David Lee Roth: “Van Halen Transcends Music”

The following David Lee Roth quotes were taken from a 1997 interview that Roth did with Frank Meyer from the now-defunct POPsmear magazine. Photographs by Robert Yager.

“This band has been at each others throats since before the beginning. Once upon a time, no even before that. And out of this conflict comes marvelous, competitive, flame throwing, hallelujah, dump truck size, Bubba’s hot barbecue, Watusi couple number two to the dance floor please. When classic Van Halen is together it’s like one person. When I say ‘I’ in this respect, I mean my whole cadre that I am part of. I’m the tear boss, and I’m a fuckin’ lifer.”

“When I was in classic Van Halen, I was in charge of propaganda. Beautiful thing, all the photos, the rumors, the stage shows, the T-shirts, and on and on.”

“I am a team player. Spiritually, critically, I am. I love the responsibility that is labeled onto me because of that, and I love to be able to depend on it, ya know. For me it’s not the Dave Roth show.”

“In America, we believe big time in publicizing the shit out of ‘we ain’t talkin’.’ First we make goddamn sure that everybody knows we ain’t saying anything.”

“There’s only one David Lee. I’m the fun in Van Halen, always will be. My belligerent enthusiasm is as optimistic as ever. I’m an optimist. When I go fishin’, I take a Nikon and a frying pan.”

“It is purely magical to be part of a dynasty. Van Halen, to many people, is equal to what Mick and Keith may be to some people. Page and Plant. Lennon and McCartney. There comes a point in your career if you make it past the requisite three to six years, which if you think about it, Beatles, six years and gone. Hendrix, six and a half, gone. And on and on. There comes a point, if you’re lucky, where you enter a pantheon of heroes where you’re known for what you’ve done, not what you’re doing now, or what you’re going to do in the future. If Beethoven were cryogenically brought back into the market place tomorrow, what would we all want to hear, ‘da-da-da-da’ (Beethoven’s 5th)! When the Three Tenors get together and they surf every wild vocal wave operatically throughout history that you could imagine and then some, what’s the encore? ‘O Solo Mio!’ Ha Ha! When you go to the Stones, what do you want to hear? Play me ‘Brown Sugar’ and I’ll go get a T-shirt. That’s Van Halen. And that is part and parcel of when what you do as an entity transcends just music.”

  • Kayser Sozay

You can’t deny Dave’s got a masterful way with words. What he said is cool and all but it was also 97. How about some discussion about what VH is currently like?

  • freddiegirl

He’s right… ;) Wonderful pictures to see before heading off to dreamtime. That Frankie Ed’s playing in the last shot is bad@$$.

  • Rockn

Excellent article……I like the optimist line…lol nikon and a frying pan….new VH music this yr?…..Its coming people…Its coming…1am here in so cal…time for a lil fair warning b4 bed…peace

  • Tommy Boy

Truly transcends music….how true. Peace folks.

  • Sparks on the Horizon!!

“In America, we believe big time in publicizing the shit out of ‘we ain’t talkin’.’ First we make goddamn sure that everybody knows we ain’t saying anything.”

Did he mean in VH? Well, they’re certainly stickin’ to their guns with that one. Only problem is, the silence becomes deafening. It is truly time to speak o’ captain my captain.

“There comes a point, if you’re lucky, where you enter a pantheon of heroes where you’re known for what you’ve done, not what you’re doing now, or what you’re going to do in the future. ”

My friends, meet the gate keepers of the pantheon of heroes.

Love that guitar. Broke that one out for “Cradle” at my show.

  • http://vhnd.com VH4

Some great comments from Dave, ones I don`t remember hearing before. VH transcend music, and DLR transcends the description of “a class act”. Both are sooo much more than that. In charge of propaganda eh? VH have gone for everyone knowing they ain`t talkin` instead!

  • garysamuelroth

    Thank you!!!

  • ShyBoy

I’ve never seen that color scheme on Ed’s guitar before…I like it.

  • RH

“In America, we believe big time in publicizing the shit out of ‘we ain’t talkin’.’ First we make goddamn sure that everybody knows we ain’t saying anything.”

need we speculate more? That’s so awesome.

  • Ted

Really cool pictures man! They should be in the album book or what you’re gonna call it :D

  • evhua

now it’s time for Van Halen to transcend music in 2011 !!!!!

  • Mike

    Bingo folks!

  • JACK N SAM

Thank you. I was beginning to think this was the SHND :)

Like him or hate him – Dave certainly can express himself very well.

Not the most flattering image of Wolfie back there :)

I remember when he said that about what you have done is more important than what you are doing. He went on to point out that on the latest tour with Gary, they were opening their show with Mean Streets.

  • Mark22

Dave has always been so proud of the classic Van Halen legacy. I love it when he speaks with so much reverence for the team.

  • Roth_Leaps_83

“There’s only one David Lee. I’m the fun in Van Halen, always will be. My belligerent enthusiasm is as optimistic as ever. When I go fishin’, I take a Nikon and a frying pan.”

Truer words have never been spoken. Dave always was the fun in VH, and now with the book of bitterness released by Sammy, it seems more blatant than ever. Let’s hope he stays for good in VH because we really need him there.

“It is purely magical to be part of a dynasty. There comes a point, if you’re lucky, where you enter a pantheon of heroes where you’re known for what you’ve done, not what you’re doing now, or what you’re going to do in the future.”

Roth-era Van Halen is definitely in that same pantheon as Mick and Keith, Page and Plant. I’ve argued for years that VH is the greatest American rock band of all time — so please dont bore with me with the Aerosmith and Bon Jovi crap. They werent nearly as innovative or virtuous as the Mighty Halen. It still amazes me to this day that a small band out of Pasadena produced the greatest frontman and greatest guitarist in music history. Dreams can come true.

  • Tommy Boy

Just an fyi….that really cool guitar is one of the EVH Charvel Art Series. Look ‘em up…there’s several (unsure how many, someone knows) that Ed personally striped to look quite unique.

  • Shazbot

Meh. Like most latter-day Dave-isms, that’s mostly gibberish.

I always liked this one from a TV interview in the 1984 era: “I don’t consider rock and roll to be music. I consider rock and roll to be far superior to music!”

  • Tater Salad

Love it! Dave is great at being interviewed. If you ever need inspiration, just look up a Dave interview on YouTube. Lol.

This was kinda weird…that last picture my iPod with it’s messed up screen put a halo over Daves head. Usually when it does that, the screen goes haywire. This time it didn’t. And the little dots that made the halo moved with Daves picture. That has NEVER happened before…
    Very interesting.

  • http://www.hmdesigners.com WaveyDavey

Or to put it another way.. we won’t be recording new material. haha

Get on with it.. you know we all want it.. and make the effort to play UK and Europe while you’re at it.

    Roll on the Mighty VH!!!!

    : )

  • Keith

Sure wish Dave was in charge now . Ed and Al just don’t “Get it” … But, maybe Dave is secretly mentoring Janie . LOL

  • anythingleftinthatbottle

    That’s why!

  • Matt

It would be nice if there was new music to transcend.

  • No Mas Tony

Like KAYSER was saying, Roth is an articulate, passionate dude. “My belligerent enthusiasm is as optimistic as ever.” Fuck yeah, man. We need to hear more from the diamond one. Like I’m always saying, these little trips down memory lane are nice and all… But we need some current interviews and press teasers already! It’s about 8 months since the infamous ‘dog show update’. We’re about due!

LOL @ JACK N SAM — “the SHND”, I know what you mean, man. But when all they have to report on the brothers is that they went out to eat?! Yeah, glad the good folks at the VHND could spin this, “filed under David Lee Roth / Van Halen” story. I am happy not to read any more of the crap about Sammy’s book. But nowadays, the only time Van Halen’s name is mentioned it’s old war stories. :-(

  • Dooley

Pretty soon it’ll be April. 7 months earlier is when Dave was spotted at a local public event (in Northern CA I think it was), as reported here on VHND. And he said “we” will have something to say about what’s up with the band about 7 or 8 months from now.

It’s time, guys. At some point continued silence will become a platter of hot steaming B.S. Not askin’ for much, just a follow-up. Some people here say they don’t owe us anything. Yeah, they do…they owe us a follow-up.

  • http://none california dave

I saw all the shows from 78-84 with Dave and there is not a greater front-man in Rock! CLASSIC VAN HALEN IS DAVID LEE ROTH, EDWARD VAN HALEN, ALEX VAN HALEN, AND MICHAEL ANTHONY! LONG-LIVE THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN!

  • Fonso

    “…..hey I heard you missed us ?! we’re baaack,”

  • Fonso

    CHAZZ
Let me ask you a question. Which side did you take in the big Van Halen / David Lee Roth split?
    MOORE
    Uh…what do you mean?
    MILO
What kind of question is that?
    CHAZZ
Which way did you go, man? Roth or Halen?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-HAAAAAAAAAAA! Last night driving home from work I popped in Romeo Delight live from the US Festival. I was there, but re-visiting the f’n awesomeness of the opening song just gave me chills. Dave, you ARE the man, always will be.

  • TMH

if/when VH’s official website gets updated, I think we’re all gonna go though the roof !

  • greg

That first picture was taken at the show I saw in Boston. It was the same day as the Red Sox championship parade in 2007 and Wolfie had the Red Sox logo on his bass and the red sock hanging off the end. Awesome show and I can’t wait to see them again (hopefully!)

  • littlebigtoe

No Dooley, they don’t owe us anything.

  • Adrian

    Nice Frankie!!!!

  • Rack of What?

RothLeaps: Did you REALLY say “don’t bore me with Aerosmith”? You’re dissing Aerosmith? Your partisanship runs deeper than anybody’s on here, but that comment crosses the line.

In your mind, Halen only had 6 REAL albums. So, 6 albums constitutes the best ever? Interesting……

  • Roth_Leaps_83

    Rack of What —

Yes, dont bore me with Aerosmith! They’re a great American band, but dont even dare put them above the Mighty Halen. I dont give a shit how many albums they produced, or how long they been together. Just look at their body of work and compare that to the six Roth-era VH albums — Van Halen smokes ‘em. I dont think Steven Tyler judging “American Idol” is winning them any converts, either.

Also, some of you need to relax about Dave’s statement from the sheepdog show. Dave doesnt speak in absolutes. If he said “you’ll be hearing from us in 7-8 months”, then you can assume he meant within a year’s time or so. Dave usually peppers his interviews with phrases like “I did that many summers ago” so you cant hold him to specific time frames. However, I still trust Dave a lot more than Eddie or Alex about this new album — so if Dave is giving hints it’s coming out soon then you can take that to the bank!

  • http://vhnd.com VH4

@Rack of What? – dissing Aerosmith seems reasonable. They made two excellent rock albums (Toys In The Attic and especially Rocks). VH made 6 undeniably astonishing records and 4 other ones that vary in greatness depending on your perspective, so I don`t think it`s that crazy to suggest Aerosmith are not in the same galaxy, they were nowhere near the innovation and virtuosity of Dave, Ed, Alex and Mike. Joe Perry shunned Ed one time didn`t he, at a show? Something Ed took as a slight because he`d raised the guitar bar just too high for some!

  • jb

ROTH LEAP couldnt agree with you more Aerosmith at their best wasnt half VH in their prime.

  • freddiegirl

I agree with Roth Leaps on this one about VH being the best band that America’s ever produced. The only thing Aerosmith has on VH is longevity but otherwise..as far as influence and innovation…VH is where it’s at.

VH4, yes, Perry did shun Ed at a show and then later came out and admitted that it was sour grape on his part.

  • Dooley

It’s been awhile since Aerosmith cranked out their good stuff. Their only recent gem was the live version of “Seasons of Wither” done a few years back at the Hard Rock showroom in Vegas. Tyler’s involvement on American Idol is bad for the band and rock & roll in general…unless he gets the band together on short notice and they do a live mini-set on American Idol. That would be cool, but I ain’t holdin my breath.

  • temple5150

    Awesome…thanks Dave.

  • jim

Most of the people that are on this site hate the “publicizing the shit out of ‘we ain’t talkin’” method.
Those people either didn’t know what it was like before the internet or myspace, facebook, twitter, etc has gotten the best of them.

I love it. It’s great. It’s yet one other of the thousands of reasons why VH is/was/will always be the best.

  • Bo sox

Dave is awesome and DLR era VH is the best. That said, I never understand what Dave is talking about. I think I do then he looses me.

  • Brian

As long as DLR is silent…things are good.
    Hilarious stuff, VHND.

  • Tommy Boy

Jim….wholeheartedly agree. Spoiled motherfuckers. Gotta have it, know it, look at it, hear it….
RIGHT FUCKING NOW!!! Oh wait….I can’t have it that way? Shit….

  • narrowback

    Ah…what?

  • Roth_Leaps_83

I’m mostly glad VH has decided to go old school on us and keep this new album progress under wraps. It just builds more anticipation. I remember being in 8th grade and hearing “Jump” explode on my eardrums for the first time — sent chills down my young innocent spine with that opening synth riff and Dave’s demonic scream! Shit, I even had that same reaction when I first heard “Me Wise Magic” rip-assing it’s way across the internet. Only Roth-VH has that kind of effect on me.

That being said, we do live in the Twitter Age and it’d be nice to see just one photo of ALL the dudes at 5150 hard at work on a new track. Even if it’s a janitor willing to get fired because of it — take a damn cell phone picture of the guys in action and share it with the world.

  • JACK N SAM

Fonso – cool man. Love that. Or my personal favorite:

“Now get out of my Van Halen t-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up!”

  • getchabite

Love the quote about going fishin and taking a Nikon and a frying pan. He has used that in more than one interview.
One of Dave’s best classic lines.

  • Atomic Pete

In America, we believe big time in publicizing the shit out of ‘we ain’t talkin’.’ First we make goddamn sure that everybody knows we ain’t saying anything.”

Gee maybe the whole “not saying anything about
    what’s happening”thing is actually Dave’s idea
    not Ed’s.

  • THE ATOMIC PUNK

There is but one god…And its spelled……….

    VH

  • Roger Rackit

Okay Dave, Ed, Al and Wolf how about some brand new fun…….NEW MUSIC BOYZ!!!
