Van Halen Makes Gibson.com’s Top 50 Cover Songs of All Time

From Gibson.com:

Some of the most famous songs in music history are cover versions – whether it’s The Beatles doing Motown hits, Elvis tackling R&B tunes or just about everyone covering Bob Dylan songs. In honor of the artists who didn’t write the songs, but recorded legendary versions of them, Gibson.com is counting down the Top 50 Cover Songs of All Time.

Gibson.com recently enlisted its editors, writers and you, the readers, to vote for the greatest cover songs ever released. After announcing #50-41, #40-31, #30-21 and #20-11, we’re ready to reveal the Top 10 Cover Songs of All Time – with the original artist, or, in some cases, the most famous previous artist in parentheses.

33. “Oh, Pretty Woman,” Van Halen (Roy Orbison)

The Big O’s 1964 original made #1 on both sides of the Atlantic. Nearly 20 years later, Van Halen decided it was ripe for a party-metal makeover. Hey, why not? They had already mashed The Kinks, to devastating effect. Van Halen’s version walks a fine Spinal Tap line of clever/stupid, but it somehow works. EVH’s riffing sounds super-steely and David Lee Roth adds a comedic “grrrrrrrrr.” A hit was guaranteed. The fact remains, more wannabe bands rock Van Halen’s version than Orbison’s original. Mercy! – Michael Leonard

9. “You Really Got Me,” Van Halen (The Kinks)

Van Halen’s cover of this Kinks classic was the first thing that most of the rock world ever heard of VH. The year was 1978 and the song’s pairing with “Eruption” on the band’s self-titled album of that year was one of the most devastating one-two punches ever delivered by four dudes from Pasadena. Opening with Eddie’s legendary “brown sound” (augmented by washes of reverb on the opposite side of the stereo spectrum), the guitar was right in your face, the energy was cranked up to burning point, and David Lee Roth’s sassy delivery made fans momentarily forget all about The Kinks’ version, much to Dave Davies’ later chagrin. The guitar solo has it all: syrupy phaser tones, two-handed tapping, wide bends and a cool toggle-switch stutter effect, all topped off with a killer pick slide. The breakdown after the solo would set the stage for future classics like “Mean Streets” and “Panama,” and the closing legato and hint of feedback made you hold your breath just in case there was more coming. – Peter Hodgson

Here’s their Top Ten covers:

10. “Respect,” Aretha Franklin (Otis Redding)
9. “You Really Got Me,” Van Halen (The Kinks)
8. “The House of the Rising Sun,” The Animals (Traditional)
7. “Mr. Tambourine Man,” The Byrds (Bob Dylan)
6. “Hallelujah,” Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen)
5. “Crossroads,” Cream (Robert Johnson)
4. “I Fought the Law,” The Clash (The Crickets, Bobby Fuller Four)
3. “Hurt,” Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails)
2. “Twist and Shout,” The Beatles (The Top Notes, The Isley Brothers)
1. “All Along the Watchtower,” The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Bob Dylan)

  • Darth Hater

“I Fought the Law” better than YRGM???
    Uh, no.

  • http://tim-karplus.blogspot.com t1m

You know, usually whenever a website posts lists of this sort, I have all kinds of problems with them, but this one is actually pretty legitimate. Nicely put together, always good to see Van Halen getting some credit.

  • Michael C.

Interesting list. I’m surprised Hurt was ranked asked as high as it was. I would have added SRV’s version of Little Wing. I know his version is an instrumental, but it’s just fantastic. Nice list, though.

  • freddiegirl

Nice to see a VH cover in the top ten but “You Really Got Me” deserves to be number one or at least in the top five in my totally biased opinion! :D It’s one of the greatest covers ever. I still love it. I remember as a teenager hearing the Kinks’ original and thinking to myself..”Who is doing this lame-*** version of “You Really Got Me”? Heh!

I love the video for YRGM too; it might be my fav ‘official’ VH video. Young EVH shredding away and Dave bumping and grinding like the male tart he is! I lubs my Ed and my CVH!

  • http://gimikk.com James

I think The Gourds version of “Gin n Juice” should be #1. RHCP’s version of “Higher Ground” should be up there as well.

  • Eddie Van Wailin’

I agree, this is actually a pretty well thought out list. Not too sure #3 and 4 should be so high up, but otherwise no complaints.

Surprised to not see U2′s Everlasting Love cover isn’t on the list. Always though thout it was one of their more underrated songs. The 60′s/Oldies vibe they maintained in it was such a nice change from the horribeld disco vibe of previous iterations of that song with Edge’s Doo Wop-esque backing vocals and guitar phrasings.

  • Roth_Leaps_83

    @ Freddiegirl —-

I have to agree with you about YRGM being #1 on this list. That song is ELECTRIFYING — makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck even 35 years later! I think Eddie once said in an interview “We took that song and turned it into a rocket ship” — LOL I always loved that line. :-)

Then you listen to the Kinks’ version and feel very let down by how boring it is.

I think any song gets a LOT better when it becomes Van Halenized by Eddie and Dave……no debate needed.

  • 5152

The Problem with “cultural cool” is it is more about dramatic personae (Jeff Buckley, The Clash, Johnny Cash) than innovative music. Van Halen would top it if Gibson made a “musically innovative” song list — along with Hendrix, Beatles, and Aretha.

  • TearItUp

Totally agree with James, RHCP’s version of “Higer Ground” should DEFINITELY be in there. Not a bad list overall though.

A cover by the Clash ahead of VH though…NOT!!

  • CoMoVHFan

“Where Have All The Good Times Gone?” isn’t my favorite VH cover, but I have to give it an honorable mention for Ed’s sinister tone and the intro.

  • anythingleftinthatbottle

Well, there is certainly enough covers to choose from when it comes to VH! And I don’t have a problem with any of them. I even thought their Who cover was good with Sam.

  • jeff adams

I was never a big fan of the Kinks yet they wrote some good tunes that VH took full advantage of. “You Really Got Me” and “Where Have All The Good Times Gone” (I think Where Have All The Good Times Gone was a Kinks tune, I could be wrong) were Van Halenized. I for one dig cover tunes. It put a different twist on a great tune. VH’s version of “Your No Good” (Linda R.) is sooooo f’n bad ass along w/ the live version (video) of that song. VH showing respect to good tunes and good artists. Noth’in wrong w/ that, and I hope they do one or two on the new album.

  • Halen Goer

    HURT!?!? WTF?!?!

  • littledreamer

@Eddie Van Wailin’ – Agree re U2′s Everlasting Love.

VH’s cover of Heartbreak Hotel was pretty awesome. They sang it live in South America. Check it out on YT.

  • dan slaughter

yea..what about “YOU’RE NO GOOD!!”,”A APOLITICAL BLUES”,”WON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN”,”ROCK N’ ROLL”,”ROCKIN’ IN THE FREE WORLD”,and most of all FUCKING “ICE CREAM MAN”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That tune smokes!!! Tragic that it always gets forgot!!! Thank God “Dancing In The Streets” was NOT included! Hands down the worst song of VH career!!!!!!!!!!!

  • PCH

    @ dan slaughter

Very good point about Ice Cream Man! Most people don’t realize it was written by John Brim. Van Halen made that song thier own!

  • paul wilkinson

yep.ice cream man does it for me.also cannot understand why its hardly ever mentioned, even with one of eddies best solos!!!

  • David A Toluca Lake

    Aerosmith “Train Kept a Rollin’”
    Cheap Trick “Ain’t That Shame”

  • Halen High

Even when trying to be really objective about this – I still would have thought YRGM would be number one.

  • pauleeroth

The first i ever hear of these blasted countdowns is when they’re published. That does it, i’m gonna go for a job as a magazine editor or writer. My first order of business will be to ensure Van Halen receive the respect they have earned and thoroughly deserve. Sorry if i’m sounding like a presidential candidate but someone must step up to make things right! And btw, this is the “VHND” dig it? I log on to read about “VAN HALEN” Please people, enough with the references to u2 and rhcp(etc). There’s so little news on Van Halen as it is. Roth on!

  • anythingleftinthatbottle

I know most of you hate ‘Dancin in the Streets’, and I admit it’s not on my top 100 as far as VH goes. But what I always loved about it was what Eddie did to it. That driving delay sound in that song that always sounds like it’s on the verge of feeding back is REALLY cool. I wish he’d put that in a VH original for the new album. ANd the solo was super; very fluid. I listened to it today. Good over all list though.

  • SCAR

List’s are lame!!!! Rock on VH and the Foot!!!!

  • Valen

You Really Got Me should’ve been on the Top 3. They should also have their cover of The Kinks “Where Have All The Good Times Gone” on the list as well.

  • “Lemon Scented Pledge” (bbl70)

OH YEAH!!! Gotta love a VH cover. I know I have posted about this before but I am still hopelessly addicted to this “Covers Band from Pasadena” bootleg of the band in fabulous form. I think this show was at Bogarts in ’76 or ’77 but I am not exactly sure. Check out this set:

30 Days in the Hole (Humble Pie)
    Firehouse (Kiss)*
Keep Playing that Rock & Roll (Johnny Winter)***
    Last Child (Aerosmith)
Live for the Music (Bad Co)***
    The Rover (Led Zep)*
Still Alive & Well (Johnny Winter)***
    Superstitious (Stevie Wonder)*
Sweet Emotion (Aerosmith)***** (Rediculous Guitar Solo)
    Twist & Shout (Isley Bros)
Waiting for the Bus (ZZ Top)*
    Walk this Way (Aerosmith)**

This is simply an amazing performance by VH here. Every tune is Van Halenized beyond belief with sick blazing guitar leads, killer bass grooves, hard hitting drums, frenzied banshee howls and forgotten lyrics galore. PURE VH!!! Sparks: you know what I’m talking about bro… You probably have this in your collection of boots. The sound quality is pretty good. I crank it up in the car and lower the bass a little and think it sounds great.

For anyone who is interested, I would highly recommend going over to youtube and checking some of these out. I have put stars next to the ones I like best. I don’t think they are all up there but you can probably find the majority of these online. I love this set so much that I want everyone to hear it.

This show epitomizes CVH as the ULTIMATE party band!!!

I also love the CVH covers of Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo, Summertime Blues, Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers, Heartbreak Hotel-(as previously mentioned), Rock Steady & Don’t Call Us. And wasn’t “Young & Wild”also a cover song of an unknown band?

Freddiegirl: I am with you. Lovin my CVH. Lately I haven’t been able to listen to anything else. Rock on!!!

  • MICAL VEE

Where have all the good times gone blows away half the songs on this list!!!!!! Always loved that song!!!!!

  • Halen High

    MICAL VEE says:
“Where have all the good times gone blows away half the songs on this list.”

I love cranking up Where have all the good times gone, and I prefer it to Pretty Woman.

  • MICAL VEE

YOU REALLY GOT ME by the KINKS was a damn good song! By 1960′s standards,it was ROCKIN’!!!!! Like Mr. Edward Van Halen said….We took a hot tune and turned it into a jet plane!!!! “. It’s like VAN HALEN took the KINKS tune and injected the VENOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about HEAVY METAL!!!!!!!!!

  • Carnal Knowledge

My favorite Van Halen cover is the ones they didn’t do on Fair Warning.

The greatest album of all time.

  • http://u holmes

    78 when they were great

  • skutch

Totally with SCAR on this one. I hate these kinds of lists. Long live Wolfie!

  • Diamond Dean

ummmmm californian girls????it was definately a bigger hit then YOU REALLY GOT ME, not saying its better . Dave did better covers then Sammy , appolitical blues is terrible

  • jasonbourne

EVERYBODY loves a VH cover. I’m hoping they do onbe one the new album . Something cool like from Elvis or one of the greats where Dave can strut his stuff :)

  • steve

“Oh,Pretty Woman” was never a number one either here or there. The single didn’t even crack the top ten in the US.

  • Lupercal

I always preferred “Dancing in the Streets” to “Pretty Woman” in terms for their Diver Down covers – but “You’re No Good” is one of their best tunes and possibly my favourite from the Roth era. Actually, VHII as an album is probably my favourite from the Roth era. When you think about how they open their albums:

    Running with the Devil
    You’re No Good
    And The Cradle Will Rock
    Mean Street
Where Have all the Good Times Gone!
    1984/Jump
    Good Enough
    Mine All Mine
    Poundcake
    Seventh Seal
    Neworld/Without You

They are all MASSIVE openers and really grab you by the balls as soon as the albums hits – you know you’re in for a good time. Of all of those, You’re No Good is the only cover…but man oh man what a song. Its got some crazy bass presence at the beginning, a beautiful solo by Eddie, and the great whistle screaming of Dave. Fantastic. The covers aren’t as good as their own material but gives you a huge appreciation for what they did to songs in the club days and how they managed to get people so interested in them! If I was in a band that did a lot of covers you think “well, where’s all our own material?” but VH made it so that their covers were essentially their own songs by making them so hard edged and individual. That is the magic of this band and that is how they probably got away with more covers than their contemporaries.

  • Lupercal

Haha no got that that wrong – “Where have all the good times gone!” is also a cover – and its great. I just think that their VHII opener is even better.

  • Halen High

    Diamond Dean says:
    “ummmmm californian girls????”

Australian radio LOVES Dave’s California Girls.

  • swingin sinner

@carnalknowledge please explain….you like all their covers? word! IMO their best cover was Ice cream man that song makes my jimmy stand up and spit!

  • swingin sinner

top whatever lists always make me poop, its all subjective! Van Halen is number one end of discussion, now lets get back to the story….. Van Halen touring in australia, hell yeah! Update the website its time to shit and get off the pot already Happy New year to you as well!…. Jump back …whats that sound? Typical Van Halen zero discipline!!

  • halen High

Lupercal – I agree with you for most of that list, but Mine All Mine? That song is so ‘Flashdance’! Sadly, it was a pretty good (bad) indicator of what was to come.

  • Halen High

    Lupercal says:
“Haha no got that that wrong – “Where have all the good times gone!” is also a cover – and its great.”

Sometimes it’s easy to forget this song is a cover. Musically and lyrically, it sounds to me like an original VH tune. No doubt it’s a great cover and a killer opening track.

  • Diamond Dean

There advertising the upcoming concerts as VAN HALEN with DAVID LEE ROTH, yes Roth is popular in australia , ROTH toured here he played to 14000 at the ent cent( the same place vh played) , Hagar toured played at a pub to about 1200 people

Hagar toured as former van halen singer SAMMY HAGAR, ive never heard a solo hagar song on the radio ever.

ya still hear JUMP, JUST A GIGALO , CALIFORNIAN GIRLS , PANAMA , YOU REALLY GOT ME , DREAMS N WCTBL . You wld never hear WHEN ITS LOVE Right now etc

Bar appolitical blues , did van hagar ever release a cover?? and that one was terrible , Dave has done some amazing covers

  • Carnal Knowledge

Diamond Dean: I’m calling serious bullshit on this “ive never heard a solo hagar song on the radio ever.”

Swingin Sinner: I was referring to the fact that Halen’s best album, and best rock album of all time, was the one they did with ZERO covers.

Halen High: You refer to Mine All Mine as being an indicator of what was to come….cynically speaking, of course. But, you trumpet 1984?? Popping in the cassette and hearing the song(?) 1984 was the most surreal moment of my Van Halen youth…….but it had nothing to do with what came next….ofcourse after ‘Jump’. Mine All Mine is not a flashdance song. Compared to original Van Halen, maybe. But, there you, and others, go again. Constantly comparing Van Hagar to Van Halen.

If you don’t like Van Hagar….then you don’t like Eddie. Is that acceptable to you people?

  • anythingleftinthatbottle

I think what is being said is that we don’t like Eddie with Hagar. I think it sucks that all of them involved killed the greatest rock band of all time and replaced it with a good rock band.

  • jeff adams

Woman and Childern First – Fairwarning – 1984, no covers. Which album are you refering to Carnal Knowledge? Those were all VH’s best albums along w/ VH1 – VH2, and Diver Down, w/ amazing covers. Speaking of covers, Dave covering Franky’s version of “That’s Life” on the Eat em and Smile album was f’n cool and “Tabacco Road”.

  • Let’s Rock

For my money “You’re No Good”

It has not been over played and is strongest of the bunch!!

Never need to hear “Oh, Pretty Woman” or “You Really Got” ever again.

Always thought the “Damn good” Van Halen stuff were the originals.

    The Nation Waits

  • Halen High

    Carnal Knowledge says:
“Diamond Dean: I’m calling serious bullshit on this “ive never heard a solo hagar song on the radio ever.”

CK – I live in Adelaide, Australia and for a while in Queensland. In over 30 years of listening to Aussie radio, I can’t recall ever hearing a Sammy solo song. Seriously – not once. Sammy’s public profile in Australia is strictly as the former replacement singer for Van Halen. When he played in Adelaide in about 1998, he played a hotel here out in the suburbs. I didn’t go but I was told by a mate who did go, (he loves Van Hagar) that there were only about 200-300 people there.

I remember when I first heard he had joined Van Halen – I had no idea who he was.

  • Halen High

    Carnal Knowledge says:
“If you don’t like Van Hagar….then you don’t like Eddie. Is that acceptable to you people?”

I like some of the music Eddie produced during the Sammy years, but not much of it. Surely we can be fans and still objectively judge Eddie’s work. Rather than try and convince ourselves that everything he ever did was good or brilliant.

  • Diamond Dean

    Thank you Halen high.

Yes i live in sydney, he played a local pub , where cover bands play usually, id say there wld be lucky to be 1200 maybe?

Carnal knowledge , yes never heard a solo sammy song , i dare say his solo albums never charted once here in oz.

After 5150 there probably hasnt been a song from any of there albums played on the radio , ” when its love , right now , etc have never been heard in the 20 yrs if they were played at all?

Luv 5150 but it went down hill quick ,ou812 is their worst . Teeerrrible album , n yes i blame Eddie as much as Hagar

  • Carnal Knowledge

Diamond: Congrats on being one of the few ‘RothWarriors’ on this site to admit that blame lies as much with Eddie as anybody.

Funny, but Eddie certainly doesn’t recieve the same demeaning comments as Sammy…..even though he’s as much to blame!

Per your comment about going downhill: Van Hagar’s best work (imo) was F.U.C.K., where they brought in old Trusty Ted Templeman to finish the album for Eddie…….

But, seriously. Australia doesn’t play that stupid I Can’t Drive 55 song? EVERYBODY plays that one….

God I wish Hagar never joined Halen. Just sayin…

  • freddiegirl

Carnal Knowledge…You’re right; Ed is as much to blame but I can admit with all honesty that I give him a pass much more than either Sam or Dave for that matter just because I like him more. There it is. His guitar work with Sam was awesome but the attitude was gone for me; not the same band. No, VH wasn’t just Dave but he was fabulous icing on an already well-made cake.
