-stardom days when the boys snooped around courtyards of apartment complexes in the middle of the night in Pasadena stealing light bulbs of specific colors for their shows.

    jeff adams says:
“As for Daves assless chaps, that is funnier than shit. Whoever doesn’t get it is missing out on humor.”

Some people don’t get the essence of rock n’ roll – period. Van Halen, with Dave’s view of life expressed through his lyrics, unique vocals, outrageous antics on and off-stage, and yes, even his assless chaps, were all a celebration of the hedonism of rock at that time.

  • freddiegirl

  • 3hater

Wow, gone for a day (Hershey Park kicked my ass) and it nice to know the Dave/Sammy war is still ragin’ on. Let me see if I can pour a little fuel on the fire with this question. What sub-name should we use to identify the latest VH line up? OK so far we have…

    1. VH = Van Halen, as a whole and includes all line-ups

    2. CVH = Classic/Original Van Halen – DLR, EHV, AVH, MA

    3. Van Hagar/Sam Halen = Sam era (was almost officially named ‘The Real Van Halen’ or ‘The New Van Halen’ at the time I seem to remember, that would have been horrible)

    4. VH3 = Gary era

So we could specify the current line up as “VH4″ I guess? Maybe “Van Wofie”? – nah that makes no sense (but does sound cool). Any other ideas from either side of the battle line?

The pre-stardom anecdotes are my favorite read from CFTH. Mike operated the light switch with his foot :-) Another good story involved purchasing cans of gun powder. The gun store owner would sell only one can to a long haired kid. So the boys each took turn to buy a can, and they’ll have four cans for each show. Classic. Really wish CFTH is in print again. Saw it on eBay once for $50!

I’ll always be reading Dave’s book until the day I die because Dave is someone you can feel good about admiring. I dont see a lot of bitterness and hate in Dave’s life or his view of the world, and that comes from his character.

I read this post with a hilarious visual(or sad depending on how you look at it). Remember back when the kooky looking, crying like a big baby Britney Spears fan had a video about how Britney’s haters were bringing him down and for Britney to keep her chin up? Well this post from roth leaps makes me think of that, with him delivering this speech crying like a baby defending his DLR til his dying days as he types on his keyboard, all the time reposting the same shit about Sammy’s book, a book which he himself has admitted he never has and never will read (at least that what he tells us “wink wink”) Are you that insecure about your boy Dave that you have to talk smack about Sam at any chance you get? Oh, wait, I forgot. It’s your mission in life to inform us Sammy sheeples about how he has tarnished the classic VH legacy. Howz bout you just shut your piehole and let us decide for ourself. Your act is getting really old, moron!

  • Jake

Roth_Leaps- Come on dude, you seem to be the one that acts so bitter and always wants to bash Hagar every chance you get to. I believe you’re Hunkola on youtube and those comments are absolutely disgusting.

  • Halen High

@ 1218 – The Van Halen related content of Sammy’s book has been quoted here in detail, and is also available to read on other sites. So no need for anyone to purchase and read the entire book to comment on certain aspects of it.

And then there was the book tour and the unfortunate headlines it generated.

I certainly don’t have a problem with Van Halen fans slamming Sammy – he’s done plenty of CVH/Dave bashing himself, going back to the early 90s in fact – so he’s asked for it.

  • Halen High

    littledreamer says:
“The pre-stardom anecdotes are my favorite read from CFTH. Mike operated the light switch with his foot.”

Yeah I agree! Those stories from ’74, ’75 alone are enough for any Van Halen fan to buy the book.

Paul Gargano of Metal Edge said of CFTH: “It’s Americana as told by an urban legend; and in true Diamond Dave fashion, no stone is left unturned, no corners are left uncut, and every page is more anticipated than the last.”
