VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

HUGE VAN HALEN UPDATE: Van Halen’s 2011 Plans and The TRUTH Behind The Rumors

The following breaking news is sure to come as a welcome Holiday gift for Van Halen fans around the world who’ve been dying to know if the band is planning on releasing new music or touring in the near future.

Sources tell the Van Halen News Desk that the band is very eager to tour, and that they want to tour behind new material. Eddie Van Halen has been very busy during most of 2010 writing music. Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen often join Eddie in the 5150 studio and the three of them have been hard at work jamming and recording demos. The three Van Halens have been sending the music to David Lee Roth, who’s adding the lyrics. Two of our sources have heard some of the early versions of the tracks (without vocals) and were very pleased. The music is said to sound like straight ahead rock ‘n’ roll and “very Van Halen.”

After talking to several producers, the band has chosen GRAMMY award winner producer/songwriter/musician John Shanks (whom Clive Davis calls “the father of that guitar-driven kind of pop sound”). In January, 2011, David, Eddie, Alex & Wolfgang will head into the studio to begin recording with the much sought-after producer. The band is hopeful that the recording sessions will lead to a full studio album that would be completed and available sometime next year.

Interestingly, the band is planning on recording in John Shank’s Henson Studio as well as Van Halen’s 5150 Studios, making next month the first time Van Halen will record anywhere outside of their own studio since it was built, in 1983. (Except for when Hagar recorded some in his vocals in Canada during the Balance sessions).

We are excited to learn that the band is re-exploring Eddie’s extensive library of unreleased songs and riffs, even reaching back to their early unreleased demos for added inspiration. The band is retooling and tweaking some of this mostly-unheard, incredible music, which have completely new lyrics from Roth. Eddie is even considering developing a song or two from the material that he wrote for The Wild Life movie score in the mid 1980′s.

Although this news is not coming straight from the band or their publicist, we can tell you with certainty that it isn’t just another rumor that will turn out to be false, as most rumors do. These are indeed Van Halen’s current goals. We at the Van Halen News Desk have several reliable sources close to, or within the Van Halen camp, who give us solid Van Halen updates whenever they make any major plans. Our relationships with these contacts were established during the years of our publishing the official Van Halen fan magazine, “The Inside”, and through our associations while running VHND.com and VanHalenStore.com.

We want to clarify that, while this news sounds very promising for fans, NOTHING is set in stone as far as a definite album or tour. The band is hoping to have a new album and tour, but only time will tell if it all comes to fruition. There is no timetable for anything yet.

Despite their grand plans, it is very unlikely that there will be any confirmation from Van Halen themselves about any of this. The band has a definite policy of not talking until their plans are 100% solid and everything is in place. They don’t want to announce any plans that might not pan out, so as to not disappoint fans.

A source close to David Lee Roth tells us that he’s been getting in top physical shape for the potential tour and has been writings tons of lyrics.

We also have another source who’s spent some time with Eddie Van Halen recently. Ed seems to be doing better than ever these days. He’s been completely sober for over 2 1/2 years. He has surrounding himself with positive, encouraging people, among them his wife Janie, bandmates Alex and Wolfgang, and friend and business partner, Matt Bruck. His schedule is early to bed, early to rise, and he’s keeping very focused on staying sober, writing new music and running his EVH brand. We are really happy to hear he’s in a wonderful place these days.

The TRUTH about the Van Halen rumors:

And now for the die-hard fans, the Van Halen News Desk will tackle all the currently widespread rumors and either shoot them down or confirm them as true.

Rumor: Van Halen are working towards finishing recording of a new studio album with David Lee Roth and a single is slated for release before the end of this year.
FALSE. The band starts recording in January.

Rumor: The band will tour extensively in 2011, taking in North America, and likely European and Australian dates.
FALSE. Although a 2011 tour may occur, no such tour is currently planned.

Rumor: Numerous reports about new music coming from the band are true. There is new music recorded with the expectation of an all-new studio album featuring David Lee Roth to be released in 2011. What is not known right now is the time frame for this.
Mostly TRUE. The band has written lots of new music and hopes to complete an album, but a nothing is definite right now.

Rumor: DLR’s vocals are being recorded away from the 5150 studio.
Misleading. This is true, but only in regards to the early demos, not the final recordings. This is what many bands do before entering the studio. The entire band will reconvene in the studio in January.

Rumor: Eddie has recorded most of the bass parts for the album.
FALSE. Eddie might have recorded some of the bass parts for the early demos when Wolfie wasn’t around, as he often did when Michael Anthony was in the band. Wolfgang has been recording demos all year, and he’ll be playing all the bass parts on the finished tracks.

Rumor: There is a deal in place between Warner Bros. and the band for a new album.
FALSE. If a new album is released, it will most likely be a direct deal with Walmart or Best Buy.

Rumor: Van Halen has chosen Ross Hogarth to produce new music.
Mostly false. Hogarth is an engineer rather than a producer, and worked with them for a bit this year, but is not currently involved with Van Halen. The producer they chose is John Shanks.

Rumor: Chris Cornell from Soundgarden has recorded some background vocals on some of the new music.
FALSE.

Rumor: A spokeperson for Van Halen recently clarified that the band isn’t doing anything and that there will definitely be no new album or tour next year.
FALSE. A spokeperson for Van Halen did indeed shoot down the recent rumors of a planned tour and an album near completion. He was being honest in doing so, since there is currently neither a tour planned, nor an album near completion. However, he did say that the band is currently “working on stuff”, but gave no further details.

Rumor: The main reason that the band never released a DVD of the 2007-2008 tour was because the band members could not reach a financial agreement over the deal.
FALSE. The reason that it wasn’t released had nothing at all to do with finances. The band simply wasn’t happy enough with the footage.

Rumor: Warner Bros is preparing to release Blu-Ray editions of “Live Without a Net” and “Live Right Here Right Now.”
Unknown. We don’t know if this is true or not.

Rumor: Warner Bros is preparing to release re-masters of the four Sammy Hagar era Van Halen CDs.
Partially True. Rhino is talking about releasing remasters of the Sammy Hagar era albums, but nothing has been decided yet.

Stay tuned to VHND.com for the truth about Van Halen 2011!

  • Eric

    Wow, great news!!
This is what i’ve been waiting for for many years.
I really hope they are going to do a concert here in Holland.

  • Keith

Why can’t VH reward us patient fans with something ? Like a new group photo ? A “teaser” track ? a video message ? something for God sakes !!!

  • Steve

All of this talk is extremely lame and anal. It is clear that on matter what happens people are going to bitch and moan just like Ed said in a magazine interview

  • ersan5150

    Tim,

“Its My life” rescued Bon Jovi from obscurity. Good for them. But to begin with, that band was an accessible/popularized version of Van Halen circa 1986. Van Halen, even when they had radio hits, sounded nothing like the popular music of its day. The magic came from the genius of Eddie, Alex and the two other highly-accomplished members that created a cohesive rock-quartet sound.

In my opinion, Van Halen set the musical standards that other bands followed. It’s harder in this musical climate to accomplish anything like that, but I am hopeful that they won’t follow the radio-formula of 2010. It won’t be 1978 all over again, either (remember, they tried classic VH in several songs from ou812 with mixed results).

Well, these guys are so special, they give us something to talk about all the time, don’t they. I’m sure when Mozart and Beethoven were alive their fans wanted their opinions to be heard, too:)

  • ersan5150

Why do this fan have high hopes from a new Van Halen album:
Although most fans were disappointed by their new music in the last two decades, there bits and pieces of musical ideas across the new songs that were very powerful, and musically fresh. Like the bridge and the chorus of Me Wise Magic, and its solo. I also think songs like Amsterdam, Fire in the Hole, and Up for Breakfast were full of bright ideas (may be a little overburdened by one too many ideas per song that prevented them to sound cohesive and direct enough).

Well, I’ve been waiting since 1991 for an album-lenght, pure Van Halen bliss, whatever it may sound like. Now that grunge has been dead and buried for a over a decade, and that there are no record companies, radio, music TV, or press left around to please, brothers Van Halen have all the freedom in the world to make the music that they want to hear! I hope that the producer is a fan of Van Halen and will let them be themselves. Hey, Eddie looks very happy and ready to rock the world again!

  • RR

Not worried about this potential producer. VH has always been a pop band.

  • Ted

I’m not worried about the producer ether, I mean the music will blow his mind and then he won’t have anything say about it..

  • Fear of a Sparkless Horizon

Holy crapoly. This thread still goin’? I’ll throw this out there, then I swear I’m done (yeah right)

To the ones who lambast Daves aging voice and the lack of Mikes backing vocals- Listen to the Diamond Dave cd. Namely Stay while the Night is Young and Shoo Bop. The guy has got it all worked out with making it work in the studio. It’s not like comparing Elton Johns voice from the 70′s to now. The guy oozes cool and it’s going to sound appropriate and great. I’m sure of it. As for the backing vocals- it’s part of the evolution. Seriously, at this point, I’d welcome the session musician backing vocals as heard on much of Daves solo stuff and pipe in the live show. I’ve seen Aerosmith do it for years (ofcourse, in that case, it’s multiple layers of Steven Tylers voice) and it’s no big ‘ting. Remember this: Live performance is only temporary. Recording is forever. (paraphrased from the film geeks in 3 O’clock High. So true, no?)

  • IMNY

    Reality check (again)…

Quoting the story posted: “We want to clarify that, while this news sounds very promising for fans, NOTHING is set in stone as far as a definite album or tour. The band is hoping to have a new album and tour, but only time will tell if it all comes to fruition. There is no timetable for anything yet.”

I think we’d sooner see a child borne by EVH’s current wife than any new music or tour.

  • Jones

Wow, Fearless…on one hand Van Halen is recognized for their ‘raw’ work early. That’s what everyone cites as the definitive ‘Van Halen’ sound. Now, in order to defend the band against the ‘critics’, it’s being said that it’s okay to ‘pipe in’ sounds.

When Van Halen resorted to electronic drums and piped in vocals, it spelled the beginning of the end.

You, Fearless, may think it’s OK for the 2nd greatest rock band of all time to resort to those things. But, for me, I’ll take the RAW aspect of Chickenfoot over anything synthetic from Van Halen.

But, as with every Van Halen fan, I’m curious, and will buy it, no matter what.

  • Fear of a Sparkless Horizon

Jones, the #1 greatest band piped Michael Anthonys backing vocals in ’07 & ’08 and I could have cared less. Sure, I wish Mike was there but whataya gonna do? The attempts the kid made at singing were uh…fair? I’m staying positive.

  • Jones

Cheers Sparkless. I saw the same tour, and after the first half hour of “Holy Crap, that’s David Lee Roth on stage with Van Halen” wore off, I couldn’t help but notice how lacking the ‘kid’ was, both musically, and vocally. And, then, the silk shirt, bellbottom pants, and creepy smile that Roth couldn’t wipe off his face…..well, let’s just say I spent a lot of time after that cleaning out the luxury suite fridge!

Can’t wait for a new studio album though…!!

ps: I think they’d have been a LOT better off finding a bassist for that last tour. IMO

  • Halifax Dan

Am i the only one who thinks the 2 songs(Me wise Magic, Can’t get this stuff no more)they did in 1995 with Dave were some of the best VH songs ever? Whose to say they won’t pull it off again?

  • Gubgub109

    @Halifax Dan

Those two were indeed amazing. I hope they can put something together just as good.

  • phillster

Jonesy..How many times and how many different ways can you possibly say the same thing over&over? It`s no secret, you prefer CHNFT to the current=VH=lineup, big deal.
If you`re That “creeped out” by DIAMOND DAVE,that`s your OWN PERSONAL problem.Your intimidation of the guy behooves me.And for the record,MY radio stations play SOLO ROTH ALL THE TIME&NO CHNFT whatsoever.
Guess I`m just lucky that way…
Stop telling us to “get over it” about things that only Bother You.DAVE`S back,so maybe it`s YOUR turn to
“get over it” dude.It took me at least a Month(&buying a bootlegDVD) to mentally process how cool that last concert was.It took you 30min just to be bored with it??.
    Your Mental.

  • 51504VH

If I was Van Halen and read all of the negative bs on this site, I wouldn’t put anything out. They don’t owe anyone, anything. They obviously reached their peak many years ago and I’m sure that they would be the first to admit to that. People are really stupid if they honestly expect them to be able to put out an album that will compare to any of the first 4 albums that put them in the history books well before (Bozo the Boxing Clown) came into the picture and turned them into “real” Rock Stars…lol.

Idiots are complaining and giving their professional opinions to Van Halen about making music??????? Please!!!!!!!

I was at the ’83 U.S. Festival watching Van Halen and 30 other bands (No Sammy)along with 300,000 other people and Ozzy, Motley Crue, and Van Halen are the only bands that are still around and you people are complaining.

They will put out a new album and it will have some good material but I highly doubt that it is humanly possible at 60 years of age that it is going to be their best stuff.

I will buy the CD and be at the concert and hopefully all you true musicians/critics will be at your local bar watching Chickenlittle.

    Stop Complaining!

  • http://VHND HIKER MAN

CANT WAIT ITS GONNA BE GOOD, HUMANS BEINGS, UP FOR BREAKFAST WERE AS GOOD AS ANY VAN HALEN MUSIC EVER MADE, SO WAS YEAR TO THE DAY, GREAT VOCALS, GREAT GUITAR, ANYTHING ON BALANCE WAS GOOD TOO. NOTHING WILL EVER MATCH THE FIRST SIX ALBUMS, THEY ARE CLASSICS KINDA LIKE THE FIRST THREE KISS ALBUMS, THEY WERE NEVER THE SAME AFTER HTTER THAN HELL, SO HERES TO THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN RELEASE ANYTHING YOU WANT BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW IT’LL BE GREAT, ALL YOU VAN HALEN FANS HAVE A GOOD HOLIDAY SEASON.

  • DiamondDean

Halifax Dan, Loved both of those tunes , CGTSNM n MWM both shd be played live , Daves voice was a bit thin on CGTSNM though , but absolutely love the song , one of VHs best in my books

Fear of a Sparkless, Daves voice was great on the Diamond Dave cd , those two songs are perfect examples, i actually quite like the cds , my GF thinks its great , its differant but still bops along

The music has been getting longer with many differant parts , balance, vh3 are fine examples , Eddie is trying but imo is starting to lose his songwriting skills , its a shame but true. Dave is a better songwriter then hagar or cherone , the new producer will help ,Not everey song has to be 5or 6 minutes long

  • redarrow5150

To those who say DLR vocals weren’t very good on the last tour…I really don’t what you heard. I was very skeptical about how Roth would sound and he way exceeded my expectations. As for the video for the live concert shots…for all we know Eddie might not liked it because he was abusing drugs at the time and didn’t like what he heard or saw. I hope they produce a great album but they’ve treated the fans like shit the last 10 years so there’s so mending IMO that they need to do.

  • Roth_Babe_85

Dave’s voice sounded very good on the 2007-2008 reunion tour — especially during “I’ll Wait” when he hits that high sustained note right before Eddie’s solo…..that sent chills up and down my spine and I wanted to jump Dave’s bones because he still knows how to put on a great show!

  • patrick

redarrow5150…i really dont know what YOU heard, dave is rarley in key and often struggles hitting notes.i have no doubt that IF they release a album studio dave will sound great.

  • Steve

Bunch of bitching and moaning. I agree with those who do not appreciate all of the negative comments from those who come here because they are “fans” of VH. Unreal

  • ersan5150

During the reunion tour I was devastated to see that Dave’s voice wasn’t quite there, and I genuinely hope they can make it work in the studio. Dave’ voice sounds best in his solo records: much higher and brighter. And Dave sounded impressive singing the chorus of Me Wise Magic in 1996. The other curious thing is Sammy (with Mike) sounded incredible live in 2004, but he sounded pretty coarse in Balance in 1996, and on the two new tracks from 2004.

They will have to use some terrific backing vocals for the new album. And I hope they don’t do the spoken voice verses (Me Wise Magic, About time, etc.) that seem to be a way to give the singer a break.

  • mjc

This is great news.10-12 new jams with that fair warning sound does it for me.The only negatives i have is that they need a new manager who works for them only,Azoff is a clueless jackass. It’s also bullshit there’s no dvd of the last tour. The foot put out an excellent dvd, rush’s dvd’s are well done to.Ed probably hired on the cheap amateurs,so he got what he paid for. This could be thier last cd&tour,i hope it kicks ass on a world wide level!

  • Jones

phillster: take it easy young man. don’t be such a fascist. just because someone doesn’t have YOUR stance on Van Halen, doesn’t mean they’re ‘mental’.

I”m not the only one on here apprehensive about what kind of music we’re in for with VH. The last 19 years should be to blame for that….not me

And, Phillster, let me state for the record: I know every single lick and every single vocal on every single van halen album, even the ones that suck. Doesn’t that alone give me the right to an opinion? Or, is this only a place for ‘supportive comments’?

  • JK-47

Big deal about the producer. I didn’t realize Ted Templeman was such a huge force in hard rock when he was chosen back in the 70′s??.. Hell, the guy who produced VH III had no experience outside of music for TV.. Mick Jones?? What was his track record?? Bruce Fairbairn? Glenn Ballard? The only guy VH has ever worked with that had a strong rock background was Andy Johns!

  • Steve 5150

I honestly didn’t expect this reaction from the “fans”. I would have guessed that we would all be very happy to hear this news. Especially that VH has been able to land a current producer who is relevant. This guy wouldn’t have wanted his name attached to this project if he didn’t hear very promising demos. that’s the problem they had in 1997 working with Cherone. It took forever to find a producer and Glen Ballard backed out because they didn’t want their name attached to the album. Nothing but positives in the latest news folks. Can’t figure out for the life of me why the bitching and moaning continues.

  • karloff

Hmmm. Where should I start. VH. Album will be called what? Throw out some ideas ppl. I don’t think u r going to hear original music what I think u r going to hear is those Demos from back in the day that never made it to completion.they have tons and tons of recordings as eddie says.but that’s my opinion. VH. Album called. High Speed Low Drag. 2011.

  • YZ

    I still say, HOT DOG

  • Halifax Dan

Maybe they will call it “2011″ or “Van Halen 4″

  • http://www.youtube.com/joshkosh95 Josh

2011 or Van Halen IV, or I reckon something smart that refers to “new”. I believe that website about the album being called “Encore” is a fake rumour.

  • 51504VH

It can’t be “Encore” that was an Eminem album. I think that they will be a lot more creative than naming it VH 4 or 2011.

I believe that the first four VH albums were the best and will always define them as the “Real Van Halen” but I also have a stong feeling that they (Dave,Eddie,Alex, and Wolfgang) are all working really hard on this, they would have to be really stupid to not know that this new album is going to be the most reviewed album of 2011. It will either be the biggest come-back album or the biggest flop of the year.

In just a couple of weeks Van Halen, will be in the studio recording a new album…I can’t wait!!!

  • Dooley

Speaking of rumours, there’s one floatin’ around that the
band MAY update the official website with another Happy New Year message for 2011. And, IF this happens, there is a possibility the band MAY acknowledge that something MIGHT be up. But then again, maybe not.

  • Chomsky5150

Long live the mighty =VH= !! Looking foward to hear some new stuff!

  • Lance

Hearing that Eddie is still sober and in a good place, surrounded by positive people and keeping regular hours makes me happier than hearing about any album or tour. Don’t get me wrong. I’ll back flip all the way to Wal-mart or whereever to buy the music, but Eddie deserves some happiness and I’m glad to here he’s getting along good in life! Here’s to life Ed!

    Your fan in Iowa,

i lived in the city of angels for 4 years and loved seeing the atomic punks from 2000 – 2004 when i moved back to Milwaukee. don’t be jealous :0 Anyway, while i lived there one of the few people who befriended me was a big time real estate guy. he was showing a house 0f his his ( the model rachel hunters)this past february and eddie and Janie came by to see it. Apparently eddie was/is doing a huge remodel to his place and needed somewhere else to stay. My buddy works with big time people and said eddie was super nice, looked healthy and said he was working on new stuff with Roth. Eddie heard about him from other clients and trusted him. Anyway, eddie seemed super enthused about working on new stuff with his son and roth. the fact that dave and wolfy got along so well made a world of difference. i know that was almost a year ago, but its the real deal and eddie even said he was excited to be working with dave. absolutely true.

Im glad the Van Halen’s are workin on new material. I would imagine Eddie never stops writing. Personally, I would LOVE to just see a 3 piece jam. Never listened to Van Halen because of lyrics or vocals anyway. I’d love to see ‘em change instruments during the set, and Eddie even smoke some Cello or anything else they feel like playin. The Band IS called Van Halen for a reason, and now its truly Van Halen’s. Thats what Id like to see. The 3 of them as they truly are! Amazing musicians ripping up any instument you put in front of them!! Love the VH and thanks for inspiring me to wanna create music too!

  • Dan H

Oh man I can’t wait! Now I’ll be able to say I was alive when a Van Halen album with David Lee Roth was first released! I can’t wait to hear the new songs! The first time I ever saw Van Halen was on the 2007 reunion tour (although I don’t consider it a full-fledged reunion without Michael Anthony) and they kicked ass! I’m really excited to see them on tour for their new album

look. I’m a huge van halen fan but there comes a time when you have to accept the fact that there time has past. The reason they did’nt release a dvd is because the sound sucked! I was very disappointed in the quality of the sound. I saw them in gwinnett co. georgia at a brand new state of the art arena and i can honestly say I wasted $300 bucks. I felt like i was stood up on a date or something. They were probably 30 or 40 seconds into a song before i could figure out what they were playing! I love the band but enough is enough. I wish the van halens the best and roth too but damn! one more thing. Why do they have a web site there’s never anything new on it.

  • Quitcherbitchin

1977 was the first time I saw Van Halen. Hard to believe that I am still alive, nevermind the band! Anyway, these guys, in all of their many forms mind you, have given us all a boatload of tunes to rock out to over the years and I for one am sincerely grateful for all of it. Lots of memories in fact have been etched while listening to some Van Halen tune…Having said that, I gotta ask all of you that are busting these guys’ chops, to hit the road and go find something else to do, please! I, along with other true Van Halen fans, eagerly look forward to a compilation of new material, and I ahve no doubt that it will be pristine… because one must always remember that Ed and Dave have a special magic (as in Me Wise Magic for instance) when they collaborate, and no-one on the face of the planet can ever take that away from them, no matter how hard they try. Alex and Wolf will hold the line as well, and I strongly suspect that we are all in for one heckova treat! I think John Shanks will have an easy time of it, and also figure that this thing will be ready to go very quickly.

I look forward to the upcoming release, and the tour. I will certainly be in the front row of this one, at least once. Bring it on home, the world awaits!!!

  • adam daley

I love van halen! soundtrack to my life, i’m very happy for ed and his sobriaty i am so happy to have a new album and tour with DLR but i love sammy as well.i hope to be front row so eddie can see the tattoo i have of him on my left forearm.i love you guys keep on going. peace adam daley.

As much as I’m a -=Vh=- freak, I’ll believe a new CD is recorded when actually hold it in my hands…

  • MCG

I’ve been a fan of Van Halen since a mate of mine, here in England, gave me a tape cassette of Van Halen I in 1983! From that moment on I became a hooked on VH. I have bought every album and every Clip of Live Footage I could get my hands on. Eddie et al. have brought me untold listening pleasure through the years.

I have the utmost respect for these true musicians and their ‘showmanship’ is second to none! I have been fortunate enough to see many rock bands live, including Queen, Guns n Roses (original line up) Whitesnake etc. etc., but I have never had the privilege of watching the mighty Van Halen! They are the one band I have waited with baited breath to see, for years and years.

I am absolutely thrilled about the prospect of seeing the guys on stage! That would be a dream come true!!

Also, the possibility of a ‘new’ album is just fantastic news!!!

    Gentlemen…we Brits salute you!!!!
