Summer Lovin’: The Top 10 Songs to Cure the Winter Blues

From Gibson.com:

Some of us are freezing in the middle of winter in the northern hemisphere. For those readers, here are some songs to warm you up with thoughts of sunshine. For those of us partying by the pool in the southern hemisphere, here’s your summer soundtrack.

10. “Kokomo” – The Beach Boys
9. “Sunshine Superman” – Donovan
8. “Summer in the City” – The Lovin’ Spoonful
7. “Wipe Out” – The Surfaris
6. “Summer of ’69″ – Bryan Adams

5. “Summer Nights” – Van Halen

With David Lee Roth, Van Halen were the ultimate, late-night party band. On their first album with Sammy Hagar, 5150, they were the archetypal purveyors of roof-down, cruisin’ by the beach rock. The lone guitar on the intro to “Summer Nights” is a classic of the “Dude, turn the radio up – I love this song” variety, and the chorus prompts an inescapable sing-along. You can practically smell the hot vinyl from the dashboard and the dizzying aroma of sunscreen and ice cream as the song moves through its myriad key changes and returns to the intro riff for one last big round of choruses.

4. “California Girls” – David Lee Roth

The Beach Boys’ original version of this song is an undisputed classic, and its musical and cultural influence cannot be underestimated or overstated. But David Lee Roth’s 1985 cover had just as much of an impact, albeit in a different way. In his autobiography, Crazy From the Heat, Roth explains that the video’s unique, color-saturated look, for which he won the Cinematographer Award from Kodak, was a direct result of the glacier goggles he refused to take off during editing. “I did not see the video till a month later, when it shows up on MTV, and it looks like somebody nuked the set,” Roth writes. “It looks like Chernobyl meets Chuck Jones. It’s electrifying.” Roth claims the video directly influenced the look of subsequent videos by many other artists.

3. “Summertime Blues” – Eddie Cochran
2. “Here Comes the Sun” – The Beatles
1. “California Dreamin’” – The Mamas & The Papas

  • Keith

Here we go again, another list …

  • Dooley

Many people thought “Summer of 69″ was about three months in 1969. But according to Bryan Adams, it wasn’t. heh heh…

Now we’re talkin. Nice way to spend the summer.

  • jeff adams

Classic video, great song, and Dave your the man. This is what I always loved about Dave, great sense of humor, intelligent, w/ the ability to get serious and put out great interveiws, music, and videos.

  • Rack of What?

Jeff Adams, did you really just say Dave “w/the ability to get serious”??

    Serious about what?

BTW: These songs suck, except Summer Nights…..and Sunshine Superman

  • rockn

Agreed Jeff…Plus the bikini clad ladies were smokin hott!!

  • Shayne

Crap list…who comes up with this stuff?

DROP DEAD LEGS has gotta make atleast the TOP 5

    mamas and papas? WTF?

  • mickey j

No “Ice Cream Man”? Lame… Whens the new album coming out?

  • Ted

I love Summer Nights, It’s a classic VH (Hager) song from 5150. Love it ;)

  • EMN5150

California Girls and Yankee Rose are classics! Those are great videos. I love all the bizarre weirdos DLR had in the videos. You also have to love all the stereotyping! They just don’t make good humor original videos like that anymore.

    “Into the sunshine zone”

“forget about babe, forget about it”

    Yeah baby!

  • EMN5150

    woo!

  • Roth_Leaps_83

“It looks like Chernobyl meets Chuck Jones”

Dave always had the best one-liners. If Roth’s cover and video of “California Girls” doesn’t put you in the mood for summer, then you probably dont have a pulse.

Personally, “Jump” and “Panama” seem like the perfect summer songs to me — put the windows down and crank it loud.

I also like that “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves — a perfect summer song if I ever heard one.

  • 51504VH

This sure isn’t my list but the California Girls video was the best video ever.

  • Tommy Boy

“Beautiful Girls” is ALWAYS a VH summer fav….I’m a bum in the sun and I’m havin’ fun!!

  • freddiegirl

Hmm…good list but I have to agree with Tommy Boy…Beautiful Girls is a great summer VH tune along with Dance the Night Away and Feel Your Love Tonight. Heck, almost all of the Dave-era VH stuff reminds me of summer and makes me happy!

My vote for best video has to be Hot For Teacher though, that’s CVH at their funniest and cleverist!

  • Let’s Rock

That my friends, is a Top Ten List for the ages!!!

    The Nation Waits

  • jeff adams

I meant Dave gets serious about putting out great funny shit that sounds awesome. It may not make sense to you, but it make damn good sense to me. Agreed about “Beautiful Girl” got a drink in my hand, toes in the sand. Classic!

  • Roth_Leaps_83

Also think that “Feel Your Love Tonight” is a great summer tune…..makes you wanna bone that cute honey in the Daisy Duke short shorts and skimpy tank top walking down your road on a muggy afternoon!

  • No Mas Tony

Hell yeah, Diamond Dave was the king of MTV back in the 80′s! Who can forget “Dave TV”? :-D And his music videos with Van Halen were iconic, especially “Hot for Teacher”… the greatest music video of all time IMHO. I gotta say, I LOVED both eras of VanHalen but they really never made any decent videos with Hagar. I remember Ed saying in an interview that he was pretty much “video’d out” after all the ones Dave pretty much forced him to do for 1984… so he wanted to chill with them after awhile.

But yeah, musically, Van Halen with Hagar made some amazing songs. “Summer Nights” is one of those feel-good, ‘open-a-cold-beer-on-a-summer-night-and-blast-the-radio’ kinda songs. So is “Cabo Wabo” off OU812 and a bunch of their other songs.

I wish that I was born on 1954 instead of 1974 (stupid non-existent time machines)… but, as soon as I was old enough to drink a beer (the formulative years ;-) ), VanHalen with Roth was splitting up, so throughout HighSchool and the military, we were hearing Van Halen on the radio with Hagar and that’s when I started digging their music…

But still love a lot of the classics like “In a Simple Rhyme” and “Beautiful Girls” as some others mentioned— great summer jam.

  • D.O.A.

Ed’s intro does kick ass on that tune…I’ve always thought Summer Nights was an underrated VH song.

Don’t take the list personal gang, it’s just some fun songs that make ya think about warmer weather ahead.

    Add to it!

  • No Mas Tony

hah hah, LETS ROCK— You’ve got the right idea, man!

  • Dawn

I always think of summer when I hear “Dance the Night Away”. And Panama, the top has to be down for that one!

  • mjc

    @ let’s rock,damn right!

  • alexandre

Let’s rock, i’m with you! Listen to Van Halen always makes my days seems summer days!!

  • dude

Beautiful Girls. Now there is a summer song for ya!

  • SCAR

Shit, Let’s Rock, you got that right!!!! That’s the entire soundtrack to any summer day!!!!!

  • jim

I heard a strange story about Dave during the 1984 tour with VH.

After the concerts, Dave would sit in the door of the tour bus and have the road manager douse his feet in Perrier.

  • SCAR

    Van Halen Fucking Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Panama Red

I’m in the mood to slack off even though I really should get some shit done. Get shit done?….or be a slacker? The shit will still be there when I’m done slacking right?
    Slacker it is.

I love the Beach Boys, but I’m not that big on “Kokomo.” Their earlier stuff is what gets me. “In My Room”, “Surfer Girl”, “Don’t Worry Baby”, “God Only Knows” – songs like seem timeless to me. I guess I’m kinda missing the point though, it’s supposed to be a list of Summer influenced songs. But then again almost every Beach Boys song makes me think of summer time.

“Sunshine Superman” – When I get in the mood for 60′s music this song is okay, it’s not one of my favorites. It doesn’t really remind me of summer though as much as it makes me think of acid trips.

Listening to “Summer in the City” makes me ancy or something. I don’t like it at all. I don’t like the way it sounds. It makes me feel like I drank too much coffee or something. The way the guy sings, it’s weird…slow down dude, calm down you sound weird. Or is it just me? It’s probably me…

“California Girls” – of course I like it. I like all the songs on Dave’s EP from ‘85.
I watched this video recently and for some reason I hadn’t realized that the car behind Dave when he’s singing the part about the southern girls (at 1:50) is his ride from the Panama video (the custom Mercury convertible) IDK why I never put 2 & 2 together. And is that Waldo from Hot For Teacher at 0:25 and then it looks like Waldo is all growns up at 1:03. Also at 0:30 looks like the chick from Dave’s Yankee Rose video, the one who wanted all the tic tacs. At least it wasn’t the lady that needed a laxative.
I know I’m ridiculous and I should really stop but at 0:40 it looks like Daphne from Frasier. Ha.
Just the other day I was browsing David Lee Roth interview videos on Youtube and I came across one where he was on David Letterman. It was just after the California Girls video was released and he was talking about how he directed it and everything. I didn’t realize how many old DLR interview videos there were available to watch on youtube. When I have some more time (or wanna be a slacker) I’m gonna go find some more to watch. He gives some of the most entertaining interviews. Back in this old interview, Letterman asked hm if it meant that he was gonna break up with VH since he was doing a solo project. And DLR said No, that he would get back in th studio soon and “argue” some more with the guys and VH would probably release a new album by summer. DOH!!

“Wipeout” I Love surf music. Although I like a lot of the other surf songs more, just because this one has been so overplayed throughout the years.

“Summer of ‘69″ Could never get into Bryan Adams music….not that I ever really had much of an interest in trying to get into his music.

Damn I love “Summer Nights.” It’ one of those songs which instantly puts a visual in my head. More so than just about any other Van Halen song. Every time I hear that song I want to go hang out by the lake with a cooler full of ice cold beer, a warm breeze, and just chill with a radio and a couple of good friends. Such a good song.

“Summertime Blues” – Haven’t heard that song in a long time. Sometimes I get in the mood for 50′s music. I think this song is okay, not a favorite but I like it okay. It’s nostalgic, I wasn’t alive back then so that doesn’t really make sense…but I like 50′s music anyway.

“Here Comes the Sun” – Great song, we played it at our wedding. I think George Harrison was overshadowed a little because of the genius of John Lennon and the dynamic between McCartney and Lennon. But Wow, George Harrison was Awesome.

“California Dreamin” Obviously puts the visual of California weather and beauty in my head but it also reminds me of the movie “Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story” because that song is in the movie and I’ve seen that movie 2 or 3 million times.

@ mickey j – Wow, Ice Cream Man. Good call, it didn’t even occur to me. Even though the song was a euphemism and had nothing to do with “Ice Cream”
    ;)
but still a good choice. I still don’t know what Dave is saying in a part of that song. “I got boon bahn b nana ????
…dixie cups, all flavors and push ups too.”
    Wha?

@ Tommy Boy- another good call that I didn’t think of. Beautiful Girls is a perfect candidate for a summer song list. I don’t know why my brain isn’t retrieving the Van Halen files that are stored somewhere in there. Maybe it’s because my brain is clogged with malted hops and bong resin. J/K I had to throw part of a ‘Tommy Boy’ movie quote in there since I am in fact addressing Tommy Boy.

@ rockn – I know, what a job, right? Casting insanely hot (except for the muscle bound lady…ooooh gives me chills) bikini clad women for a music video. And then after the video…..gee, I wonder what took place…
Damn what a life Dave Roth has led. I feel like quoting Napoleon Dynamite in his monotone voice – Luckeee

I gotta stop coming to VHND. Geez.

  • bigfoot1141

Ok, so we get the video for Caifornia Girls but no video for Summer Nights? REALLY?????!!!!!!! Boys it’s on Youtube from the Live Without A Net show.

  • Tommy Boy

Panama Red – You’re right, “Summer in the City” sucks…always hated it. Freddiegirl has the right take: ALL VH tunes are great summer songs! (or any fuckin’ season for that matter!) “Pleasure Dome” ” Feels So Good” and “Fools” just came on my iPod in succession. Point proven. Peace folks!

  • JACK N SAM

Summer Nights definitely (written while Dave was still in the band btw) It has that party vibe and I always think of summer when I hear it.

I had just finished a job interview that would start me on the next 20 years of my life and I was sitting in my Nissan Sunny (Sentra) parked on the beach with my sandy bare feet on the dash sipping a bottle of beer and staring out at the blue caribbean sea when I first heard Feels So Good, so that will always be a summer song for me. Cabo Wabo also.

Diver Down was always more of a summer album for me than 1984 I guess because it was released right before summer and that was my first VH concert, and 1984 came out in the winter.

Styx’s Renegade is also a summer song for me – always picture a cowboy riding in the hot desert sun.

  • http://vhnd Jimmy

Beautiful Girls is so summer and Drop Dead Legs.

  • Tommy Boy

JacknSam: I read somewhere a while back that Renegade was one of Ed’s fav songs…it is pretty cool.

  • JACK N SAM

Thanks a lot for sharing that Tommy Boy. I was a huge Styx fan before I discovered VH and have always wondered what Ed thought of their music. JY’s work on Renegade is not fancy but it is full of soul to me and I would put it right up there with anything Ed has done, in terms of emotion.

  • DiamondDean

I agree DIVER DOWN is easily the most summer album by VH , little guitars , dancing in the streets secrets , where have all the good times gone , great summer songs

Yes BEAUTIFUL GIRLS is the most summer of VHs songs definately, its got it down pat

Summer nights is a great song , but it was never released as a single and never had a decent video so i dont see how it wld be popular ???

Californian girls , well this is an alltime classic! summer or any other season . It was popular #3 second only to JUMP in the VH catalogue , an iconic video which they still play today

Gees wheres BOYS OF SUMMER , if not the greatest summer song ever

  • Dawn

Styx still tours around me alomost every year and I always go. They put on a fun show. I even saw them years back (2006) with Dave on the bill when he was going solo.

  • rebel

    What about “Beautiful Girls”
I always thought of Summer listening to that one.

  • Tater Salad

Oh boy, there are WAAAY too many great summer songs to make a list! All VH is summer music to me! The Beach Boys too, but I wouldn’t choose Kokomo as my “summer” song from them. More like Surfin USA, Help Me Rhonda, etc. Kokomo has always seemed more “end of summer” song for me. WACF and 1984 will always be the most summer of all the VH albums for me though, cause that’s when I first heard each. I’m agreeing with the majority on here, Beautiful Girls is definetly a summer party song! I can’t listen to that song without having the urge to get up and dance!

I think I mentioned not too long ago that Ive been listening to Summer Nights a lot lately. I think that may be one of my favorite Sammy era songs. It’s just got a great, sunny vibe to it. I love the guitar part, and the VH harmonies are like icing on the cake!

California Girls is also an awesome song. I remember figuring out the intro guitar part for the Beach Boys version and having this huge smile on my face because of it. I love Daves version! Gotta love how he describes the video lol.

  • non-stop talker

Panama Red: I got puddin’ pie, banana, ahh! n’ Dixie cups…All flavors, and push-ups, too. I’m your ice cream man, baby…

  • Tommy Boy

Hey Panama Red…I’ve always been a fan of Bryan Adams. Solid songwriting. Check out “Into the Fire”. Victim of Love (good for those that have been jilted…like me a coupla times), Remembrance Day and Native Son were some good tunes. This was a slight departure from his earlier “pop” stuff (which was still really good)

  • Crazy5150

Summer Night’s was a big hit on Kiss 108, WCOZ and WBCN here in Boston, MA back in 1986 and 1987 and only the guitar part of the song was writen in 1985 when Dave was actually not with Van Halen and was doing Dave TV. The lyrics were true by Sammy Hagar one hell of a summer song one hell of a rock and roll party song!!!!

  • Fair Warning

Summer Nights is one of the great Van Halen songs of all time. Just a fun song to turn up load.

  • phillster

“Sunburn” off of “Your Filthy Little Mouth”
is one of my favorite summer tunes.

  • phillster

    First you take a finger,
    Press it on your skin,
    Makes a little white mark,
    Then it turns red again.

  • Panama Red

@ non-stop talker, Thanks, I just couldn’t figure out the “puddin’ pie” part. I thought maybe Dave was just doing his ‘scat’ type singing that he does sometimes, but I wasn’t for sure, thanks.

@ Tommy Boy – I try to keep an open mind towards just about everything so I looked those songs up on youtube that you recommended. His style/sound isn’t my cup of tea though. But I still appreciate the suggestions dude.
