Michael Anthony Clarifies Roth Comments

The Van Halen News Desk got an update straight from Michael Anthony today, when he personally called us and told us that he reads the VHND every day and he is hoping that we could clarify something he said in an interview that we featured this week. He also gave us the inside scoop on some details for Chickenfoot’s upcoming album and first single, here.

Michael Anthony, regarding his comments on David Lee Roth:

“I want to say something about the interview UltimateClassicRock.com. The guy that interviewed me interpreted a couple of things that I said about Dave’s solo touring the wrong way, and after I read some of the comments on VHND, I wanted to clarify what I meant.

“In that interview, I was talking about how, a few years ago, Roth put a band together and went out on a couple tours and was played nothing but Van Halen classics. I didn’t mean to knock him for doing so. What I meant to say about that was – that’s fine for him, but for me, I would not want to do that.

“A few years ago I put together my “Mad Anthony Express” band just to do a few shows. We were doing a few Van Halen songs, but we were mainly doing a bunch of classic rock songs that I dig. I could have taken it out on a small tour, but I didn’t want to. Or I could have went out and toured and played only Van Halen songs just to make money, but I don’t want to do that either. It’s the same reason why, on Chickenfoot’s first tour, we didn’t play any Van Halen or Hagar or Red Hot Chili Peppers… we didn’t want to only rely on our past.

“But anyway, I have no ill will at all towards Dave. He was the one guy that I was really looking forward to jamming with some day, either at the Van Halen reunion tour or when Van Halen would get inducted to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. You know, before the induction, his manager called me and asked if I would want to jam with Dave at the induction, and I said I’d love to! But neither would come to be. I’m totally cool with Dave.”

  • VH2008

Very cool to see this. Thanks for clarifying, Mike & VHND.

  • jasonbourne

Thanks Mike for at least showing up to the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame induction with Sammy. Trust us, it was most embarrassing to be a VH fan there and not have Ed, Al, or Dave show up. What a shame pn them and it once again shows how cool you are.

  • DK

Okay, so Mike didn’t mean anything bad regarding Dave. Cool to see he has no ill will towards him. Can you imagine if Mike & Dave played together at the RRHOF?? And with Ed, and Al, too? Ugh!

  • Halen High

Thanks Mike – would love to see you and Dave on the same stage again. All the best!

  • RC5150

Wow Michael Anthony is totally a stand up dude, i hope before i leave for the coast guard i get to see him jam with Chickenfoot.

  • Erick

I believe that we will have a Classic VAN HALEN Reunion in 5 years or so. Just 2 days at the Forum or Anaheim Stadium, that’s all. Dave, Eddie, Alex and Mike playing the classic songs.

  • pat

i never really thought what he said was that bad,i dont know why roth fans are so touchy..lol

  • Tom

What was and never happened doesnt matter.Van Halen and Chickenfoot have new music and both are going to play live soon….leave gossip for celebs like the Kardashion bimbos and the like

  • pat

BTW it is kind of cool that at least one of those guys read these comments…i would advise sammy not too…lol

  • Valen

Mike still has class, I don’t think Mike would be the kind to trash talk.

  • J5150C

Although I don’t usually believe everything I read (the comments regarding Dave playing VH tunes), I take my hat off to you Michael Anthony for clearing things up here at VHND. I don’t suppose you would care to clear up or comment on the real reason why you are not in Van Halen now, it’s just that there are three different versions: Sammy’s take, Ed’s take, and yours (well that’s what we read and heard). Anyway, if you happen to read this, I wish you the best with Chicken Foot and all things to come. Any chance you’ll bring the Foot down to Colombia, South America? That would be bad ass!! In the past decade we’ve had Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Scorpions, Ronnie James Dio, Bon Jovi, Metallica, etc. The list goes on. Even though I’ve seen Van Halen with Dave and with sammy when I used to live in LA, it would be great if Chicken Foot and Van Halen would come down here in 2011 and/or 2012! Take care Mike!!

    OUT!!

  • Rob

Mike is one cool cat. I’m hoping that one day in the not so distant future that the classic line up will tour. It would probably be one of the biggest tours ever.

  • http://www.youtube.com/cpirazzo Vuelto Loco!

God bless Michael Anthony, you Rock!

  • john

Someday Ed and Al need to apologize to Mike for not showing him the respect he deserved over the past 30 years. I understand Ed wants to play with his son, which is fine. It bothers me more that Mike is out of VH – more than any of the singers. I feel that Ed, Al and Mike were the core..with Dave they were mighty and they were great with Sam, too..Ed should apologize to all those he’s hurt – the AA way, and Mike is one of them, regardless of him being in the band or not. At least Mike was in the band during their hey day when they really mattered. This current incarnation will ultimately be a footnote in the history of Van Halen, ultimately because time has passed them by. 50 years from now VH will be remembered as Ed, Dave, MIKE and Al. No offense to any other ex members including Wolfgang, who seems to be an outstanding, talented kid..

  • Jeremy

Everything I have ever heard about Michael Anthony, including people who have met him, is that he is a very nice guy. Have to root for a guy like that.

  • Halen High

    pat says:
“i never really thought what he said was that bad,i dont know why roth fans are so touchy..lol”

To answer your question: “The guy that interviewed me interpreted a couple of things that I said about Dave’s solo touring the wrong way.”

Mike would not have clarified his comments, if he felt it wasn’t necessary.

  • Halen High

    pat says:
“BTW it is kind of cool that at least one of those guys read these comments…”

Well we agree on that. I think it’s cool that one of the original legends of Van Halen, one of my heroes, visits the same website that I do! Now I feel bad for slamming him LOL!

  • Roth_Leaps_83

Hmmm — it appears Mikey has crossed back over into the “CLASSY” category !!

In all seriousness, it was damn cool to see Mike clarify his statements and “un-diss” Dave. I kinda doubted Mike ever had bad feelings about Dave like bitter Sammy does. Mike was there from the very beginning so he knows how important Dave was to the successful rise of the Mighty Halen, and he knows Dave has every GOD DAMN RIGHT to sing a set of VH tunes as a solo artist any damn chance he gets.

I also would have LOVED to see Mike and Eddie and Alex and Dave jamming onstage at the Rock Hall of Fame induction. That whole fiasco still bums me out because it could have been a very memorable night for Van Halen fans. Unfortunately, it was an embarrassment to their legacy that 3 members didnt have the common decency to show up!

  • Halen High

    Erick says:
“I believe that we will have a Classic VAN HALEN Reunion in 5 years or so.”

I would love to see CVH do a final tour, in which they play each of their classic albums from start to finish. Maybe two albums per show? They could even throw in some of the unreleased demos as a treat! They must give us some kind of spectacular send-off. Five years from now is too long though. Considering their age, I would like to see them do it as a one-off over a few weeks, after Van Halen’s current tour is over.

  • Robert

I’ve met Mike a few times backstage and at VH soundchecks when I worked for The Inside magazine. I also talked with him at a car show, where both his car and my car were on display. He’s a total stand-up guy. His wife, Sue, is equally as nice. Mike is the type of guy who is grateful about what he has. A lot of people in his position begin to take the wealth and the fame for granted. He’s not one of those types. He’s always been down to earth.

  • Andy

What a great guy Michael Anthony is, Im so much looking forward to seeing Van Halen here in Australia but will miss him being on stage, no disrespect to Wolfgang, who is also great. Thanks for all the updates Mike and good luck.

  • BrianG

What would be really something, is that if Chickenfoot DOES add some Sammy-era Van Halen to their set list this time in addition to their own stuff. Even if only a couple of songs. “Right Now” “Dreams” maybe something more obscure like “Get Up.” We could potentially have them both out touring, both with new albums, and both playing “Van Halen” tunes. lol Van Halen smorgasbord.

  • Dave

That’s a cool idea “Halen High” suggested, How about this… Do an album per night, 1st night VAN HALEN & the rest of the night “Club Days Covers” + unreleased, 2nd VHII, 3rd W&CF etc. Cheap Trick did that, 1st, 2nd, 3rd Album @ select clubs, I went all three nights, AWESOME!!

  • Sinatra Van Halen

MA: “In that interview, I was talking about how, a few years ago, Roth put a band together and went out on a couple tours and was played nothing but Van Halen classics. I didn’t mean to knock him for doing so. What I meant to say about that was – that’s fine for him, but for me, I would not want to do that.”

Not that MA could pull it off, if economic temptation / necessity arose. Backing vocals, then and now. And great ones, too. But it’s apples and oranges. Roth wrote the lyrics he’s singing, then and now, so it’s more artistically legit. And he’s got a right to pay the rent. All in all, media people figure a cat fight is the better story, and that’s lame. Should be the best of both worlds this summer / autumn — Hagar fans get CF and VH fans get CVH. What’s the hassle?

  • wooten

Never thought he said anything out of the way, myself. Still cool he explained himself for people that make something out of nothing.

  • BrownSound101

That was cool as hell for him to clarify what he meant.

Man, that last part Mikey wrote almost brought a tear to my eye, “He was the one guy that I was really looking forward to jamming with some day…I’m totally cool with Dave.”

Damnit, I wish to God the ORIGINAL lineup of VH (Al,Ed,Dave & Mike) would do a Farewell/Reunion Tour for the fans!!! I was too young & never got to see the first incarnation of VH live.

  • bg bob

Pretty sure this moves him permanently back into the classy category.

  • Halen High

    wooten says:
“Still cool he explained himself for people that make something out of nothing.”

Again, if Mike felt his reported comments were “nothing”, he would not have bothered to clarify them…

  • Dave

Mike has always been a class act and continues to prove it to this day. He didn’t have to clarify anything yet he chose to. I remember my brothers telling me stories of going to the hotels where the band was playing and no one had a chance to meet Dave, Al, or Ed. But Mike on the other hand was out there hangin out with everyone. Mike, you are sorely missed in the band and hopefully one day soon Ed will wise up and realize how much he needs you just like we already know!

  • Diamond Dean

    Absolute respect to Mr.ANTHONY !!!

We shd thank him for making our lives a better place , and we all know well miss him in the mighty VH!!!!!

I do agree that ROTH shd have played far more solo stuff on his latter solo tours , gees JUST LIKE PARADISE , GOIN CRAZY , SHYBOY YANKEE ROSE , r just as good as any VAN HALEN track( yes! thats what i said), gees id rather hear that then LITTLE DREAMER WOMAN IN LOVE etc .hIS EARLIER TOURS WERE MAYBE THE GRERATEST SETLISTS OF ALLTIME

Whatever path you choose , all we hope is that yr happy .

At the record signing in SYDNEY in 98 , Mikey said “HEY DEAN” as we walked up to get our records signed , that was a special time n something i will never forget , it may only be a small sentence but it meant a lot to me.

    God bless him,
thanks for making our lives a much better place ,

    DD

  • Rhymes

    Two words: Class Act

Mike truly is the nicest person in Van Halen

Maybe Mike would be in VH now, if the Alex, Dave and Eddie came to Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. If I remember right, weren’t Ed in rehab by the time and couldn’t show up. And Al didn’t wanna show up if Eddie was there and Dave didn’t wanna go either.

For the real reuion tour, later sometime, Get Mike, Sammy, Gary back. Gary, Dave, Sammy would perform their own songs. Wolfie would play keys and rythm guitar when it’s needed. It should be a world tour so every one get the chance to see them. IMO :)

  • Diamond Dean

    ANTHONY,VAN HALEN,VAN HALEN,ROTH a little prayer , maybe one day

Even just a once off , n our lives maybe complete

  • chrisom

Mike and Wolfie are probably the only 2 really “nice guys” in the Van Halen line-up, (besides Gary Cherone)…

  • Sparks in ’11

That was way cool. What I STILL remain obnoxiously hung up on, more than whether it was a barb at Dave or not is this…

“In between Van Halen and Chickenfoot, did you consider recording your own music?”

Mike, would you consider RECORDING YOUR OWN MUSIC someday? I take the actual question to mean are there any songs or ideas that YOU have written or come up with that you would like to put down on tape. Not, would you consider putting together a band that would play VH covers. In any case, please write a book some day. Thanks for popping in.

  • SCAR

Shit, Mad Mike you don’t have to explain yourself, fuck the drama queens on here!!! You keep doing what you do best, kickin ass with Sammy, Joe and Chad!!!

  • jim

Mike wanted to live a day as a “non-class act” to experience what it was like.

  • Don

All you that bashed Michael the first time, HA! Now what?

  • 3hater

Ever see the 2004 video where Sammy & Mike run on to stage at a VH concert and “attack” Wofgang? That’s a riot and shows how cool they are. Mike is the man!

  • Mike De Lara

Thanks Mikey! You`ll always be “The Original”… We`ll miss you in The Mighty Van Halen, but look forward to your kick ass bass in ChickenFoot! LONG live Van Halen and God Bless!

  • Erick

Imagine: July 4, 2016 – Anaheim Stadium (or anywhere..)
A plane flies over and 4 guys with parachutes jump out. Ed, Al, Dave and Mike get onstage and start with “On Fire”.

We get 25 CVH songs, a few nights in a row and then it is really over.

The remaining 60 years of my life would be all perfect..

  • delvech

Even if they never played with each other again,I still can’t understand why two people who were “brothers” for so many years cannot pick up a phone and air out their problems… Sounds easy to me.

  • Michael B

You’re awesome Mike! Wish you all the best with Chickenfoot and hope someday the mighty VH will have an original lineup, at least one more time. Just keep playing, something I wish Ed and company would have done over the last 10 years.

  • Darth Hater

It’s impossible not to like Michael Anthony. The guy is as genuine as they come. Love it.

  • =VH=OZ MAN

Lets just cut to the chase & clear up the BS!! Mike got himself kicked out of Van Halen because he sided & chose to play with Sam, plain & simple. The VH bro’s have every right to be disappointed with Mike’s decision to jam with Sam because in their eyes its a sign of betrayal. Its like going out with your best mate’s ex-wife!!!

I think Mike should have shown a bit of understanding or at least compassion for EVH’s life back then in the early 2000′s. I mean it was as plain as the sky that EVH was having major health problems (cancer & alcohol), his marriage was breaking up, he & Al lost their mother & on the business side of things Warner Brothers dropping Van Halen from their label. I think Eddie & Alex weren’t against Mike jamming, in fact I think the VH bro’s would give him their blessings if he jammed with anybody else!! But jamming with Sam & bill it as ‘The Other Half’ is just dumb & asking for trouble. The VH bro’s viewed that as a betrayal & a blight on the Van Halen name. I remember EVH’s saying on an interview back then on hearing the ‘Other Half’ tour to which he plainly said “Alex IS the other half of Van Halen”. Mike should have read into that & at least made some calls back to 5150 to clear it up, but it didn’t. But thats history now, whats done is done. But for the EVH haters out there that constantly bash EVH on every little thing he does is just stupid.

Interesting?! Sam released his tell all BS book…yet no comment or response from VH. Mike has just insulted David Lee Roth’s legacy in VH….yet no comment or response by Dave or VH. Mike has just made an apology for disrespecting Dave…yet no comment or response from Dave or VH. I suggest Van Halen have moved on, I suggest Mike should move on too but its hard being an ex-member of the greatest band in rock n roll!! I’m just stoked that I’ll be hearing new Van Halen music again. When there’s new Van Halen music the rest is irrelevant!! Long live the mighty VAN HALEN!!!!!

  • AL

Mike is a great guy and very under rated player, you have to admit not too many bass players have backed up 2 of the best in the business. Most guys would have huge egos but not Mike.Classy all the way!Looking forward to the new album Mike!!

  • FRED O

GREAT INFO !! DAVE WAS THE ONE WHO RECOGNIZED ANTHONY’S VOCAL ABILITY’S TO CREATE THE GREAT HARMONYS THEY HAD, AS DAVE SAID SOMETHING SIMILAR TO THE BEACH BOYS, CONCEPT WISE. THATS WHY DAVE I AM SURE WANTED ANTHONY BACK ON BOARD….

  • FAMAC

What exactly did Mike clarify???? It seems to me was all he did was restate what he said in that interview.

What Mike should have said was “I didn’t want to tour Van Halen songs because I didn’t sing any of them. It would be like Ringo touring a Beatles show singing Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane.”

Dave has every right in the world to tour songs he wrote.

How can so many of you think that was classy? Are you fawning over him because you think he reads your posts, or based on what he actually clarified – which was a reiteration, not a “clarification.”

  • http://www.vhnd.com Pat G.

Mike is an awesome dude, no doubt about it. To see the foru originals at the RRHoF would have been magic, but Ed had his “issues” to deal with and Al and Dave weren’t going to go with out him, which is understandable. IF they can put aside their differences and get the classic line up together one more time, I think it would outsell the last tour. Good that he clarified his comments regarding Dave and his solo tour. Dave’s got every right to play whatever he wants to play duirng his solo tours, whether its VH, solo stuff or whatever the hell he wants to play.

  • mjc

Mike you said nothing wrong. There are a few ooooooooover sensitive Dave fans at this site, just ignore them.Hell,Dave does’nt give a shit about the fans anyway.

  • temple5150

I THINK THE GUYS (and you know who you are) WHO MADE MIKEY EVEN “THINK” HE HAD TO CLARIFY HIS STATEMENT ARE A BUNCH OF DICKS (“1st Amendment”). Let the adults continue the conversations here, please…either that or learn to read.

Mike, you’re the man. Do what you want, when you want (like I have to tell you that, right?)
