David Lee Roth’s Sister Creates Rockin’ Lullabyes

From Forbes.com:

David Lee Roth, lead singer of Van Halen, used to be known as the only musical one in the Roth family. His sister, Lisa Roth, never really considered herself musically inclined. Ballet was as musical as shot got, until about three years ago.

She was shopping for a baby gift, and couldn’t find anything she thought would be the perfect gift for her friend.  She thought, “What if there was a gift that would benefit the parents and the child?”

Music came to mind first, since at the time she was working for CMH Records, a label that focused on blue grass and classic country music. She thought it would be a great gift.

“But most of the lullabyes out there, I wouldn’t think parents could relate to or enjoy hearing them over and over again. But their favorites songs, I figured they would.”

So, she approached her boss, David Haerle about creating lullabyes based on a parent’s favorite singers and bands. Rock-A-Bye Baby features recognizable music from nearly 30 artists, from Metallica to the Rolling Stones. Even country stars such as Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, and Garth Brooks are featured.

“It’s more for the parent than the child but it calms the child at the same time,” explains Roth.

But it’s not an easy process taking a rock song and turning it into a lullabye. First, they have to license the music. Then they have to go through the music, note by note, and take it down a few notches to make each song suitable for baby. The songs have to be slowed down, but they don’t lose the recognizable melody. The reverb is cut down significantly. There are no vocals. No loud steel guitars. And no drums. Instead, they use the glockenspiel, the mellotron, bells, and wood instruments. Sometimes you’ll hear a bird or even a frog.

“We really try to make each song magical. I like to say we add a little sparkling pixy dust to make each special,” says Roth.

The formula works. Rock-A-Bye Baby accounts for about 65% of CMH Label Group’s revenues.

Celebrities have talked about buying Rock-A-Bye Baby in People Magazine and US Weekly. The series was also featured on TV show, “Gilmore Girls.”

“When I knew I’d really hit something right was when I saw an interview of Kurt Hammett of Metallica talking about playing it for his child, and he said that it works.”

That music has been working wonders at night for my 1-year-old. He loves the versions for the Smashing Pumpkins. Hope she can convince her brother and his band-mates to allow a VH version to be made.

  • Mark

    Smart Idea.

  • Nat

I wonder if that’s how Dave got hooked up with the bluegrass VH tribute thing, if she was working with a bluegrass/country label?

My boy’s 3 so he’s a little past this stuff but I just might buy the VH one when they release it anyway.

  • Roth-A-Holic

Pretty cool to finally see someone in Dave’s family. Dave has always been EXTREMELY private about his family, but I knew he had a sister named Lisa in addition to his father Dr. Nathan and his mother Sybil. I’ve seen pictures of his surgeon father, but never a photo of his mother — anyone have a link?

Also, this video is just more proof that Dave is not a selfish jerk like so many people think he is. He helped his sister get a job at a record label, and I remember reading an article in Rolling Stone back in 1984 that he was letting her live in the Pasadena mansion that Dave bought from his father.

Dave made it as a big-time rock star, but he never forgot to take care of his family — a really classy guy!

  • iwannaberr

It’s official. She said it! There will be a new VH cd in 2011! YES!!!

  • Randy

iwannaberr, you’re right! Do you think Wolfie can play glockenspiel and mellotron on the tour?

  • http://gswoerner@hotmail.com Jim

    The Roth’s rule.

  • Opusthe1

    Kurt Hammett?

  • ringostore

Definitely another smart kin from the Roth family! And some people think Dave was not the business man of VH.

  • Tater Salad

    That is awesome!!!

  • Bill1521

Slow down Iwannaberr, she said SHE was going to do a rockababy Van Halen CD not Van Halen doing a new CD. At least that is how I heard her. Maybe a dual release.

  • ringostore

Actually I have never seen any pics of Dave’s family, it would be cool to see!

  • Bill1521

Dave’s mom have a backstage photo with Dave from the US Festival. Mom has big glasses and looks like the classic Jewish mom. Dave is in his stage suit so it was taken fairly close to show time and looks like the same trailer that Mark Goodman’s classic MTV interview was done. Nothing to me knowledge of Dr. Roth.

  • J5150C

    Eruption would be cool!

  • Ryan

Dave is my favorite member of Van Halen. He has more class than all of them in my opinion.

  • Van Fan

My thoughts exactly, Opusthe1. It’s Kirk Hammett, not Kurt. Come on, Forbes!

  • Phil

    LOL, that’s a cool idea.

  • patrick

iwannaberr,i think she ment lullabyes off of the old tunes…LOL…is that what qualifies as an official statement in van halen land?LMAO

  • Ryan

Haha that was great. And to defend iwannaberr I think he was just being sarcastic….Hopefully haha

  • Diamond Dean

You can actually see the family resemblence, sounds like a great person n wish her all the best .

Im positive Daves a great person , he has made our lives all a better place.

    Rock on Roths!

  • Mark Sachs

I wonder if Dave taught her how to do Flying Eagle kicks off of the drumkit.

  • fish

    > I wonder if that’s how Dave got hooked up with the

Yes. It’s the same label, CMH Records/CMH Label Group.

  • http://none Dirty Duck

I actually read about this before it hit here…..

    Excellent idea.

Could even be the launch pad for future musicians….
One min humming iron man…..the next….

  • KP_James

The idea is not new. There’s already been an “Elvis for Babies” out for a while now.

  • Chester

Maybe she should go back to that psychic and find out if he foresees a new Van Halen album being release in her future… he got the job part right.

  • Roth-A-Holic

I gotta admit……that lullabye version of Aerosmith’s “Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” was getting me misty-eyed and wishing to doze off into la-la land……but I’m not sure how the lullabye version of “Aint Talkin’ Bout Love” is gonna work? Might get the little one worked up into a milk-feeding frenzy.

  • Fear of a Sparkless Horizon

KP – Your absolutely right. I got a heavy metal lullabye cd for my kid back in ’03. Had the typical bad baby w/ tatts and devil horns cheesy cover. I actually found her similar speech mannerisms to her bros to be most interesting part of the bit. Definitely an inherent cool in the family.

    Roth-A-Holic:

    Hey brother….

I dont think that they have a VH version in the works.
But if they did, I would just release the hagar era…
If it puts many of us here to sleep imagine what it could
    do for newborns? ;)

  • Ted

I really hope the new album is coming soon.

  • lucky

I love me some “Kurt” Hammett. Brilliant idea that I wish I came up with. back to the studio.

  • Chris

My daughter (Halyn) loves the Metallica & AC/DC versions

  • BubbaCo

At 00:56, you can see her flash the quintessential David Lee Roth million-dollar shit-eatin’ grin.

  • Randy

It’s unfortunate that sarcasm doesn’t always translate well in print. I just realized from other reactions that my last comment could possibly have read as a jab at iwannaberr. For the record, iwannaberr, I was playing along with you. I thought your post was very clever and it cracked me up. On the other hand, if you were serious, then this is a huge jab : )

  • rOBct

Please tell me this isn’t the new VH we’re waiting for in 2011?

  • Tater Salad

Roth a holic: lol that made me laugh and I even like some Van Hagar! Nice one! :)

  • Johnh

And the cradle will rock… anyone…

  • Rocknroll

    Little Dreamer would be cool

  • F’n Rockstar

My baby has been crashing to the Green Day and Smashing Pumpkins “RockABye” CDs for 2 years now. They are actually pretty damn cool. My friend has been using the Metallica one with his toddler. They are pretty damn cool.. had no idea about the Roth connection

  • george sanders

she’s cute i think. and dave has another sister too her name is Alison if i remember. And last i heard Eddie i think said in guitar magazine that the band was in the studio with Dave and they were recording with wolfie. so its just a waiting game now.cant wait much longer though. ive been waiting since 1984 for a real Van Halen album. lol not that sammy’s were bad but it wasnt Van Halen too me.

Dave’s Dad was Jewish but his mom wasn’t.

Roth a holic: Dave has another sister (younger) Alison – she did alot of his costume design for his Mambo slammers vegas stint and the Ice Cream Band back in the 90′s.. I can see the resemblance with Lisa and Dave – I think she is about 2-3 years younger than him. I can only assume that with dave being so private about his family, is that a fair ways back his dad was abducted by some nutbag who wanted to kidnap him and hold him for ransom – luckily he managed to get away….The guy apparently died in a shoot out with LAPD about 6 blocks from Dave’s house not long after…… I believe his dad passed away a while back, there’s nothing in print to say when, alas. To see a photo of Dave’s Mom (Us festival 1983) I recall seeing it on the Corbis website – there was one with all 3 of the Roth girls – for some reason it dissapeared. Does anyone have a link for Dr Nathan Roth’s pic? Never been able to find one anywhere!! Anyhoo, its nice to see the strong music connection being maintained by Lisa – I’ve heard a couple of the Aerosmith Lullaby’s and Metallica’s – fantastic idea and concept!! Sharp lady she is !!! From what I understand (and have read) all the Roth gals are fabulous vibrant women….more power to em’ :)

  • iwannaberr

Randy, I thought your post was hilarious. Although I really think they should bring back Michael Anthony for the glockenspiel and mellotron, otherwise it’s not really VH!

  • Eddie

if you pause this video at 56. sec. you can see the dlr classic smile in his sister. DLR RULES !

  • Atomic Pete

    Roth on!!

  • Wychwood

Several years back there was a video I saw online, from the TV show Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous who did a feature on Dave’s dad back in the 80′s (me thinks)

  • evhua

from second 47 to second 52… new VH RECORD…

    SHE SAID THAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mark Sachs

Now is she the same sister who worked with Dave on the radio show after he followed Howard Stern

  • patrick

evhua, she ment a new lullabye album with the old van halen songs…dont keep getting fished in like that…LOL

  • Christopher

I want to hear Roth’s vocals over one of these baby songs.
