Last week A.D.D. interviewed guitar guru Joe Satriani, who is currently on the road in Europe, to discuss his latest solo album, Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards. We also discussed the forthcoming Chickenfoot album, which is in the works. Back in the spring, Satriani mentioned that one song that the group was working on was called “Come Closer”.

“I haven’t listened to it in months,” confessed Satriani. “I’ve been busy, as you can tell. Right after I finished mixing the Black Swans record, I got home and had a few weeks and wrote 10 songs and sent them off to Sammy [Hagar]. Right now he’s sitting on 14 songs that he’s writing melodies and lyrics to, and the original band will get back together at the end of January to record Chickenfoot II. Right now my hand is totally into this [solo tour], so I don’t have any room for any other material. I am just getting to the point where I can memorize the tour set and start to mess around with it, so I don’t want to get another band’s set list into my head and disrupt everything.”

The guitarist added that literally right after he sent off his new compositions to Chickenfoot frontman Sammy Hagar, he told the singer that he would not listen to them for a couple of months, and to “take them and go crazy. I’ll wait till we all get together. We work better as a four-piece. We bring up song ideas and everyone gets their toes wet in arranging them and changing them, so I’m not worried about that. It’ll be more interesting for me to have the other guys throw the songs back at me with improvements. Then I will start to remember them that way. I hate listening to demos for months and months because you just get stuck on them. I’d rather not listen to them.”

Can’t wait. The first album kicked ass and I’m sure the second will as well. The FOOT rocks!

I wonder how many new songs eddie is sitting on.

  • Michael

    THIS IS AWESOME!

(wow, new music, what a concept)

    ROFL @ tj – nice.

Always fascinating to hear how musicians work. Interesting to see how Joe switches from one mindset to another and doesn’t want another bands music in his head for a while.

Can imagine doing a bunch of songs and them forgetting about them for months until getting back together with some mate to see what they have done with them will be a very enriching experience.

  • the joker

sweet, new Chickenfoot tracks sounds good to me. but what about the Van Halen brothers?

  • http://www.vhnd.com Pat G.

Thats cool. This one should rock like the last one did. Wonder what the VH boys have to show us? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm……..

  • Kayser Sozay

Looking VERY forward to the new Chickenfoot album. I’m still hoping they find a way for Chad to tour with them. As awesome as CF is live, it won’t be the same without him.

  • shawn

I am looking forward to this and to the new Sammy DVD that is suppose to be comming soon!

  • JHop5150

VH had better have one out before Chickenfoot has two!

  • Diamond Dean

Hope their rocking , didnt mind the first album but it was far from great , dare say this one will be pretty similer

  • Karl

This only has to be as good as the first one to be excellent. But it will probably be better.

  • patrick

i wonder what the odds are of getting eddie to hang out with joe for awhile?

  • Mark

OHHHHHHHHH I am so freakin Jazzed!!!

That new Satch C/D is really awesome it listens sort of like a blues jazz record. New Chickenfoot baby!!!!!

  • Let’s Rock

    To all the Hagar Haters,
He’s making some good old rock and roll again. You have to hate that.

    A note to Eddie,
That crazy ex-lead singer and his good friend on the bass are going to rock the world again with two other friends that just want to play some music. Damn it!!!

    To Alex,
Do yourself a favor and pick up the phone like you did in 2003. Make a call to Mike and Sammy, patch in Eddie.

So, what are we going to get in the future……besides silence.

    The Nation Waits

  • Dooley

    Waaaaay cool !!!

  • Fear of a Sparkless Horizon

To the faithless faithful. Just remember what Dave said at the dog show (odd sentence) “you will hear from us in 7 or 8 months”. Lying is definitley NOT that guys style. Hold tight folks! I can feel it coming! As for the Foot, best wishes. Aaahh. This being postive and optimistic feels pretty good today!

  • Dooley

    Fear of a Sparkless Horizon:

I believe Dave. But I’ll believe him more if/when
April 2011 arrives and something materialzes. The Chickenfoot news is for real. The Van Halen stuff
is something we are hoping for.

  • Jones

    The Foot rocks

Get Alex to play drums and rename the band ‘New Halen’, or ‘Halen 2.0′, or ‘At Least We’re Still Playing Stuff..’

As 2010 comes to a close, here’s a few wishes of mine for the coming year:
    1. Van Halen puts out new music, with emphasis on the “new”.
    2. Original Black Sabbath reunites for a new album and tour.
    3. Original Michael Schenker group does the same. (Schenker, Barden, Sheehan and Carmassi)
    4. Van Roth fans grow up

  • Let’s Rock

Van Halen fans are grown up(and growing old).

We are waiting for our favorite(and the world’s best)rock band to do the same!

    The Nation Waits

  • Let’s Rock

    But Jones:

That would be a great day, to have 3/4 of the band together, but we already have that today.

  • Tim

I’m a VH fan first, but CF’s first album was really solid. I will definitely consider buying the new one. They seem to have fun together, something VH doesn’t project anymore.

  • SCAR

    Fucking love it!!!!

  • http://heavymellowmusic.com johnny beane

I know what Joe means by not listening to demos.
You get what’s called “Demo love” and it’s harder to change it and u can get burned out on the tune and very sick of it.

I record demos and put them away for months or even years then come back to them with a fresh look.

Can make a huge difference and make it better.

  • patrick

@sparkless horizon, you are assuming that the guy who told us what dave said is telling the truth.he could have just heard what he wanted to hear, made that part up or for all we know he was bothering dave and he told him that just to get rid of him…we dont know but to just take that as fact after all these years is alittle silly.

  • Just some dude

I like what I’m hearing from the Chickenfoot camp… Joe was saying before how he wanted to refine the sound and take it to the next level… and now he’s saying how he handed the compositions off to Sammy so he could take his time with it. Add a little more polish to their sophmore album and I know this one is gonna really shine! The last one rocked, don’t get me wrong, but their were a couple tracks that lacked a little substance… and Sam got just a touch of cheese on a couple joints. Overall a superb album though.

HOPE THE NEXT ONE LIVES UP TO MY EXPECTATIONS!

  • Fear of a Sparkless Horizon

@Patrick, there is nothing wrong with being a little silly, but point well taken. I still say we get at least a song for X-Mas and an album to follow in early 11. My gut feeling, sans dog show encounter. (another odd sentence)

  • Vancionado

Very excited for the next album… Hate the wait though!!

And very surprised there hasn’t been a Sammy-basher, nor Chickenfoot-hater comment so far on this post!

    Knock on wood!!

  • patrick

listen,i feel what your saying but i just cant get worked up about anything anymore untill i actually hear some new music.this band is way to fragile to just assume anything but i hope they do release something and it rocks.

  • http://news@vhnd.com j wallace

satch is a f!!! di!!! whined about that whole coldplay thing nothing but a evh wannabe 95% of his licks are borrowed from evh granted chickenfoot is more active right now but classic vh both eras stands the test of time vh is working right now when they emerge from 5150 look out GONNA BLOW CAMELFOOT OUT OF THE WATER!!!!! would like to see mikey back awesome stage presence

  • jk5150

Hey, Wallace…Satch wined because his music was stolen!! Don’t hate cuz he did something about it. Keep dusting off the old hits, they are great but CF is fresh, new and gets your blood pumping!! It’s funny that a guy (Joe) that hasn’t been in a band has 14 new songs but the “real” guitar hero that has a band named after him is in the basement. I’m a VH lifer with Dave OR Sam. I can play Atomic Punk and I’m the one all day long on Guitar Hero but I need something new!!

  • RothHagarFan

God bless Chickenfoot at list we got them cuz we ain’t gonna get any Van Halen any time soon , Alex Van Halen if he ever wants to play drums again now is the time to give Sammy a call

  • Just Some Dude

Man-o-man, am I gonna miss Chad Smith on the 2011 Chickenfoot tours. That mo fo knows how to start the fucking party!… Glad he is at least gonna do the album… I hope they can find a touring drummer aggresive enough to handle the task.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING VHND MODERATORS & REGULARS!

  • Jones

J Wallace, rock and roll is ALL ABOUT borrowing/covering other people’s stuff. How do you think Van Halen got started??

  • Mark

Hey if Chad cannot tour with Chickenfoot, I think we all know a drummer who might be free to tour for awhile. Right Alex?……….
